Oh, wow! Thank you! I just sent in my vocal audition for The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square (formerly called "The Mormon Tabernacle Choir). I will not find out my results from the audition for about 2 weeks. And then, if I pass, I'll the test will be about 2 weeks after that!
In the meantime of waiting for our results, we are encouraged to prepare for the 2-hour test! :P
I'm a self-taught pianist (beginning at age 14... and I've wanted to be in this choir since I was that age and dreams of "someday" being in this choir. My someday is finally here!
But I've had plenty of incorrect self-taught decades of experience!;)) I've memorized many chords with my left hand, have good pitch, and a fairly large range of octaves, and my clapping actually comes naturally, but I worry if I will know enough like "register"
I have developed some of these things without knowing the names of what I'm doing. I also don't know some of the vocabulary words like "key register" and I've developed some sloppy habits, and I wasn't sure how I'd fare on the test, but I feel some confidence from your examples. I am very grateful for some natural God-given gifts with music. With prayer and practice, I'm hoping to get in!
I don't suppose you could point me to a few of your videos that would cover the following (though this did some of those things),
...OR BETTER YET... make a video on auditioning for the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square. I think it might actually make you an overnight success with the hundreds of us who are vying to get into this world-renowned choir but aren't sure if we have what it takes to pass the theory test. What do they mean by Tonal Center, Key tone, Register...etc... I'm not sure what they will have me do on those.
Here is a basic outline of what we will be tested on. (Please consider making a video. Then every summer at this same time, when people research how to audition test for Tabernacle Choir, your search results will be there! Have I sold you on the great idea yet?! :) :) :)
    ====
They write on the application form:
"...Advanced study in music theory is not required to obtain the scores necessary to
advance to the in-person auditions. [One must get 80% on the exam]...
     Notation of pitch
     Time division
     Note and rest values
     Time signatures
     Intervals
     Basic scales
     Major scales
     Minor scales
     Key signatures
     Triads
    2. Areas Covered on the Music Skills Assessment

The Music Skills Assessment includes the following tests, some of which are written while others require you to
listen and select the best answer.
    Music Fundamentals (written)
    Tonal Memory (aural)
    • Listen to a solid chord and an arpeggiated chord.
    • Decide if the first, second, third, or fourth note of the arpeggiated chord is changed from the notes in the
    solid chord.
    Melody Recognition (aural)
    • Listen to a melody played alone, then harmonized.
    • In the harmonized version, decide if the melody is in the highest, middle, or lowest part.
    Pitch Recognition (aural)
    • Listen to the key tone (first note shown), and determine the pitch of the second note.
    • Decide if the first, second, third, or none of the pitches following the key tone is the pitch shown. Major-Minor Mode Discrimination (aural)
    • Listen to the two chords in question. Decide if they are major or minor.
    • Listen to a phrase. Decide if it is in major or minor or if it changes mode.
Feeling for Tonal Center (key tone, key center) (aural)
    • Listen to four chords of the key. Then listen to three tones played separately, and decide which is the key tone.

    • Listen to a phrase. Decide which of the notes is the key tone.
    Auditory-Visual Discrimination (aural and visual)
    • Listen to four measures. Identify which measures are played differently in pitch from the notation.
    • Listen to four measures. Identify which measures are played differently in rhythm from the notation.
    Musical Aptitude (aural)
    • Your natural aptitude for musical activity is tested by a series of short musical statements followed by musical answers. You are asked to determine whether they are alike or different, either tonally or
    rhythmically.

Wouldn't it be fun to go over these in a new video this week? I'd be happy to be a zoom guest and be the "test take" if you'd like to make it more interesting. :)
Well, I know this is a long shot, but I thought I'd ask you anyhow. You are very gifted at the piano and your singing was pleasant too! I wish you all the best, even if you don't want to make a video on this!
    Regards, Christine
