Your hammock tutorials on CZcams, as anyone on Hammock Forums will attest, are the junior college of hammock camping. Your trip report videos, especially in the deep Minnesota winters, are a pure joy to watch. They serve as the masters seminar in applied Hammockology. I don't know I would have ever considered hammock camping in freezing temps without knowing Shug can do it in crazy sub-freezing temps. Thank you for posting videos for the last 17 years.
Shug. Thank You. Thank you for being the genuine hammock ambassador that you are. As a co-owner of Superior Gear with Danny, thank you for what you have done for our business. We would not be half the company we are today without you and your endorsement. But most of all, Thank You for blessing us with your gift for entertaining. I truly believe you make the world a better place by being so relatable, honest, informative, patient and kind.
Hey Pete. We just had SG hammocks on a Winter trip to BWCA last week. Jonah finally got to get his out and I loaned Alex one of mine. He loved it slept warmly and soundly. Wins for all. I do really enjoy mine for sure!
hi shug i am a 51 year old woman from denmark i have been following you for 5 to 6 years. and have learned all bunk fun from you. 😃 I'll stay on your channel, you're super nice to follow♥️
Shug! I woke up to your ‘ YT’ video. Just so fun to watch you. I’m a Grammy and still hike with my husband. You are just a breath of fresh air😂 I found Jason Irwin at Tumblehome again (he was sick for a bit and was dropped off my feed😡) and he was mimicking you on one of his videos and I was so amused:). He likes you and I like that he mimicked you. So cute. Don’t need to answer this. Just wanted you to know we appreciate your taking the time to create content😉
@charlottesandager4607 Tip: Danish Outdoor Festival, 26-28 April, 1 hour of Copenhagen. Also first Hangcon. Greetings from The Netherlands, Theo "#survival" Brouwers Adventurer & Trendwatcher on many subjects, I visit events as press.
You're way more than a youtube personality to me. Over the years when no one else was there... you were. In the times that I didn't think I would be able to smile again... you proved me wrong. Thanks Sean. Love ya Bud.
52 female in Canada. Your content has been a huge help to me. Anytime anyone asks for hammock tips I send them here. Do what you want, you've helped so many of us.
Film what you want and show what you want. As a viewer, I'm 40% here for the information, 40% for the presentation, and 20% for the je ne sais quoi. People can become trapped by what they think others expect from them, and that probably goes double or triple for someone who performed for much of their life. The same drive and charisma that made you good at performing also can trap you. Just remember that it's all an illusion, and nothing is forcing you to do this but your notion of who you are to yourself and others. Cheers shug! You have our respect, adoration , and sufferance no matter what. ;)
Those are good words there Paul. Yes, I am a people pleaser. Show biz develops that a bit. I try not to be but what is to be is to be Whooooooo Buddy))))
I’ve been subscribed for at least 10 years. With any sort of subscription cull, you’ve never made the “cut list.” I’m in it for Shug, not what Shug does! You’re an inspiration and a fount of knowledge. I’ve learned all of my backpacking, hammocking, and a little juggling from you! I’m a forever subscriber whether you post or not. ♥️
Your videos have always brought a smile to my face and are a good diversion from busy days where I’m not able to get out and do the things you do. I’ve learned a ton about hammocking. You’re a natural entertainer, fun to watch, and convey your content in a very enjoyable way. Thanks for your years of putting your videos together. I’ve really had fun watching you over the years. Keep on keeping’ on, so long as the fun and joy they bring to you outweigh all the negatives. Cheers to you my friend!
Well, according to me you're a young man because I'm 75. Even though I don't do videos, I wouldn't even know how to begin to do a video of myself, backpacking and hammock camping, or even camping in the back of my truck in a Joy Tutus truck tent. I don't consider you old at all. If you are old physically. Yes, you're up in your years but in the heart no you're like a young boy that wants to have fun in the sun or in the snow? Or even the rain. We thoroughly enjoy your videos.Sean (Shug), and maybe if you cut it down to every other week or even once a month, we still look forward to you to that special video of you and your escapades. You're one of a kind and don't ever change the way you are because then you wouldn't be, SHUG. Sending you much love. Who knows what tomorrow brings? Hopefully more videos from our dear friend, Shug.
I've been watching for years, and sat with you for a bit before one of your shows at the MN State Fair. I was just getting into hammock camping when I found you, and you gave me confidence to dive in rather than just dabbling, and as a result I have been more successful at it and enjoyed my trips much more. So I want to thank you for that! I've stuck with you and feel a connection to you and your other watchers. For example, I've said "Whoo Buddy" to a stranger I meet near a hammock and been answered back "All secure in Sector 7" which was a bonding icebreaker.
Damn, you’re a good guy Shug! I love your vids just because you’re so real. I thank you for sharing and all the wonderful informational content that got me into hammocking. Your breakfast chat’s definitely the highlight but I also LOVE the low rider with mushroom and wildflowers. Such a great perspective. Kind of like you. You do you brother. Take a break, plays some bass, get re-inspired. Take some Sean time. Lord knows we need it. Anyway, thank you for all you do!!!!
SHUG, You are far from being an underachiever. 16 year subscriber here telling you are a legend brother. I don't do hammocks but I have watched every vid that you have ever posted. You are a pure soul and you shine like a diamond. Most of us just wanna be your friend and imagine having a fun hang with you. Please continue doing just what you feel and being your sweet self. All the love there is fella ! I would watch you clean fish. lol
My teachers said I was a gifted-underachiever. Gifted at underachieving I asked. They said...no Sean but you have some things we can't grade you on. Interesting! Ya' know I do need to learn to clean fish.....
Hi Shug, I found your channel in maybe 2014/2015 in the depths of a dark cold MN winter stretch. I can't even begin to express my gratitude for you as a YT Personality. I was always from a camping family but your videos totally changed my life by introducing me to hammocking. It's such an improvement over what I did as a kid and growing up. To be able to work so hard and earn a few moments in the quiet, while still hanging among the trees in total comfort, is an experience to strive for. My wife and I only go by hammock now (after some trial and error) and have found such immense joy, appreciation, and satisfaction in our trips to the woods because of what we learned from you. I mean... I'm not even sure what else to say. Thank you so much for this channel and sharing your skills with us all.
Everyday I walk by and admire one of your hammock prints I have on the wall. You’ll always be out in the woods to me. My brothers and I take a little bit a Shug on every camping trip. Just wanted you to know. All the best.
I came upon your video years ago and thought, who is this crazy guy? I went on to become a avid follower, appreciating that you are a very talented guy. I just wanted to add my appreciation and thanks for all the pleasure you have given an old guy in the UK. You have taken me to places I would have never seen, I loved your chat and think your videos are the most entertaining of this type. I am rambling but I finish wishing you with all my heart all the very best for you and your loved ones. God bless Shug.
Shug… you’ve transcended a specific genre at this point. We just like to hang out with ya and hear yur ramblings. . Unrelated but my dad moved to a memory care facility and I’ve been going back to visit my folks in Indiana from NC. It makes my mom’s day when I show with a tin of “Shugs Moms shortbread” every time. And dad is doing fine - I get to hear his favorite stories over and over and I’m happy to listen.
Hey Paul....glad you are still into the shortbread! And you call it a "Tin"...bless your heart. Treasure the tin. You have a good attitude with your Dad. That is so good you can think of it all that way. Peace.
Shug I'm waking through my 44th year right now, I've been half crippled up my entire adult life. You where the first person to convince me to try hammocking and camping after giving that all up in my early 20's. You should keep doing videos that are true to you, because you being you makes other people's lives more interesting. Thank you for all you do for us.
When I first got into hammock camping 9 years ago, I stumbled across your videos and have been subscribed ever since. I've always found your content to be a great blend of entertainment and informative. I spent the first 43 years of my life living in Oregon which in some ways is similar but in many ways, so different than the areas you show in your videos. In April 2022 I moved to the UP of Michigan and after watching so much of your content, the environment almost seems familiar. If that makes sense? The first time I saw lake superior I used your line "Now that is a lake that doesn't have any self confidence issues." I use it to this day :) Thank you for sharing so much of your time and yourself with us. I enjoy all of the content you share with us and will continue to follow along with whatever direction you decide to go.
From zero talking to wall to wall oration 😂 As someone who has 26 subscribers (All family and friends) and I am fine with that , you are the only one I feel a real connection with. You be you and I’ll keep watching. Thanks for being a great mentor!!!
We came to watch you via your fancy feast alcohol burner stove video and never quit watching you. Hammocks were never in my radar until we watched your videos, then I slept in one for a whole year straight (in my bedroom - less bears, more predicable weather). Many of the best sleeps of my life were in my hammock, and they'll be more to come. We love how patient, knowledgeable and entertaining you are with your teaching and sharing. Thank you Shug, for all of it!
I'll be watching you until I stop watching YT. I know what you mean about making videos, it can be a chore being on the "content mill". Loving the base stuff. Thanks for everything.
I am a 48-year-old woman from Sweden. I really appreciate your videos; I have been watching them for a while. Your pop-tarts, your coffee, and all the tips about winter camping are fantastic. When I watch certain videos, it brings me so much joy and upliftment to "be part" of your camping adventures.
We do. In the American speciality shelves in certain grocery stores. Also in online shops. I live an hour away from Stockholm and we have some epic trails all over Sweden. Being an introvert I avoid them ;) I prefer to go off trail, through the shrub to find a perfect hang. @@shugemery
I've always enjoyed your humor, love of nature and authentic vibe. A sad part of our modern reality is that the need for money to survive seeps in and kind of gets into everything we try to do. For me, someone asking me to "like" and "subscribe" feels like a pushy used car salesman. If your content is useful or entertaining to me, I ALREADY KNOW how to press like and subscribe! I have tried filming hiking videos while on solo day hikes before....it's not as easy as it looks. I always get the feeling that I'll run into someone hiking while I'm awkwardly talking into my camera with no one else around. Also, the squirrels just think it's weird.
That 70's Shug! Whhhooooooo budddddyyyyyy))))))!!!!! Massively appreciate the hang and chat! You continue to inspire so many of us! Thank you and of course Bravo! 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 🙏 🙏
Just my 2cents but I love watching you just because you are you and never try to be anyone else. You inspire and entertain. Keep on doing what you love and we will always watch.
A half hour chat?! All that time spent just thinking must have put a lot of tension on those vocal chords! Thanks for the words of wisdom, Shug (Sean). Watching you doing what you love without kowtowing to the algorithm is one of the reasons I started my channel. I'm a few years in now and, despite only garnering a wee audience, I've been loving the process of getting comfortable on camera, improving my editing skills, and just sharing my experience with people. Here's to many more years of health and adventure. Whoo buddy, it's time to make tracks! 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Kowtow! That is my new band name!!! Pow pow Kowtow occasionally eats sow in the here and now. Thankee for you good comment radar~ It does take a while to get camera comfortable but worth the effort to just be you.
Kowtow's yours now, mandolin and bass sound, spacey but earthbound, melody spins 'round, lost but still found, feet on the ground, wander about like an unwound greyhound!
During Covid I started backpacking, specifically hammock camping. It’s your fault, yes it’s totally your fault. I have always hiked , often putting in 15 -20 mile days. But after happening upon your CZcams I asked myself why don’t I start spending nights out on the trail. I’ve learned a lot about backpacking from you, but truth be told I watch you for the characters you portray. You are the Robin Williams of the outdoors. I could never get enough of you and the maple king, it reminds me of simpler times. It so great to see two,old friends cracking each other up with your ridiculousness. I always pick my excursions to avoid people, but if encountered you it would make my day. Thanks for the content , it always makes me smile and lightens up my day.
I'll take the blame~ The sleep in the woods is it for me. Always sleep deeper. I go way back with Hickery and we can just be ancient 12 year olds out there.
Hey Shug. I’ve messaged you before a few times sporadically, but I mostly lurk in the shadows. Watching and learning. But I’ve been following you since I was battling cancer in 2011/2. Your videos were always playing in my hospital room where we all had a good laugh. Most importantly was my kindled desire to have a central theme to all my activities with my kids and their friends. Hammocks are such a compact, inexpensive, and accessible item that we carry them everywhere. I’m not a hiker, it’s not my thing. My son and I fly a plane. My wife and I sail a small yacht. Overlanding in my Bronco with buddies. The kids in the local youth group with HAM radio, kayaking, canoeing, and orienteering where I volunteer. Everything is done with hammocks. There’s nothing like slinging a hammock across the saloon in my boat or under the wing of my plane. Set up a tarp and run some amateur radio in the shade with youths. The amazing part is that the mothers of all these mid-teen kids comment on how handy the kids are with sewing machines, since we used to make our own gear. Some still do, while others, like me, have moved on to a Blackbird or something. All because I stumbled across your videos while recovering from surgery.
Your enthusiasm and dedication to hammock camping have undeniably made a lasting impact, and we're honored to have played a small part in this incredible journey with you 🙌 Here's to countless more years of sharing the joy and adventure of hammocking! Stay wild!
Shug, I been watchin ya fer maybe 12 yrs. Now. I am 55 and am low tech. I just learned how to do these comments lol. There is a bushcrafter that is like you who doesn't as to subscribe and push the like button. He does it just to help people. That's what I love about you two. Keep it rolling buddy. Glad ya got your voice back but, hope ta see more Bass videos!
Long follower.. Never comment.. I've learned so much from you. Thank you for all the content! Really inspires me to get out, be positive and enjoy what is possible if you put your heart into somethings you enjoy (many facets as well). NC, will be fly fishing in Boone this weekend w/ my father and will be side-eyeing the river banks for the Maple King.
All that you shared here is why I watch. I also smile every time I look at your Vermont hammock artwork on my wall. Appreciate you taking the time to put out this video. ✌🏽
I've been watching you for about 14 years. You're the reason I got into hammock camping. I never even knew about hammocks until I stumbled across your videos. Thank you Shug, for plugging away and making great content.
I have not had an opportunity to continue section hiking the Appalachian trail the last year and a half. As a result I not been watching Shug's hammock camping CZcams videos. I am happy to see that Shug is still doing well and continuing with his CZcams videos. I find him the best there is on hammock camping and everything related. I enjoy his teaching style. He definitely is gifted as a teacher. Thank you Shug.
You and the good people at Hammock Forums are my hammock Heros. I’ve had the pleasant opportunity to meet and talk with Dutch at AT trail days and runs some ideas by him since I was carrying a hammock and sleep system I made myself. That same day I also had the pleasure of meeting and talking a bit with Adam and his wife from Hammock Gear. All of the gear I’ve made was based on things I learned from you guys on the Mt. Rushmore of hammocking, and I wouldn’t be nearly as much of a happy hanger without you all. I think the first videos on hammocks I watched were yours about 12-14 years ago and have always enjoyed your clowning around or juggling. May the Hike be with You Shug! and thanks for all the help along the way.
Hi Shug, I started watching for your hammock tips and stayed for your fun personality and your story. BBQ, camping, music, whatever you put out I enjoy because you are fun to watch. You still inspire me to get out to the woods those few times a year I can. Thanks for all your dedication to entertaining us!
You dont need to respond to this, but you made me more comfortable in the woods just by your videos believe it or not. I been on 5 BWCA trips in my life and I try to match your energy of just enjoy the experience. Don't worry about bears, or wildlife. Just exist when you are out there. Even brought some Medaglia D'Oro Instant Espresso on a few trips. So thank you Shug. Even though I cant put a hammock together to save my life!
Hey Shug! I'm sneaking up on my 70th birthday this year, and watching this and your comment about being 65 made me think of something my Grandfather said to me one day. He was slogging it out with a pitchfork at the tender age of 87 in his garden and I walked into his yard…he walked out of the weeds up to me and with a straight face said “ to be a young man of 65 again”..and he meant it! So in his books you would still be a young man…it’s all about one's perspective and attitude and I’d say you definitely have the right attitude. Cheers from Nova Scotia..MikeR.
Hi Shug - found you on hammock forums and learned tons from you over the years on hammocking and camping in general. Thank you - I appreciate the work you put into the videos and appreciate the opportunity to get out in the woods vicariously with you. Don’t force it. I’m not worth it. I’ll still be here if you decide you feel like putting out a video. If you never put out another video, my life will have already been enriched by learning and being entertained from the content you made. 👏Bravo sir, 👏bravo👏
Thanks Shug. You are one of the original CZcamsrs in that your channel was about 'YOU', just you and the stuff you do. Diversity of content now seems to harm a channel but you have done something special with the diversity of content, backpacking, unicycle, juggling, hammocks, BBQ, mandolin, cooking, base, F1, planes etc. Nice job!
Thanks for liking the diversity Kevin. I have someone once in a while that lets me know they are unsubbing as I am not doing just one thing. That is their choice so bye bye I saw.
I feel very lucky, not only to have found your videos, but having done so in my very first month of hammock camping adventures (Nov 2023) and grateful I found you before your retirement and leaving behind your LEGENDism😊
Wanted you to know my wife and I learned so much from your videos which we started watching in 2012 on hammock camping and took my daughter on a 4 night trip in Sept of that year at the beginning of the AT in Georgia which is where we live. I was 56 at the time, 68 now. But it wasn’t just about hammocks we learned from you, it was everything else, fancy feast stove use, how to light it, getting a boil, how to hang an Ursack bear bag in a tree, the in’s and outs of packing a back pack, how to use a Dutch clip, string a ridge line, how to use a whoopie sling (I never thought that would be strong enough lol), so much stuff we learned. One of my favorite videos was the one at night where you had all those different stoves lit and you went over each one. I tried a bunch of different ones because stoves are so much fun, how long it takes each one to “get a boil”. You were an inspiration to us, thank you for being there making all those videos. We loved every one.
I always likes the diversity of your videos.; The bbq, the airplanes, the music, the artwork, the Halloween, the clowning, the hammocks, the gear reviews, the camping trips. And I appreciated the self revelations in some of your early videos where we got a glimpse into you as a person. All of it together is very compelling. You’ve really put yourself out there over the years and I think people like that. Much respect Shug. I’m not a hammock guy but thanks to you I’m actually kind of an expert, hehe
Thankee for that. i've had some leave because of the diversity. Sorry to see them go but bye-bye say I. That is their choice. I hope I have been a bit more transparent through the years. You find in time folks want a bit more truth. The Expert non-hammock hammock guy!
Shug, I appreciate the insight on your journey and where you’re at now. I’ve taken loads of inspiration on hammocking, holiday baking, guitar playing, RC airplanes (not control line) etc from you over many years and it always gives me a lift that you are kind enough to reply to my occasional comments. I realize that I, too, am a spirited introvert. I’m a classical tenor and there is nothing like that buzz of performing for hundreds of people. Yet I feel weird singing happy birthday at a family party!
41yo male down in Sweet Home AL! You're the light in the darkness that CZcams has become Shug. I always look forward to seeing you on here. Picked up a couple of those cool stickers btw. You're the "good stuff". Take care! 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Shug, I’m glad you have kept your Chanel the same. It’s so often I’ll find a new Chanel that’s interesting then the Chanel starts getting bigger and they start selling things. Or, they start getting gifted things that they start reviewing……….boring! You have kept your videos real, and relatable! Don’t change a thing. I love you still use your mini bull design cup after all those years!
It happens easily. Folks approach you with all kinds of deals and offers. I treasure that coffee mug and have a brand new backup if my trust one ever goes missing.
Who likes watching an old man camping.... an old man who likes to camp! I've always thought that you were a very genuine personality, and I admire that. Thanks for sharing this.
I discovered hammock camping thanks to you, Shug. I’m lucky to get to the woods every month or so. I sleep like a log and get to press the reset button! I emerge a calmer more relaxed person, all thanks to you. I mean it, thank you so much!
thanks Shug, long time watcher. I got into hammock backpacking thanks to your videos, all of my hammocks, tarps and quilts I bought thanks to your reviews. I always loved your humour, always back for more. Keep it coming
10 years ago I became very ill. So ill I was told that this was it… not long to go in this world. I felt very bad indeed, really sick. I was lying in bed drenched in sweat feeling awful yet again, not able to sleep, not able to really be awake so I decided to watch CZcams. One of your videos was recommended and I remember the thumbnail was a winter scene. I watched you winter camping and I thought, what the hell is this madman doing, I could never do that 😊. But your personality hooked me in and your videos lifted my spirits. Long story short I’m still watching and I obviously didn’t die, much to the chagrin of my consultant, he hates to be proven wrong lol 😂. Your winter camping films helped me through those dark days and when I have a particularly bad flare up I go back and watch a few, for old times sake. I watch ‘em as you post ‘em too ha. I even bought a shug t-shirt! Thank you 🙏 shug and May Gd bless you in all you do, do less do more ‘sup to you buddy, Im just along for the ride. Bought myself a really cool 70’s lamp recently too 😂 I’m 62, must be an age thing.
First off...glad you are well and alive!! Winter is long here so winter camping is a must. I've come to really enjoy it in my hammock. Thankee for buying a shirt. Appreciate that support. Love that you got a 70s lamp. I think it is an age thing!!!
Thanks Shug! Your thunderstorm video on the Rock Jock with the Hickory Brothers is one of my favorites. Your videos always inspire me and make me feel happy.
well sean that was very enlightening thanks for being so open and honest, i have been watching your stuff right from the start and have enjoyed dipping in and out of your world it's a bit of fun and at times it has really lifted my mood , thanks again... wooo buddy!! 😅
Your love of teaching definitely comes through, and there is plenty of hilarity on your channel (but never forced or overdone). Of course it's true, as you say, that you edit and show us what you want us to see, and you are a whole person, with aspects some folks might not warm to--just like everybody else--but you always come across as a guy who has class, and I don't believe that could be faked so consistently for so long. Love the music (mandolin, bass, or whatever you pick up), and I hope you and Hickery get to take a trip among the maple trees very soon. Oh, and the burns (pronounced with a brogue, as in Robert Burns) are epic! Glad you are sticking around, Shug.
I've learned a lot about camping, backpacking, and hammocking from Shug! BUT, even more than that, Shug has been a spiritual guide for me. Like: jeez, if this guy can do it, I surely can! ;-) Love ya, thanks man! All clear in Sector 7!
Shug, I've been watching you for a long while and love being part of your adventures and teaching. You bring a lot of joy to so many people, you should feel really good about that! That said, you should always put your own life first. Making videos because you feel obliged to is not the way forward. Even if you put out a handful of videos a year, most of your audience would totally understand and support you. I'd be happy with a hiking video or two, an annual adventure with the Hickory Bros, and the odd bit of lolligagging along the way. Keep being you Shug, we love ya! Woo Buddy!
First off... did you have a pair of glasses in each of the pockets of that hammock? 🤔 Second, thank you for all of the hammock videos. Personally you've helped me a ton and I've sent plenty of people to your channel saying that "Shug has a video on every aspect of hammocking". As a creator myself, you touched on so many aspects of you tube and making videos and everything that goes along with it. Things that I struggle with myself (on a much smaller scale) with my channel. I appreciate you making videos and your correspondence with people who are viewing them. Shug (and I assume Sean) are genuine good people!
Shug you nailed it. Even though you have been at it for years you haven’t lost your touch. I have enjoyed every video you have made. Your a rare breed. You have the gift. Your a breath of fresh air. I for one am thankful for your contributions to CZcams and the human race. Thanks for being you.
You and I are both 65. Both from NC. Both have a BSA connection. Both camp. Doesn't mean we know each other. I started watching you when I got interested in hammocks and I can tell you why I keep watching... you're both entertaining and informative. Always have been. Learned a lot from you and If you ever hang up the camera, I hope you'll leave the channel up. I still go back and watch the old videos as I'm sure many do. Keeps me on top of my hammock game. I promote you to all my Scouting buddies because I really think they couldn't find a better teacher. That being said, If I ever run into you, you'll likely get no more than a nod from me. Never been one to bother the occasional celeb (yeah you kinda are) when I run into one. Too many people assume they know someone because they watch them on tv apr a video. They don't. To me it would be rude it intrude... see how I made that rhyme. 😉
hi, shug. I started watching you when I was trying to figure out what kind of gear to buy. You helped me buy my first hammock and you helped me figure out how to be comfortable in winter conditions. I still listen to you if I'm thinking of picking up some new gear. but I progress. I sleep in a hammock every night, indoors and out. and I teach hammock hanging (and other camping skills) to middle aged ladies. so thanks for all this.
Thanks, Shug, for all you do! It's great that you do you...and we get to enjoy your personality on youtube! I've learned a lot about hammocks from you and, at the same time, you've reminded me to keep it real. All clear in sector 7!!! Whoooo buddy!
Luv ya Shug, Been watching 12 yrs+. I used to be the weird hammock guy on the backpacking trail before they were the thing to do & you were my mentor. Now there has been a renaissance in the hammock world w/ gear. You’ve been delightful personality all around & I appreciate you! I’m not on FB, instagram etc. either!
Shug, you got me into hammocks 8 years ago and Ive learned essentially how to backpack from your videos. Always a joy to watch! You do you if you need to take a step back from YT, we support you no matter what! Wooo buddy!
My friend and I are long time subscribers. We also each have a Shug shirt, and a couple of other items. Your videos are deep at times and enjoyable. TY for all you do!
Your videos have been a constant source of inspiration in my hammock backpacking journey. Your charisma and genuine joy for the craft always shine through. Glad to see you've recovered - your voice is as slutty as ever 😆 Thank you for sharing the inspirations and details in your videos! Cheers to retirement and having more fun and adventures ☺️
Shug, thank you for the update. Your videos helped me through a tough time during grad school when I didn’t have time to go out hiking - not only the hiking but your humor and antics are always uplifting. Thank you for sharing your wisdom, humor and being real. Whatever you decide to share will be appreciated!! 👏
@@shugemeryYes, I had a great career as an environmental engineer in FL. Instead of retiring, I took the opportunity to go to NYC to teach Earth Science to underserved youth. The graduate degree allowed me to spend the past 8 years be inspired by young people who face big challenges ( homelessness, interrupted education, etc) but are still trying to earn a high school degree. Hopefully they were inspired by my love of nature & adventure. One of my favorite lessons was on topography - contour levels - slope where I used your video on the person who fell and needed a helicopter rescue. “Inspiration & knowledge” and humor whether in the CZcams venue or the classroom is powerful. Thank you.
I owe hammock camping largely to you shug! And my jacks r better quilts too for that matter. Love the channel. Can't wait to see what you cook up next. Take care and God bless.
Your videos are why I hammock with whoopie slings, and you're honestly why i got so into knots and ropework. I've never been a person who gets star struck (I live in southern california) but id be stoked to meet you because the knowledge and interest you shared with me is important to me. Thats all, do what you want brother never feel obligated to us. I appreciate you for what youve already given me. :)
Thank you for 17+ years of CZcams ING, it's been very educational and helped me make a lot of informative choices for My gear choices over the years, so thank you 😁
Hey man! No pressure on getting us videos. You do you! We'll all be here for any video you put out, whether it be next week, next month, or whenever! You really helped me figure out hammocking and I recommend you to many people! Love your content!
Bro.... you are so beautifully 'old school'.... the world needs you NOW more than ever ! ..... as a social commentator. Your world view is really special....
I for one am glad you dont constantly push out videos just for the sake of having a video out. I enjoy your trip videos and other random videos because they dont seem forced, and its fun to live vicariously through you on these trips. Every time a new one comes out its just a pleasant surprise. As someone from the 70s would say "Keep on keeping on my funk soul brother groovy". I dont know what they would say actually because I wasnt born yet, but I hope the sentiment comes through haha!
I still intend to give Prudence a shout out but waiting for the right video to so. You may have some 1970s in you as you got it right. No high fives in the 70s...the low slow five. I'm bringing its back.
Hey Shug! Loved this video. I came to you a newbie hammock camper back in 2016 and now your videos are like sitting down with an old friend having a conversation. I'm glad you're still at it after all these years! You continue to inspire me to get out time and time again although I'll admit I've been distracted from the hammock world lately and have been hot tenting this winter. Your newfound love of playing bass is akin to my newfound love of nordic skiing which has also consumed a lot of my time. Much of the instruction I've received has been from CZcams! I really enjoyed the free flowing conversation aspect of this video. I would certainly watch more if you chose to do more in this style. Thank you for continuing to add content for all our sake we really do appreciate you! I hope you enjoyed Boston, I live a ways north of the city and admit I spend much more time heading north to the mountains than I do south to the city. It is a terrific town though. Take care my friend look forward to hearing from you soon.
I like that new things come into our lives and we jump in fully. I plan to do more of these kind of videos. MainlyI want to share some of my circus stories. Especially the darker side! Boston was a great time. We stayed near Boston Commons and I had quite the time in Boston in my Ringling Circus days in 1981. Sort of relived some that. Great city.
@@shugemery would absolutely love to hear some of your circus day stories. It was really fun learning a little about it when you did your Q & A series.
Part of what I always loved about your videos was the absence of you saying “like, share, subscribe,” blah blah blah. It was appreciated and still is. I make videos just for FUN, and so my kids can laugh at me now and when I’m gone. It’s amazing how many people say “you have to make money” it’s wierd. I love your content based on what it is! Pure hammock awesomeness. I appreciate your effort :)
Love you man. Love it all! I love watching you camp when I'm stuck in a hotel on a work trip. Or just stressed, and need a little time in the woods with Shug. When I can't be there myself.. Thank you for whatever you "put out".. Love it!
i have always enjoyed your sense of humor and personality. some people just have a natural charisma. and i am sure it takes a lot of work to bring that energy whenever you film your videos, but there are some things that not everyone can just do spontaneously. your personality has always come across as genuine and spontaneously fun. it's infectious. i'll always come back and watch your videos, even if they aren't about camping, or hammocks.. i also enjoy music and am always interested in odd hobbies or even just a vlog of someone's day. so yeah, at least for me, there are certain people on youtube, who i always come back to because i just feel a kinship to them, i see something of myself that i relate to in them as a person, i like them as a person and want to keep in touch in some way. so sometimes it's about that person, rather than the topic / content they might produce. even if they didn't have the greatest production quality etc, i'll keep following them because i care. some people just grow on you like that. but of course, your videos are great, well done, entertaining, funny, and informative, and i still enjoy my hammock! i think i'll always enjoy relaxing in a hammock, who wouldn't?! keep on keepin on shug.. long life and good health to ya, whooo buddy!
Just me being me. When it;'s showtime i can turn it on. The rest of my time I just sit and mouth breathe and stare off into the distance..... Thank you for the profound comment ensom.
When I was young I did a lot of camping and backpacking in scouts, but I got away from it. Then around 15 years ago I was getting back into backpacking. I was finding it was cold sleeping on the ground (even with what I thought was a good sleeping pad) and a bit uncomfortable. Then I started to hear about camping hammocks. Shortly after that I stumbled across hammock forums and that led to your videos. Since then I hammock almost exclusively (I don't own a tent currently). I really appreciate your videos, and the integrity you bring to the format. I loved this video with the insight you provided with your life in the CZcams world. Above all I find your videos entertaining. Even if the content is not something that I am passionate about I am still entertained. You keep doing this as long as it brings you pleasure, but when you decide to stop let us know and don't leave us hanging (in the woods. . . in a hammock).
Shug, i have been a viewer for years and will continue to be. I appreciate the update and understand your thoughts. I first started following with your unicycle vids and hikes. Just be you, do your thing. You're the man of Sector 7 and always will be. I will watch until you sign off.... Thanks ....
I've been watching your videos for years. Probably first heard of you on Hammock Forums way back in the day when I was trying to figure this hammock camping thing out. If someone asked me today why I watch your content I'd have to say it's because you're like on old friend that lives on the other side of the country. Or, a favorite uncle or cousin that I don't see much. I too am an introvert so I get it. Your honesty, openness, and incredible personality is why I hang around (pun intended). Thanks for all the help you given over the years and I look forward to enjoying your next BBQ or coffee video. Keep stepping!
I'm just here for the Medaglia D'Oro. Seriously speaking, I probably would never have enjoyed all the wonderful mornings in my hammock without you. I'm not much for having breakfast in the hammock, because I always make a mess. But that feeling when you wake up surrounded by nature - best therapy ever. Then there are those chilly nights when you wake up in the middle of the night and just have to go. But that's another story. Greetings from Finland, where we have a lively hammock hiking community - most likely partially thanks to you!
I have CZcams premium, no ads. When I found you I was getting into hammocks I thought you were nuts, now I accept you are nuts, in a good way though. I am so happy to hear your voice again. All secure in sector 7!
I've been watching from the start, and I can tell you that I still get excited when I see you have posted a new video. We all need the clowns to make us smile.
Hello shug, I have watched your videos for years and they bring me great joy. I am one of those people that watch what ever you put out, you are a creative funny interesting guy. Thank you for all the work you put in your videos. I wish you the best.
I feel like I have earned a degree in Hammocking from Professor Shug!
He's a national treasure
100%!
I'm humbled to find out so many watched the hammock tutorials. Winter trips are insane but really special. Thankee.....
Head of the Class....
Shug.
Tak skal du have. Someday I hope to visit Denmark.
Shug! I woke up to your ‘ YT’ video. Just so fun to watch you. I’m a Grammy and still hike with my husband. You are just a breath of fresh air😂
I found Jason Irwin at Tumblehome again (he was sick for a bit and was dropped off my feed😡) and he was mimicking you on one of his videos and I was so amused:). He likes you and I like that he mimicked you. So cute.
Don’t need to answer this. Just wanted you to know we appreciate your taking the time to create content😉

You're way more than a youtube personality to me. Over the years when no one else was there... you were. In the times that I didn't think I would be able to smile again... you proved me wrong. Thanks Sean. Love ya Bud.

Love you and the vintage vest ❤

Probably one of the best CZcams videos I've ever watched. Total honesty and real. Thanks Shug, great content.
I'm a 65 year old male in the USA. Taurus. I appreciate you doing that Cass. I love Canada. My daughter is there right now. In Quebec.
Mucho appreciato Steve....
Feels good! Never got cut. Made the team!!!! Whooooo Buddy))))
Doing videos is a diversion for me as well. I get out of doing chores I planned to do...! Thankee.
So we'll said and true!
I just like lamenting the old card. Young heart and open minds keeps us vibrant rather than locked and shut off. Thankee and stay at it as well!!!
Even if only quarterly, we would anticipate and appreciate every one of them
I've been watching for years, and sat with you for a bit before one of your shows at the MN State Fair.
I always enjoyed those pre-show chats. Only way is to dive in deeply!! I do miss that gig. Loved performing there. Thanks for the good words.
Glad you enjoy the 'shrooms and wildflowers. They are so nice to ogle in the backwoods. Whooooo Buddy))))
Clean fish? 🧐 okay, I’ll watch Shug clean fish, too 😎
Hi Shug, I found your channel in maybe 2014/2015 in the depths of a dark cold MN winter stretch.
Nothing like looking forward to good slumber in the woods. I'm touched by your comment.
Been watching for @ 15 years of that 17 years. It’s been a blast. May there be many years more. Cheers!
Thankee for hanging in there that long! Whoooooo Buddy))))
Everyday I walk by and admire one of your hammock prints I have on the wall. You’ll always be out in the woods to me. My brothers and I take a little bit a Shug on every camping trip.
Just wanted you to know. All the best.
Awww John thanks for buying one of my prints. I like knowing it is hanging somewhere on a wall for a dream trip. Whooooo Buddy))))
@@shugemeryWhere are these prints? I'm interested.

I may be like my family in the UK says..." a bit to the left." Thanks you. Now I want some Sainbury sausage and Victorian sponge!!!!
Whooooo Buddy Matt. Thankee and enjoy good hammock slumber.
The first time I saw lake superior I used your line "Now that is a lake that doesn't have any self confidence issues." I use it to this day :)
Thank you for sharing so much of your time and yourself with us. I enjoy all of the content you share with us and will continue to follow along with whatever direction you decide to go.
Thanks for your wee story. It is a very confident Lake for sure!!!!
We have enjoyed the ride! Because of you 5 friends and I hike on the superior trail twice a year. Have enjoyed every moment.
I love that!!! Whooooo Buddy))))
From zero talking to wall to wall oration 😂 As someone who has 26 subscribers (All family and friends) and I am fine with that , you are the only one I feel a real connection with. You be you and I’ll keep watching. Thanks for being a great mentor!!!
All or nothing for this ol' chap. Thankee for connecting! I always recognize your moniker.
Love 💕 and light to all ❤😊. Your content brings a smile to my face so it’s content gold from my perspective. Keep up the great content.
Thanks and thankee.
I have heard of a bedroom bear! haaa I've enjoyed showing hammock skills off on video. I've about covered everything. Thankee
I'll be watching you until I stop watching YT. I know what you mean about making videos, it can be a chore being on the "content mill". Loving the base stuff. Thanks for everything.
For sure has its moments of doubt and weariness. But Im feeling renewed now! Thankee....
Shug and Steve Wallace make my day every time they post. I’ll watch you as long as you post Shug. Luv ya!
Thankee Sean.
Thankee so much Susanne. I've been to Sweden but never got to camp. Mainly Stockholm. Appreciate your comment. Do you have pop tarts in Sweden?
I too just remember the channels I like and go back too. They become part of my life. So I get it. Red squirrels are camera hogs!
That 70's Shug! Whhhooooooo budddddyyyyyy))))))!!!!! Massively appreciate the hang and chat! You continue to inspire so many of us! Thank you and of course Bravo! 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 🙏 🙏
Thanks and Thankee.
Just my 2cents but I love watching you just because you are you and never try to be anyone else. You inspire and entertain. Keep on doing what you love and we will always watch.
That is a very good 2¢ worth of comment!
Thankee for you good comment radar~
It does take a while to get camera comfortable but worth the effort to just be you.
Kowtow's yours now, mandolin and bass sound, spacey but earthbound, melody spins 'round, lost but still found, feet on the ground, wander about like an unwound greyhound!
@@radarbase Stellar word smithing back at me!
Sounds like you have a very interesting life going. Glad you kicked cancer's ass. What a cool hammock style...hanging from the wing. Whooooo Buddy))))
@@shugemery thanks! Work hard, play harder.
Your enthusiasm and dedication to hammock camping have undeniably made a lasting impact, and we're honored to have played a small part in this incredible journey with you 🙌 Here's to countless more years of sharing the joy and adventure of hammocking!
Stay wild!
Oh yes. I need to get that Draumr UL out into the woods come this Spring~~ Tak.
Lo Tech! Love that. I'm working up Steely Dan's "Peg" and almost ready to film it. Thankee and Whooooo Buddy)))
Always a good day when Shug uploads, been a long time fan.
Thankee for that.
Maple King may be looking...he is out on a trip. Thankee feller.
All that you shared here is why I watch.
I also smile every time I look at your Vermont hammock artwork on my wall.
Appreciate you taking the time to put out this video. ✌🏽
Ahh thanks for getting the print. Makes me feel good to know I'm hanging around out there somewhere.
I've been watching you for about 14 years. You're the reason I got into hammock camping. I never even knew about hammocks until I stumbled across your videos. Thank you Shug, for plugging away and making great content.
Hammock snooze for the Win~~!
Shug has helped countless hammock campers get the correct setup going. He helped me a lot since I started back in 2013.
Whooooo Buddy)))...hammock life.
Time for you to get on that AT again~~!! I'm still at it. Than for the good words.
Whooooo Buddy))) Love the comment!
Thankee for those kind sentiments!
Glad to hear your dulcet tones once more! I've enjoyed your videos for many years and hope to continue to do so for as long as it remains fun for you!
Dulcet. Romantic description and I like it. I still don't feel it is back all the way but time will tell.
Very glad to hear that you are more comfortable out there. Be vigilant but don't hike with worry.
Funny. Ahh to be 59 again! Cheers backatcha Mike~
I will not force any vicarious thrills. Or chills...or spills. Hammock on......
Thanks...I'm not done yet though! Whooooo Buddy)))))
Wow. Makes me feel all those videos were worth it!!!
Keep being you Shug! You are CZcams Gold! Thanks for helping me start my hammock journey.
Enjoy the hammock quest....Whooooo Buddy))))
Funny...one is performing and the other is begrudgingly singing and trying not to be too good in a small crowd. I get it!!!
Thankee for the comment.
"I will monopolize a conversation if it gets dull." 😂 Something tells me you're good at that. Love ya Shug! Whooooooo budddddyyyy!
I am. I try not to. But often fail. And I was a very quiet kid.
41yo male down in Sweet Home AL! You're the light in the darkness that CZcams has become Shug. I always look forward to seeing you on here. Picked up a couple of those cool stickers btw. You're the "good stuff". Take care! 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thankee for getting some stickers...love that. Stick 'em good...stick 'em well.
Yes. I'll continue Geezer Theater then....
You should definitely come with me to Red River Gorge. I mean hell... We've been you tube "hanging out" for 17 years . 😂 Woo buddy!
OK...I'm on my way.
I discovered hammock camping thanks to you, Shug. I’m lucky to get to the woods every month or so. I sleep like a log and get to press the reset button! I emerge a calmer more relaxed person, all thanks to you. I mean it, thank you so much!
Nothing like a good hammock woods slumber.
thanks Shug, long time watcher. I got into hammock backpacking thanks to your videos, all of my hammocks, tarps and quilts I bought thanks to your reviews. I always loved your humour, always back for more. Keep it coming
Sure hope that gear is serving you well. Whooooo Buddy))))
That is still one of my favorite camping trips ever. One thing I've learned is that you can't re-create those moments.
well sean that was very enlightening thanks for being so open and honest, i have been watching your stuff right from the start and have enjoyed dipping in and out of your world it's a bit of fun and at times it has really lifted my mood , thanks again... wooo buddy!! 😅
Hey ho Gary...thankee for the good sentiments.
Thanks for you good and fine thoughts there iPlod. Also thanks on the music and muttonchops!
I've learned a lot about camping, backpacking, and hammocking from Shug! BUT, even more than that, Shug has been a spiritual guide for me. Like: jeez, if this guy can do it, I surely can! ;-) Love ya, thanks man! All clear in Sector 7!
Truly...if I can then you can. Whoooo Buddy))))
Woo Buddy!
Good and fine words you typed. Oh believe me...it is all part of my life. Clown Life~ Whooooo Buddy)))))
Haaa....yes!!!! My readers and my progressives for seeing the camera from a distance. Making videos is a blessing and a curse right?
Breakfast from the hammock NEVER gets old. Love ya brother!
Never to me either! Thankee.
Shug you nailed it. Even though you have been at it for years you haven’t lost your touch. I have enjoyed every video you have made. Your a rare breed. You have the gift. Your a breath of fresh air. I for one am thankful for your contributions to CZcams and the human race. Thanks for being you.
Appreciate that Dennis. I'm overwhelmed by all the comments that I really was not fishing for! Whooooo Buddy)))
I'll take that nod. But if it happens lets chat philosophy of camp for 5 minutes. Whooooo Buddy))))
Good to hear from you again. I always remember your moniker~~
Thanks, Shug, for all you do! It's great that you do you...and we get to enjoy your personality on youtube! I've learned a lot about hammocks from you and, at the same time, you've reminded me to keep it real. All clear in sector 7!!! Whoooo buddy!
Thanks and thankee....keeping it real.
Luv ya Shug,
Been watching 12 yrs+. I used to be the weird hammock guy on the backpacking trail before they were the thing to do & you were my mentor.
Now there has been a renaissance in the hammock world w/ gear.
You’ve been delightful personality all around & I appreciate you!
I’m not on FB, instagram etc. either!
We shall always be the weird hammock guys. I really don't think most folks will take to hammocks. Some try. But it truly is only for some of us.
Shug, you got me into hammocks 8 years ago and Ive learned essentially how to backpack from your videos. Always a joy to watch! You do you if you need to take a step back from YT, we support you no matter what! Wooo buddy!
I like that you play your own music on yours too. Added bonus for you and viewers....
My friend and I are long time subscribers. We also each have a Shug shirt, and a couple of other items. Your videos are deep at times and enjoyable. TY for all you do!
Thank you for sporting those shirts. I sure appreciate it. Whooooo Buddy)))
Love watching you. I started watching you because I got into hammocks but your personality is why I keep coming back. Never change Shug!
Aw shucks. I think my changes are set. Whoooooo Buddy))))
Slutty Voiced Shug. My new burlesque act!!! Retirement is truly its own journey. Best to have a top hat for it.
did grad school pay off? working in the chosen field? Thankee for the good words.
To the Hammock and Quilt Life!!!
I've been getting into hammock camping over the last 3 years. You've been a part of that journey. Thanks!
Embrace the hammock quest! Whooooo Buddy))))
Kindly words Nithhoggr. Glad to hear you like whoopies. I too am partial to them. Hammock onward and upward!!! Whoooooo Buddy))))
Well deserved Shug .. the content you provide is not only entertaining but also helpful
Whooooo Buddy))))
Thank you for 17+ years of CZcams ING, it's been very educational and helped me make a lot of informative choices for My gear choices over the years, so thank you 😁
Gear is fun and leads to fun. Thanks for watching for so long!!!
Hey man! No pressure on getting us videos. You do you! We'll all be here for any video you put out, whether it be next week, next month, or whenever! You really helped me figure out hammocking and I recommend you to many people! Love your content!
Whooooo Buddy)))) Enjoy your hammock quest~~
One of the things that keeps us all coming back is that you have a variety of interests and videos that you share
Thankee for the good and kind words.
Bro.... you are so beautifully 'old school'.... the world needs you NOW more than ever !
..... as a social commentator. Your world view is really special....
I appreciate your good and fine words Adam. Old School to the core.
Watching Shug has inspired me to never touch a hammock, ever
Righto....more tree space for us!!
Thankee. I just don't feel it needs saying. Like "no smoking" on an airplane.Weget it right? Appreciate it Jay.
Love you man. Love it all!
I love watching you camp when I'm stuck in a hotel on a work trip. Or just stressed, and need a little time in the woods with Shug. When I can't be there myself..
Thank you for whatever you "put out".. Love it!
I am the low-rent "Better Help dot.com" Thankee for the goodly words.
i have always enjoyed your sense of humor and personality. some people just have a natural charisma. and i am sure it takes a lot of work to bring that energy whenever you film your videos, but there are some things that not everyone can just do spontaneously. your personality has always come across as genuine and spontaneously fun. it's infectious. i'll always come back and watch your videos, even if they aren't about camping, or hammocks.. i also enjoy music and am always interested in odd hobbies or even just a vlog of someone's day. so yeah, at least for me, there are certain people on youtube, who i always come back to because i just feel a kinship to them, i see something of myself that i relate to in them as a person, i like them as a person and want to keep in touch in some way. so sometimes it's about that person, rather than the topic / content they might produce. even if they didn't have the greatest production quality etc, i'll keep following them because i care. some people just grow on you like that. but of course, your videos are great, well done, entertaining, funny, and informative, and i still enjoy my hammock! i think i'll always enjoy relaxing in a hammock, who wouldn't?! keep on keepin on shug.. long life and good health to ya, whooo buddy!
My tents have gathered dust since 2007. Integrity...I'm honored. I would at least announce my being gone and demise on a video.
Shug, i have been a viewer for years and will continue to be. I appreciate the update and understand your thoughts. I first started following with your unicycle vids and hikes. Just be you, do your thing. You're the man of Sector 7 and always will be. I will watch until you sign off.... Thanks ....
Thankee Jamie. Sold my off road unicycle.....
Thankee for the good and fine words Chris....Whooooo Buddy))))
I'm just here for the Medaglia D'Oro.
Seriously speaking, I probably would never have enjoyed all the wonderful mornings in my hammock without you. I'm not much for having breakfast in the hammock, because I always make a mess. But that feeling when you wake up surrounded by nature - best therapy ever.
Then there are those chilly nights when you wake up in the middle of the night and just have to go. But that's another story.
Greetings from Finland, where we have a lively hammock hiking community - most likely partially thanks to you!
Seriously...I very much appreciate your gift!!!! I've spent time in Finland but never got to camp. Was performing on the VikingLine ships. Helsinki.
I have CZcams premium, no ads. When I found you I was getting into hammocks I thought you were nuts, now I accept you are nuts, in a good way though. I am so happy to hear your voice again. All secure in sector 7!
I just signed up for Premium yesterday. It is so nice. I am nuts. "Too the left" a bit as my UK family says.
Dang you are up early this morning! 😂. Good to hear your voice again
EARLY! Went to bed early. Old man hours....
I've been watching from the start, and I can tell you that I still get excited when I see you have posted a new video. We all need the clowns to make us smile.
Clowns need humans to try and make smile. Soothes our souls....
Hello shug, I have watched your videos for years and they bring me great joy. I am one of those people that watch what ever you put out, you are a creative funny interesting guy. Thank you for all the work you put in your videos. I wish you the best.
Mighty nice of ya'.....
