- P.L. Travers reads through the Mary Poppins script with screenwriter Don DaGradi and the Sherman Brothers, the duo behind the film's music. The meetings took place at the Disney Studios in L.A. in 1961.

You can actually hear the nervousness in Sherman's voice when he has to intentionally omit that the waiters are penguins
They were real waiters early on - even was storyboarded that way. Considering this meeting was 3 years before the film was released, I’m guessing they still were humans at this point.
I honestly like hearing her defend her stories, the characters mean so much to her and it’s beautifully odd in the way that she did it.
I agree. I'm on Travers' side. I feel Disney ruined her father's memoir. He didn't care about her father. He only cared about the $$. You shouldn't make promises you can't keep. He never shouldn't have promised his kids. But he was so used to thinking he was God and loved getting his way.
He even had the gall to say back to her, because she said "only I know Mary Poppins," and Disney had the gall to say "no, you don't!" Excuse me, but yes she does. She created Mary Poppins. She lived Mary Poppins. Disney knows nothing. Only Travers knows. He Just wanted to steal her work and he'd say anything to get what he wanted. Even if it meant ruining it to make it kid friendly and destroy something she wrote for her father. Not HIS father. He wanted Mr. Banks to be HIS father. Walt Disney may have been a genius, but he was a very bad man. He ruined many authors' work trying to make them kid friendly. Not understanding they weren't meant for that. He didn't care if the Fairy tales or books had meanings. He was willing to ruin those meanings to get his way.
quite interesting to listen to history
she sounds like a nice enough confident, assertive lady trying to get her thoughts in on a film based on a book she wrote, her voice is amazing as well
Although, when she died, at the age of 96, her granddaughter said, "She died loving no one, and no one loving her." Which is VERY sad indeed.
swarze omg even her grand daughter didn't love her in saying that. :(
apparently she wasn't a very nice person.. just to say something she wasnted to adopt a baby when she was younger, and she found out a marriage was giving 2 twin babies. Her family asked her not to adopt just one, not to separate them, but she didn't care. She even went to an astrologist to ask which one of the two babies would be less troubled for her. She picked one and never told him he had a twin. hell, she even never told him he was adopted! he found out at the age of 17 that he was, and went to London to find his brother. When the two of them showed up in front of her she didn't even apologized or showed some kind of regret. she yelled at him with anger and prohibited him to see his brother again!
I normally respect first the authors ideas, but i feel no respect for this woman.. i'm glad Walt Disney did whatever he wanted with Mary Poppins.
Strict No-nonsense people are never admitting to a fault. They always believe that they are doing the right thing. They justify their actions as prudent. They have no sense of humor, They force people to address them with a certain title they want to be addressed as. They don't care about certain problems people are going through, They just go like "Accept Responsibility for you actions" and show no sign of forgiveness.
Wow. This is rare. Just in time for the movie's 50th anniversary.
It’s interesting listening to songs that weren’t in the final films
It's wonderful hearing a woman so confidently defending her ideas and her work. We only have these recordings, after all, due to her bold insistence. She is fantastic! Thanks for uploading this!

Before you judge do a little research into her life it was not an easy one and i think she lived in London when he confronted her yes the brother came to her door and she would not let him come in but you must understand her background from n emotional standpoint
@Blair Bart i know. but like a said, as she wasnt a good person, and as i really like Walt's version of Mary Poppins, im glad they did the movie
EstMeaVita2011 I’m glad she insisted on tape recording it! In Saving Mr. Banks they never said if she kept the tapes...
@@dani010203stor I'd argue that her life outside of her authorship is a completely different subject than Mary Poppins. She simply stood up for her work. Whether she was a good person outside of it or not, doesn't matter. Work and your personal life are two separate things and she didn't do anything here to warrant anything negative.
I can’t even imagine what it was like for Don DaGradi and the Sherman Brothers to present everything to the overly proper and uptight Mrs. Travers
In the Saving Mr. Banks movie they seemed pretty frustrating at times. Especially Bob Sherman at times
I’m glad they made the movie Saving Mr. Banks. Hardly anyone would know the true story behind the movie and how she was set in her ways. I kind of giggle thinking she was turning in her grave when saving Mr. Banks came out.
Saving Mr. Banks is not the true story. It's very fictionalized and dramatized and toned down.
Thank you for sharing this. The Sherman brothers are such a joy to hear. I'm a huge fan of their music. What a magical group of people. Disney, Sherman Bros, and Travers collaborating! Sometimes collaborating can be very difficult.
um, it was very difficult collaborating with her.
Hearing this makes me believe that a lot of sources that stated P.T. Travers was impossible to work with makes me feel like many articles are one-sided.
This is only 10 minutes worth, not the whole picture not by a long shot
can I just say that I respect her choices and what she tried to do with HER book and HER character but she did it in such a way that was a bit unkind
That's why we love her though.
Kiki Luzia hardly unkind she just wanted it to be seen as she saw it first. Watch saving Mr banks and you will see her side.
agree. but she was more than an unkind person. it was horrible what she did to her kids
@@dani010203stor what did she do to her son?
She may have been unkind as a person, but I don't think anything about what she's done here is unkind. It was her book and she simply stuck up for herself.
Thank you so much for these precious recordings. I will add this link to a posting I´m making on my edublogs on her life and work and the productions inspired by it!
After hearing this audio clip and having watched Saving Mr. Banks the movie was a bit over dramatized. It sounds like Pamela is going along with the songs and the script in the audio clip, but according to the movie Saving Mr. Banks Pamela detests what Don DaGradi and the Sherman Brothers are doing with the songs and script.
I think the truth is inbetween the extreme perspectives, in this case, cause some of the recordings played at the end of the movie show her more inflexible responses, which do match the testimony by the then only alive songwriter in one of the documentaries about her life, available here on CZcams.
Well, Blair Bart, even if this holds true when it comes to all the lovely musical compositions in this majestic movie, the fact is the songs are superb and are cultural asset which has enrichened the Mary Poppins imaginary.
It is true, in a way though, that she detested the songs. She wouldn’t allow Don or the Sherman brothers to work on the broadway play a few years after the film came out, because she didn’t want any more of their songs. She even added that to her last will and testament. And I’m sure there’s more about Mary Poppins and Disney in her will.
Well she did end up detesting the movie
Well the musical writers have often said how difficult she was to work with. They were there working with her one-on-one, we weren't. So really anything we say is pure speculation
The sherman bros playing them fantastic songs on the piano wow
Yeah
I heard this audio in the last part of Animation Lookback the History of Walt Disney Animation Studios+ a while back!
Same
wow queste registrazioni sono storia oramai 🤩❤
Knowing her past (from saving mr banks) this honestly makes me so sad :(
Oh fucking hell you can tell in the audio she was getting frustrated and very pissed off the shermen brothers were laughing most of the time while she was being very fucking serious. The songs that they brought up to her she was getting annoyed.Damn they endured hell in this brainstorming nightmare.I would of pissed my pants if she said no to every thought was brought up.
I'm on her side. I'm like her a lot of ways. I can't blame her.
I like how UMG tries to claim that there's a song from moana in this recording. A 2014 upload of a 1961 recording, somehow features a song from 2016.
After doing some research and reading on the internet about P.L. Travers, it's surprising to find out this woman had a scandalous past, even her adopted son, who's now 57, said p.l. traver's wasn't a good parent and shouldn't have been a parent. The internet describes p.l.travers as a grumpy selfish writer.
60th Anniversary this year 2024 August!
What a strong exceptional person.
That audio was soundful.
she needed the money. pure and simple.
There hasn't been any thing of evidence that said she needed that money. Far as known that is exclusively made for the movie
2019
As a Walt and pl travers were both stubborn people it was really hard to comprimese
Sorry for my english
Rip to them both
Where is this audio file originally from? Is it from an online Archive somewhere?
Instead of Hating or being rude about P L Travers, remember Her Father died when she was Just a child she probably suffered from PTSD and Anxiety and feeling Guilty about something connecting to her father she had to Step up, and Be a Parent to her sisters when Her father fallen ill and her Mother was suffering with Grief and Depression over her father. Her Aunt is the real Mary Poppins the reason why she exists Her Aunt Came when her Father was dying I think She was lonely because her Sisters haven't spoken to her or are dead, When People are depressed it can change who they once where She loved her Grandchildren and didn't want to Leave Her Fortune to her son who was gonna blow it on Drugs She had a hard life like so many before her like Judy Garland for example you cant judge people without knowing them. Mary Poppins was her childhood like walt didn't want to sell Micky Mouse SHe did not want to sell Mary Poppins
So glad you said it. Disney was the bad guy. Not her
@@BlairBart-gu7fn She didn't want the color red in the Movie because it reminded her of the blood that came from her father when he died. People gotta think we all have some sort of trauma from our lives.
@chelseychandler643 well, again, her work. I side with her. If that's how she wanted it, then so be it.
Is this everything, are any of these lost? If there are more where can I listen?
there are hours and hours of these tapes and they have not been made available to the public.
@Jack Demetriou Lmfao you have 2 signatures. Hopefully no more.
Must say imagine it must have been difficult talking to her.but fair play to her it was her baby and she had a right to be annoyed at all the messing around at her project.
6:38 in this part you can hear a cut song that they use that pice as the admiral booms theme sorry for any imperfections in that comment I’m Greek
Bless her. Her fears came true. They changed the whol book.
I wish she never signed it over to him.
Look sometimes bad things benefits other people. For me the movie is part of my best memories when I was a kid, watching the film with my grandma in the coach and having dinner and singing the songs I don't have such great memories than those, every time I see the film I remember those times. I think It is good to know that the book is one thing (autor vision) and the movie is the representation of walt imagination and interpretation of the book and I like both
And ruined it. Because the majority of the world doesn't even know who she is. They only thinking of the Disney version. Yes, her name is credited in the beginning but that's it. It shouldn't have been Walt Disney's Mary Poppins. He tricked her into signing because he refused to leave her alone.
@kaittxo you said it. He destroyed her work to claim it for himself.
Did they refer to this recordings, when they made the film "Saving Mr. Banks"?
Rob F You probably already know this, but yes. It even shows a bit of them during the credits
Yes
of course.
I wonder if she would've approved the sequel...
TimTube It was another musical with another animated sequence. So I don’t think she’d like it any more then she liked the original
Oh she would have DESPISED IT!!!
@@TheHManShow Probably, yeah. But I thought that maybe it'd turn her over, seeing how many people I've heard from that felt more joyous in their lives because of the movie than they did in ages.
But then again, while writing this comment, I thought of the fact that these people most likely already existed back in her day. I even wanted to go on about how the industry changed from being focussed on making money to the arts and messages, but if we're being honest, most big movie companies simply got better at hiding it for the consumer.
Yeah, maybe she would've despised it after all. 😄
I'd seriously doubt it
@@TheHManShow if she was alive to see the sequel she probably wouldn't be happy
Who else is doing this for school?

Emma Thompson made her mean in a more comical way
Is it me, or dose P L Travers not sound consulting.
huh? in English please.
She is saying that Travers sounds more like Harlan Ellison than Stephen King in consulting an adaptation of her works.
I understand her feelings but film is a collaborative art and she almost wanted to redirect and write the script to the letter.
It says not available in this country. Please fix it so we can enjoy this video
I need sub in spanish :"/
Is she the first and only person who was to hard for Disney to deal with😠
More or less yeah.
Actually if you ever heard her back story you'll see exactly why she acts so tough with them. The characters and events were based on real life events. It was all based on her father who died a acholic.
Also, it csnt be easy to see your treasured creation commodified with changes you explicitly spoke against, all so Walt Disney could make some dollars
After listening to this, I now understand why authors have very little say in how their books are translated to film. She ruined it for all future authors.
She ruined it line seems a bit harsh
JKR had a decent amount of control...
No, she didn't. They ruined it for her.
@@NairAthulexactly.
Did Emma sound like her?
From the trailer that I seen, she kind of sounds like Julia Childs only with a British accent.
I think Emma nailed the way she speaks quite well.
Olga Levin Although, she was Australian.
swarze but she pretended to be British...jsyk
swarze That part I forgot completely lol. I honestly don't know her bio very well, but I'm assuming she must have been from Sydney or some thing like that. She also moved to the UK sometime in her life is what I hear.
My god this woman was so uptight!! Tipical conservative English woman.... relaaaaaaaaaaxxxx geeezz
BEG MAR it was her book why shouldn’t she have most of the say in what they do with it
She wanted everything to be exact to her book. Mary Poppins was based on her aunt. Everything was based on her childhood events. You'll be saddened by her back story
You clearly haven't met many English people seeing as you're so happy to throw those ignorant stereotypes around
Ignorant
She was an Aussie 😂
She was not a very likeable woman. She was snobby, rude and somewhat xenophobic. Robert Sherman had a limp caused by a war injury and she insulted him over it. And her adopted son, upon learning the truth that she took only him and not his twin (as she'd agreed) broke off contact.
P.L. Travers wrote Mary Poppins???
yes.
Y’all
What an uptight disagreeable miserable woman. I've never liked people like this growing up. Some old men can be the same, grumpy, standoffiish, offended by others even existing around them. Typical hyper conservative mind set. I respect her for defending her work, but as a person she couldn't get a star on yelp.
It's as even her own daughter said. "She died loving no one and being loved by no one" that's sad as hell and as a mother myself I really hope that's not how I'll be remembered when I pass away.
I agree. What a spiteful curmudgeonly termagant.
She had every right to be this way. It was Disney that ruined it for her.
She was a miserable tyrant.
