Will this be the LAST Nikon DSLR I ever own? Could it be the last PRO Nikon I ever own as well? This is a video that discusses the future of the DSLR as well as calls out what I am personally looking for in a PRO camera at this point.
Will I switch to Sony or Canon? Or will I end up staying right where I am with Nikon because I already have a ton of glass? I guess only time will tell.

UPDATE. I SOLD MY NIKON D5 to Allen's Camera in the middle of July 2018. It was time, it was going to continue to drop in price and I wasn't using it. It was a tough decision and I will miss the build quality and high ISO handling of it....but, I had to make the right business decision. I will be using Z7 and Z6 and Sony a9 where needed.
Jared Polin You mean 2019?
Aouch.... i bought the D5 about a month ago...do you think i made a mistake ? :s a was a lil' bit obsessed by the D5 (as i was obsessed the the D3 before buying it ^^), but now, i watch your videos and i discovered the Z system.... and it's true that it looks really avantageous, to see directly the exposition and the results of other settings, and also, the focus points on the full surface of the sensor, the ftz adapter... i make sports, planes, nature and animal photography... do you think it's better to sale my D5 now or i can keep it for a moment ? and, a lil' question; Z7 or Z6 ? for price/perfs, if i can buy a good lens more, it should be really great ! thank you in advance !
olaf le flibustier I don’t think you made a mistake unless you’re willing to trade it in for a Z 6 or Z 7...
olaf le flibustier You can use Nikon’s new Z trade-in and spend only $199.5 for the Nikon Z 7 if you trade it in body only
@@CarrickWebb Yep, i know the D5 is just a photo monster, but, when i see that Jared sold his D5 for a Z7, i wonder if it's wiser to go on the Z system with FTZ adapter... it would allow me to invest in a good lens ^^' i have the D5 but, for the moment only an old 300mm manual lens and a sigma 70-300mm, and it's a lil' bit frustrating with such a great camera as the D5, or, maybe i'm too hurry ^^'
You finally broke away from your annoying hyper delivery. Now, this is a PRO video from FRO. Kudos!
Boy is that right. I hope he keeps with this grown up feel to his stuff.
Well said, the school boy humor gets annoying really fast. I no longer bother to get notifications on this channel because most of the content is just pitiful attempts at humor.
I highly doubt it, the childishness will continue.
He reduced the coke
@@turnupthewhat4583 LOL
This is the most watchable video of yours to date. I like the more subdued, sensible delivery. Nice one.
I agree, he should do these types of videos more often.
It's because it's mature. I've been watching him for years, and the catering to the 14 year old newbies is getting a bit old. He's evolved before, hopefully he'll do it again.
Agreed. If he produces more content in this style I may resub.
Sooooo what you're saying is that I will need to unload the D4s and the D5 - and prepare for something NEW?! Standing by to see what comes next, I am enjoying the Z6 and Z7 units but am not comfortable with them on fast moving professional situations "yet". I'm with you Jared... married to the glass on the shelf. for now... I always enjoy your videos! Can't wait to see that upcoming Nikon Pro Mirrorless!
Nikon, Canon, Sony, Fuji or Other? What do you use?
Canooon
Canon!
Canon
Pentax!
Canon DSLR
Off topic but I quite like this style of video... much more chilled. Feels a little more personal.
Chris Wilson agreed!
Felt personal, beacuse it was.
It's not only the cameras that evolve, but also you Mr. Fro sir. Keep the videos coming! :)
This is one of the best videos that you have, natural and to the point. Taking your time and not rushed at all, well done!!
the feeling of using an optical viewfinder though, is still different than using the mirrorless, I wouldn't say better, just different. So..wouldn't mind to have a dslr along side
I know what you mean. I love being able to SEE my exposure LIVE through the viewfinder with the mirrorless Z6, but I love the optical viewfinder of a DSLR (my D3s and D500) in regards to focus tracking with action shots and the lower power consumption over all. I guess I'll always have one foot in the door of mirrorless and one in the DSLR realm. Two different tools for different jobs.
I do agree 👍
@@demarcusdavis1257 same haha, even if they are really similar in terms of specs and functions now days, is good to have choices
Very honest video. Even tho I'm a newbie with a d3500 this still puts things in perspective for my future camera upgrades
you are always a bag of information. it is always fun to watch your videos.
i started using canon 77D my first ever camera a few months ago. still having fun learning to use things on it. it will take some time before i get comfortable with cameras but watching your vids does make it more interesting having one in my hand. thanks FRO
Love everything you said . Different kinda vibe from this video. Love it mate !
This was the best video you ever made. I like the toned down speaking. Very nice.
This is what many people don’t understand, I love Canon, because it checks most of the marks for me. But like you said: I have no problem jumping ship if a new camera checks all my marks. Awesome video!
You are so right! Most people don't get it... I have no particular loyalty to any particular camera manufacturer (I have used both Canon and Nikon in the past) as for me it has always been a case of "this is what I want from my camera" and it didn't really matter who made it. I now have all Sony gear because the cameras can take my favourite old lenses and provide the technology and capabilities I want. They are the best cameras I have ever used. This isn't about dumping Canon or Nikon - if they had manufactured what I wanted I would have bought the gear from them, simple as that.
I agree with everything both you and Jared have said.
John Johnson right on mate! Is funny how people get so fanatic over a brand. Yeah, some are better than others in some fields, there is no perfect camera, there is a perfect camera for each person. Cheers mate!
Finally a good no-nonense sensible analogy whilst also sharing a bit of you. Photography is a passion and it was on display here. Nice job.
1M, congratulations! I use the Canon R for CZcams, it ticks off all the boxes I need! I just can't afford the RF lenses.
Great video Fro! Holding on to hope as well! Nikon, are you listening?
Excellent commentary and fairly stated.
Great video, Jared. I felt like we were all sitting around the campfire drinking a beer, listening to you tell a story. Really good, man.
As a long time follower I love your humbleness and humility that you bring to this video. And like I always say whatever floats your boat is what you should choose
waiting on the nikon d760... i think the spec on this (what ever it will be) will be a good indication of how nikons dslr camera's are going to progress over the next few years.
as long as it has on sensor af for video, i might get it. otherwise my z6 is fine
Agree! There is almost no reason anymore to buy a DSLR, especially in the entry level. I switched to Olympus two years ago and I love the smaller form factor and bring my camera with me much more frequently.
Great video. I am at the same crossroads but at a petite level. Just sold my Nikon crop and I had high hopes for z6 but it still seems a7iii is better. Unlike you though, I only have 2 lower end Nikon FF lens. Which would you still choose if you didnt have all the Nikon lens? Thanks
Always appreciative of your honest and thoughtful insight.
Wow... Very inspiring to see this video how you are seeing today cameras as a pro.
"The longer you sit on an older camera, the more value it loses." Words to live by if you're a working professional.
You can’t get sentimental about bodies. You can always buy one back in 10 years for nothing.
did you by a camera to hold its value? or did you buy a camera to take photos? LOL
I haven’t watched you content in a while but this video was just awesome. You’re background story and images really inspired me to stick with it after all these years. Cheers!
I totally agree. I try to use what works best for me within how much I want to spend. I'm not going to take a back step on features unless I'm paying a lot less.
Because of you I went Sony and I never looked back! Thank you for putting out all these videos cause I would have never got to where I’m at today. I’m grateful, thank you.
Great video .... back to your first days , what made you switch from canon to nikon ?
I had an Elan II E with the eye detect AF (where it detects the photographer's eye, not the subjects). I really liked it. Also, I think it had mirror lockup and the only Nikon camera that had mirror lockup at that time was a lot more expensive.
Best down-to-earth conversation that touches on all of my thoughts as a pro-nikon/NPS user. I do love all of your videos, but this feels slightly unique and new (comparatively speaking). You have documented so many great years of work, and thank you for sharing your honest love for the craft. We have lenses as our paintbrushes and camera bodies that represent watercolors and acrylics to oils. Your objectivity and passion is what keeps me tuning in! Awaiting a D6 or mirrorless (to be free of my sound blimp). My colleagues in feature film/unit stills swear by fuji, but I continue to hold out.... D
One of the most thoughtful, insightful, and meaningful videos I have seen. Thanks
If the D6 ends up being a mirrorless, that would have the same game changing effect that the D3 had or greater. A big thing would be it would have to work with standard F-Mount FX lenses
A mirrorless camera can't work with long flange distance mount, that's why every manufacturer introduced new mounts with their new mirrorless lineup
@@yahyalemnouar9751 It's not that mirrorless won't work with large flange distances, it's that without a mirror, that needs room to be flipped up, there is no need for the extra space between the flange and the sensor.
@@BubbaBearsFriend While the camera body could be kept at its current physical size, without the flipping mirror, to keep current lenses. However, this would disrupt the marketing of new lenses designed for the more compact mirrorless bodies. Thankfully, there are adapter mounts that allow the use of my bagful of DSLR lenses.
@@yahyalemnouar9751 Pentax brought out a mirrorless camera with the same mount and flange distance as it's DSLRs a few years back. It wasn't a great success, but that could be down to the unusual design, or the fact it had no EVF. Image quality was good, I understand.
I don’t see why they wouldn’t just make a mirrorless D6 organically with a vertical grip body, and include/offer an adapter to adapt old lenses if desired. That way they could reduce a lot of the weight of the D5 by keeping the main part of the body thin, but also have a solid, full sized grip and the familiar vertical grip body format. No, it doesn’t make the body any less large in overall size, but it does save a lot of weight. I think that especially to the sports photographer who use this body style, that comfort is far more important the compactness, especially since these are usually the people wielding those ultra-tele primes. But taking a lot of the bulk out in one part of the body without affecting the comfortbly not changing the grip would be welcomed, and as I stated would lower the weight, another considerable factor.
I have a canon rebel sl2 lookin forward to going Sony A9 when i save up enough $$
If your problem is money, then why wait to get an A9 when you can get an A7III?
DeusExAstra it doesn’t make sense to spend that kind of money on something that i don’t truly want. Never settle for less
Christopher Allen do you really need the extra features the A9 has or do you just want it because it’s the best? With he price difference between the A7iii and the A9 you could buy a quality lens... just saying 🙂
Wow...you are normally about louder than life videos. This was eloquent, lucid, delivered at a very appealing decibel level and tone. Wow, what you had to say did not compete with how you said it. Good job Jared.....keep it up
I's been watching your content for years, but this one I like most. I can feel the seriousness of the topic and more personal.
You're just in a new level, man. Glad to be following you. Thanks for the video.
Meh, he is ok. He gets a lot of things wrong....
@@robertanastase558 i guess you did not understand my message at all. Theres no right or wrong in my judgement of his video.
I will switch to Sony as soon as my pocket could afford it, but my Nikon lenses investment makes me think it twice!
Just stay with Nikon
You could get a Sony to Nikon adapter and save all your Nikon Lenses.
@@FlareLegacy But not the D lenses
nikon f lenses to sony adapter ain't so fast af. Can't do continuous AF like the FtZfor the nikon Z series. I am stuck with nikon so Z is for me, and don't care to switch. Bodies changes all the time lenses you keep.
@@xophaser Yep, my Canon FD glass ftw!!!
This felt really sincere and I learned a lot about Jared. More of this!
In response to your pinned comment, I use a Nikon D3500. I just have two questions for you, do you print your own photos? If so, what printer do you use?
Digging the chill vibes here on a topic that tends to get people pointlessly all riled up
You want the perfect camera. Goodness....that's almost asking for the impossible from the manufacturers. I never really understood why that is. Thanks for the video Jared. You are one of my favorite teachers, and a giant inspiration for what I do every day. Thank you!
Excellent as usual! Happy Christmas to you and to your family JP
Exactly how I fund gear and tech. Keep all the boxes and manuals. Helps with the resell.

Still happy with the decision?
@@tburbank1 No regret and happy
I think his recent sport comparison of Sony a9 vs. Z7 had an effect. That AF just makes your job so much easier....
Just think doing sports with manual focus , manual cameras .
Whats the best sports camera? For capturing either low-light or bright light movement durring sporting events.
D5
Nice insight, Jared. Thanks for that. I like that laid back style, too.
And I'm excited what we will face in the years to come (DSLM tech..). Till then, I'm sitting here with my D700 :D
I am Canon, but I could have said everything you said.
Unlike most of your other videos, your tone and attitude wasn’t as upbeat as normal. The nostalgia of being on one camera brand for most of your career seems to hit you right in the feels. Hopefully Nikon can give you what you need, but if not the professional in you knows about the right tool for the job regardless of brand. Thanks for sharing a bit of your history with us! I look forward to more of you in the future.
@MLWATKK glass is indeed important and much is to be said about ergonomics and even how pretty a camera is as it may or may not influence how much you actually want to shoot with it.
With all of that being said though, I buy what I want and haven't settled on a brand really. I shoot Canon and Sony. Canon has cheaper high-quality glass, so I just bought a 70-200 Tamron 2.8 g2 (like the one Fro gave away), the nifty 50, and I use the Sigma 35mm 1.4. On the Sony, I utilize the Tamron 28-75 for most of my video work and adapt the Sigma with the MC-11 and use the 90mm 2.8 Sony Macro.
Use what works best for you. For me, that means using two or 3 systems.
love your videos man.. plus starting up and barley being able to afford a new camera sucks but just watching your videos gives me the inspiration to carry on.
How well does the Z6 and Z7 handle longer lenses, such as 500 and 600nm focal length?
I own the a9 since the release in Europe. I never had a cam, which impresses me every time i use it. Sony did such an amazing Job with that Camera. Now i bought the a7iii as a second Body and for the price tag, it also impresses me.
@Freerider I am not a native speaker, so i hope you apologise
This is one of your BEST videos so far... Insight, real needs and real budget minded ...I couldn't have said it better....thanks Jared!!
As others have said, this is really well thought out and made. This I could actually watch regularly. Well done!
Loved the Transparency Jared! Thanks!!!
Been using Nikon for over 40 years, got lots of bucks invested in high dollar glass; hope they come out with something fantastic so I can keep on going. Or am I delusional?
Yep, time to check yourself into the asylum
Recently switched from Nikon (D800) to Sony (A7III).
Tough making those kind of swaps, at least if you include native lenses. I made the jump mostly for the weight savings with the A7ii. My shooting takes me deep into the wilderness where the wild things are. The lighter my setup can be the better, of course without sacrificing quality. I wanted to grab the a7rii, but the lenses made that prohibitive. Next camera body jump for me will be either the a7riv, a7siii/a7siv, a9ii, or possibly an a9rii. My main concerns at the moment are fast autofocus, silent shooting, and pixel count. The other things I would like to see is better dynamic range, and ISO performance.
I think, the hybrid system that you mentioned, will be useful to keep your old lenses. And I think that may be important.
I just want to say, love your videos, this and all of yours and that you were super helpful with your real world reviews on cameras and I finally decided för the A7R iii.
Thanks a ton, hope you make the right choice for you in your next camera choice :)
This is serious 😯😯👀👀 come on Nikon!!!!
Still holding on to my D800. I'm probably going to the Z6 next year.
maybe z7 with the huge price drop, it is a mp camera like the d8xx. With the new af upgrade for my z6, i done some sport and think it is equal to the d750.
@@xophaser my d750 focuses way better in low light even after the update. If the af was on par with my d750 it would be an amazing camera, but being a concert/wedding photographer I cant get rid of my d750 yet.
@@derekpalmer_creativemedia I havent used it in dark scene much, when i did it was fine. the d750 is my second camera to the z6 now. I keep the z6 in auto af, and use touch screen af alot.
Buying into the Z mount is such a bad idea when Sony already has better products and shows that as a company they will advance much faster than Nikon.
I have to agree. This video was very humbling. Tons of experience here. Thank you
Jared,
Your video shows some low light situations with your old digital cameras. What were some of the tricks you used? It appears some of the situations were not tripod friendly. Thanks.
What image differences did you see from the past 20 years?.....exactly. Not much. We all get caught up (me included) in the hype train of a new product. For all those people out there who worry you'll get left behind, you won't. Just keep creating, the best camera you have is the one on you at that time.
Gary Nunn I still shoot with a canon 5D mark ii I bought off eBay for $400 and the image quality is just as beautiful as your modern cameras
You don’t see much difference in image quality in the last 20 years?
I bought the D850 and went through a lot of back and forth wondering if i should have went with the z7.....i think im happy i got the D850 and because i have 3 lenses for it(i only need a 24-70 to complete my collection) i will wait until Nikon tops the z7 and get whatever it is they come out with next....if its good. I do go through days when i wish i had the sony but my budget being what it is im not able to switch systems....im not professional yet but trying to get there, might be a few years yet.
You were the apple of your grandmothers eye. I used to love the episodes you made with her in them. Its one of the reasons I like you as much as I do. You treated her very well Jarod.... she was a wonderful gal.
This was a another quality video. I appreciate you sharing you story.
As a retiree and subscriber this was your best video and you have inspired my photography future. 😎👍🏾😃✌️🏾😁
Well said. I shoot with the a9 and while it's an outstanding camera, it's not perfect. It is, however, A LOT of fun and makes me want to shoot. Hoping C and N will produce something equivalent and thus keep Sony on their toes and prices down. We all win in that case.
@Kevin McClatchey that's a great camera for sure.
@Kevin McClatchey Sonys are more enjoyable to use? okay then
@SwitchRich it may be in their interest to keep making [and hopefully improved] pro style DSLR's like the 1Dx for ALL those long time shooters who are OK with their existing gear. I shoot with MANY guys who use and still love their D5's and 1Dx's. Question is will the newer generation want the old or the new?
@SwitchRich How do C & N deal with that? If at all? One thing I'll say, whether you like em or not, we all need to give Sony a tip of the cap for their vision and innovation. It has clearly driven other brands to step up and we essentially reep the rewards.
I'm considering the A9. Hoping you could tell me about some of the negatives you have encountered please?
I’ve nikon 750 and 800 and also Sony a7s2, i’d like to sell nikons dsrl and buy a73 “ backtoback” the a7s2.
Is it a good idea?
Which one is better full frame sensor most expensive or fully effortly working daily with crop sensor which one better
I shoot aviation, action and in field conditions. Would not trade my D810 and D500 for Z6 and Z7.
I'm on the exact same page as you at the moment. I'm using the Z7 and loving the new novelty of mirrorless, but I'm ready to go to a pro mirrorless system. I can definitely get the job done with the Z7, but Pro features (More Straight Forward AF, Higher Continuous, Proper Grip) would make it more feasible for frequent operation. For my particular job, Nikon taking video seriously has been a godsend reducing my travel bag in half. I'm curious to see how far Nikon wants to push the video in their pro body since they don't have to compete with themselves. Nikon's lack of a previously existing line of video cameras may end up being their most valuable opportunity in the market.
Great commentary. Thanks for sharing. Oh and I currently use Nikon (at the moment ;)
Better to shoot landscape fotography eos 6d mark ii, VS nikon d750??
If Canikon don't come with a beast mirrorless in the 2019 Q4 or latest 2020 Q1 when will be a firework of new cameras for the 2020 Olympic they are DEATH as the few remaining people (me included) who still wait as stuck with lot of glasses, some loyalty and hating the Sony clumsy body will switch to Sony!
Bertrand Van Isterdael Canon and Nikon will release one last flagship DSLR for the olympics and that will be that. CZcams fan boys care about brands, pros stick to what works. At the Monaco f1 this weekend was all canon white glass. This whole death thing for canon and Nikon has been around for years. Pros aren’t as fickle as CZcams subscribers. Not to say I don’t think canon and Nikon need to get a wiggle on, but they’ll be fine.
@@touringband Well pro are not the base of their business...it's more amateur/enthusiast and they provide since few years recycles "new" camera already outdated when arriving on the market! And to be fair Jarod isn't the classic CZcamsr as actually a photographer himself.

Well delivered; as are many of your presentations! This time you inject logical and provocative thoughts. I agree with you we should push the technology as it does tend to push us! Kind regards Peter Bennett (Melbourne, Australia)
Even the old-timers like my uncles are moving to mirrorless so that being said its definitely time to ditch the DSLR like the film days.
Sony cameras need a total revamp on they interface and body general usability. That's is the last step for Sony become the industry leader.
has it changed since the original A7, that was a convoluted menu, took forever to find things ( I sold it last year hardly ever used it). So I just shot it in auto all the time. Otherwise I shoot with mostly nikon and know the menu well.
I hope Sony could implement the Hasselblad UI. It's very intuitive even for smartphone users.
Agree with you, I prefer the feel of my Nikon, but I must admit, I have got used to the Sony and feel quite happy with the design, just hate some of the complexities and the use of SD cards much prefer XQD
Yes, the menus are significantly better on the mk3 models. At least you can create your own custom menus. I hope they bring a firmware update to the a7Rii and add the same custom menus to it too.
Pentax but have been waiting for something like the Sony A7111 or R111 for yrs, I am done waiting now it's only down to the A7111 v R111. Is the extra mp worth it the way PP software is going is the PP software going to make super high mp less important.? Even Sony R111 doesn't do pixel shift as well as Pentax! which can overcome background movement Sony cannot this is a soft/firmware upgrade but will they do it?

Hi Jared.. I'm little bit confused in buying a new gear. I'm looking for all rounder 📷 with 10fps for bird photography. I'm doing research for almost an year to buy the best and suitable one. I'm worrying about many things because of buying the 1st camera. I'm looking for Nikon d500 or canon7d Mark ii. Also Sony a6300, 6400, 6500 Has almost same specifications, which one can I go for? I knew one need at least 300mm lenses for capturing 🐦 and wildlife. There are loads of lenses available on Sigma Tamron which are cheaper and good. But for mirrorless they're manufacturing. But soon it will arrive to the market. So could you please suggest some ideas, which one can I go for? now
Thanks Jared in advance

i think Nikon need a pro level mirrorless with a built in grip that takes the EN-EL18 and shoots like 12-15FPS
I'm waiting for the Sony A7S III or the A9 II to release to move from my Nikon. I've already sold most of my glass. Sony is just so far ahead of their competition that I'm getting tired of beating my head against the wall. Thanks for the trip down your memory lane...
