  • Got to install the Trask Vented Transmission Cover in order to keep my Milwaukee 8 motor from building up high pressure in the crank case as a result of blow by gasses during combustion. Harley's modern engines have a side efffect during combustion of blow by gasses that escape into the crank case and tend to push oil out trough vent holes into the air intake. A few solutions were found and one of them is venting the crank case through the top of the transmission cover. I installed the Trask cover in this video...

    I install that approximately two years ago, it did reduce the amount of blow by approximately 50%. I then install the BA feuling air filter, which than completely stopped all the misty oil going into the Piston heads.

    Don't forget to add a Feuling sump plug(if you haven't already) to aid in sump oil evacuation. Feuling claims an additional 20% increase in sump oil siphoning, because the factory sump plug protrudes into the oil drain port, partially blocking it.

    • @lancmac

      That works for 17 to 20 models. Since then the sump is improved.. but it doesnt hurt anything.

      @@lancmac Are you referring to the updated oil pumps that have increased oil scavenging over their predecessors? I am unaware of any changes to the '21+ M8 cases themselves.

    Excellent video, step by step, good instruction, short cuts etc. - as usual. Much better than can be said about other videos on this subject. I broke the bolt with a long arm hex (needed the extra torque from longer lever arm). A small 1/4 inch ratchet with a low profile hex driver makes things a little quicker.

    I also run the Trask vented cover... I no longer get snot out of the head breathers. It is definitely working well. The only problem I encountered was the excessive amount of thread sealer on the bolts from the factory. A lot of careful cleanup before installing new cover. And of course the pain installing the new bolts. No way to torque bolts on cylinder side. The HD manual says to torque to 110 inch pounds. Hand torquing worked fine. No leaks. A simple job that took several hours. I purchased shorty Allen sockets and they did not work because of non clearance on the cylinder side. Your engine is now happier :-)

    Agree completely. I’m fortunate to live near the Trask Headquarters in Phoenix and when my RGS was in the shop for Kraus T Bars, Nick recommended they install the vented cover. Made a big difference. I would also recommend installing a zip tie where the hose connects as mine came loose a few times.

    Harley's new seal in the M8's built mid 2019 and newer, maintains a more consistent pressure in the crankcase and keeps the oil pump primed. It better isolates the crankcase from the cam chest. The pressure is bleed off the crankcase into the camchest and blah blah blah from there. Long story short, if I were to vent anything, and I do, it would be the heads with an external breather system into a catch can or similar. If you're worried about warranty, better to get one through a company like Motorcycle Agent which covers you even with additions to your bike which Harley would consider a void in warranty.

    Swivel (universal) sockets and wobbly extensions make the job a breeze. I put a short piece of 3/16' allen in a 1/4" drive 3/16' swivel socket on a wobbly extension.

  • @MrGus4440
    @MrGus4440 Před rokem +1

    You were talking about two different things. Venting the oil mist vaper from the engine crankcase is separate from venting the transmission. The M8 tends to transfer transmission oil into the primary cover. Older Harleys used to ent the crankcase to atmosphere until the EPA made them vent to the combustion chamber.

    • @trekbsg
      @trekbsg Před rokem +4

      The early M8s were having an issue with tranny oil being transferred into the primary case, the primary cause of this was because of unequal atmospheric pressures in both the trans and primary cases, when the clutch was activated (especially on the hydraulic clutches), the sudden unequal pressure would cause the trans oil to be transferred via the clutch pushrod port to the primary case, Harley has since added additional venting.

    • @FranBunnyFFXII
      @FranBunnyFFXII Před rokem +2

      This was only a problem on baggers with hydro clutches, this did not happen on Softails or the new Baggers with cable clutches.

    • @hughjanus590
      @hughjanus590 Před 11 měsíci +3

      This is what confuses people....they hear "transmission cover" and immediately wonder how that vents the engine. If you take the trans cover off you will see 3 cavities and one of those cavities under that trans cover leads to the engine crankcase.

    • @MrGus4440
      @MrGus4440 Před 11 měsíci +1

      @@hughjanus590 you are correct. I checked the service manual and sure enough it says oil circulates through the transmission case. I asked a tech in the service department and he did not know that either. But either way the the oil is separate between the motor and transmission. I vented the crankcase at the rocker boxes. Now I have ordered an oversized clutch push rod and a primary cover vent kit to take care of my oil transfer problem.

    Regarding CC vacuum on the M8s - That is a unproven theory.. No evidence has ever been produced or documented that this is a factor. It is a theory advanced by folks that were grasping at straws with sumping issues on the older
    M8s that were the result of the less than adequate oil pump and oversized sump plug on the early M8's. ! Venting the CC will reduce pressure and blow by as stated by trask in the product description but still does not solve the issue of hot oily air going into the intake and combustion chamber EBS is the best solution for the bike and definitely get a sump plug from fueling as to not worry if you bike ends up have sumping issues.
