  • Hunting New Mexico archery elk Randy Newberg finds hard hunting, but a rewarding hunt. Episode 4 from Season 2 of Fresh Tracks is where Randy returns to his favorite New Mexico grasslands to spot and stalk archery bulls. An old elk friend, “One-beam,” again becomes the bull of choice in Randy’s hunt. Three years prior, the bull was granted a reprieve, in hopes his other antler would re-grow. At 28 yards, “One-beam” and Randy have a 15-minute showdown.

You motivate folks to do the right thing and put pride aside in lieu of "filling a tag". Thanks for your humble attitude.

Thanks for the kind comments. Hunting is far too important to me for it to be complicated by the pressures of filling tags and finding only the biggest animal around. Glad you find it worth watching. Best of luck this season.

honestly this is the first time I have ever had an understanding of why bow hunting is a thing and your humble reaction to the hunt makes so much sense!

A lot of people will never get that close to an elk. In my book that's a win. That kind of excitement would give me a stroke I think! Great stalk Randy.

I wouldn't have taken a shot on that bull at any time after he stood up, either. Never saw a high chance kill opportunity there.

700 gabriel elk hunting has recently been reintroduced in a few units that have been broken into smaller harvest areas for elk in south/eastern Ontario. They only drew 55 tags last yr...very limited hunt but promising to see its return.

You should have known better, I've seen a video where the elk smelled the hunters from 600 yards.
