- Earlier this spring I spent the afternoon with Eric Cogorno ( / ericcogornogolf ) at Superstition Mountain. We covered a series of topics. This conversation about hip movement in the full swing is one of the most important concepts I think every golfer must understand.
You can see more great videos from this series with Eric on his channel as well.

Don't just play golf. Understand it. - Sport
I love how Eric pays total attention. I hope that he carries on this teaching. It will help thousands of people.
When you golf at a high level, you become a new type of human being.
I'd have to say golf is the best game for anyone looking to learn about life.
Can you do it? Most can't. I can. I bust my ass off researching, hitting thousands of balls. I will always have callous on my fingers because of that and guitar.
I can't remember the last time I got angry at someone. I literally have a positive perspective about anything I do, regardless of the first perspective.
I've been playing golf for 20 years and I am a 8.9 Handicap. I have watched hundreds of instructional videos -- this right here is the best lesson I've ever seen. The axle turns the wheel, the wheel doesn't turn the axle. Great Job!
Thanks for having us, Mike! Really fun day!! Appreciate ya!
Nice work, Eric. Nice work.
You're the best student Eric. Respectful, open and ready to listen. Awesome. 👍
You both have great instructional videos. Thanks!
You were already a very good teacher, Eric. But this was perhaps exactly, what you needed yourself, to become a great teacher like Mike!
Eric
How did you feel this helped you. You are doing a great job with your site. Thanks for having me on the show.
It never hurt anyone to see all the ways to present the fundamentals.
I can't believe it! Only 44 likes? Mike will show you how to play. If you are not doing what Mike says, you're not golfing. It is that simple. This is an ohhhhhhh yahhhh video!!!
4:30 - 6:15 is pure gold. Thank you so much Mr Malaska for sharing your wisdom!
Been pushing strait up instead of moving the hip back.
l had been pinched watching your channel Mike and thank you. It had been an eye-opener!
This video is Golf Gold, I teach golf and this explains brilliantly how the hips work, well done Mike Malaska 2 thumbs up
I have really enjoyed working with Erick. He is very open and willing to listen and try what you are talking about. He is also very educated relative golf swings and the different ways to make a swing. What we talked about just gave him a new way to accomplish what he knew had to happen.
@@MalaskaGolf Golf instruction has really come along since when I started playing 35 yrs ago, thank God LOL. you keep it simple and accurate both are key, well done to you both.
Birdman
Gentlemen, you have just clearly explained so much with this one video. I have watched this the times in a row. I will watch it again and again. Also, thank you for clearing up several misconceptions.
I have to agree with Andrew and a lot of the comments that this thought that leads to the action of pulling your left hip back and out of the way is golf gold. When I practice this with a half swing, I am getting almost the same distance as my old full swing. Thank you so much for this video Mike and Eric!
Mike's "Snapping the Towel" is a great visual and feel cue! I'm noticing a huge difference with the Driver.
Mr. Malaska says he's not that smart but I disagree. His teaching on hip motion is pure genus. He clarifies things so succinctly it's pure genus!
Thanks guys, there is more 'meat' in this lesson than any I've come across. Had to pause it many times, chew it over, take notes & try moves, but totally worth it! Cleared away a lot of stinkin thinkin... Thanks.
Mr Malaska, I’m from the other end of the world from where you are but by GOD grace your wisdom in this game reaches me at the comfort of my home. I cant thank you enough for sharing your knowledge and experience in this game that unfold the mystery of the relationship between our mind and body. You have no idea how much better I am as a player now after watching your videos though I been playing for more than 20 years. You are the only teacher of this game on you tube that teaches with true HONESTY to make people enjoy this game the way they should i.e play the game and not the swing. What you share in this video here works like magic its incredible. I pray to have the means so I can look at you in the eyes and say Thank You Mr. Malaska.....
revelations on the golf swing movements. Thank you and cheers.
Literally walked off the course Sunday after 9. Was very upset and started watching CZcams golf videos. Then I came across this one. Tried this on the course and shot 77 from our tips.A net 5 under based on my current index. Thank you for this gem Mike!
BOOM this is magic! EVERY GOLFER NEEDS TO WATCH THIS VIDEO!! I watch A LOT of CZcams golf instruction videos and this is the one I've been looking for! Thanks for the awesome content!
Love when Mike gets quiet when talking...I lean in and learn...thanks for the great co-video.
The best lesson I’ve ever been thought. Thank you Mr. Mike.
Remarkable video. Mike's explanation of how we don't really see a golf swing struck a memory gong in my brain: 1973. The great Sam Snead is warming up for thirty minutes right in front of me on the practice tee of the US Open at Oakmont. And the thing that strikes me is how definitive each segment of his swing is. I had never seen this before nor since. A series of inner moves that makes the whole thing work. He repeats the same slow guided action on each and every swing, the same measured timing on each and every move. It is just not something you can really see in old videos. But today, Mike shows us how to make one such move in such an eloquent, beautiful way that I'm already on my condo deck training my left leg how to turn the left hip back. Like Eric said, it makes six other things work better. So grateful to Eric and Mike for your wisdom and generosity. Deepest appreciation.
Absolute gold Mike and Eric. Mike, I wish I would've found you when i started this great game. I've so abused my body trying to emulate what I see the pros do. Your concepts are light years ahead of your peers. Jack picked the perfect guy to run his academies. Thank you for posting!
Another absolute gem! This one should go into some kind of golf knowledge museum. Great stuff Mike!
I saw the Cogorno segment on his channel but this extended version really gives me some insights into how you are creating and managing momentum!
There we go!!! Off to the range to fix my life long problem of forward extension!! Thank you Mike
One of the best hip movement explanations I've ever seen. Thanks!
This is the best golf advice I've ever heard in my life! ❤❤❤👏👏👏
Best video I've ever seen that explains that never ending quest for proper hip movement in the downswing.
This is BRILLIANT never had it explained like that , thankyou 👍
Another great video Mike thank you very much.Love your Chanel and your Philosophy of how to swing the club and correct way of body rotation.
Fantastic video . Thanks Mike you describe the swing in such a logical manner.
Amazing. You covered every single thing I do wrong in my swing
What a great video. Thanks to Mike and Eric for putting it out for all to understand proper hip movement!
TO THE RANGE!!!.............. Love you channel Mike
One of many brilliant videos by Mike Malaska
Wow. I have been following you on CZcams for quite sometime now. This one is like the spark of enlightenment. Kind of reminding me of Sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30 . Thank you Mike.
Gold! Thank you Mike! This is just pure GOLD! Clear explanation of how to correctly power the swing. Thank you so much much for the info you provide. You have helped me so much. Sincere thanks.
Mike, your explanations are very clever and clear. Thanks a lot from France.
I’ve never thought of it this way, or been taught this way. It makes so much sense. Really looking forward to practicing this. Many Thanks.
I have never had this concept more clearly and simply explained before. Thank you.
Thank you Mike ... This is possibly the best-golfing video I have ever watched and please believe me at age 67 I have watched a few... Thanks again ... As I type I am trying to put this on my phone so I can take it with me to the range. Here in the UK we have just received the message we can start playing again on the 13th ... Stay safe everyone
mike, what you're doing is gold. thank you for sharing your professional knowledge. stay healthy, watching your channels for a while feels like i have known you for a long time.📺📺📺📺📺📱📱📱📱📱
This is amazing. I can’t wait to give this a try once we can play golf again. Thanks Mike
Hopefully you have gotten out, I've been playing for 2 months now... helps to be a member at a course. They can't stop members playing their own course.
Perfect timing for me, been practicing standing the club up, but now have the occasional shank. Now i know why, thanks Mike
Best vid I've ever seen about hip control and movement.
Very clear explanation of how the hips should move. I’ve always had the tendency to slide forward and then concentrate on turning the right hip out. Results in a lot of inconsistencies.
Absolutely brilliant and uncomplicated thanks Mike
Best regards Robert
Everything you need about downswing is in this lesson. Mike knows and very straighforward in his teaching. This is really helpful. Thanks Mike....
Two of my favorite instructors. Groundbreaking stuff here.
That is absolutely spot on!
So glad I watched all the way through. Genius was right at the end where you discuss 'distance control.' Fantastic.
Excellent explanation of what I’ve been trying to accomplish, thanks y’all
I must say that you are one of the best golf coaches on CZcams. You make it so easy to understand how the swing works. I have played for about 25-30 years and seen it all, but you make it so easy to understand. Thanks!!!! 👍
Wow.....MALASKA the master helping Eric the apprentice to understand golf swing. Mike, you are the BEST!
Thanks Mike for your great content. I struggled with early extension mainly from trying to turn my hips. Now if I keep my chest facing towards the ball throughout the swing my hips do exactly what you have demonstrated with Eric.
Thank you for this video. It has helped me immensely.
Mike, awesome perspective and also enjoy teaming with Eric. You're saving my game.
Perfectly explained!! Good instructional 17 minutes... now a subscriber!!
That first segment on your left hip going back is spot on for me it allows me to pull the club through with my core feeling like its straight up and down but feeling like the lower body rotates out of the way allowing me to turn on the power at the last minute without dragging the club round and causing a slice or hook 👍 great to see two golf experts going head to head !!!!
The only golf lesson I'll ever need.
I'm excited about this drill thank you
first youtube video I watched in full. Thanks for this. 😙😙😙
Wow! That clears up a lot
Thank you, best ever explanation of how the hips work.Saw this video and used it to help my son who had a recent left leg below the knee amputation. He now carries the ball over 300 yards. Then applied it to myself and nearly 2 clubs longer
This lesson changed my golfing to another level …for better, especially got a big impact on my driver for some reason! Thank you Mike!
Thanks Mike, I've watched Eric C and George Gankas, and their emphasis on the "Turn" Made me Early extend because as you mentioned my brain did not understand what to do. They didn't tell me the wrong thing, I just understood it wrong. The way you explain aspects of the golf swing have really resonated with me, much more than other teachers. Thank you
Amazing well stated and explained. Thank you!!
Awesome stuff Mike right on point.
I like the concept of hip push back being the tip of the snap of the towel.
I wish every golf coach were like Mike, daring to say the truth and no BS.
This video and explanation is insanely good - thankyou!
Wow!!!! That is some great stuff.
Explained is such a way that it is easy to understand what your hips do in the swing. Just signed up to malaskgolf, cant wait to get back out and put the feelings in to practise. Keep up the great work.
The best two online teachers ever!
Dear Mike I can not wait to get on course to try out so many of your ideas in anger. I have been practising in the garden and I just know my game is going to improve. I thank you in advance
Geoff
This should be required learning & teaching in golf. Mike again you are at the top of your game!!
Hi Mike Brill vids about hip movement through the golf swing i too was under the impression of rotating the hips was the way to go.But after watching your instruction i have better understanding of the hip movement i use the vision of a seesaw motion in my hip movement to help with my swing
I’ve been trying to straighten my lead leg, but lost consistence, this makes so much sense, can’t wait to take it to the range. I’ve been playing 50 years, but so much incorrect technique like you were taught as well, 50 years of your knowledges is priceless, thanks for all input enjoying my golf more than every 🤓
I agree with you Eric. Never before have I heard someone explain linear forces to produce a circular movement in such an easy graphical way. Great Malaska explanation. This video goes to the top of the "saved" videos.
Outstanding video. Thank you!
One of the best instructions I’ve seen. Eye opening explanation about many confusing ideas like rotating, turning, pivoting, clearing the hips……
Very easy to understand, expertly explained piece of advice. This is hopefully the missing link in my golf swing. I've been struggling with cleating my left hip and preventing early extension. Hopefully this is the key to unlock the solution. Mr Malaska you are a brilliant teacher!
These 2 may be the best on you tube!
Did this at the range and it worked awesome with my irons! With my driver I was getting massive snap hooks. Like to keep the same movements for all clubs if possible. Also switched to finger grip. Now hitting the ball further and purer with hip push away! Loving it. Thanks
Hey Mike, I tried your really strong grip to see what effect it had on my drive and it instantly stopped the slice!! I'm just hitting it straight now. Thanks a million for that tip.
Mike, how weird, I am just watching this video for the second time (I saved it) and thinking to myself that this instruction is pure gold dust and as I go to write this comment, see that the previous comment said similar. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Excellent explanation "Dinosaur" Experience speaks volumes. The video shots from all angles really help too.
Mark thank you. Shawn Clement talks about a similar concept of get out of the way. I’ve only applied that to my backswing. Doing the exact same on the left side for the downswing is a huge lightbulb moment.
Thank you.
Eric, I am glad you got together with Mike. We had a lesson last year around the same time I joined Mike’s website after a 17 year hiatus from the game and at the time you were unsure of Mike’s style. Joe Nichols swing, Sneads Squat, Peter Thompson’s swing are gems that have been forgotten and I’m glad Mike, Toski, and Flick kept them in our minds. Hope Your sessions with Mike
Incredible lesson, it can't be explained any easier than this. When I tried to push through my left foot to move my hip, I was trying the move too quickly. When I slowed it down to learn the movement, everything fell into place. It's a game changer.
I've been watching lots of golf related video's in the last months. I hear lots of "pro's" talk about clearing the hips. I'm from Belgium. I understand English, but it's not my native language. From your video I just understood that it has nothing to do with language! Your approach to the "clearing hips"'. I think lots of pro's talk about clearing hips, but just don't explain what you should do. Thanks you guy's. Great lesson for me!
Absolutely a genius, as a golf coach.
This is Golf Gold! In fact its probably the only thing I consistently get right in my swing! Helped me get down to 5hcp at 60yo.
GREAT VIDEO MM!👍🏽👍🏽
Great lesson!
I was struggling, today my balls were going straight left with a slight curve left as well, then I watched this video again, and I realized I was starting the left leg thrust too early. Then I went to the range and started the swing with my arms first then BANG my path started going right with a nice power draw!!! Woohoo Thank You!!
Awesome stuff!!
Great explanation of power source in golf.
I wish I could like this 3x! Thanks Mike
Ive been struggling with early extension and getting stuck under the plane because my right hip fires forward - the only way I could feel a "turn". I have been hitting right blocks and snap hooks for years. My timing had to be perfect to play well. I took your feel to the range today and it instantly changed everything. Better contact and compression and hitting a baby fade - something ive never been able to do. I videoed myself and no more early extension! Juat gone! I also hit 3 large buckets of balls, which I never do because my lower back starts hurting after one. I had zero pain! This was the single best lesson ive ever seen. You have permanently changed the way i think about turning. THANK YOU!!
I watched this also on Eric's channel. I took up golf at an older age and several teachers have told me I need to turn more, but none were able to explain how to do that in such a simple and effective way. For me, this is a game changer as I found I could do it almost instantly.

I was looking at highlights from the the Senior PGA Championship this weekend, and I saw many great swings. Richard Green had a great and efficient swing. His swing was everything I saw in what you were teaching here.
