It too me a while to realize that was a square pot. Very unusual. Anyway I wouldn’t worry about the flower…would be cool, but I still like the tree as is.

didnt you know its hip to be square!! but yeah the flowers would be cool to confirm it is actually a lilac, but im 99.99% sure it is, so im happy enough with that. the flowers can be attempted again in the future

The main trunk looks interesting! Hopefully it will backbudding the next season! And I think it needs a bigger pot for flowering! Looking forward to see how it develops, thanks for the video!

@@BackGardenBonsai by the way, Ian, do you use any fertiliser? It might help having flowers!

I've decided to plant my lilac back in the ground. It's been 5 years without flowers now, I guess same as yours, and I tried to do a literati type shape but in the end mine is just a waste of pot space! Yours is looking great though. I'm sure it'll flower someday.....

cheers dave. yeah i think mine needs to go in the ground for anything to happen. haha i think i will just keep pruning it now and focus on that

Your patience with the lilac is commendable, brother. I have been giving the middle finger to this species as of late. Both yard trees and potted trees.
I hope she flowers for you, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. Not until you have more room to grow it out, or replace it with a dwarf variety.
That root work sure was fun though, wasn’t it? I was digging that!

cheer, yeah i have given up on it now. i only wanted them to prove it was indeed a lilac, but im happy enough it is, so i will just get back to the actual work now.

That's a lotta roots! Probably why you didn't get much growth last season. I personally would take off the lowest branch and focus on branch structure. Once that's locked in, then you can let it grow wild. Keep up the good work.

Keep at it, maybe go for some heavy fertilization to build up the foliage which may lead to flowering. My lilac, which is full-size monster flowers may time.
