  • A five-star admiral. Throughout American history, there've only been four men with five silver stars in the Navy. All of them served in World War Two, and since then, the rank hasn't been given to anyone else. Watch this video to learn more!

    • Note [2] - When I say that enlisted soldiers do most of the fighting, I'm not belittling the fact that officers also do fight. It's just that enlisted soldiers outnumber officers by a ratio of over 4 to 1.

Another fact about Leahy, he had the first of a new class of Cruisers named after him just months after his death, which meant this group of ships was named the Leahy Class (one of the highest honours in any navy).

I saw this comment before the video started. Once I heard him say it, I was like whoa. But he still did a good job on the video

It shows good character to admit to a mistake and correct it in the future.

Admiral of the Navy George Dewey is senior to any of the WW2 fleet admirals. Admiral of the navy is the equivalent of general of the armies.

Actually, William Halsey received his fifth star during peacetime. Of the nine US five-star flag officer, William "Bull" Halsey is the only one to receive his fifth star during peacetime. Omar Bradley received his fifth star during the Korean War, which wasn't a war, because Congress did not declare the Korean Action as a war.

There were no E-8s and E-9s during WW2. Those grades were created about 1958. Your video is slightly skewed.
Commodore existed during WW2 vs Rear Admiral LH. Numerous navies continue to use commodore today.

I was under the impression that Admiral Kimmel who was a fleet commander in Pearl Hbr. The reason for this is that I was watching a special on TV and after the Congressional Hearing into his appeal of the dereliction of duty verdict against him and General Short, where they reverse the verdict of dereliction of duty and cleared him of any wrong doing. Congress had decided from the information he was not given information the government had and was given the wrong information that he had asked for. In the special I think they were saying that the family has been after the President to reinstate him with the 5th star as admiral even though he has past away since. I could be wrong but I thought they had said that he was a 5 star admiral and one of the few. Can anyone elaborate on that.

You’re entirely correct about everything except for the five star part - his family is trying to get him reinstated to the rank of admiral, or 4 stars.

Leahy did not command forces in a foreign theatre, should not have been given a fifth star. He was just a political admiral. And he received the Navy cross, he did not win it.

I find it amusing that every chief of police and sheriff wears five stars.
