It’s nice to hear someone discussing the topic from “real world” perspective. Some koi people even frown on having plants or anything in the pond.

Brilliant. Brilliant. Brilliant. I was about to give up and fill in my 25 year old pond because all the "so called" professional advice I was getting had left me confused and befuddled as to what was the best thing to do to revive the pond and care for it. I have learnt more in one day listening to you and your understanding what pond keeping is all about than I have in months of trying to get the right help and advice from countless other "pondmen." I appreciate all you have to say and the simple, clear, understandable way that you say it. I only wished that I lived near to you. You would have my business and gratitude all the time. As it is you have motivated me to get out there and get on with it knowing now the best way to do so. Thank you so very much for the help I was so desperately needed.

Definitely go with the advice in this video as it's spot on. Ive just discovered this channel and its great.i couldnt agree more with advice in the video, took me many years to understand what my pond needed and how to get the best from it.whilst keeping it as simple as possible. You have probably met a few koi pond dealers/pond guys. For me there's a big difference in a dedicated koi pond(tank basically) and your average garden koi pond. Most of these koi ponds dont feature plants, gravel or are in sunlight, they'll be no leaf debris etc etc. They focus mainly on the amount of big koi being kept. But your average garden pond is there 1st and foremost because its a nice feature in the garden, its relaxing to sit around and then of course the nature it attracts, then fish.most of our ponds will have plants in or around it,be in sun and have gravel bottoms perhaps. The pondman is right,if you start with a big clean ie empty it pressure wash it down clean everything well, replace filter sponges etc uv bulbs every year you won't go wrong. New oxygenators every season aswell help. I do 1 full draindown every April, clean it all and replace all necessary bits and it works well,it's in full sun and have 13 decent sized koi and it's on a pretty simple filter. Oase 10000 biopress,I have put 2 uvs in system as its full sun, that's another tip if struggling with algae

Most of what you say in this one is basically what ive learmed over last 10 years about filters and there maintenence. Once youve sussed your system out then they require very little maintenence. Keep up the good work

Very nicely explained, sometimes it's what you don't do that makes the difference. You can be too clean, especially with nature. I enjoy seeing how fish live in the wild and I am always amazed how they thrive in difficult conditions.

The drum filter is the most effective, given that it does not need to be cleaned. It has automatic smart cleaning, and good filters have emergency systems and a system that can work without electricity for several hours; when electricity is supplied, the filter turns on and continues its work without any problems.

Hi to you both , I have now cancelled all my koi channels and have just left yours because it makes so much sense . Just out of curiosity back when I kept koi , my biggest bugbear was fish lice . When you do these major cleanups , do you find any major problems with the fish found that have been left to their own devices ? Thanks again for your time to put these how to videos on CZcams . Best wishes and kind regards as always. 😀👍👍👍

Wetland aka bog filters are fantastic - I built one for my "test pond", and it's done such a good job that I'm currently putting together a much bigger one in a second-hand food-grade IBC shipping container for my main pond; this will give me just under 30% of my pond water volume as filter volume. All up it'll cost me about NZD$500 including a pump for it
The Ozponds YT channel is great for anyone interested in this method of filtration

I have an homemade gravel and foam filter made out of a coldwater header/storage tank, it is not working at the moment because I am sorting out a pump. But I have never cleaned it out, I can guarantee if I put on a new pump, the pond would clear within two weeks and be crystal clear. And I have not even lifted the lid on the filter in years.

My pond is close to 90,000L, how do i double my filtration system. Wetland bog system calls for 30% - 40% (bigger is better) and i dont have the space to go bigger.
Need some solid advice? Bakki shower, upflow filter, bog? (My pond is inground so gravity is out of the question).
How many time should i cycle the pond per day? People say 30min, 1 hr, once every two hours, 3 times.a day?.
In my case 90kL cycle every hour will require a beast of a filter. I am happy to cycle 4 -6 time a day thats 22.500L.

The algae is nature’s filter. It consumes the ammonia that the filters usually take away. I run nature aquariums with plants as filters and ponds with bog filters. I’m a fish shops worst nightmare. Our oldest goldfish is 15.
