- Merlin conjures up a magic spell to allow Uther to satisfy his lust with Igrayne by making him look like her husband. She later gives birth to the future King Arthur. From John Boorman's Excalibur (1981.) www.markarcana.com

Love the disgust in Merlin's voice when he tells Uther that "his lust will hold him up." This Merlin was above such petty mortal concerns.
Nicol is the best Merlin ever on screen. Amazing, magical performance
Agree
Trance State If you can find it. Nicol narrated/read Mary Stewart's Merlin Cycle.
Always think that
He was great as Merlin.
Instablaster...
Nicol Williamson was an criminally underrated actor.
Nicol Williamson should have gotten an Oscar for playing Merlin, or at least a nomination.
Agreed, brilliant performance.
Best performance ever in my mind. Possible WAS Merlin. ...
Nicol Williamson's delivery is spine tingling. "I have awoken him. Can't you see, all around you, the dragon's breath?"
+jw870206 He was perfectly cast.
Everything Charles Dance is being fan cast in now, I would have also given to Nicol Williamson.
Just the different inflections he uses to chant the spell. From bombastic at the beginning, to almost a whisper coaxing a child to sleep at the end.
The dragons breath.
ayf1983 That's a very interesting thought.
@@panismith1544 "I have awoken him." "Him" being a single dragon, and the breath belonging to the dragon, "dragon's breath."
The best Arthur and Excalibur legend based movies ever, nothing has beaten it. It captures the brutal and terrifying mythical dark ages perfectly. The background track for Merlins spell reminds me of of György Ligeti or Space Odyssey.
By far the greatest of the Arthurian movies.
Uther: "But the cliff....the sea!"
Merlin: "Your lust will hold you up!"
When I was in the Navy, and living in the barracks, I had this movie and I played it every weekend on the livingroom TV. The Marines came by to watch. They LOVED this movie.
Best Fantasy Movie to date!
I can see that. The honor and love the knights showed. And helen miren. This is a great film for men.
@@TheVFXbyArt I think they were all waiting for the scene that came after this one...
I was a marine and I love this movie too
Boobs. Best bait ever to catch Marines.
Helluva film this - Boorman certainly knows his mythology. Beautifully photographed from start to finish - a film that cannot fail to arouse unconscious archetypes in the deepest sleeper. I just wish there were more films as good as this. Ah, well...
1:00 ...
2:18
Nicol Williamson as Merlin - a masterstroke of casting. An extremely tough act to follow !
This scene is so amazing. It still interesting in the next few seconds, where Uther rides on the mist and has his helmet, armor and semblance transformed.
Great band
Best band
He took on the role of Merlin in such a convincing manner.
Incredible movie. So authentic to the mythology and unapologetic about it. So many movies based off myth now are apologizing for being myth stories.
That's just the state of fiction, especially fantasy these days. You cant just have a fantasy story any more, you have to constantly have it shoved in your face that what you are watching is self aware of the fact it's fantasy.
"I have awoken him."
Heard this in “Ready Player One” and knew exactly where it came from. Love the lil geeky stuff they put in that movie.
I love how Uther is still worrying about jumping head on into the sea
Hi Zeppelin, it's in old Irish. John Boorman, the director, lives in Wicklow in Ireland. Excalibur was filmed on location throughout Ireland, but especially in Wicklow :)
Anál nathrach,
orth’ bháis’s bethad,
do chél dénmha
"Serpent's breath, charm of death and life, thy omen of making."
Merlin: "I will transform you into the semblance of the Duke, Igrayne will think her husband has returned!
Uther: But the Cliff! The Sea!
Merlin: YOUR LUST WILL HOLD YOU UP, YOU WILL FLOAT ON THE DRAGON'S BREATH! RIDE!
Awesome!
"RIDE!"
"Now, take on the outer shape of the Duke. CHANGE! TRANSFORM!"
Change, Transform.
That’s it !
@@fendergibs Guards: The duke! The duke has returned!
Uther: Keep my horse ready! I ride out before sunrise!
So THAT's where the Undertaker got a few of his lines from. THIS movie! :D
Yep
That scene, that dialogue, and that musical riff at the end!
"Your lust will hold you up"
That's what he said XD
Standing stones, great detail in this scene. If I had to choose the best actor in The Merlins role it would be this man, Nicol Willamson. He has been in some astounding productions.
Gail Karlsson Aye that be it... the charm.
In Old Irish
Anál nathrach, orth’ bháis’s bethad, do chél dénmha
In Modern Irish:
Anáil nathrach, ortha bháis is beatha, do chéal déanaimh
In English:
Serpent's breath, charm of death and life, thy omen of making.
anál nathrach = breath of serpent
orth’ bháis ’s bethad = spell of death and of life
do chél dénmha = thy omen of making
www.evertype.com/misc/charm.html
Gail Karlsson Happens frequency.. err frequently.
To my mind, this is merlin portrayed correctly.
He is.
Taking the cadences of Shakespearean drama and applying them to the dialogue of ancient myth. Nobody beats Nicol Williamson as Merlin. Nobody.
"By the serpent's breath, charm of death and life, the omen of making.."
This spell that Merlin chanted is a Key-Spell to the Spirit-Realm
I love Gabriel Byrne's version of Uther. He plays him as a bit of a dirtbag.
He’s total dirtbag lol 😂
"Anal nathrach, orth' bhais's bethad, do che'l de'nmha."
"Serpent's breath, charm of death and life, thy omen of making."
What language is it?

The best Merlin ever
Anaal Nathrakh led me here.
The Power of the Mantric Repetition... and idea creates a form.. the form transform the real world... the grand secret of the Alchemists!
I totally noticed this. It’s the magic spell from “Ready Player One”. Great awesome movie. Just finished watching it. It was almost geek overload. It was geek bliss!!!!!
Alejandro Martinez How can Merlin's spell here be from Ready Player One?
@@dynomax101 I think he means they just quoted this in Ready Player One, don't think he means RPO originated it.
@@fmjs5146 He knows, but a point needs be made..
This is the best Merlin.
Nicol best Merlin ever... No, he IS Merlin! He gives the role so much and make him so 'human'...
But also aside Sean in 'Robin and Marian' he was fantastic!
Nicol Williamson is brilliant in this film. He makes a great film fantastic.
Bob Taylor absolutely agree 👍
Great movie on so many levels. I still remember the charm of making. A masterpiece.
My lust has held me up more then I care to remember.......
I love this movie- probably first real rated R movie I ever saw (sneaked it in when it first played on HBO in the 80's). Showed it to friends and they think it is awful. They just don't get it. Hard to put your finger on why it is so good- such a strange movie. Damn, you can just feel that over the top armor and the massive swords. Agreed with other folks, best Merlin ever. BTW, if you have seen this movie a million times, watching under the influence of your favorite libation, makes it feel new again. Or at least appreciate it's unique strangeness once again. Cheers.
I also saw this as a kid. It stayed with me.
I was 9 years old when I saw this in the theatre; I snuck in
You need get some new friends Motto. They clearly have no awareness of pure brilliance!
Nicol Williamson one of the best ever.
Nicol Williiamson not just spoke those words, he incantated them and gave them power.
I know now that Merlin's charm of making probably derived from an old Irish Language and has a real meaning. But back in the 80s when i first saw the movie, i didn't knew anything about that, but still those words stuck with me to this day.
It’s actually Latin! And the amazing thing is that he saying “all is possible with the help of the universe” it’s actually really profound
Shame there is no Merlin today...it would be awesome to have one come along and sort things out.
Yes, like in Sword In The Stone.
This scene gives me chills , for some reason
Gandalf vs dumbledore? Ha merlin takes both out
I watch this clip before making my way to an adult entertainment club!
Very good. Did you get any life-changing experiences, or was that between you and the dancer involved? Haha 😍😍😍👍👊
Undertaker: "Accept the Lord of Darkness as your savior. Allow the Purity of Evil to guide you."
AYE!
YEP
@ohauss Great insight on the characters in the movie. They do not make them like this anymore.
the charm of creation !
yup before Merlin (Kevin) was a fall down drunk, and two yes Undertaker (From the WWF chanted that) good movie..... btw I liked the Undertaker's voice while 'he' was chanting it.
Celestia Angel listen to taker's ministry song. He sounds demonic when he chants it
Same
best merlin ever
Timeless.
The Charm of Making is akin to Dungeons & Dragons Limited Wish, Wish and Alter Reality spells. You can make it do almost anything but comes at a cost.
And this is how Undertaker got his 1999 theme
Yep #AttitudeGANG
Classic movie, thanx for sharing.
Eh know that Igrayne is Director Boormans daughter so that’s an odd Pervy bit
Anál nathrach, orth’ bháis’s bethad, do chél dénmha
... That was some very powerful shit...
They caught the emotion. This movie really captured the savage kings in all their primal glory. You don't get movies like this anymore.
One of my favorite movies when I was a kid Had to get this again on digital
The Charm of Making is in sean ghaeilge (Old Irish). John Boorman filmed Excalibur in Ireland, mostly in Wicklow :)
Couldn't tell ya how many times I've watched this. Even saw it on the big screen when it came out. Ahead of it's time 4 sure!!
perhaps the best scene ever telling your friend to go smash that puh puh 😂😂😂

Merlin was the first wingman
Actually they are planning a rape. But hey, don't let that detail get you...
The documentary 'Excalibur : Behind the Movie' is being shown on UK TV Friday December 1st 2017, 21:00 on PBS America, Virgin channel 276.
Was it good? Because I loved the movie.
So, who's here after Ready Player One?
That was driving me CRAZY! I knew I heard it somewhere, but I just couldn't place it!
I recognized it immediately. I love Boorman's Excalibur.
haha, yeah, it was driving me crazy trying to remember where I'd heard that. Haven't seen this movie in over 20 years...
I recognized it immediately and I was the only one in the theater who audibly reacted to it! XD
As soon as I heard the first words I started whispering the rest of the spell in sync with the movie. I went in a trans like the goddamn Manchurian candidate. I couldn't keep up with the story 'cause I was too busy trying to figure out what the hell had just happened.
fuck yeah!!! Merlins chant was also used by Undertaker during the ministry days
"Your lust will hold you up" .... sheeyit.
if you have faith, you will float on the dragon's breath
I really like this movie
Great movie
Over 350 comments, and I've only seen 2 about the band. Good Stuff.
Merlin is slipping Igrayne a magic roofie.
Planning a rape, you mean?
Any wrestling fans in here think those words chanted by Merlin are familiar? They are what the Undertaker used to chant during his Ministry of Darkness days!!!
READY PLAYER ONE bitches!! It was worth missing out on the TOMB OF HORRORS!! =)
I'm just here before all the Ready Player One...oops too late lol.
@healer378 Because you can't make omelettes without breaking eggs. He wants to see the land united so that the wars end. Regardless of Uther's failings, he has chosen him to unite it and even though he squandered it once, Merlin still has hope.
The Charm of Making seems to have an excellent application for divining and centering...not sure if its due to tantric repetition or its seemingly non-intutive relation to english dialect. The way it's presented here, it could almost be a song? Next time you are at sea under a full moon..try it as the merlin does here
GUYS THE UNDERTAKER USED THIS SPEECH!!
Anál nathrach, orth' bháis ’s bethad, do chél déanmha. (older Irish)
Anáil nathrach, ortha bháis agus beatha, do chiall déanaimh. (modern Irish)
The Charm of Making, an incantation repeatedly uttered by both Merlin and Morgana, is in an Old Gaelic dialect that translates to "Serpent's breath, charm of death and life, thy omen of making."[1]
Anáil = breath
nathrach = of snake
ortha = spell
bháis = of death
agus = and
beatha = of life
do = your
ciall = sense, sanity, meaning, interpretation, reason, believe
originally cél = omen, augury, portent
déanaimh = of making
This also appears as the mystery spell in the new movie Ready Player One.
Interesting information. I'm considering learning Irish sometime.
Galt Barber: Thanks for the info! 👌🙃
Now we know where the band Anaal Nathrakh got their name.
"your lust will hold you up"
***** "RIDE! TRANSFORM!"
Haha i never thought about it until now
Very apropos
I wish my lust would hold me up. I'd be a much better rock climber.
halleck3 Yeah, well, it can't do that just because it helps you get your rocks off.
Yes... Is the Power of the Word... a grand power known and seek by hundred of men all history.
Sounds like something undertaker said
So many people slate this film but I love it. Nicol IS Merlin, Admit it , if you are on top of a hill, pref with a good storm, who would not call out the charm of making 🙂
Wow i thought that spell sounded familiar until i realized that phrase was used in the movie ready player one. Dang great reference
idk what it is but I love ancient irish
I imagined a depiction of The Once and Future King with a Led Zeppelin soundtrack and visuals by Frank Frazetta. That, or Lord of the Rings. One day...
Úžasnej film
I HAVE AWOKEN HIM. CAN'T YOU SEE ALL AROUND YOU...THE DRAGON'S BREATH...
But the cliff... the sea? YOUR LUST WILL HOLD YOU UP!
I had this memorized by the time the movie ended I will notice till the day I die
Came here because Ready Player One.
What a fantastic movie
Old gaelic: "Anail naprah, urdbas bephod, dochiel dienbeh".
Is it old Gaelic? I have been quoting the 'Charm of Making' for years, and didn't know that. This is my favorite Merlin..
Yes. It is.

also known as the Spell of the Orb of Osuvox (Ready Player One)
Is this the same spell from Ready Player One?
No, the spell from Ready Player One is a direct homage to THIS Merlin, just like Undertaker paid tribute to it as well.
@@cryptozoomauler5505 But Ready Player One was made before this/'[];'-p;]']'
