- This song is a Russian song, I belive originally about Afganistan, however the feeling of the song I felt fits perfectly for anyone worried about going to war. This is NOT a happy song.

Lyrics:
Hello sister, my dear, how are you?
The winter has probably already gone for the year?
The stars are falling over Kiev but it all feels in vein…
But Please just don't tell mom that I'm in Ukraine
The stars are falling over Kiev but it all feels in vein…
But Please just don't tell mom that I'm in Ukraine
It's Saturday now, and it pours, along with the war
Smells like blood here, the battle was hard here, surrounded by gore
I made a bet with my good friend, that he’ll be it back before I
Just don't tell mom that I'm under a foreign sky
I made a bet with my good friend, that he’ll be back before I
Just don't tell mom that I'm under a foreign sky
I send a big hello to my sister, I hope all is well
Please keep writing, your letters are all the calm I have in this hell
And if they ask what I write to you about, well, tell them a lie
Just don't tell mom that I'm in Ukraine to Die
And if they ask what I write to you about, well, tell them a lie
Just don't tell mom that I'm in Ukraine to Die
Hello sister, my dear, how are you?
The winter has probably already gone for the year?
The stars are falling over Kiev and I’m in pain
But Please just don't tell mom that I'm in Ukraine
The stars are falling over Kiev and I’m in pain
But Please just don't tell mom that I'm in Ukraine - Hudba
Thank You For Watching!
The focus on this song was on the meaning and music, so it *may* not be a perfect translation, Hopefully it's still recognizable to Russian speakers though!

Это русская песня
Great song
Love how it's ambiguous as to which nationality the singer is
My intention exactly 😊
@@alderontyran With respect, I don’t think that fits the spirit of the original song.
“Don’t tell mom I’m in afghan/chechnya” is supposed to be about how Russian troops were fighting in completely pointless wars of aggression against highly fanatical enemies in shit conditions- basically
“This war in particular sucks because there’s no point and my asshole government is sending me to die because I’m expendable. Also im probs comitting warcrimes and thats pretty fucked.”
It’s an antiwar song for *Russians* or for any aggressive nation.
By making it ambiguous as to who is singing it/writing the letter (and to a lesser extent writing it in English) it makes it feel like this isn’t a war of aggression from the Russian side and it feels more like a slap against the Ukrainians/allies who are fighting them.
They aren’t “being sent to ukraine to die”- they are there protecting a soverign nation in a war of aggression by a powerful neighbor, and most didn’t have a choice to fight and die in their own country.
Point being is this is painting the war as a human tragedy like WWI instead of a completely unacceptable act of aggression from Russia. Ukraine and its volunteers didn’t ask for this but here we are.
The song is supposed to criticize the Russian givernment, military, and their wars of aggression and I feel as though an ambiguous singer just takes away from that and simplifies it into “war bad”.
@@JA-lr5ix thank you for the respect, to make my opinion on the matter concise: "War is bad"
Regardless of who you are, after you've experienced a warzone as either civilian or combatant, the realization of _how_ bad war is, eventually sets in.
This song is done in English for 2 main reasons:
1. (And most significantly) my Russian pronunciation and ability to read is tragic. All the lines I _do_ use, I've memorized after a long time hearing the song.
2. Simply put, my audience is English speaking. And music is _usually_ better when you can understand it and put yourself in the singer's shoes.
I hope you can understand the reason and find enjoyment in the song.
@@alderontyran it probably won't surprise you to know there's already at least one Russian-language version of "Don't Tell Mom I'm in Ukraine": czcams.com/video/pKeZot4TKXo/video.html
I always interoperated it as them being Russian because of the line don't tell mom I'm under a foreign sky.

@@artyom1264true...
The whole situation is a depressing and meaningless war. It’s hell for anyone involved. War is nothing to be glorified, especially not this one. This vid puts a good message out. I hope for anyone involved that this ends soon. If not it’s a matter of time and if any other countries fight directly before it’s over or gets worse.
War is a killer of youth, created by the old.
I have a close friend who lost a best friend from shelling, he went to Europe to try to get their friends and family out of both Ukraine and Russia. They were denied access In because of paperwork, this was after he had gotten an email from his friends family saying his friend was killed.
He is Russian, his mom and family moved here and then he was born here but has friends there.
So a few folks have asked for a Russian/Ukrainian version of this, but my personal comfortability with both language's and my own pronunciation mean I won't do any more than a verse in either. *but* if anyone want's to take a crack at doing their own version, feel free! The chords are posted here:

There is a russian version of this song on CZcams.
"As the remaining members of our Volunteer Unit come for the home for the 2nd time, We stare at the remaining buildings of kiev, the sounds of gunfire, watching the refuges. " I pray to anybody who came from foreign soil to serve a nation to preserve peace.
It's sad that Eastern Europe remains in a permanent state of war. My Polish relive born in the 20s is watching the whole thing on the news.
That's exactly why my ancestors left Europe behind.
Fantastic cover my friend! When the war started I had a feeling an updated version of this song would make an appearance. I suspect that a similar thing will happen with “swallowing dust”.
When I heard the Russians went into Ukraine, the first thing I said was "Well, I can't wait to hear the war songs from this conflict"
Didn't expect to hear it in English though.
it's a pity that you were more interested in songs than achieving peace in the conflict, but it was almost concluded in March-April 2022
Was waiting for someone to make this, very glad you were the first.
The original song (As far as I know) is actually "Don't Tell Mom I'm in Chechnya", having to do with the Chechen Wars. Ironically, the Chechens are now fighting for Russia in Ukraine.
Fantastic cover, and I've unironically been listening to a lot of Russian war songs.
It was originally about Afghanistan
Chechens are fighting for both sides (but a lot of them are fighting for Russia)
The original song is called: "Please Don't Tell Mom I'm in Afghanistan", It's about Afghan War :)
the afghan came first, then it was readapted for chechnya
Thanks guys for the correction. I didn't know there was an Afghan version.
This just gives the feels from a single conscript saying "War is hell."
You're an incredibly underrated youtuber, I love your music
Bravo! Amazing cover, the emotion you put in into it was absolutely perfect. Really highlights the worthless reality of the war.

Amazing work.
Love the slower rhythm, great job.
For those that don't recognize this song, it was originally "Don't tell Mom I'm in Grozny", in reference to Russia's invasion of Chechnya.
The original song, in Russian, is a "letter" to his sister, pleading in vein for her to reply but to not mention to anyone (least of all their mom) that he is fighting a murderous war that he doesn't believe in.
It is a tragic song of young Russian men sent to die by uncaring politicians, soldiers who don't want to be there but are seeing their friends die for nothing. Now, updated for a new generation of Russian boys that are dying in Ukraine, fighting their cousins. Why? Because Putin said so. Putin envisions himself the next "Peter the Great" and doesn't care how many people die to fill his dream, Russian, Ukrainian or otherwise.
Please sister, don't tell mom I'm in the Ukraine.
It was originally about Kandahar
I mean I think America can 1000% relate. I'm a US combat vet, invaded a few countries for no reason at all.. Good song though, really makes me miss my buddies that died under a foreign sky.
@@iamwhoiam1663 The Russians and Americans have always loved sending their boys to die in foreign wars. I commend your service and express my deepest condolences to you for being sent to a war you had no point in fighting.
actually it first came from afghan-chechnya-now it's ukraine
There's also an older soviet afghan version
Absolutely beautiful.
I heard the original line(stars falling here in khandaghar)meaning is not only mean real star, it means real stars and the rocket strike in night looks like stars falling
I like how it’s in English, like a foreign legion soldier fighting for Ukraine
Song come from don’t tell mum I’m in Afghan then they changed it to Chechnya so it’s meant to be in Russian
@@tomato4lifd420 The English can be intentional to be a different perspective (a foreign fighter from England or the U.S. maybe)
yes, he is fighting for the Nazi government, for the interests of the state, which has no fucking right to interfere in the affairs of Europe, he is fighting for money and glory, and not for peace.

That was f-ing incredible
"however the feeling of the song I felt fits perfectly for anyone worried about going to war"
an english version of this song, very sadly, fits despite originating as a Russian song. The amount of Americans fighting under in Ukraine's sky really hurts me because, these people simply want to help. And knowing that people who are genuine in that reguard is just awful. This song also (for me) highlights how in war, these things are VERY much mutual in both sides. This song has existed in Russian, speaking these exact same words, but now it is the English speakers turn to fight and resonate with these words while Russians do aswell. Both sides are just people fighting for what they think is right (excluding conscripts who I very much sympothise for and wish nothing but the best for). Please pray for every volunteer. But please pray for every soldiers mother who may or may not know that their dear loved son is in Ukraine.
Great video!
As someone whose had five friends whose been killed in the fighting from 2014 to the present day. This hit hard.
I pray for both sides to make it out of this war 🙏
This song is really great and really portrays the emotions the original had!

NOTHING BUT RESPECT... As someone who is on Ukraines side overall I feel nothing but sadness for the ones who got swept up in this who aren't rapists, or butchers, or torturers.

War, war never changes. 😢
Legendary russian war song. Seems like they will make a new version every 10 years. Just hoping this is the last version they make but they probably won't stop until the people realize that they are the aggressors or someone turns the tables on them and they have to defend their homeland. Then they will realize the stuff they fought for was not worth damage they caused. I'm not quite sure what they are fighting for really.
its makes me cry, becos i still waiting enlistment to hoin ILDU. I'm not fear of death, but I affraid life but dying inside
Ah yes, a sequel
A triquel
oh it was just a matter of time, someone will do this version. Its a good one. Can't wait to hear it in Russian.
A civil war that started a decade ago within a nation turn into a civil war between people of related history, faith and blood.
A soldier of whatever the side and whatever the the background they are from will at some point return home if they're lucky but those soldiers aren't actually alive anymore. Sometimes you meet people that granted have a plus but if you ever get to see what's on their face, in their eyes, in their souls... That person is long gone from what they were.
I only wish this to be over and for the start of the healing here. I wish their nightmares to be over and find meaning in their lives and think about taking the final shortcut in life.

Im definitely telling on you
A fictional letter from an Iraq War/Afghan War veteran who volunteered to go to Ukraine to fight
“Dearest Mother
I knew of the risks when I volunteered to come here to Ukraine, I thought it’d be like Iraq or even Afghanistan but here in Bakhmut… it’s nothing like Iraq, instead of an insurgency where fighting an actual army, there’s no frontlines in the city anymore it’s just pockets of fighters who are made to die in this concrete hellscape of rubble and debris and my god… the shelling… Every time I hear it it drives me mad but it’s every single night and it doesn’t stop whatsoever… Do not worry about me though despite what I’ve written I’m doing alright and I’ll be home once this war is over
Love your son”
My proposal of Ukraine's version, where I also include some non-obvious changes (just keep in mind I'm a young Pole and I help myself with paper dictionary, so feel free to propose changes both grammatical and changes of words to better fit it):
So, why in 2nd line "Wyesna ... rasspustila" instead od "Zima ... zamela"? Well, attack happened on 24th of February, so it was hard for new snow to fall on non-white terrain.
In 3rd line I've used Zaporizhia, since it gently fits into 4 syllables.
For the same reason I've used Donbas instead of Ukraine in de facto refrain.
And also that's why we have "Kazatskoy" instead of "Ukrainskoy" in 5th line.
Unfortunately I am very uncomfortable with my pronunciation capabilities for Ukrainian (as it is, *one* verse would be more than I'd be comfortable saying I could to let alone the whole song) and I'd be really embarrassed to butcher the pronunciations so I'll have to recommend someone else does the cover (although I guess I'd be cool playing the guitar for it...)
@@alderontyran It's actually for Russians to sing, that's why it's in Russian, but I guess this doesn't help either.
