Yeah, cows are the biggest danger you'll face on walks. But you did all right, keep fairly calm, didn't run (brisk walk is good) and a quick loud yell from time to time when they get closer than you're comfy with. The main danger is how you react to them. Panic and run and that's really when things go bad. They were just curious, it's just the type of curiosity you might have with spiders. Maybe you'll shoo them out, maybe smash em flat when they run and scare you. Only you're the spider to them, avoid having em smash you.

Well we certainly have raised the ire of the CZcams know-it-alls with this video.
We've been accused of being 'city dwellers' and 'townies' in a pejorative way as if that is a crime. These are the facts.
    1) According to the Farmers Weekly website, cows have killed an average of 4 people per year since 2000. We don't want to be included in those statistics.
    2) We were walking on a designated public footpath as is our entitled right.
    3) The cows were not visible until we were halfway across the field.
    4) Neither of us have lived in a city for 30 years, but we do love walking in the country.
    5) The official advice regarding dogs when being threatened by cows is to let them off their lead. Hopefully this would mean they wouldn't be shot as has been suggested.
    6) I (Fran) am scared of 50 cows running at me showing the whites of their eyes, I can't help that. I am not however scared of spiders!!
Thanks for watching and please keep it respectful.

I realise this is getting to be a sore spot now. But as a professional dog trainer and former sheepdog trainer that has some experience with cows as well. My opinion is that if you let your dogs off lead when you are being attacked it helps. In the immediate situation. Dogs being faster than you. In this situation they are much better at saving themselves than you would be. They would get shot here in the US if they were chasing livestock. Running wieght off the animal. Weight = money. But not sure how that would go over in the UK. And since I don't know your dogs. I'm not sure what they would do. My professional guess... They would run. They would perceive your fear and act in kind. But who knows.
Example would be my doberman would run from the cows. My border collie would take thier nose (bite it hard). Then gather them to me. Who gets shot in that scenario?
Sorry wasn't trying to pile on. Didn't realise so many people commented like I did. I don't think people expect you to know. Its more like helpful future advice from people that do. Don't know what you did for a living but watch me use power tools. You will get a couple of laughs. And hopefully I will keep my fingers!

John Sharman is right I do believe. I grew up on a farm and had many cows run towards me. They run towards humans because they think there may be some food spread on the ground. That excites them--that is why they kick and run. There can be a few rogues who are aggressive. It is always good to be cautious when you are around cows who are not familiar with you. We love your series. Send a few more on that fabulous new boat!!!

Hi Fran and Rich. Tiller handle Dave here. Wow, that Load of "Bullocks" looked a bit scary. Those Bullocks/Cows were young Heffers( Young female cows).Probable age about 6 months. So just like kids they wanted some fun. Then you came along and made their day. And they would not have harmed you. But you wouldn't be expected to know that eh.
Sorry to say your reactions to them, made the situation worse. They meant you no harm. It was your dogs that they were intrigued about. The obvious reaction would be to shout. It is illegal for a Farmer to put a dangerous beast,(Farmer speak). In a field that a footpath goes through. I'm from a livestock farming background of over forty years. So trust me on that one. Anyway. A very entertaining vlog. Keep me updated on that Tiller handle.
    Love Dave and Diane x

Hi Dave. A few months ago in Yorkshire an elderly gentleman walking across a field in Yorkshire with his brother was surrounded by cows who then knocked him to the ground and tramp!ed him to death. This happens to an average of walkers each year in the UK alone. I will never assume the cows just want a riendly pat on the nose. We have also been told by other people who think they know about cattle that we should shout at them or wave sticks at them. Everyone seems to know best.

Also unless those are the most unusual ranchers in the world. Those are not the first dogs those cows have ever seen.
What really trips me out is that you can walk right through someone's pasture! I understand you don't have as much room as we do. So you need to be able to get around, but wow. I had the same experience on the Barham Downs while walking end-to-end on the North Downs Way. I was walking across a field - knowing that you walk confidently and purposefully ignoring the herd of young bullocks. I had heard of deaths from stampeding, they get reported from time to time, so I was a bit wary. Anyway, the same thing happened - a lot of lowering of heads, running toward me, and it is scary at the time. They were not to be put off and I ended up the like the Pied Pier but with bullocks - either playful or aggressive in tow. Eventually, I made the mistake of running for it (with a backpack) and threw myself over a barbed-wire fence in a hedge at the edge of the field ripping my trousers and my thumb on the barbed wire. The bullocks chased me to the fence. Having reached safety I felt indignant but also saw the comical side of it but the first feeling was one of indignation - the comical side took awhile.

yeah, those were young animals, They were not snorting, pawing at the ground, big horned cows coming at you with their head lowered. As someone who has owned a few that was an over reaction on your part, They were looking for a pet and maybe some food. Cows are curious creatures.... like dogs... and investigate anything that looks unusual. My first cow was a bit of a pet..... we got her from a dairy and was half holstine and half angus. It got really cold the first night we had her, frost, we spread newspaper in the bathroom for the day old calf and she just laid down in there the whole night. From then on she wanted to come inside and would climb the steps of the mobile home if you left the door open.
Another funny bit is that we never had to have a bull. The next door neighbor had a 2000lb brahma and that big boy would jump that 6 foot fence like a deer. Let him have his way with the ladies because that big boy would hurt you. After he was done he would hop back over the fence to his own pasture. I miss twinkles... my kids would ride on her back, and she would follow any human like a dog. Spent many afternoons taking a nap resting my head on her....she would lay down on command, chew the cud and sleep too. I'm just a crazy Florida red neck, I like cows.

@@FloatingOurBoat Hey Fran. Farmers can be a little short with people if they have experienced ignorant behavior leading to management problems. I say 'ignorant' advisedly. Until one has lived the farming life it is impossible to understand the everyday ongoing pressures of farming. It is relentless. Animals don't take the weekend off so life on a farm is an endlessness. Because of that, frustration does creep in if problems are created by others which add to the workload.
I do recommend that you take the trouble to visit a working farm when you can. You'll find you really enjoy it and the knowledge you gain will make your country rambles totally relaxed. Next time the girls do the thunder of hooves, they love doing the under of hooves, you two will be able to join in and have some fun. The worst that will happen is that you'll be licked to death.
      Cheers Fran.

Funny story, years ago the wife and a friend were out walking. There path took them along a fenced pasture. It didn’t take long before they noticed there were being followed. It seems that the herd of cattle in the pasture had gotten used to the farmer coming by and feeding around that time.
What was funny was when they stopped, the cows stopped. Just staring at them. When they started back up, so did the cows. My wife said it was both funny and creepy.

Oh my! Dear Fran and Rich; please believe me when I tell you that the cattle (Cows) were playing! I just watched your vlog and I'm so sorry you got so scared! I'm a farm girl so familiar with Cattle behaviour, but how were you supposed to know that the cattle were playing, they are extremely curious by nature. Please bear this in mind. I must admit from 12,000miles away it looked hilarious, but have to admit to being in the situation with cow newly separated from its calf. Pretty scary when it's just you and hundreds of kilo of foaming, eye rolling, cattle.

Thank you Kristin. You may well be right, but people do get trampled by cows and we had the dogs with us which I know scares the cows, so I think we were justified in being scared. An elderly gentleman was killed in Yorkshire just s few months ago as he walked his dog across a field.

@@FloatingOurBoat I didn't mean to be Ms. KnowItAll .. Rest assured, you were justified being scared. I noticed these are young female cattle, future dairy cows. I forgot to mention that on the other hand, Bulls (male) can be extremely dangerous. I didn't know about the gentleman in Yorkshire, that is just horrible! You are right in being cautious, ofcourse.
Are the cattle fields in the U.K. fenced in? Are there warning signs? Sorry, but I haven't been to you country so just curious - if it wasn't for this blasted pandemic I would be in the process of buying a lovely narrowboat and cruising your lovely waterways :) Best wishes to you both!

    1. Interesting thing: Cows do at times go after dogs - not so much after humans.
    2. I once beat an actual pneumonia with elderberry syrup. No particualr recipe, just get the juice out, add some sugar (to make it palatable AND for preservation) heat it up to sterilize it and fill it in clean bottles. Use it: Pour 1/8 cup of syrup and top up with hot water. Drink as hot as you sensibly can.
    3. I love your pace - and that you still always get something interesting for a video without chasing after it!
And by the way, of all the narrowboat channels I know, yours is definitely in my top two! Love it! keep up the really nice content! :)
