  • This video highlights the remarkable achievements and collaborative actions undertaken in five years to enhance water security and restore balance in the Ziway-Shalla sub-basin. It’s a journey of determination, resilience, collaboration, governance, changed lives and hope.
Learn more on the integrated landscape approach to water resources management as implemented by a consortium of Wetlands International (lead), Ethiopian Rift Valley Lakes Basin Administration Office (RVLBAO), Meki Batu Farmers’ Union, Joytech, Acacia Water, and World Waternet with support of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In Ethiopia’s Central Rift Valley lies the Ziway-Shalla sub-basin. Spanning 15,000km2 and supporting over 7 million people, this sub-basin was diminishing due to uncontrolled human activities. In 2019, the consortium embarked on a pilot initiative that embraced an integrated landscape approach to water resources management. The aim? To improve water usage, reduce recession of wetlands and enhance overall ecosystem health and human well-being and resilience.
