I'm afraid Socrates was at least critic of democracy, at worst opposed to it.
Democracy is Achilles. Achilles is strong, powerful, can take on almost anyone and anything. But he has a soft spot. Demagoguery - his heel. But as it stands, we have no better system than democracy, so we should do our best to defend that Achilles heel. We need to ensure rational discourse through debate against populism and demagoguery.

Trey Cotherman Democracy at the time was another thing, what now we call oligarchy. What Socrate was against is demagoguery that should stand for our democracy. “Should” because Socrate and the ancient Greeks had no Idea of what a constitution was (the first one is the 1787 American one). The criticisms Socrate moved sound just anachronistic today, they may be legit in a country with a poorly written constitution

My 5th grade nephew and I watched this video as research for a school project. He's completely aware of how divided and angry we are based on whether we support trump. My nephew spoke of arguments he's witnessed and broken friendships he's aware of. Our kids, even the very young ones, are watching us, their minds are forming and they're learning how to treat others. I hate to imagine what they run across on the internet and TV. The hateful campaign ads we're bombarded with for months before an election highlight behavior we'd never accept from our children. We're better than this. We're smarter than this. Ultimately, I don't even think it matters which party you're in or who you voted for. We're being manipulated by people in positions of power and influence. That's nothing new but it feels so much worse now, very personal and like we could do some lasting damage. Doesn't matter who occupies the oval office, the middle class continues to disappear with stagnant wages + inflation. One thing doesn't change. Obscene amounts of money continues to be filtered to the wealthiest who for reasons I don't understand can never have enough. I'd be less disgusted if the rules weren't totally skewed in their favor.
disappeTrump cited a state of “national emergency or serious economic conditions affecting the general welfare” to explain why the 2.1 percent pay increase scheduled to take effect in January is “inappropriate.” Trump also nixed a scheduled “locality pay increase,” a yearly paycheck adjustment based on where in America a federal employee is based. “I have determined that for 2019, both across the board pay increases and locality pay increases will be set at zero,” the president wrote.aring for decades while wealthy people have the money & influence to keep an obscene amount of money flowing into their pockets. I recently became aware of very unfair things a past President did while in office. I thought highly of him. Now I think both major parties have been bought by lobbyists and anyone who can give money to their NEXT election. They should worry more about representing the voters who put them in office and less about financing their re-election campaign. It's a real slap in the face. I haven't met a single person who wanted to give control of their personal data to internet service providers so they can sell it. Congress and Trump knew the whole country hated that idea so they did it anyway. WHY? I'll be shocked if anyone can defend that. I'm so sick of almost every single politicians. we should vote them out and start over again. with term limits this time because the longer they're in there the more indebted they become too people other than their constituents.

He said "fake news" because he wanted to be sure his followers would stay dumb! Of course not all news is fake news, just the ones that report the facts or the underground conspiracy channels that are clearly fueled by hate and division (ie Alex Jones). The Reagan Era coined it "liberal media" app you would distrust it but the Trump Era called it "fakes news" so you wouldnt even hear the truth no matter how factual it was because truth is the enemy. This distrust of our news sources is just a way to play you against your own best interests.

the problem with democracy in the modern world is that the average person refuses to be burdened with the task of self-education. Instead, they seek quick, easy means of gathering an idea that sounds good enough to feel like it gives them a good chance of standing their ground in a conversation, knowing that if all else fails, they will demand respect that they feel entitled to for being a member of the human race, regardless of how little time or effort they put into gathering their idea.
The quick, easy means of gathering an idea that people like this use is generally their favorite news station. Those TV shows are chock-full of would-be experts, passionate commentators, and self-righteous spokespeople who usually need to do little more than flash a bar graph and a headline to hook their audience on an idea. Their followers, full of passion and foolhardy, run to their social gatherings and events, armed with whatever sentences the nice person on TV told them to believe.
These events include the ballot box.
People vote based on an idea they spent almost no time or effort to form, most often copied from someone on TV or a similar venue, effectively giving the people who manage those venues extra votes in the form of their near-mindless constituents.
So democracy nowadays is less about allowing for the mass population to have a voice, and more about companies being the first person to the eardrum of the lazy.

thata all true.. but the problem is that The US does not have a real democracy anymore since ww2. It does not matter who is elected if you have only 2 choices and both are financed by the same corporations. In a democracy the governement is acting in the interest of the people, not the one of the arms and oil industrie. its hardly in the peoples interest to be at war with someone on average 95% of their life.

When a state becomes too big it becomes impossible for people to have a fair say in it.
If the state is the size of your neighborhood then you'd know the person you elected as a representative, and hold them personal accountable for their promises or breaking thereof, like you would any other person you hire.
If the state was the size of your neighborhood you'd see the mechanics of how things get implemented, how funding is spent, and you'd hold people accountable of their promises.
If the state were the size of your neighborhood you'd see the effects of elected policies much clearer, and it might be easier relocating if you couldn't get along with policies.
Democracy is not necessarily a bad idea, but it is majority rulership, and it requires an enlightened and engaging populous to work fairly.

The title 'Democracy vs. Demagogue' is misleading. It makes it seem as if they are two different things when in fact they are not. @0:15 The narrator says, "In U.S. Democracy...". This isn't a democracy. The Supreme Law of the Land, at Article IV Section 4, guarantees each state a Republican form of government. The people who founded this country were vehemently opposed to 'democracy', and for good reason.
    Democracy:
A government of the masses. Authority derived through mass meeting or any other form of "direct" expression. Results in mobocracy. Attitude toward property is communistic--negating property rights. Attitude toward law is that the will of the majority shall regulate, whether it be based upon deliberation or governed by passion, prejudice, agitation, discontent, anarchy, censorship, and impulse, without restraint or regard to consequences. Results in demagogism, license.
Edit: And instead of drawing a picture that looks oddly similar to Trump, he can just as easily draw a picture that looks like Biden who is currently running the place into the ground 6 years after this video was posted.

2:40 the problem is that most of the people are unable to do thise things. Democracy as a birthright is a failure and funny enough it was pointed out from the moment of it's inception in the ancient greece. Thousands of years later it is shown democracy is a failure because it gives everyone the power of the vote.
Let me put you in perspective.
You work at a company (majority of people at a private owned company). A new manager needs to be hired (ceo, department manager, etc, top leading position in that company). How does the company hire a new manager?
    A. Ask all employees about the candidates that have presented themselves?
    B. A few skilled people test and select the best candidate based on their skill, trackrecord and potential
    ...
Would you trust your colleague at work with your future? As in hand them kver your money and trust they will do with your money what is in your best interest? Real life question. Look around and give the reply to yourself. Walking down the street would you give all your money to anyone and trust they will take care od you?
Do this for the next month salary. Practical experiment.
Go in the street and give all the money to any random stranger and tell them they can have that money as long as they can take care of your best interest, no accountability, no nothing. You have no idea who they are so they can go free and do whatever, even take that money and never see or hear each other again.
This is democracy. Giving all that money to anyone, without knowing their abilities and skill or even their moral compass.
This is thousands of years of stupid.
The better minority being forced into the slaughter house by the billions of sheep, their voices suffocated by the tsunami of imbecicles screaming their "birth rights", the victims of democracy and their elected demogogues.

Mike Brandon Unfortunately none of the alternatives are much better - there aren’t many philosopher kings to be had. In any case even philosopher kings are prone to be corrupted by power over time. A republic with a constitution is perhaps the best approach to protecting the people from their own foolishness and stupidity. It would also make sense to have some filtering process placed on candidates by political parties - it’s far too easy for billionaires and reality tv stars to run for office. We also might want to consider forming citizen panels and charge them with researching major issues and making policy suggestions in an informed and deliberative manner - kind of like option B in your example.

Except the 1933 autobahn was little but propaganda.
No German ever wanted to be forced to work on the autobahn, as it offered incredibly shoddy pay and backbreaking work. And the Allied bombing did not help either. The propaganda films about the autobahn had also been shown to foreigners to try and impress the world, in the process turning it into a target.
Sure, Germany at the time promised labor for everyone with the autobahn. But it was no more rewarding than seasonal berry picking in Siberia.
It wasn't before the 1950s that the autobahns began to be properly repaired and construction continued.
And it took all the way until the 1980s before it was available for public use.
And it was only five years ago that the entire project was finished, with several major changes made for efficiency.
In reality, the autobahn was little more than a monkey's paw wish for the promises made by the Nazi government.
