This was possibly when her eating disorder was at its worst. Her breathiness is a symptom of that. As well as that, she doesn’t typically use this style of mic, and was doing a lot of movement for someone averaging roughly 400 calories a day.
She’s been very open about how she was on the verge of passing out after almost every performance around this time. When you compare pictures of her now to then, you can really see how thin she was at the time.
Now Taylor has overcome that, is much healthier, and is doing 3 hour shows with pristine vocals like they’re absolutely nothing.
Even at her worst point in many years, she gave it her best.
This song are hard to sing, she must control her breath especially when she dancing while singing

Wish her vocals were stronger. Saw a clip recently where she said at this time she really wasn't eating in order to stay thin and she's get so tired during performances vs later during the rep tour performing was easy because she fueled herself better.
Yeah, the playback is definitely strong in this performance but I honestly don’t mind it too much. Like you said she got insanely tired during performances because she starved herself. She’s a lot healthier now, and her most recent performance of Blank Space was amazing. Almost no playback whatsoever on her singing bits. She’s definitely improved a lot as a singer, though she has always been a superb songwriter and performer.

call me boring or whatever but my favorite performances of Taylor are the ones with just her and a guitar/piano. She was on point at All For the Hall in LA in 2010, not a well known performance but one of her finest acoustic performances. Or her performance of Red in a boat on the Seine in Paris in 2013. Or her epic acoustic version of Cornelia Street at the City of Lover concert in 2019. Her recent Grammys performance of Cardian/August/Willow was a brilliant low-key performance too, perfectly captured the quarantined mood of her 2020 albums.
I agree though that nothing comes close to All Too Well at the Grammys.

1989 is THE quintessential Taylor Swift album/era however. Every artist has an album that defines their pinnacle, and 1989 represents Taylor’s. Reputation by contrast was a MUCH MORE subtle success than 1989 was. Lover is in my opinion, a MUCH happier (albeit regressive) album than either 1989 or Reputation was as well. 1989 showcased her “official entrance” into Pop music, Reputation solidified it and Lover is continuing it. I have grown to like her as a musician, but it was really “Out of The Woods” that led me to respect her musically.
