I was there this year and I really recommend you to visit Hebron and other biblical cities with a guided knowledgeable person. Its so much historical and matching the full history in Bible as it says and believe me you will feel a lot when you are personally there. I hope you will be able to visit one day.

Is there any evidence, other than tradition, that this site is what it claims?

If this tomb is not at the end of a field, then it does not fit the Biblical location for the true tomb.
