  • Two well trained bengals out for a long walk. Cheeto and Kona are both large male bengal cats weighing just over 14 lbs. Updated, Kona is now 17 pounds, he likes to be thrown over your shoulder and carried like a heavy sack.

    It's amazing to see them walking side by side. People we come across are very surprised to see cats on a leash let alone cats walking so well together. Handling them is a bit different than walking a dog. It just takes a light tug of the leash to keep them on course as they do get distracted by birds and the sound of lizards rustling in the bushes as we walk or run through the neighborhood.

    My Ragdoll was trained at 11 weeks. Slowly having his harness on at home, than outside before finally walking along the foothpath. He loves his walks and will often run up a tree trunk. Patience is required and the cat walks you at times.
    Your two cats are beautifully cared for, their coats are silky and shiny.
    People do stop to say to me they have never seen a cat on a leash.

    Cats need catparks far more than dogs. Cats are more independent and likely to run off or get killed. So every cat is to be an indoor only animal unless he goes on a leash and/or gets taken to a small outdoor fenced in area from which he can't escape. No more dogparks because dogs don't need them. Catparks only.

    @lestermiller2717 Před 6 lety

    Mine loves to go out side for a walk everyday. But I can’t figure out how to get him to follow me. He just wants to run around trees or dive into the hedge bushes. Every deep puddle he can find he goes into them to play. Another thing that makes him unique is he will stand up on his hind legs looking into my neighbors window to give a meow shout out to their dog taco bell. It is so funny watching the two of them talk to each other.

    • @agavejon
      @agavejon  Před 5 lety

      Yeah it's hard to get them to follow on command. One of mine will (mostly) and one won't. I take Kona the black one out for walks now without a leash but not Cheeto. They have completely different temperaments.

    I have a 16yr old female bengal, she's always been very petite...5lbs. Her sister was 18lbs We moved down to a 1st floor apt this summer and she decided that she wanted to go outside now.. I had already put just a cute little collar on her before moving to see if she would try to slip it and she left it alone, the week we moved in, I put a leash on her we went out in the evening when no one was around and started walking thru the hall... plus that was as far as she would go.. just up and down for about a week and a half... then after that she started sitting at the door to go out each night, then it was taking walks for 15-30 min, then she wanted to patrol the entire complex. LOL Now she likes to go out when the weather is 60 or above, sun is shining and she can atleast be out for an hour or so.
    Trust me when I say, I don;t walk her most of the time, she walks me or right beside me, pretty much shows me where she wants to go.. But she doesn't cry like I thought she would, or try and run like she does in the house. The other dogs and cats that are out in my neighborhood dont seem to bother her unless they bark or make some loud noise.

    my problem is, i have 2 littermates, and they don't walk to the same direction, and whichever direction I pull the other one he freaks out. couldn't find a way to make them walk to the same direction, rather than that they are already ok with harness leash and being out.
    so how?

    • @agavejon
      @agavejon  Před 7 lety +5

      Your are correct this is not an easy task to walk two cats and at the same time, when the two are going at different speeds sometimes i have to pick up the slower one. Overtime they do seem to recognize the sidewalk as a path and follow it. Also i think they actually seem to enjoy walking side by side, they give each other confidence. Have a backup person ready to bail you out when things get crazy and they will.

    ive recently bought a bengal cat (Simba) and took him out for his first walk yesterday. It was a good first walk but we diddnt really move much(he loves his harness and leash so they arent bothering him) but he walked and then he stopped and wanted to sniff something or he wanted to go one way, i pulled the leash a little but that diddnt stop him from not sniffing something or not lying down or trying to go under a bush, how did u train ur cats to not go in another direction but follow a simple path and go the path u want them to go??
    It would help me and simba to have a nicer expirience when we go out on walks 🥰😁
    ps. He is 6 months old and has all of his vaccines so we waited until it is perfectly safe for him to walk, we also go at a time where its not so busy

      @DA-gw8in Před 9 lety

      Keep the harness on them for a bit then extend the time every week/day then put the lease on and just leave it on so he/she gets used to it NEVER put leashes/harnesses on after your cat does something bad, they will think it's a punishment

    • @agavejon
      @agavejon  Před 9 lety

      Will Maybe That's a good start, some people have trouble even with the harness. Get a leash, we like the 16 ft retractable type. Connect the leash and let the cat lead the way. Baby steps, don't tug at the beginning. How old are the cats?

      Bairong Shao I'm glad you like the videos. If you get a kitten, start him or her on a harness and leash early. Give them car rides, etc. Anything you want them to get used to is easier when there young.

    I have tried so hard to teach my baby how to walk on leash. She wants to go outside SO BAD but I want her to be safe. Anyway, she just won't catch on that she's supposed to follow me. I've tried treats and praise, but she doesn't seem to care. She just tries to go in the opposite direction of me, and when I don't move with her, she lays down on the ground and meows at me. Any tips?

    • @agavejon
      @agavejon  Před 8 lety +1

      +Elizabeth Hudson It's more important at the beginning to let them gain confidence and enjoy the experience, so within reason let them lead the way and go where they want to go. Overtime you will begin to notice that they will start allowing you to change the direction you want them to go.

    How did you train them?

    • @agavejon
      @agavejon  Před 10 lety

      You can look online, many postings for step by step process. It’s much easier to start them when they are kittens. It takes many weeks working a few minutes a day a few days a week. They were not initially confortable with the sites and sounds of public streets but over time they became accustomed. Overtime they slowly gained confidence with their new public surroundings. It just takes time. With the training being the same for both, I have noticed one of them adapts to new things quicker than the other. Cheeto is a natural public ham and really loves to meet strangers.

    • @agavejon
      @agavejon  Před 10 lety

      Yes, both are full Bengals. They are not related and come from different parents. Both have completely different personalities. Kona is dominant in the house but Cheeto is fearless outside. We always run into dogs out on the street. Cheeto always confidently approaches them first no matter there size. He's a little too confident, but that's what makes things interesting some times.

    How old were they when you started leash training them and how long did it take to get to this point?

    • @agavejon
      @agavejon  Před 9 lety

      Nicole Stookey We started them as soon as we got them. The earliest they should allow you to take a kitten is 8 weeks. We put the H-type harness on the probably my the second week that we had them. Cheeto we got at 12 weeks at Kona was 8 weeks.

    • @agavejon
      @agavejon  Před 9 lety

      ***** Just go slow and observe how they react as you progress. When you put on a harness make sure not to use the leash at first and to distract them with toys and food to make the experience positive until they become used to the harness.

    • @agavejon
      @agavejon  Před 9 lety

      ***** Some just attach the leash and see how it goes. It may go quick and easy or it may not, all cats seem to have there own unique adjustment period. I used the great outdoors the first time i connected the leash. They are so busy taking in the sites and smells the first time they go outside that they didn't even notice the leash was connected.

    • @agavejon
      @agavejon  Před 9 lety

      ***** The backyard was first, then the front yard. At first they didn't make it out of the front yard without getting scared. In a few weeks we were a few houses down the street. Probably about six months to get them confidently around the block. Also as they age and progress with training they continue to gain confidence in life and there surroundings. Hope this helps, let me know how it goes.
      Agavejon!

    • @agavejon
      @agavejon  Před 7 lety

      well, sometimes cats just stop and won't go any further, just carry the cat at that point. As far as a straight path, just let them mostly go the way they want to go within reason at first. But yes overtime as you both get more training at this you can begin to steer them in the direction you want to go.
