I have always loved magic, I purchase my first magic set for myself but I didn’t have support so it was basically me doing tricks to myself. From working with cards to trying to make to make things disappear. Your videos have been so inspiring and amazing, I also love Dave.

I started doing magic a year ago, Your videos got me into it and helped me see the "magic" in magic. I have mostly stopped doing magic but I don't think I'll ever stop loving the feeling of a deck in my hands. I always carry one with me and I love playing with it here and there. Thank you Chris for teaching me this beautiful art. Hope you're doing good.

For me, juggling was the big thing when I was younger. My dad had a friend who did magic, and once he taught me a few things, I practiced regularly. I was around magicians and did more with magic (incorporating some basic stuff into a juggling routine), but I study it more today. (Likely, because there's easier access to learning online than having to drive 50 miles to a magic store to buy a booklet with hand-drawn scrawls that sometimes didn't even make sense. [But I kinda loved that, too! 😀]) The reason I don't pursue it is I don't prioritize it like I do writing and a couple other things. But damn, I love it...and always will...

I think I started to enjoy magic again when I started seeing it through the eyes of the performer, specifically from you. Your passion for the craft and technique resonates.
Also with Penn and Teller’s Fool Us, to put magic into a different realm of perspective was a genius transformation.

I never really stopped collecting cards or doing magic casually to my family and friends. Being someone who understood the improv aspect it actually helped me in life to a huge extent. It built confidence for me. Once I got a bit older I had too much to do to keep practicing and keep improving, even though I still break out a deck every now and again.

Not surprising. "Conmen" and "magicians" used to be related if not the exact same in the old days. "Sleight of hand" was perceived negatively during those times since adept practitioners of such were generally shared between thieves and magicians...

I stopped doing magic halfway through my first semester at college. The main reason was I hated how main stream magic was more about showing off to other magicians or worse those thirst trappy magicians.
I like the magicians that focus on the audience having fun. (Jay Sankey is top tier on this). It does seem like this kind of magic is finally coming back and seeing more magicians like you becoming popular (again). Makes me kinda want to get into it again.

I really enjoyed that format of content. Just a laid back, candid, not overly produced discussion about a simple topic. You should do more of that. Even your channel update videos which aim to be "just chatting" feel very heavy and dramatic the way they're shot. They don't feel cozy at all. This just felt like shooting the s*** with some random friend. It was enjoyable.

Second, I stopped after you, Pandrea and Spade stopped posting videos on Magic. I guess one can say that stupid that I shouldn’t do it because yall do but you guys were what kept that fire lit for me I go back and watch old videos but new stuff always kept me wanting to stay locked in.
I’m reading Magic is Dead now, and just bought the Tarbell collection so I plan on getting back in soon.
Post more Magic please, cuz you’re awesome and I love it! Lol
Lastly, you’re my favorite magician of all time time. I got almost everything 1st related or CR related there is out there except the super rare stuff like v1s.
So all to say, thanks for all you do and all your hard work!

I'm 39 and I started magic in the early 90s doing rabbit out of the hat stuff until I saw David perform in New York and my mind was absolutely blown. I knew street magic was what I wanted to do. I fell even more in love with magic as if that was even possible. When his special Real Magic aired I taped it with VHS and slowed it down to figure out the slights. The quarter bite and Raven were impossible to me back then. I quickly found the only local magic shop in my area and met three " grumpy old men type" of guys running the place. They were the magicians magician..when they realized I was serious they sent me home with a stack of books as " homework". I would come in every week to the " Studio of Magic" and often times because I was too young to drive my mother would drive me. Whenever a any lady entered this small garage of a magic shop they would pull up a chair, turn on the charm( not cheese) and perform flawless slight of hand. Entertaining her often times for my mother while I shopped and learned. I became professional at about 17yo in 2001. This was BEFORE the internet, cell phones, or you tube were even a thing. So when I was featured on some local news stations having a camera crew follow you through high school was no small thing. Definitely helped with popularity points. It seemed I was destined to to magic. Then the internet boom hit. I remember thinking it was great, but didn't see the other side until one of the owners of the magic store said" we're all dinosaurs now kiddo". I suggested making a internet shop for them but they scoffed at the idea as if I didnt understand something. I didnt at the time. They were out of business within a month. It broke my heart then and it still hurts to even write now. At the same time my father was ill and our family business was starting to struggle. I graduated high-school started college but quit to help my Father and family business. I had to put magic aside even tho I was performing at work and anywhere I could. When the internet boom happened magic was everywhere..so the thing I was bullied for, I was then celebrated for, then became trendy and watered down. I was salty watching cookie cutter hacks find success overnight. (*cough jebreezy). I was maybe 19 or 20 and my friends, family, and agent where asking me to go on the talent shows or make a youtube channel. They didn't know what was going on with my father or at least the severity of it. I didn't want to watch him go down the same way my idols from the magic shop did. Maybe karma is on my side however because I was recently recognized in my home town at a gas station by none other than the news anchor on one of the channels I performed for 20 years ago. The idea of another segment 20 years later was offered to me. I have young children and hope to make it work for them. Having no time however is making it almost impossible. I work 7 days a week as an owner and operator of the family wholesale business. I wouldn't change a thing tho. My father is alive and well today. I learned magic the old school way from older magicians, and books. Books with terribly confusing hand drawings( see fig 29 lol) We had to fail to learn back then which made you so much better at reading your environment and how to interact with it. The answer wasn't always in my pocket.. I still do corporate events for friends and I never say no to a kid. I have many original effects that never saw the light of day.. I'm often told that the way in which learned magic shows in the way I perform. I just wish I had other magicians to collab with IN PERSON and time to perform. Thank you Chris for letting me verbally vomit my life story on your page lol. This particular video hit home because I worked at a well known casino for 4 years and interacted with celebrities like Joe. They hate what they cant control. I'm sure we have all had that one person who thinks he or she " deserves" to know method. Your a real one Chris keep the faith.

I started learning magic in kindergarten and was known as the magic guy through elementary school. Magic got put aside for music in high school and university. When I was 30 I really wanted to get back into it so I joined our local IBM ring and really went down the magical rabbit hole for about 15 years. It was a wonderful tool to have as a high school music teacher, but over the last ten years my new passion is designing puzzles, from escape rooms to mechanical puzzles to abstract logic puzzles. Magic has been shelved for now, but I feel a revival coming soon…

Not a magician but I love magic. I love experiencing magic and I love the appreciation I feel watching others perform seemingly impossible feats. I've acquired a few books in hopes of learning but my practice has never progressed far. My hands are too shaky and my showmanship is equally flat. One could argue I lack dedication but that's okay. I still enjoy the experience when it stuns me or when I see the move but can appreciate the skill displayed. Other times I get more enjoyment watching others experience the magic.

I remember buying the trick "float" which came with a dvd, a bit of wax, and a thread and I had a lot of fun with it- then my aunt reached out and grabbed the thread... I still love magic, but my desire to perform kind of died there. Your videos brought me back to learning tricks for a while and I started learning basic things like lifts, double lifts, palms, back palms, and productions but I never really put the time in to get anything other than the fun of practicing out of it.

I got into magic before youtube or the internet, my only way of learning new magic and techniques were either by pact with experienced magicians to never reveal the secrets of a trick to anyone or by aquiring books which was just as difficult to find as a magician willing to teach their magic tricks and techniques. I've never been someone that would go out their way to perform for people but if the moment arises and the materials are in my grasp, then I would do a couple of performances and then disappear, even to this day especially for the younger generation, hopefully to ignite the spark in some of them that I once had as a kid.

I am right in the middle of watching this episode and find it really amusing how joe is trying his very best to follow David's very simple moves, which to the untrained eye you can't even catch anything that's going on in the first place, let alone the very simple steps and movements you have to execute so well that it just seems impossible to do anyway lol. I tried doing simple card tricks and cardistry but fell out of it because it is difficult at first and you definitely have to stay consistent in practicing to see any real results. I'm trying to make my way back into it but right now i'm focused on Balisong flipping which has been really fun to get into and easier for me to stay reasonably consistent with. by dear

I never fully got in to get out. But I remember as a child having a “party magician” for my birthday and got a basic kit in the late 90s same with some basic puzzles. Still love it just as much. I feel like joe just doesn’t care as much. He’s just trying to get the answer of what’s actually happening.

I got into magic when I saw Mismag822 and Disturb Reality (Jared 1:20), and I was always practicing slights while watching tv and such things.
I'm not sure why I eventuellt stopped, but I think it might've been that none of the people I knew really showed any interest in seeing the tricks I had learnt.

I'm still INTO magic, I just haven't done really any performances since like 3 years before corona because work got in the way. I don't have a good place to put my magic stuff to pull out anytime I want to practice r actually USE. It's hard to get to and work just got to me.

I think magic will always have its place for me. But the boom probably overloaded me a little bit with all the content from different media outlets. I watched a lot of magic video's in that time, but after a year or 2 I felt like I got to see more of the same type of content more often. For me, magic is more fun when I watch some video's or shows and then let it rest again for a while. In the mean time new magicians become known, new tricks are invented and new ways of performing magic are being developed. This way I will enjoy the moments more when I do watch magic content.
I have tried a vanishing card trick for a few days when i watched a tutorial on this channel. That was fun to learn but as with most magic tricks they are hard to master. And that is where I wasnt motivated enough to actually practice every day to master the trick.
This channel got me into magic content at first and after that the puzzle content. The passion you convey for magic, puzzles and basically anything that sparks curiosity is really unique. Mostly I watch your video's when im sitting in my chair, unwinding after work because your content is more relaxed and feels less forced compared to other content here on youtube.
Anyway, whatever you do I hope you keep the content here as pure as possible. Some of the youtube channels I used to watch have lost their identity because they get distracted by the need to make more money to keep growing the channel and the business.

I was interested in magic as a boy, but I just didn't have the manual dexterity for it. Now as an adult (58) with neuro-visual impairment (from a brain bleed and surgery) and arthritis in my hands, I'm kind of glad that I didn't pursue it further. Thes loss would have been heartbreaking.

Yes, and yes. In days of old (about 1958), I started doing magic. It was too hard. However, I punished myself reading antiquated books and instructions, giving it a tremendous go. Then I got older and made several children and fed them. This took a long time. Now I'm an old widower and have returned to magic. Your youtube videos got me beyond the double lift doing moves I can't remember the names of. Thank you 😮😊🙏

While magic is my career/vocation, I stopped performing casually/socially many years back and (based on the book) I know Derren, and a good few other full time stage guys did the same. I certainly started magic through social insecurity but as that went away I never felt the need to perform it casually anymore. It can create a weird social dynamic, and I've definitely seen a lot of performers (no doubt I probably fell into this camp years back) suddenly switch into 'performing mode' which is partially unavoidable and it can be a strange way to shift an interaction. It's hard to avoid the feel that you're spreading your peacock feathers, and a lot of people can see that (even if they don't show it as blatantly as the Joe Rogan type).

Got into magic in 2016, went hard at it - my interet was in "gambling" routines and sleights, and i dropped off magic for a good couple of years. I was just so overwhelmed by the sheer amount of material out there I couldn't focus on one thing. I was burnt out 3 years in, even though I wasn't terrible, I always felt I never knew enough to properly progress. Fast forward to the middle of 2020 and I find Jason Ladanye, and the fire was lit again - but this is worse, because if you know Jason's work you'll know its not easy stuff, especially the hard core gambling stuff. But I'm back in my studious ways, and learning more from books than I did before and just taking it slow. I saw a video with Jason England stating there's some magicians who are less performers and more tool collectors - I find myself in that bracket, and I accept it. I also accept that watching videos of a guy with 40 years experience shouldn't put you off, it's a long journey if you stay on the path.

I don't even know why I stopped doing magic. I probably didn't have time anymore. And also I didn't like performing that much because most of the people were hecklers. I got into it about 3 years ago and I didn't do it for more than a few months. But in that time I also discovered your channel which sparked a passion for watching magic. I haven't done a trick in years, but I love watching magic, and also if I get my hands on a deck I can play with it forever.

I remember Johnny Carson talking about it, and other shows on TV in the 70's. I am subscribed to your channel and very much enjoy your content, thanks. Can't say the same for the other guy you talked about in the first part. 😊

I probably stopped doing magic stuff because I got lazy but lately I got back into it and just start to realize how much I missed it. I have to remind myself that I gotta keep if I ever got in such a lazy phase again. It really make me a happier person and when I watch the reaction in the spectators faces, I like to think that I share that happiness.
Moral the story: Never stop doing what u love or get lazy in doing what u love
mad love and have a good one

I would do magic when I was younger and I would get a trick down pretty good then go to show it to family or something and they would either be not that impressed or in my head I thought they were acting more impressed to make me feel better. also if I were to do it for someone else they would always ask to see it again and as someone that didn't really have advice on preforming magic I didn't think of just misdirecting to a different trick, I would try doing it again but it would be not as flawless or they would catch on to the method and honestly it was defeating a little.. I think a main reason people stop performing magic is they aren't getting what they want from the spectator when performing. you want to blow peoples minds and if you don't get that consistent high of wowing that person I feel the want to do it fails.. I still to this day love watching magic, I really enjoy knowing the methods but there are some tricks that see just so impossible and I wouldn't dare look up the methods since that is what keeps my interest and love in magic alive!
TLDR; give up magic cause spectator no clap for you :)

I did magic as a kid, always liked the effects and the inventivity. Never got into regular training habit. I did keep with the inventivity, channeling it into my engineering work.
I taught some magic to my kid, she liked but, not enough to practice it by herself.

This story has a happy ending, but the last time I gave up magic was in my teens. Magic has always been in the background for me, coming in and out at different times, but this time it got replaced by speedcubing, for what I feel are three reasons:
    1) I felt stagnant in magic. I was learning stuff almost solely via CZcams tutorials, and (in the mid-2010s at least) not only was there a limit to the amount of good ones that exist, there's also an even smaller limit to good ones that go beyond beginner level (which I knew I had surpassed, but didn't know how to).
    2) Cubing fulfilled many of the dexterity needs for me that sleight of hand did, without the risk of dropping a whole deck of cards on the floor. It also was just as good at drawing attention to myself.
    3) The cubing community was more well-defined for me. In magic, I was alone, practicing on my own, and even in my wildest dreams, I didn't have a community around me. Cubing has very clear paths to interacting with other people in the hobby, and that gave me something that magic lacked.
But that's not the ending. While I still cube sometimes, it took a backseat to a busy college life, and now that I'm out of that, I came back... to magic. Learning from places that weren't random CZcams videos, now having the ability to travel to New York regularly and go to magic shops and meetups there, connecting with folks via Instagram. I now have a community in magic, along with everything else, and it feels invigorating. The ability to go to a show and say I'm friends with one of the performers is among the great pleasures in my current life, and I feel incredibly privileged to be where I am. Hopefully it stays like this for a while.

Yeah, if someone has never tried doing magic or sleight if hand tricks, they dont appreciate this stuff lol David Blaine got me into trying sleight when i was in middle school, i figured out a few of his tricks from his Street Magic special and learned to do them. I wasnt an expert for sure, but i fooled a few friends lol i eventually got hooked up on competitive gaming and left this stuff aside, but whenever David releases something i want to watch it all. Which is one of the things i like about your channel, every time you do sleight of hand stuff and/or show off other peoples videos - its awesome to watch, every time.

I performed magic as a kid, but as I grew up magic turned into Juggling, juggling turned into learning that I enjoyed teaching, and teaching taught me about EQ and how to invoke thoughts and ideas in others. In my given profession, I rely on the EQ to give me guidance in the office, The teaching allows me to build trust with co-workers, the juggling is less obviously helpful in a cubical farm, but life is a struggle if you can't juggle. But I no longer describe or define what I do as magic, as I fully understand the processes I am able to weave, so I guess I have traded Magic for a better understanding of science and technology. But I do still enjoy, when my customers define what I do as magical.

I started doing magic when I was 10, I am now 22. I completely stopped doing magic but I only do it once in a while, I feel like no matter how much I would practice new maybe more difficult move, it’s usually the simplest of tricks that get the best reactions, so I just go back to doing the same 5 or 6 which get crazy reactions and never feel the need to grow a lot past that. I never intended on doing it professionally I just like to entertain friends and family once or twice a year. (I also find that if I repeat the same trick in a very slightly different way it just seems like a different magic trick so I can perform the same thing an infinite number of times 😅)

I never stopped liking magic, I just could never really afford to get into it, and now due to nerve damage that I sustained a few years ago, now I can no longer do any slight-of-hand that requires any dexterity. Kind of sucks that I have the drive and means to learn now, but I can't physically do it anymore. Stick with something you feel you have a passion for because you never know when you might not be able to do it anymore.
