I actually live in a rain forest on the Oregon Coast. We have possums, chipmunks, squirrels, quail, rabbits, martens, skunks, an assortment of ground rodents, hawks, owls, turkey vultures, eagles, deer, elk, little garden type snakes, rock doves, Steller's jays, humming birds, grouse, salamanders, wild turkey, bob cats, cougars, and black bears -- and that's just on my property and I'm sure I'm probably forgetting some.

Yeah, there's actually many castles or castle-like structures around the country. Many are near or on rivers as kind of a fortress thing from the early colonial days.
And speaking of forts, there's lots of those as well, which also date back to the French-Indian War, the Revolution, and the Civil War. Many of those forts are along coastal water ways or rivers too. They were often used as way to guard emtrances to inland bays or rivers. They were also used as Troop Training bases and POW Prisons back in the Civil War times.

I haven't been to these. I did grow up in Northern California in the redwood forests from birth to about 11 years old. Then in the Ozark mountains from 12 to 20 years. Spent most of my adult life in the deserts of Nevada. Each has its own beauty, bit I confess that I miss the grass and trees.

The natural diversity and beauty of America is unmatched anywhere in the world. There are of course places of tremendous natural beauty outside of America and ones also that are unique and not found in America but in terms of the totality of any nation America is #1.

@@burnout_2017 which is consistent with what i already said. there are lots of nations teeming with natural beauty, but i think all of them are bested by America. just think of it this way. in terms of square mileage, China is a little bit smaller than America and Russia is a little bigger. Russia appears enormous but in reality it's not THAT much bigger than the U.S. because on a global map, the farther a land mass is from the equator, the larger it appears so in reality if you superimpose Russia over America (including Alaska), it's not enormous relative to the U.S. Regardless, consider the incredible biodiversity of America and then tell me if you really want to assert that China or Russia has as much or more diversity than that. America is renowned for its biodiversity and wide variety of landscapes.

@@marksmith4892 ill stand by my comment....i said nothing about bio-diversity, i said landscapes. I also said nothing about russia, that country gets very, very little of my brain space, but gets the majority of my disdain. China is an extremely beautiful country also, i did not imply its better or worse. I just said don't short-change it. As an American, i am quite aware of the beauty and bio-diversity of this country/continent, i have seen much of it in my 60 years. I have also visited China and find it extremely beautiful.

@@burnout_2017 we're only talking about nature not the political systems of these countries. you'll find no one more strident in his opposition to communism than me but that's beside the point. the reason i considered russia and china is that they are the other two in the top 3 largest countries by land mass ignoring canada but the vast majority of canada is just tundra and arctic. anyway like i acknowledged in my original post, there are lots of countries teeming with natural beauty and diversity so i never short-changed any country from the start. if landscapes only were considered and nothing else maybe china could give america a run for the money. based on the video compilations i've seen of both countries they seem pretty evenly matched on that single count.

In the 1960's when I was 12-15 my family lived in New Mexico, about 4 hours from White Sands. It's now a national park, but it's completely surrounded by the huge White Sands Missile Base, where the US tests missiles. In one area of the missile base is the Trinity Bomb test site where the first atomic bomb was tested. The US military allows a limited number of cars into the Trinity site two days a year, and we went there back in the 60's, when you could still pick up radioactive bits of green glass made from the sand being melted by the blast. There are times you can't get into White Sands National Park because they are doing a missile test. We visited White Sands several times and we kids loved sliding down the dunes. I'm sure my mother wasn't thrilled about us ending up with sand everywhere.

Rainforests have HUGE trees and very little light because of the tree canopies. Rainforests generally don't have much undergrowth or brush because of the low light whereas jungles are denser on the ground floor with undergrowth.

That Castello di Amorosa is in the wine country just north of San Francisco. It is made up of a number of counties with different climatological regions or terroirs (Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino) that grow some of the best gapes and make some of the best wines in the world (they win competitions in France). The oldest vines were planted by Spanish explorers because the area reminded them of Spain and the climate is considered "Mediterranean" in that it has hot summers, mild winters and gets almost no rain from May to October but then the winters can be quite wet. One difference in the local wines and their European counterparts is that European wines are mostly blends developed over many centuries whereas their California equivalents are mostly made from a single grape variety--the predominant one in the European blend--and are labeled not by region ("Burgundy") but by variety ("Pinot Noir"). Actually, there are a number of wine estates in these counties, especially Napa, that resemble something in Italy or Spain and many of them are owned by wealthy gentleman farmers or used as country estates.

White Sands is or was the location of an alternate landing site for the Space Shuttle. The shuttle did land there two or three times if I remember correctly. There's obviously a runway there.

The difference between rainforests and jungles is that rainforests have thicker canopies and taller trees. Jungles have more light and denser undergrowth. Also, what most people think of when they hear the word "rainforest" is tropical rainforests. The Hoh Rainforest is...not tropical. It's chilly and very damp. Also, completely unreal looking--Tolkienesque.

The town of Bluff Utah has a whole community of people online saying Bluff Utah is all a big glitch in the matrix. LOL I have lived near that town my entire life and think it's hilarious. Also The Great Sand Dunes in Colorado are the best for sledding down. Nearly 1k feet of very steep dunes. You get going like 80mph in a good saucer sled. White Sands is pretty and the sand is nice but not as fun as the Great Sand Dunes National Park. OMG the Bisti Badlands I didn't even expect to see that! Great fun too. Keep Bisti secret keep it safe. Bis-Tie BTW= Bisti Badlands it's an old volcano. Or at least Angel Peak at the center is. They say the peak looks like an angel, but I think it looks more like the rear end of a 57 Buick.

Castello di Amoroso is an AMAZING place. The wine is quite good as well. It kind of pricey for an entrance fee and you do have to pay for the tasting. So worth it though! It’s actually close to Calistoga. The whole valley is gorgeous and neighboring Sonoma county is just as gorgeous. There is no shortage of views beautiful wines and great food. Come for a visit! Oh and on another note, Sedona….oh wow, Sedona is beyond incredible. The light throughout the day from sunrise to sunset changes dramatically and it is something to see. Not to mention it’s a very powerful part of the world, loads of vortexes and you can literally feel the energy in the air, at least I did. Anyway those are two very different and incredible places to see as well as the keys. Id recommend at least 4-5 days each location, if you’re trying to tour the US. Anyhoo my two cents. Enjoy!❤

You should see the Everglades as it’s crazy. One tiny spark can easily cause a monster fire that travels underground without anyone knowing until the flames are right on top of you. It’s because the ground is full of peat and it’s very difficult to figure out where the fire will go during the summer or if some moron decides to not follow the rules like carrying a road flare or having a open flame. Those are forbidden in the Everglades unless in a specific location where there is no peat. It’s about controlling fire risk.

I'm from Illinois, raised in California, Lived in Texas (Houston & San Marcos), and have driven to Vancouver From Los Angeles. Seen most of the East Coast. And drove from New Jersey to Houston. If You visit The U.S. Come to California, I believe California blows away any state when it comes to diversity in almost every way. Los Angeles County alone- Beautiful Beaches, Coastal Mountains, Pine Forest, Desert, Multiple Valleys with different climates, And an actual freaking island!!!- is more diverse than most countries. Everyone tries to portray California like it's all skid row... Yes, there are problems, but mile per mile I would put California against any COUNTRY let alone any state. Texas weather is absolutely horrible & everything sticks to your body. Live there for years not one single day of dry weather!!! Whereas in Los Angeles, I woke up earlier in the year for about 100 days straight to perfect weather!!!! About (70-83 degrees/ 21- 29 Celsius) low humidity. Trigger Warning: NOT EVERYTHING in Texas is bigger!!! Not a brag or a put-down, just plain facts!!! Sequoia National Park contains the largest living tree. Its trunk is (102 feet/ 31meters) in circumference, Redwood Redwood State & National Park contains The Tallest tree in the world (380ft/115Meters), Inyo National Forest contains The Oldest Tree in the World at 4'855 years old, Yosemite National Parks contains North America's Tallest Waterfalls, dropping (4,425 Feet/739 Meters), and El Capitan - at more than (3,000 ft/914 meters high and (1 mile/1.6 kilometers) wide is the tallest exposed vertical face of granite on Earth, Death Valley is The hottest place on Earth (130 Fahrenheit/54 Celsius) and Lowest point in the US at ( 282 feet/ 85 meters) below Sea level. And only (107 miles/ 172 kilometers) away to the West is Mount Whitney (14,505 feet/4,421 meters) the highest point in the contiguous U.S. States. California contains the Most National Parks (9), California contains The Most State Parks (280), and California contains the most National Monuments - Lowly tie with Arizona - at (18). Hollywood Bowl is the world’s largest outdoor amphitheater..... Do you like fishing?????? The diversity of California's Blue Ribbon Waters- Hot Creek, Hat Creek, Walker, Truckee, Yuba, Pit, Fall, McCloud, Upper Sacramento, Lower Sacramento, and Trinity Rivers- Is arguably unmatched in the US, if not The World. The Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta has (1,100 miles/1,770 Kilometers) of rivers and contains White Sturgeon - The largest Freshwater Fish in North America - (Average Size: 79 Inches/200cm), The San Francisco Bay Watershed covers more than (75,000 square miles/194,000 square kilometers) including the largest estuary on The West Coast of North and South America. Lake Tahoe is The largest alpine lake in North America. Most California Rivers are very clear to crystal clear. California Coast is (840 miles/1351 kilometers) of some of the world's most beautiful beaches and rugged coastline including Giant Wave Surf Spot MAVERICKS!!!!
History, Museums, Points of Interest: California Missions, Hearst Castle, LA Arboretum, Descanso Garden, Getty Museum, Getty Villa, Norton Simon, The Broad, La Brea Tar Pits, The Exploratorium in San Francisco (Best Museum EVER!!!!
