- Digging apatite & titanite crystals with Jeff (Off the Beaten Path) at the Smart Mine. AKA Lost mine (Lost and Smart are side by side on Miller Property). Worth the drive? - heck yeah!

He who is satisfied with little, is grateful for a lot!
Smart Mine is right beside Lost Mine on same property. One of my favourite spots in Ontario to collect. There is a donation "mailbox" near the entrance and the money goes to a Children's Hospital. No fires allowed. Look out for poison ivy and ticks. My buddy Jeff has his own CZcams channel. Look him up at "Off the Beaten Path".
Is this area open to the public? I’m in Ottawa and debating heading out.
@@tyakpinar Yes. There is a "mailbox" at the entrance for your donation. One of my favourite places to spend a day
@@meMiner Awesome, thanks for the info! I’ll be sure to leave a donation.
Thanks for the add how, I like to see them cleaned up, safe at 🏡, 👍
Just remembered my bro. Birthday, today, nice memories!
Looks like a lot of work! But dang, those crystals look amazing. I liked that third cluster you showed us, really nice!
It is work digging in the big rocks and roots. But so much fun!
@@meMinerpeople who never swung a spade don't get how it's not hard work eh - it's treasure hunting :)
That was a Blanding's turtle laying eggs. So cool! Threatened species. Looks like you and Jeff had an awesome time!
I knew it wasn't a snapping turtle, which are common here. It didn't look like a painted turtle to me nor a box turtle. I have box turtles in a pond on a property that I own. I was told they are endangered. In the summer, there are sometimes 8-10 basking on one of the shallow logs.
Lots of good not's,love it😅
excellent finds there Greig, im determined to find some apatite over here but no luck yet
Definetely worth it! Good score, the both of you!! Darn ticks. Especially bad down south by me.
The ticks are really bad here this year. Winter wasn't cold enough for extended periods
Glad you had a great day rock hounding !!
I did! Thanks
This is going to be fun
Look's Like It Is . And For You Yes . But It Will Be a Long Long Drive For Me LOL. And The Little Red Bug's Are Out Way Down Hear To . Dun Had One. 😎👍✌.
Closed captioning is a hoot. “Date night” for tintinite, Smart Mind, answer ball, Santa ball, wee tonight, appetite that’s Jimmy, Anthem Ball ……. Thanks!
I can only imagine it's auto translation into other languages. lol
The privilege of witnessing a turtle laying eggs makes the trip worth while.
There was another one (smaller) too. Very nice to see
Poison Ivy and Tick's make for a fun rip !!!!!!
I am still recovering. Pulled out a tick head from one of the bites yesterday
@@meMiner yikes
Keep an eye on the tick bite. Tenacious little buggers! Hubby had one that started borrowing in as well. Like youself got medical care asap.
What is 'black anthebal'? Another Excellent Video..bad ticks though. God Bless!
It is a name used locally for the various black minerals that are probably better classified as a hornblende or fluoro-richterite.
I finally got around to buying one of those textile guns you recommended, such a useful tool. Have you ever used one of those Termacells? they are surprisingly awesome imo. I use one in the deep woods doing archaeology for a couple years now. Easy to refill the cells and butane once you have seen a youtube video or 2. The battery ones are nice, but need to get the ones designed to be carried around as the other models use really weak magnets and it tends to come apart in a backpack. They also have the added bonus of driving away ticks. Sry i never replied to your last email, had some really bad health problems come up and havent been able to think about much else for a long time now.
I tried thermacells when they first came out and weren't well made nor did they work very well. I stick to old school when the bugs are bad and use spry with deet and if the bugs are downright awful, a bug jacket.
@@meMiner Bug net is my fall back as well.
You definately had a bucket of beauties. Thanks for sharing.
im jealous haha my parents went there yesterday, im envious for some apatite
I bet they did well. You will have to raid their rocks. ;-)
@@meMiner I’m hoping they scored some cool Ordovician fossils
Does Ontario have any places where there maybe opals?
no
How was the drive in? Heading in on Sunday. I know it’s supposed to piss rain but that doesn’t stop me 😂
I drove in but I have a truck. I wouldn't do it with a low car. SUV should be OK
@@meMiner appreciate it!
You and Jeff found lots of crystals, clusters and plates that will look great on any collectors shelf.
I wonder if you'll make anything from the damaged pieces. Apatite is usually pretty cracked and problematic for that. But ya never know unless you try. Might find a cats eye pattern or chatoyancy in some pieces. Could be soft for tumbling too but if ya have plastic beads or even rubber bands for filler and do reduced tumbling times who knows. I think you've already tumbled apatite? I've never been to smart mine. One of these days. Peace! Herb
Great comment Herb. I already played with one of broken red apatite. I sliced it and tried to make two hearts. One broke when trying to cut the cleavage on the top. The other survived until my daughter dropped it on the kitchen counter. Now, I have a broken heart. lol
@@meMiner - Hearts can be mended lol. Get some 5-minute or 15 minute epoxy :D
I feel your pain Greig! I had a faceted stone crack on me last week. 12 hours of work down the toilet then still had to recut what was left from the beginning. I wasn't impressed. The glamour stories people don't hear lol.
@@skorpian34 It's all part of the fun. The broken pieces are now in my gravel driveway. I will try again sometime with a harder unfractured apatite and/or stabilize with epoxy 30 sometime.
Hi meMiner!!! First time seeing ya! Makes me want to get my hands in some dirt!!! Find some purdy crystals and rocks... I must admit that I had some anxiety over the welfare of the trees right there. Don't yell at me people! I'm a tree hugger and a rockhound. Just saying
@@joycewinegarner9786 For sure, digging around or cutting the roots doesn't make the nearby tree very happy. On the other hand, there are thousands of acres of trees in the area and the big ones get culled for forestry.
