  • What I spend in a week as a 23 year old living in New York City. I really enjoyed this video concept and I've already thought about ways I can make my next one better. I hope you enjoy it. xx Lexie
Life costs money, that’s just a fact. However, the great thing about money is you can always make more.

Honestly for the people saying she's "fiscally irresponsible" you have no idea how much she's earning/saving/paying for bills - this is literally just her generalized spending habits throughout a random week. There is so much unnecessary vilifying of people (especially women) who spend anything more than the "bare necessity"
(side note: if she were flaunting her wealth it'd be another issue but I don't feel like that's the intention here)

I love what you had to say, Cristina! And I think it's important to bear in mind that things aren't always as they seem. Not saying this is necessarily the case, but plenty of people seem to be "rich" (whatever that means to the person saying it), when in reality they are facing mountains of debt, or are the recipient of multiple generous gifts, or maybe a scenario I can't think of right now. It was brave of Lexie to honestly share a week of her financial life with us because finances are a private subject for a lot of people (including myself) and putting a video up on the internet like this can incite judgment in others. This is actually the first video of Lexie's that I've ever seen. So I hope this message resonates with anyone who needs it!

Just leaving another comment. I love that you did this and were so honest with yourself and your viewers about it. money can be such a sensitive topic at times and also one that's really tempting to avoid thinking about. I can't even imagine how much money I must spend in a month on coffee to go. Even when I make coffee in the morning (which I do most mornings) I still end up spending on coffee out. I pick up food stuff here and there a lot of the time - meal prep and cooking at home are some of my biggest most consistent challenges. I don't actually buy a lot of extraneous things but sure, things like household stuff are a big part of my spending. Transportation too - I never seem willing to drop a lot of money at once on a monthly metro card even though I know it'll save me in the long run. Things like that. This video is helping me look at myself. I should probably do this...you know...I should probably budget! Big scary word!!! Would you believe I'm 37 and still struggle with this?!?! You're inspiring me. Thank you!

Clearly none of you live in NYC, this is the average spending rate for someone with a disposable income in the city, and when I say “someone with a disposable income in NYC", I mean someone who has extra money from income after bills. I'm in NO way saying this is average for everyone in the city, HOWEVER chances are if you moved to Manhattan for fun / by choice, you have a decent disposable income whether it's from your own income or parents funding. Obviously a lot of students in colleges in the city or people who have grown up in the city know how to not spend as much and have plenty of lil bodegas and local routines that keep them in their budget - but this is not above average for a semi-successful youtuber nor is it above average for someone in the upper middle class living in NYC. $50 for an uber is not unheard of, I’m not sure why all of you are freaking out over the budget I blow through this same amount in a week just living on Long Island. Y’all from Idaho need to take a sec to examine the pay-rate differences between the states before coming on here like she’s insane lmao. She's clearly making this video as a way of tracking her spending and trying to get a better grasp on it / prevent future unnecessary spending - no need to come on here and call her spoiled or try to point out the difference between your income levels! No one asked!

Ok let me say my honest opinion when your young and spending money on having fun and creating experiences for me it’s well worth every penny . That’s what u should be doing don’t let ppl make u feel bad for enjoying life that’s why ppl have mid life crisis their 40s ... u need to enjoy this time in your life Bc u don’t get it back . Of course everything in moderation but me myself personally when it comes to being around my friends and going out I’m all in.... as the end of the day sitting on our death bed it’s the memories we remember not how many houses we bought or how many cars I have ..

Thanks Lexie for the video! definitely interesting to look at home much you spent in a week (it's less easy to keep track now with card payments!), I had the impression that this will show the expenses of a week of living in NYC and I think that's what some of the commenters are complaining about, but clearly it isn't, it's just a random week with random expenses of you doing fun things (which is great!) but it doesn't give an insight on the expenses of living in NYC for those who are looking for such content. Revolut can be quite helpful for those who are trying to keep track!

Discretionary income, for the daily fun stuff, is really hard to come by for many people these days!
You've clearly got a great life, and no shade, but I feel for all those young kids that don't even get to GO to college, let alone bounce around the city buying this and that.......the United States has become very much a place of the HAVE and the HAVE NOTS, in a much bigger way than ever before. And before you guys judge the uber thing, its very difficult to get to places like Manhattan using the subway sometimes (depending on which part of the city you're going). Also the times difference between the two options can be from a 1.5hr train commute or a 20 min uber. Both options suck but if you're running late, weather is bad you just gotta take an uber.

I feel like so many of these comments are so judgey like "You spend *$$$* a day? That's more than my whole months pay-check". But then it's like the people commenting are either 16 or have a super low paying job. I'm 21 and I live in Sydney Australia. Granted I don't have to pay for Uni upfront, we have a much better loan system, but still I can afford this and still save. My parents don't front the bill. I think you would be surprised how many young women grind for it and don't rely on their parents. If you have a job, you can probably afford this lifestyle (not the Uber yikes). There is no need to shame Lexie if you haven't even gotten past high school yet but for some reason think you're an economic professor.

.... There is nothing wrong with having a "super low paying job." Some of us are college students and can't work a full time job so we have to deal with random part time jobs that pay starting $7.25 or less... We could work full time but that is SUPER mentally draining. We don't have a choice :) Not all of us can drop a shit ton of money on clothes that we'll probably never wear or food that we really don't need.

I also in Brooklyn and my spending is comparable ha. Have you looked in to the bus? I started taking it for Brooklyn to Brooklyn transport and it’s a game changer!

    1. When I started watching your videos years ago, I didn't know that I was so close to your age 2. I think that how much you spend really depends on your desire to meal prep and the amount of energy you have to put out. I'm disabled (and currently live in Israel) so I will eat less out. (also a student, so I try to cook almost everything at home)

Oh wow, I feel like I follow a similar lifestyle in London and probably spend around £250-300 max. I visited New York last year and thought they seemed similar in price for stuff but I guess not! So interesting

Even if you have a average salary job in NYC i find this kind of spending still happens. It’s interesting because integration of different types of people combined with the common attitude of eating out (there are ads targeted for eating out like cashback at restuarants or for seamless, on the subway trains where they target particular groups of lifestyle) and the lifestyle of eating out makes a $60 dinner considered good Lol! But i mean its NYC. I find This pattern is mainly of Manhatten and Brooklyn , by the way for anyone curious. And it’s also mainly of the gentrified areas, Most families in the outer bouroughs like The bronx and queens dont spend like this or families of lower income and parts of manhatten as well. However This remains as a particular lifestyle thats popular here in NYC, and Lexie’s lifestyle is obviously unique because of her job. Though Just for anybody who thinks NYC is exposed like this video, it is not. U got all types of lifestyle. Come visit for a year, and u shall see, Lol

I feel your pain. I live in Washington DC. I decided to get a smaller apartment, and live a 2 min walk from the Metro Station. I know it’s way more expensive in New York. So that might not be possible.

You should do a video like answering questions about living in New York City and being a female. Do you feel safe? Do you go places often alone??

As a 23 year old living in Brooklyn, I thought this was super realistic cost-wise and maybe even a little lower than expected for all the different things you did? The only reason I don't spend as much as you do in a week is because a lot of my friends are bartenders/work venues. Thank you for sharing!

Miki N Or maybe she is a self-sufficient student on a hustle. Just because someone is young and lives in NYC doesn’t mean that they are living off of their parents money.

Miki N I was also born an raised in Brooklyn. It all depends on where you want to live at. The neighborhoods make where you live super expensive.
