Jason Platt Is it because she has a sweet voice that can say mean things? I remember James L. Brooks describing the Sue Ann character as "...a nice lady with claws." I think that pretty much summed it up. Personally, I can't imagine Sue Ann being homophobic, though. She seemed pretty sexually liberated. I think the only problem she'd have with a man being gay is that he would be unavailable to her - but that wouldn't stop her from trying!

Long before the Golden Girls, this was Betty White at her most savage, wickedly funny.
Long before Martha Stewart, there was Sue Ann Nivens, a strong female character, a ruthless, man eating business woman, dishing out venom (and helpful household tips) with cheer as The Happy Homemaker.

LOL. Betty's delivery was always perfect. No matter which character she played. RIP Golden Girl

Lou and Murray are both aghast by Sue Ann's performance. And I love Ted's reaction at the end.

As someone who grew up in the 90s and 00s, watching this later on, Betty's performance here was litle a mix of Rose Nylund and Bree van de Kamp from Desperate Housewives (and I know Bree came later; if she wasn't PARTIALLY inspired by Sue Ann, I'll be very surprised), and I loved it.

Now that Ed Asner has died, she is the final surviving cast member of the MTM show not to mention The Golden Girls as well.

Many people know her as Rose from The Golden Girls but she was certainly at her best at her Peak when she was the wisecracking oversexed happy Homemaker on the Mary Tyler Moore Show

It's odd how Sue Ann didn't have a big part in one of the best episodes of all time, "Chuckles Bites the Dust".
That said, Betty was consistently brilliant in a great role.
