  • A sad, dirty RM1X Sequence Remixer on my bench in search for some TLC this time. LCD contrast control needed fixing, tactile switches needed to be replaced and it needed a good clean.
The Bad Gear review of the RM1x I mentioned: • Bad Gear - Yamaha RM1x
Here you can buy the soft dome and 9mm 2-pin tactile switches: www.vintagesyn...
Background music: fooling around with Yamaha RM1x Patterns "Artcore1" and "Pop"
    Tools used:
    - Steinberg UR22mkII + Audio technica 2020 for voiceover
    - Olympus E-M10 as video camera
    - Manfrotto Magic Arm
    - Editing: iMovie (Easy bits) + Davinci Resolve (difficult bits)

Nice to meet another guy that had to patch a RM1x PCB! 😂 I received the device for free 10 years ago from my room mate as most of the PCB was split in two, but about 30-40 repaired traces later I had a functioning device again!
I have the replacement switches and a replacement chip since then, but never installed them yet...I guess it is time now

Well done! Brings back old memories. I went through this journey too when i got mine. I hope it will last and I never have to redo it again ;)

If you soak the yellowing buttons in hydrogen peroxide you can make them pure white again - used 12%

Its a fantastic machine - especially when your pattern creations are midi linked to other instruments in the studio.

Thank you for this video the parts link and Deoxite tips! I have to fix mine now, unfortunately I can't get straight into the test suite as the "pattern" button is not working, so i've ordered the switch kit parts and have my fingers crossed. I could turn it on though and it was great to hear my some tunes i made over a decade ago! even though they were pretty ropey tunes lol

wow man, you are a f***ing master! any tips how one should start his soldering/electronics repair journey to, one day perhaps, reach your level?

Fun to watch. I would have guessed the display needed replacing. I wonder what took out the cap? Interesting.

I think age and stress… switch mode inverter stressing the cap with high frequency switching? but not much load actually… moght also just be bad batch of caps… (have seen that elsewhere-> Roland R70)

wow! thats a pretty good service job! how much did that cost the customer? i reckon by now pretty much all original Rm1xes out there will need this. did you find the new soft switches had a better playing response? ive always wondered that. also thank you for going through alot of the internal circuit board architecture. i found it interesting lol.

this is a hobby of mine, I am not a repair shop of sorts... I buy broken synths, repair them (now also make a video about it...) and sell them on if successful, the working bits are spare parts on eBa if I am not successful. The new soft tactile switches were the same as the ones I replaced, so no difference in playing...

Just pulled my RM1x from the storage closet and it needs this service treatment and a cleaning. Looks labor intensive! What product did you use for cleaning the encoders?

    • @reinardsynth6581
      @reinardsynth6581  Před rokem +1

for the encoders I used Dioxit D5 which is for metal contacts. Please do not use Deoxit D5 on carbon/plastik based contacts (like potentiometers, sliders etc.): use their F5 product for that.

Amazing. Have that machine and also need to replace the buttons. @reinardsynth do you also do repairs without flipping the machines yourself?

Why you didn't remove the yellow tint from the buttons?

  • @joseluissanjuanvalero4244

    Hello.
In my first place, work very very well done.
I have a problem with my Yamaha rm1x.
If so, can you help, PLEASE?
It is a machine that is always used very little and at home, no smoke, no blows. Always very good deal.
Now I put the switch ON and only the screen lights up and no button or sound works, or anything at all.
I have taken it to Technical Service and they tell me that it is a major fault and the broken part is not new.
Do you know of these machines, where there are new or used parts, or if anyone knows if any specific part failed in these machines that are so many years old?
    THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Spare parts for obsolete synths can be found on eBay, www.syntaur.com and other places (see my “top 8 synth faults”- episode for links. On your rm1x: Inwould ask a local electronics wizard to have a look at the power supply circuitry: as in this video, these small caps can go kapput and make the rm1x inoperable.

Please tell me you are available for fixing other people's machines. Like mine for example! What's your fees and how do I get it to you?

    • @reinardsynth6581

If you live near Vienna/Austria perhaps; otherwise no: it’s a hobby…

    • @paulb4615
      @paulb4615 Před 27 dny +1

I thought it would be a logistical problem! Unfortunately I'm nowhere near. No trips to the UK planned? I could set you a stall up in the garage and put you up for the duration of the fix and be your tour guide for some time out (really selling this aren't I!)

@@paulb4615doing a good job! I did live in London for 4 years… do you have a time machine? (If I had one… would travel to 1988ish and buy a load of Jupiter 8’s for cheap)

I've got the pleasure of a Korg M1 from a smiliar era, mainly for the piano. Love old skool piano. And only a couple of tactile switches down! I always wanted to dabble with a Roland SH101 and a Quasimidi Sirius personally.
