I heard from a my Toyota mechanic friend (not specific to Toyota's) about this: it actually states in the Toyota OEM manual for dealership mechanics to remove the manual window cranks using a rag or towel. Just take the rag or towel and feed it between the crank and door panel, it will pop right off. And the metal clip will get caught in the rag so it doesn't go flying across the garage.

For my first car I bought a 93' XJ and I did a bunch of work to it to make it run and drive everyday, but no real crazy mods yet. Thank you for the mother of all inventions good o'l WD-40. Matt, I really thought you were going to smash it with a hammer like you did your finger last week, LOL! I would have also mentioned to lube the sliding track that the glass slides up and down in. Maybe you can use Lithium grease for that and go over the screw gears and the other gears as well with Lithium grease as I would have used the WD-40 just for cleaning the crud out of the moving parts. The nice part is the lithium grease is water resistant!

you can also lube the rubber or felt window tract with silcone spray . also a good trick to remove the window crank handle (clip on backside) is use a shop wrag . just pull around behind handle and the wrag will snag clip and pull off .

WD-40 also makes a lithium grease in a spray can. You should use that instead because it will last a much much longer time. Also hit the seals around with window and she'll move like butter!

Another problem I experienced was the plastic guide for the worm gear had fallen off and the end of the work gear was not curving around. It was going straight and running directly into the door metal with nowhere to go. I lubed the worm gear and reattached the guide tube. Now rolling it up/down is slicker than snot.

Not sure on the XJ's but on the WJ's (99-04 Grand Cherokee) it's cables that move the window up and down. The motor connects to the "winch" with a gear. There's no gears connecting to the window brackets at all. From what I've seen when the electric windows crap out it's the cable guides that have broken where they go into the spool. Only way to fix it is to replace the regulator but different regulators have different gears from the motor to the regulator. Anyways awesome videos as usual Matt. Thank you.

Someone told me once that WD in WD40 stands for Water Displacing Formula 40. Not really a lubricant, more of a, well, water displacing penetrant. But there seem to be multiple WD40 formulas now. More brand name than product identifier. That said, the easy reach dispenser looks cool!

For those of you that live in the rust and salt belt states WD is not the thing to use. I use the DEXRON Trans Fluid especially if the bottle says contains PTFE or PTF additives. WD is really affected by rains and cold weather and heat it's a temporary thing at best. Trans fluids with the PTF is a Petroleum Teflon it bonds with the metals. I will usually take my door apart and let the truck open a day or two for a few coating of the tranny fluid. I use a paint brush and paper cup to hold the fluid and brush it on. I do a few coatings of it over two days time and use Teflon white grease on the main gear. Has permanently fixed every manual and electric window operator I touched. The best thing about the trans fluid is will not etch clear coat paint. Can't say so much for single stage paints.... So use paper towels. Wipe off the bottoms of the doors with a cleaner when when you are done. Don't get it on mom and dads driveway do it in the grass so you don't get your butt kicked for being a slob... This application lasts a long time thru hot and cold weather rain ice and snow... I also use RAINX on the window itself helps the window glide up and down the tracks and seals.

Personal opinion here. I took apart my convertible's window regulators which were moving slower than death. Removed the factory grease and lubed them up with Shin-Etsu silicone grease and they operated about 98% like brand new. At five years and counting. WD40 isn't going to have nearly that long service life.

easy reach huh, NOTED! this could have helped me alot in the past... When I got my ZJ (R.I.P.), I couldn't get the key in the rear hatch/trunk lock, so I used all manners of bent spray tubes at ridiculous angles with brake cleaner + WD to blast out the dirt until I could get it to turn. Then continued until I felt the lock start doing something. Then it was back and forth between brake cleaner and WD 40 and pushing/pulling on the hatch, while turning the key, while gigging the handle until it finally opened with a stream of dirty fluid leaking out the bottom of the hatch LOL. After that I finally had the mechanism more exposed, and was afraid to close the hatch until I was sure I had it working(I couldn't fit in the back with the hatch down).

Will it be ok to use normal one instead instead of silicone lubricant version? Does those 2 have big difference ?

I tried the battery, alternator, starter, wiring, the ignition switch and the neutral safety switch. I got nothing! Next i’m replacing the ignition cylinder to help with the starting problem but i really don’t know if that will help the dying when put into reverse. I'm going to disagree. It's okay to clean out the junk with WD40 but it's a solvent. Take some bearing Grease and lube up that guide. Also if your missing the plastic sleeve under the crank, the gear can get caught up on junk in the door. It'll drive you nuts trying to figure out why your speakers are cutting in and out.

Is wd40 better than lithium grease?

Question Matt, what do you do when the gears are stripped. I can't find replacement parts. Please don't say replace the door.

there is a chanell called AVE he recently tested a bunch of the lubricant sprays and the torque to break rusted nuts loose ---- he does not make advertising or paid review videos but he came up with wd40 works better then the rest for breaking rusty nuts loose ------- chanel is AVE -- video is rusty nuts lol

Dustin Gould Yes but that’s using it as a penetrant. Not for long term lubrication applications like the window worm.

Sorry - But I don't believe in uncle bumblefuck's theory about spray lubricants. 20 years in the industry has taught me a little different story in experience than he explains.

Anybody else notice that the window wasn't stuck? I mean, I get it, a corporation wants to throw money at you to talk about their product. I wouldn't say no either, but c'mon Matt. Fake it a little better. Or even just talk about it being a hypothetical problem. To deal with a window that's actually sticking, I find it best to clean the mechanism with a solvent like brake clean, and then lubricate with white lithium grease. Then lube the channel fuzzies with silicone lubricant. Much better than WD.

well it wasnt stuck stuck but it was very dry and sandpapery and felt like the gears were gonna strip any second... like I said, that doesnt come through well on video.
