Abilene Kansas in 1869 (An Eyewitness Account)

- Abilene is famous as the first true Kansas cow-town, and as a rowdy place where famous lawmen, such as Wild Bill Hickok, walked the streets. But what was it like in its early days? How did Abilene become so famous in the wild west? In this video learn about Abilene in 1869, just a couple of years after it was chosen by Joseph McCoy to be a cattle town. An eyewitness wrote an article in 1869 about what Abilene was like, its businesses, the people, the industry and even the nearby prairie dog town. See historic photos, like the famous Drover's Cottage, and the prairie dog town that bemused visitors.

I appreciate this story because it tells the story of life in a couple of towns before Wild Bill Hickock and Wyatt Earp’s Marshall/Sheriffs days. Keep ‘em coming!
We live a 1/2 hour from abilene, it is a great little retirement town, great history, Eisenhower museum, national greyhound museum and of course old abilene town, bar and all. The seeley mansion is magnificent.

Grew up there and lived there 60 years. Retired in FL now. Not a lot of the Abilene of my youth left, but still not a bad little town.

I always enjoy your uploads. Additionally, some sites use AI “narrators.” They mangle the language, particularly proper names, so badly that it becomes a distraction.

Glad you are liking the content! I don't use AI, it's either my voice or voice actors I hire. AI wild west channels have kind of taken over unfortunately, and they can pump out videos in a very short amount of time
