One of the best things about ReZero I’ve always said is Tappei’s skill at writing both people and events, the depth that he has gone to in forming the connections for people, of explaining literally every tiny little part of the story for the character interactions is rarely seen. It’s one of my absolute favourite books and it’s one of the best anime’s to have come from another source. Now we know “why” Promises are so important to Emilia and we’ll know why her thoughts aren’t equal to that of her age soon, it is fantastically paced out and delicately thought out, re-reads and rewatching the series a few times really gets things to hit home hard. Worse part is that it’s only going to get more complicated in Season 3, there’s SO much that’s going to blow peoples minds when things are revealed there.
There is a ton to talk about here but the most important clarification to my mind is: 25:15 light novel series not manga, and yes they are excluding huge amounts of information, but the show is doing its absolute best. The worst cuts happened in Arc 3/End of season 1. In Arc 4/season 2 very few scenes or clues are cut entirely, but lots of important conversations/clues are cut from an in-depth explanation to a one-liner. also 45:25: Pope Gregory originally 2 sins that were later removed from the list Vainglory/Vanity and Acedia/ Melancholy. These seem to exist in Re-zero world. I'm sure there will be more comments on this. 57:45: not explained in the anime but the spirits were in fact working for Pandora and so intentionally led Emilia to the Seal. 1:06:35 Emilia's stuff is happening roughly 100 years ago, Betty/Sanctuary's stuff is happening roughly 400 years ago.
Persona 5 also uses Vanity/Vainglory as one of its sins. From my memory, Vanity was rolled into pride and Melancholy was rolled into Sloth in Catholic history.
One of the reasons why this is one of my favourite Re:Zero reaction channels is because you guys treated it properly. Not just the surface level stuff, but actually trying to analyse how genuinely deep this show is. Some other Reaction channels (I won't name) are great with some stuff like Jujutsu Kaisen where they just react with strong emotions, but utterly suck in Re:Zero reactions cause so many things fly over their heads and they miss the point of so many scenes.
40:00 Flugel's mentioned in Season 1, as the guy who planted the giant tree several hundred years ago. Y'know, the tree that they blew up to crush the White Whale.
Quick Clarification. Re Zero is a Light Novel adaptation. We do have a manga but at the time S2 was airing the manga adaptation was behind the anime. In a few months the manga will be ahead of the anime for the first time temporarily.
I always suspected them mainly because they took her to the seal, I didn't know it was confirmed in the light novel (I read Priestela's arc after the end of the second season, but I was too lazy to read what came before)
I remember Emilia getting angry at Subaru for calling her a fairy. Which he assumed was some cultural difference that fairies would be a bad thing in this world. But it seems she somehow knew or remembered of such "fairies" (what she called those spirits) as a bad thing.
I seriously recommend reading the wikipedia article on the deadly sins, but in short: the list was not always the seven that we're familiar with, the list was revised in the 6th Century AD and of particular note: Vainglory (boasting) was folded into Pride, and Acedia (apathy) was folded into Sloth.
Characters in anime usually aren't this disturbing for me but Pandora's innocent voice and cadence, the appearance of a fairly young girl just wearing only a piece of cloth and then her powers are just 10/10.
the up's and down's of Re:Zero is crazy, most extreme emotional rollercoaster. and with all the time and budget limitation I'd say THE DIRECTOR FUCKING NAIL IT!
The director is super talented. Probably one of the best directors out there, but sadly we’re not getting him back for s3. I’m sure the new one will do a good job too
I love these lines from Fortuna: "You will never be alone. I will always be right there with you. In the memories that come forth when you close your eyes... In dreams, where you hug yourself and feel warm... In the echoes you hear when you shout into the sky... I will always be with you." Great discussion as always.
6:41 yes geuse is a spirit and flugel is Who planted the giant tree Furthermore, there are not only 7 sins, that is modern, before there were more sins. Re zero is a novel light The anime really adapted the most important thing to be understood although it left two pieces of information but that can be explained in future arc
Pandora is terrifying yet I think her description in the light novel makes it even more so. Quite literally a quote from the light novel when she appears in the forest. "If, truly for instance, it was possible to kill through beauty alone, it was such "beauty" she possessed." That's just a tiny part of her first description. I remember a quote from somewhere that to paraphrase says "That she's so beautiful that not even god dare touch her."
Basically Kadokawa(big company owning rights to Re Zero) gave the studio(WhiteFox) very few episodes(25) to work with for S2. Arc 4 which is episode 2-25 of this season is all Arc4. We know very little of Pandora but many (me included) have seen the parallels with the actual myth. Emilia is either hope that prevails through evil and hardship or a red herring and Subaru's fate in this world is related to the seal. Pandora seems to be a proxy, a puppet of a superior entity given her actions, powers and mirroring of the myth. This parallel is emphasized because Emilia/Satella represent good/evil or viceversa (not saying Emilia is Satella). Now the interesting part is we see an actual stored Witch Factor from Geuse and Pandora's reaction. We can also safely assume Pandora was related to a big event and to Emilia's parents downfall? This leads me to believe Pandora wants the sins to reunite (maybe in a vessel). Without going further into spoiler territory, is Pandora who summoned Subaru? Subaru's hope is Emilia; Pandora's hope was in the box, so is Emilia also her hope? Finally, Satella consumed the other sins, but maybe she actually saved the world from Pandora and Subaru's fate is meddled by Satella so that Pandora fails. This wouldn't explain why does Satella love Subaru or viceversa, though.
I love the irony that right after we learn that Satella may not be completely evil and there's more sides to the story, we get introduced to a separate ACTUAL pure evil witch with similar looks to Satella and Echidna lol.
Mr BRAIN , IT TINGLES !!! *sigh after saying that my cat is scared of me . Emelia is connected to Satella , but she is not i think. Question : Ram or Rem, who is better?
I don’t know if Emilia is even going to disclose her trial to him. It’s her past and I don’t see her explaining that situation to him anytime soon if ever. I haven’t read super far in the novel tho only like halfway through arc 5 cause i don’t have enough time to sit and read too often but that’s what I think though
Hello from Italy I really like your channel, especially when you react to ReZero which is my favorite anime it's very strange that Emilia doesn't remember Geuse when he attacks the mansion in season 1...or maybe she doesn't know that he was "Sloth"?
Emilia’s memories were sealed back in s1, plus she only met Petelgeuse on-screen while he was possessing the body of one of his fingers, and it was in a failed loop anyways.
Because memories were sealed by puck even unsealed they were distorted by pandora....regardless she does cry though if you go back and see, she doesn't know why though.
There were originally nine sins, kinda, Pope Gregory came up with them in the 6th century, the 7 principle vices/sins… melancholy, vainglory, envy, anger, avarice, gluttony and lust. Then later they were changed to the seven deadly sins, anger is wrath, envy, gluttony, lust, greed, sloth and pride. The main changes being that Melancholy and Vainglory were replaced, and Vanity is very similar to what Vainglory is. Ultimately Pandora is the witch of Vainglory, but re-zero changed the sin to Vanity… fun facts
Interesting observation about the witches and archbishops being driven by their respective sins. Even the more benign ones are an absolute menace to be around because they're almost compelled to play by type. And then there's Satella and poor diligent Geuse, who did very much not gel with their authorities, and it drove them mad. Neither extreme is portrayed as particularly healthy. Observe Subaru, who is also a hard worker and tenacious as hells. To the point that Emilia had to give him a lap pillow to make him ease up and keep him sane. This is likely the reason he can have the sloth witch factor (making him technically the warlock of sloth if he's not something else entirely) without it affecting his mental health; he has the super power of moderation. The story doesn't just include the sins as a cool theme to base its antagonists on, but as an integral element of the protagonist's character development, the very driving force of the story itself. He must not just embrace the virtues, but also the sins to become his best self. Just this season we've seen him temper his self-sacrificial tendencies with a healthy amount of greed, which would make him a more ideal holder of the authority of greed if he were to obtain it. By contrast, he likely still has a long way to go with pride. He has massive self-worth issues which he tries to cover with a sometimes inflated ego. This is likely why pride has this special status in the setting, and this would make him the worst candidate imaginable for that particular witch factor, and of course this is officially the sin he would represent if he had joined the cult.
No spoiler side info that the author seems to be using: In the 4th Century there was originally eight evil thoughts: gluttony, lust, avarice, anger, sloth, sadness, vainglory and pride - later called deadly sins with envy added and the others were merged or dropped. Yes Vanity is similar to Pride... I know there has been some translation issues (like Jealousy/Envy in season 1) so not quite sure how they map... but generally don't assume the witches you've met were the only witches that are or have been, after all there are apparently over 500 named sins in the Bible!
6:53 Flies are in serious danger this reaction (because your mouths are wide open so often) --------- anime only comment. The more I see this episode, the more I think there's a connection between Fortuna and Puck. They use the EXACT SAME PHRASE when saying how much they love 'lia'.
In Re Zero spirits are not the souls of dead. They are beings born from Mana. And Puck specifically is an artificial spirit created by Echidna. The same as Beako. And since Regulus is here that means he holds the Greed Witch factor in this flashback. And in order for a witch factor to be passed on the previous user must be dead. So at this point in time Echidna dead and it wouldn't even be possible for her to possibly use Fortuna's soul as Echidnas soul is in Sanctuary

I don't know how Subaru will feel about killing Betelgeuse now tho
I don’t know if Emilia is even going to disclose her trial to him. It’s her past and I don’t see her explaining that situation to him anytime soon if ever. I haven’t read super far in the novel tho only like halfway through arc 5 cause i don’t have enough time to sit and read too often but that’s what I think though
The original sins are 9 but then the Christian church changed to be 7 from what I remember.
Her power seems to work like All Fiction from Medaka Box.
it’s just so so good
Hello from Italy
I really like your channel, especially when you react to ReZero which is my favorite anime
it's very strange that Emilia doesn't remember Geuse when he attacks the mansion in season 1...or maybe she doesn't know that he was "Sloth"?
Emilia’s memories were sealed back in s1, plus she only met Petelgeuse on-screen while he was possessing the body of one of his fingers, and it was in a failed loop anyways.
Because memories were sealed by puck even unsealed they were distorted by pandora....regardless she does cry though if you go back and see, she doesn't know why though.
this is unraleated to any cannon story
but Emilia being named "the witch of glaciation" and
being frozen in time is slothful as well
There were originally nine sins, kinda, Pope Gregory came up with them in the 6th century, the 7 principle vices/sins… melancholy, vainglory, envy, anger, avarice, gluttony and lust.
リエリーの歌声は天使

anime only comment.
So at this point in time Echidna dead and it wouldn't even be possible for her to possibly use Fortuna's soul as Echidnas soul is in Sanctuary

what you see here is hope ⁉️
