September 11, 2001 has had an incredible impact on my life. I remember thinking that day that it was going to be something I would never forget. Hardly a day goes by that I don’t think about it. It was the day Nickelback’s album Silver Side Up was released.
I went to Walmart to buy it. The cashier was crying. She must have already listened to it and was affected by some of the more emotional songs. On the way home I popped it into my CD player. I was blown away by it from the very first moment. I tried to stop at a gas station, but for some reason they were all crowded. I guess it was all the people going out to buy the new album. When I got home my parents asked me if I had heard the news. I told them I already knew about the new Nickelback album. I went to my room to listen to it. Every song was amazing and the track layout was perfect. The cover art was awesome. Chad Kroeger and the other guys looked like the epitome of rockstars. It was an incredible work of genius and I could understand why the cashier was so emotional. I had loved Curb and The State, but this was something completely new and different from my favorite band. My parents were watching the news really loud so I had to turn it up to drown that out. I played it on repeat over and over until I fell asleep. It was one of the most memorable days of my life. I can’t even begin to imagine what my life would be like without Silver Side Up.

I still like this album, even with a few imperfections.
Personally, "Never Again," "How You Remind Me," "Woke Up This Morning," "Too Bad," and "Just For."
And while the rest of the tracks aren't as memorable, I don't regret listening to them.
Sure, while Nickelback might seem mediocre to some people, personally I think they're a bit catchy for a post-grunge band. And this is coming from somebody who loves The State.
I dunno, maybe I'm the only person who legitimately likes Nickelback.
I'm not trying to shed some bad blood, I respect your opinion and you have made a well-informative video.
But deep down I still really like this album, even if it's pretty flawed.

And? Is that supposed to mean something? This is the musical equivalent of saying "god exists because I feel he exists". Since when have converts or people who stop believing something has ever proven anything? Pure superstition nonsense.
Of course you will like it, you have a positive bias towards it (the music of Nickelback). Is that supposed to be impressive or remarkable?
This is like one of those fraudulent testimonials for bullshit trading scams that point to these "testimonials" that say "oh look at our satisfied customers". This why converts are useless in determining the validity of anything, they're pure anecdotes.

To be honest, I still like Nickelback in their early days.
Particularly their first two albums, Curb and The State.
Silver Side Up was okay, though. While I didn't mind that album, there were only like 5 songs that I liked. The Long Road was better, with plenty of decent tracks that I wouldn't mind listening to for a second time.
As for their later albums; All the Right Reasons, Dark Horse, Here and Now, No Fixed Address, they just felt sort of "there" to me. Not terrible, but they just didn't click to me as much as their earlier albums.
Feed the Machine was pretty good, though.

I'd say it's not so much the album that needs to be regretted as much as what it represents in terms of those bands who are far worse than Nickelback, and their willingness to simply rest on their laurels instead of continuing to place effort into their music. I won't lie, I used to like some of the songs from the album, but my tastes have changed and I can't deny that it unfortunately set a precedent both for Nickelback and for bands that prospered thanks to their success. I dread to think of the cavalcade of awful schlock that has entered into the public consciousness and became hits thanks to what they released.

I think you were actually fair to Nickelback and that's a rare thing. Sure, you don't like them but you don't have to.
I'm not a super fan of Nickelback or anything, but I like them for what they are and it bugs me when people try to say they're the worst band in the world. There are much much worse bands than Nickelback. Hell, they aren't even the worst post-grunge band. The Calling, anyone?

    • @zander3100
      @zander3100 Před 9 lety +2

The calling? Oh you mean the band we never heard from again after one successful single, as opposed to some bands that go through ten years of mediocre music and are still successful because of that?
      Yeah, I wonder why...
Also, The Calling post grunge? No, I don't think so. They were as pop as a male version of pink could be.

    • @wombatkidd
      @wombatkidd Před 9 lety +3

xzander So because Nickelback has managed to write more than one song people will actually listen to they are worse than a band that couldn't. ... That's a pretty creative way to spin things I guess.
Also people call nickelback pop too. It's not. How much you like something doesn't change its genre.
Lastly, the Calling's single album was completely unlistenable except for the one song. It is by far worse than any of Nickelback's albums. And that is a statement I will stand by.
But that's my point. Nickelback isn't really all that bad. The really bad stuff goes away and people forget about it. A band has to have a minimum level of quality to even be around long enough to get the kind of blind hate Nickelback does.
I could probably name at least 2 dozen bands that are way worse but no one bitches because almost book one listens to them anyway. So yeah, they're not great but calling them the worst band ever is just blind bullshit. There's lots worse.

Yeah, some of their tracks are kinda stupid, but there are a few diamonds in the rough.
I mean, I wouldn't call this the "best" thing ever or anything (The State is debatably better), but it's not as horrible as others make it out to be.
I mean, it's no Alter Bridge, but it's still better than the likes of Simple Plan or Attila.
Personally, I liked "Never Again," "How You Remind Me," "Too Bad," and "Just For." The rest of them are kind of meh, in my opinion.

To be fair, Michael Bay delivers on what we want, mindless action, his stories are derivative but he's not selling a compelling character piece, he never was. So its a bit pretentious to assume a band with decent lyrics and riffs is on Bay's level....
They still give us what we want, a catchy tune and chorus. We can't sit here and act like many of us tone done the elitist and listen to some Katy Perry or One Direction.

Especially with songs like Never Again, How You Remind Me, and Just For.
Being a victim of domestic abuse, I can relate to music like this.
I remember when my ex-boyfriend kept egging me on that I didn't keep texting him, and there were times where he beat the shit out of me just for kicks or whenever he had a bad day.

Here are my thoughts on the songs of Silver Side Up:
1: Has a nice beat, but the lyrics are kind of a downer.
2: It's alright. Not great, but not terrible. Just really overexposed.
      3: Meh.
4: Pretty melodramatic and sounds like something out of a movie. A really, really boring movie
5: Okay song overshadowed by edgy lyrics
6: Just empty boasting. And has awful autotune
      7: Uninteresting and Unimpressive
      8: Pretentious Emo Garbage
9: Sounds the same as the last song
10: This sounds like "bro-country" crap. Which sounds ironic for a rock band.
All in all, just "meh". Silver Side Up is just okay. Not great, but not terrible. It's sort of there.

"Never made it as a wise man, I couldn't cut it as a poor man stealin."
Ha, I've never heard of Nickelback, and from what I've heard, they weren't very good. I heard they were generic and formulaic.
So, as a "generic" anime main character, I'll see what I think about Silver Side Up:

    • @kazutokirigaya1095
      @kazutokirigaya1095 Před 7 lety +18

1: Well, not on the best of starts. It does have a nice rhythm, but rather saddening lyrics.
2: It was decent, even if I heard songs like this before.
3: It's not _too_ bad, but it kinda feels like filler.
4: I get what they were going for, but it's just a tad bit too melodramatic. Even for me.
5: Has a nice rhythm and beat, but it's kind of generic.
6: Not a big fan of this track, especially that autotune voice.
7: Again, I didn't care for this track.
8: Wow, this was cheesy and melodramatic as hell. I'm definitely not gonna return to this track.
      9: Meh.
10: I didn't think this was any good. At all.
Overall, Silver Side Up just wasn't a very interesting album, and I usually have a pretty open mind towards music. I mean, I'm no Nickelback fan, but I'm aware they made a few decent tracks (I have heard The State), but I just can't really find any real substance apart from the two tracks.
      It just wasn't for me.

Great review. Thanks for the heartfelt part about supporting artists man. It means a lot as an up both a musician starting out and a guy who music has meant the world to, and quite possibly saved my life or at least mind. I'd like state though that emo is by no means all a bunch of flamboyant, emotionally immature people with a penchant for self-harm. When emo was created it was just introspective punk. Very little moping about it. Rites of Spring, Lungfish, and American Football are all terrific groups that don't fit the negative image it has garnered. Aside from that, excellent review. I'm really sad about how Nickelback's cynical marketing paid off. I mean, if Kroeger's smart enough to perfectly recognize and exploit rock formula, imagine what they could have done if they actually wanted to make something really good...

    • @CasualAlbiniAppreciator
      @CasualAlbiniAppreciator Před 9 lety +3

+Jordan Stusiak (Kingfisher's Brother) agreed, even Embrace (McKaye's post-Minor Threat band) was branded as "emotional hardcore" back in mid 80's and those were all really good bands (even if the records are a bit dated, but that's understandable, DYI ethics and all that). Somehow emo began to be equated not with post-hardcore or melodic punk bands with sadder songs, but with whiny manchildren pandering to teens and sadly the stereotype is still strong. Good thing the commercial success of the "subculture" faded in the last few years, most of the bands who just wanted cash and didn't give a flying fuck about an artistic integrity disappeared and the class acts remained (such as Rise Against, Billy Talent, Thrice - while RA and BT aren't emo per se, there are definitely strong emo/posthc roots they have). Thanks to that the emo resurgence shows some promise, fingers crossed it won't end up being another scam by label execs.

    You did something I could never do: listen to a Nickelback album from beginning to end. I know it's easy to pick on the Triforce of Suckage, especially Nickelback since they're still relevant and their music is still popular (enough), but I like how fair you have been to both Limp Bizkit and Nickelback. Their music sucks, but there's potential, but they waste their potential, especially Nickelback, on being mediocre to appeal to the masses. I also like how informative you are with Nickelback's success/hunger for success and money they decided to make generic music. I have to admit, when I was like 14-16, I quite liked their music (Limp Bizkit more than Nickelback) because I listened to whatever the radio and Mtv told me to listen to. Looking back now, I cringe at what I thought was good, but, if it counts for anything, I never bought any of Nickelback's or Limp Bizkit's albums. Thanks for your Regretting the Past videos. Your Limp Bizkit video was the first video of yours' I watched and I think you're really funny and your editing is well on point. Very educational too!     Okay, here's my thoughts on Silver Side Up from Nickelback;
1: I like the guitar work and drums of this song, but the lyrics are kind of a downer.
2: Perhaps one of my favorite songs of the album. It has pretty good instrumentals and I think it has a good (if not formulaic) lyrical message.
3: Alright, but not as good as the last song.
4: I get what they were going for in this song, but I think they hammered in the melodrama far too deeply.
5: I think it's a decent song, even if it has pretty generic lyrics.
6: I'm not a big fan of the "techno voice" used in this song.
    7: Forgettable.
8: I feel like they went off the rails with the dark lyrics.
9: It sounds the same as the last song, mostly in an instrumental sense. I don't have anything to say about it other than it being boring and forgettable.
10: This was pretty long and drawn-out, even for a closing track.
So in conclusion, Silver Side Up is a below-average album for me. It's not the worst thing I ever heard, but I feel like it could've been a lot better.

Interesting analysis. As someone who legitimately likes Nickelback, here is my thoughts on Silver Side Up:
1: I liked the rhythm of this song.
2: My favorite song from this album.
3: Not as good as _How You Remind Me_ but it's pretty decent, in my opinion.
4: Has pretty downer lyrics, but has a catchy hook to it.
5: I really liked this song. It sounds pretty heavy and fast, like with _Never Again._
6: It's alright, even if the techno voice is pretty jarring.
7: Even as a bland and forgettable song, it sounds pretty alright.
8: Yeah, I think they went a little too far on the lyrics. Not really something I'd listen to for a second time.
      9: Eh, I liked it.
      10: It's a bit drawn-out, but I thought it was okay.
Silver Side Up has a more misses than bullseyes, but still it's something I'd return to and I wouldn't mind.
This album is bit of a guilty pleasure, much like the band itself.

Okay, I'll give my two cents on the entire album:
    1. It's a pretty heavy song. A bit lackluster on the guitar work, but I can still salvage this one, even with its lyrics.
    2. I'll say it now, this is one of my favorite songs of all time. It may be generic in terms of structure and sound, but the lyrics are what make this song worth listening to. If I could make a reccomendation: get the single. You get this song and an acoustic version of leader of men.
    3. It's enjoyable, but it's pretty generic. Honestly, I'd listen to the live versions at sturgis, Edmonton, or ischgl to enjoy it.
    4. Somber lyrics aside, this song is pretty memorable for all the right reasons (haha). I wouldn't call it the best, but I'll listen to it if it's on.
    5. I actually heard this was a redo of an earlier song "just four". I have no idea why they would do this, but I might never get an answer. Which version do I prefer? I don't know. It's a pretty generic song.
    6. Honestly, not only is the synthesized voice a problem, but chad kroeger's voice in every verse apart from the chorus sounds off with the instruments behind him. This is just hard for me to listen to.
    7. I don't even know what to say. This is a pretty boring song. Next!
    8. No joke, I actually enjoy this song. Yeah, it's just the same as the others, but I can listen to this and have a good time. Honestly the live performances from 2001-2004 were what made this song cooler.
    9. Wait, didn't I hear this song a moment ago? I don't get it. Why would you take one song, copy it, make it into something new, and put it after that song you were copying?
    10. Yeah, this title is pretty fitting for the song. All of the good times are gone when you listen to this twangy waste of musical talent. It's hard to sit through, and is probably the worst song on this album.
Overall, yeah I could see why people hate this album, but I wouldn't consider it the worst. I could only enjoy half of the album. The rest is just bland filler. While I still consider nickelback a guilty pleasure band, that doesn't mean they're all good...or even slightly good.

Great review on Silver Side Up, dude. I’ll admit, though, I’m in the party that actually enjoys this album (to an extent). Songs that you considered filler (“Woke Up This Morning” and “Where Do I Hide,” for example) are some of my favorites because the instrumental work is so well done, with tight grooves, fun guitar riffs, and an energetic feel. Songs like “Too Bad” (yeah, it’s melodramatic, but I feel it’s far from insincere) and even “Hollywood” (I can get past the computerized “Hollywood” chorus chant because the guitar has such a down-low, snarky feel to it) are also fairly well done. And while “Never Again” is an odd song to start off (it’s lyrics are way too dark and specific to be an album opener), it’s still a great song with an energetic feel and a strong message. So, I do believe there is something to gain from this record.
With that said, I do agree that the album is HUGELY generic, and Chad’s analysis of what sells and how this album actually succeeded can definitely be seen as cynical at its worst. But to be fair, you can’t fault them for seeing something that would get them noticed and it actually working like a charm. I’d be more admirable if the band evolved beyond the pop formula. They’ve certainly evolved as instrumentalists and musicians, but as a whole, they’re riding that formula. It’s the same old “if it ain’t broke; don’t fix it adage. Hell in Nickelback’s case, it’s more like “if it ain’t broke, don’t break it.”
So yeah, there are way worse albums than this. It’s not their worst, and to say that Nickelback is the “worst band ever” is childish exaggeration if I’ve ever heard it. There are way worse bands than this that I personally cannot stand (the less Scott Stapp and/or Fred Durst, the better). And compared to what’s out now, I’ll take a thousand “How You Remind Me’s” over a “Thunder (by Imagine Dragons)” or whatever the mainstream is considering “rock” nowadays.

Oh God. I'M part of the problem. I listened to most of these songs quite a bit when I was in high school. But listening to them now, and hearing that bit about them seeking to make songs that sound good to people and have no real substance...just makes me feel really sad inside. I sometimes hate videos like this because they make me question my ability to discern good things from bad. Luckily I think the only album I've bought recently was No Doubt's Spiderwebs. So, I feel a little better, but still this makes me simultaneously sad and angry for liking this boring corporate noise as much as I did. Thank you for this. I needed someone to show me how dumb I was as a teenager.

I can't believe this was released the same day as They Might Be Giants "Mink Car"!

My radio station STILL plays Nickelback (and Theory of a Deadman). Don't go to Oklahoma, kids.

Its crazy to me. I have this album but havent listened to it in about 20 years. As you were going through it nothing sounded familiar past "too bad." Side note: I also remember liking some stuff by Nickelback after this album before realizing about 10 years ago everything they put out was all "how you remind me" over and over again

I decided to rewatch this playlist because I like your content, it reminded me that I bought this cd because I liked The State. Everything after the first 3 songs sucked, and I don't think I listened to them ever again

What is with the clean guitar undertones when a new track is being played? Was this done on purpose? If you listen carefully you can hear what sounds like a guitar playing E and A strings randomly. Am I the only one hearing this?!

My parents bought this album, but I only think they listened to it once or twice. Thank goodness.

Would be great if that child grows up and is like "Mom, Dad, your music sucks and I'm going to try to make better."

Another one with a song I have nostalgia for, I got 'How You Remind Me' stuck in my head before one of the best games I played.
