Dont know why they are called brilliant rasboras in the US. I keep both of them and they look so different 😂 these Rasbora borapetensis (red tail rasbora) and Rasbora enthovenii (the real brilliant rasbora) are underrated fish here in malaysia. None of them are for sale in local fish store. We just need to catch them in their wild natural habitat
These rasboras are found in ponds, rice fields etc. at my working place & non of the locals keep them in their aquariums until I tried some & it worked, successfully. I could tell you from experience, for few years now, that these are one of the best community fish; easy to keep, will accept any food, doesn't bother any tank mates, very active, are not that sensitive to water parameters, they'll stay at the upper part of the aquarium but will also pick food from the bottom
I managed to stumble across these at my local pretty store and scooped them up but unfortunately couldn't find any information on them so I'm really grateful for your video.
Thanks for the video man! I love that you're working with different fish than most other retailers.
They are so pretty and really fun! For sure not shy at all. Thanks for the video. 👍
Keep 'em coming!
Bob these are one of my favorite fish, for all the reasons you listed AND because they are inexpensive. I currently keep them with Gold Barbs and some show Angelfish. The love lurking in the floating plants when not swimming around the tank. They eat take Daphnia, Bug Bites, and frozen foods. You've let the cat (or fish) out of the bag on a well kept secret. lol
Pro tip. Feed them then wait till they're done to show off that schooling behavior. I have the scissor tail Rasbora and they typically settle down after a meal to aid digestion
Thanks for introducing me to a new fish species. They are beautiful and surly one to consider for schooling.
They can truly jump (but not sure if they'll attempt when the water parameters are all good). I'll share my experience. I just lost one of my fish that are similar looking to these - but very beautiful fish, with two yellow spots on their tails, silver body with greyish top, they turned slightly orangey near the head after introducing them to my mildly planted tank. I got eight of them and it was fun to watch them school, until one died all of a sudden and showed some red spots on the belly. A few days later, another one seemed a bit odd as it wasn't hanging out with others and was slow or didn't bother about food. Then I noticed a bit of white patch on it's side and wanted to treat it, boy it was truly difficult catching him - took me several minutes of chasing with a net in the tank till I was able to trap him and then put him in a bucket that was less than half filled with the tank's water and medication added in. I placed it on a higher surface, which was a bit dark - to avoid the toddler running into it. And then went for a short while and returned about an hour ago, to my surprise he wasn't there and then found him dead nearby on the floor - he had to have jumped several inches high, if not nearly a foot high and must have taken a hard hit on the floor. Feeling devastated from the sight of it.
Those rasbora are so cool bob
One of my favorite species 👍
I have a bunch of these that I got to school with my Brevibora Cheeya (bycatch, a bigger meaner cousin of dorsiocellata the emerald eye rasbora) and they all school together pretty tightly - not too fussy as long as the other fish are about the right size and shape. If you want a spectacular larger rasbora, the porthole rasbora (R. cephalotaenia) gets to maybe 4 inches and is mirror shiny with slight iridescent undertones. I would love more but the one I have was imported by accident again as bycatch with my dorsiocellata. I'd love to see more of them in the hobby!
I kept these fish years ago...I loved them. I must get them again some day.
My local fish store has a bunch of them in stock and said no one really wants them. I believe they'll be coming home to live in my planted 75. Very cool little fish
Love the colors, not just one. I will have to investigate their availability here.
About time, i havent seen a video on them from any major channel. My Lfs always stocks these.
Beautiful fish😊😊😍😍
Pretty!!
Caught some of those at a local lake, immediately fell in love
My red tail (leo) just passed away who lived for 10 years. He was a trooper as when I first got him my filter broke and caused my tank to look like a tank that look like finding Nemo with only one other Rasbora, who didn't make it . He lived through that for about a year and a half and lived for 10 to 11 years. Passing away this week due to an infection :( i got him 2 other buddies when i finally cleaned that tank and he lived for so long, I'm grateful he saw a better day and i cant believe he did for this long
Nice fish
awesome fish. A big school of them would be outstanding
Pretty, pretty fish. Sturdy, and great schooling behavior. What more could you want? They are awesome.
👍💕👍
I like how their stripe is a nice solid black all the way through.
I got a 29 gallon full of them with a panther crab
Maybe i just need more. I have 7 now (2.5 to 3 in) with 6 lf danio and a young bristlenose pleco. They startle back to the top back left corner in my 29g.
I have a school of 15, they are entertaining for sure. My lfs was selling them real cheap so grabbed them up.
Check out cherry spot Rasboras too. Very similar looking but they have red on their dorsal fin as well. Neat little fish.
Love them. Had them with rainbows, buenos aires tetras,Colombian tetras, gouramis, angels etc
I love small fish in big tanks!
Very very nice kind of looks like a Denison Barb
these are not R. einthovenii, these are R. borapetensis
I bought 8 at my lfs and they are very shy. 78f, 29g, 7.0 ph, 2kh 6gh, 0 am 0 nitrite
Would say they are not Rasbora einthovenii but instead, Rasbora borapetensis.
I initially thought so to. But they are much larger than what borapetensis are supposed to be.
Borapetensis and einthovenii grows to roughly the same size if I'm not mistaken. Rasbora einthovenii is native to where I live and they don't exhibit red caudal colourations. Borapetensis and rubrodorsalis are rasbora species with red caudal colourations. South east asian fish are not as well known as compared to other regions with lots of recent taxonomical restructuring to many genera so there's still quite a bit of confusion. But I'm glad you're enjoying them and spreading the love! More people need to appreciate Rasboras! They are so underrated!
Update to your 120 gal nano aquairum?
