    After probably 15 years and countless lessons on my short game, I've finally found an explanation on the set up and movement which makes sense to my often scrambled mind! I have just been in the garden and hit 66 consecutive chips without fatting or thinning a single one - the shots which have plagued me. For the first time I can remember I am actually looking forward to getting back on the course and facing my first chip!! Mike - big thanks.

    I doubt that Mike might read this comment, but I was chipping yesterday (prior to watching this video). I decided to chip some using my putting stroke with various wedges. Here is where it gets interesting. I putt crosshanded, and used that same setup for chipping with a putting grip. Guess what? Hit just about all of them great. You know why? That grip LOWERS the left shoulder, and RAISES the right shoulder, making them much more level. Wow is all I can say.

    Interesting how when we sometimes, sometimes in the presence of an experienced, teacher like Mike. Something happens where we can’t stop talking,trying to express everything we know, have heard or believe to be true. I have learned NOT to be that guy . To myself I say “ QUITE “ you are here , now trying to learn . Relax, accept that you may not catch onto the technique straight away. It’s why your here. Consider, someone like Mike to be experienced enough to have already seen your short comings.And has invested time , in trying to introduce an improvement. Which is why you showed up for the lesson to begin with. Given a moment Mike can explain the process and explain it in a manner that will most likely allow you to pick up on the possibility of why a change may work. Perhaps even more important is someone as experienced as he is will clarifying why your swing is producing less that acceptable results.

    I believe the right arm radius is another factor to add if it extends/ lengthens you bottom out early despite good forward set up and swing. If you keep the same bend in the right elbow and height I think it’s another key.

    • @mpsymonds1
      @mpsymonds1 Před 2 lety

      Everyone is thinking that. Maybe Jack isn’t a great teacher. Maybe the son, father coaching thing doesn’t work. His dad, maybe the best to ever play the game, had a certain quirky style. Maybe the son wasn’t really into golf in that way because it’s intriguing to me why he’s taken so long to get coached on chipping. He must have had the opportunity to be coached by the very best. This Malaska guy has a great way of teaching, even I can understand.

    Although he is aware of it, at no time during this 12 minute video does Malaska state Jack Jr.'s obvious problem. HE'S NOT ROTATING HIS UPPER TORSO! It's painful to watch. If Jack Jr. was rotating his chest, his brain would not feel the need to hinge/flip/jab at the ball. The arms and wrists have no choice but "crash" once the chest stops rotating.

  • @scoutmonkeys

    Wow, been wondering when did I start grounding my chipping? Used to chip really good but been having this problem lately and can't figure out why since I feel I don't really change my swing, which most likely wrong thinking. No problem when you hit a higher/longer shot, but frequent miss on short chip, definitely when under pressure...thank you!

    Jack Jr looks to be extremely right hand dominant, which requires precise timing, no bueno under pressure. Unfortunately the technique Mike is demonstrating is fundamentally controlled by the left hand. Man this armchair golf coach business is easy! (I am being facetious here) In Mike's defense, there is utter chaos in Jr's technique and Mr Malaska is VERY good at what he does.

    KEEP SHAFT LEANING FORWARD IN THE FORWARD SWING!!!
    You can make a LOT of mistakes with chipping, but if you keep the lean in the shaft, you will be fine. I went from absolutely the worst chipper on the course to one of the best or at least viewed as a decent chipper.

    I know this videos are a few years old, but after lessons after lessons, I also did a set at golf tec,
    My question is always been, I need visual I need to see.
    They all look at my clubs, and see the worn out spot on the middle of the club, and say the same thing, you are hitting it in the middles.
    Granted, I have always had a crazy eyes and hands co ordination, but I don’t know when the ball gets hits, at one point I was told that probably close my eyes, and nothing is wrong with me.
    I went back and look at so many very old teaching videos, last six months I really got into mr. bob toki, I can mimic it, still I can’t see the ball, and I used the sticks on the ground as I have been instructed too, for the last two years, I know I have set up correctly, the club is on my foot line, my shoulders and eyes over the ball, I will hit 500 balls, still playing bad,.
    Then, searching I came upon the video, On how you should approach the ball, I set up the 3 sticks on the ground, and my natural draw came back, I can see the ball, at all times.
    My brain also realize, the if my eyes are over the ball, there is no way I can see it, once is activated it.
    I play twice my score went down to 73, I play the copperhead yesterday I shot an 84 no mulligans, second time out with this new visual, I am very very excited.
    Quick note;
    Why do teaching pros, tell you to put your eyes and shoulders over the ball? When I look back and make sense of it, it makes no sense at all.
    Anyways thanks..

Aside from that, hinge in a chip should be minimal and the clubhead really more less stays low or under the waist.. this is more like a flop, lob or greenside pitch.. meanwhile the "circle", right shoulder high/level and one leg drill & hit 3" back seems ones to try & understand.. thanks..

      Completely agree, best way to learn to pitch and chop consistently is learning to take the hinge OUT of the golf swing. Used to shoot mid 80s and now rarely have a round where I’m not in the 70’s. Keep your weight forward, shoulders even, and swing the club the same distance back and forward without any force. Learning to do this will drastically improve your short game with minimal practice. Learn to chip and pitch like stricker.

    Why does everyone make the short game so difficult? STOP HINGING YOUR WRISTS. Best way to dramatically cut strokes off your game is to learn to pitch and chip like Steve stricker. Went from shooting in the 80s to shooting in the 70s nearly every round. Simplify the swing, stop adding unnecessary steps to give yourself an inconsistent strike.

    Jacks Son OMG I can’t believe he is related to any golfer. He doesn’t listen and seems to have no ability. Is this a spoof?

    Apparently Jack did not spend much time with Jr on the range. At least now he has a great instructor. Jr needs to freeze his wrists, he is scooping too much.
