    Not rubber but leather. You make them using a piece of leather, and soaking it in hoof oil, then get the bend in it by cutting out the large circle, and assembling it on the shaft in reverse, with the large washer at the far end. Then put in the housing, well oiled, and making the softened leather gradually bend to fit the housing, then leave in there for a few hours, pull out and assemble the right way round. The leather is treated with hoof oil or Dubbin, both available probably at the local store, the Dubbin being used for suede leather shoes, as it is a pale yellow leather treatment, and thus on suede it does not darken it like shoe polish, though boot polish is likely what was used on there over the years.

      Neatsfoot oil, also. If the leather isn't ripped or torn probably vegetable oil would be fine to soften it up. I often use most any light oil.

      Isn't the seal on the hose also leather? So it's a bit of shame to replace it with that newfangled rubber o-ring.

    • @thisisyourcaptainspeaking2259
      @thisisyourcaptainspeaking2259 Před rokem +3

      @@alexej01 Correct, all the seals would be leather soaked in oil. The check valve might be rubber, I don't recall the detail of my (almost identical, slightly newer) pump.

      Agree, thick leather. Same in optimus primus, petromax, etc. We used to oil it with weapon - oil when i was in the army.

  • @LarryKapp1
    @LarryKapp1 Před rokem +41

    That looks exactly like the pump I used as a kid for my bicycle tires , usually all I had to do was pull the piston out and spread it out a bit and put a bit of oil in there so it made a better seal. I think the piston is leather and not rubber. Those cheap pumps didn't have a check valve in them. You needed to be fast to disconnect the hose from tire stem while pushing down on the pump so not much air would escape from tire. New pumps are so much better these days !

    My Grandpa still use a similar air pump for his Bike.
    The 'clean' side of the big washer is cleaner because every pump strike the rubber press against it and kind of press dirt out or grind very little.
    You see the small bending of the washer.. so you know the big main force during an air pump strike comes from above/the handle going down.
    Forcing the nut in the center down .. but the outer ring of rubber together with the increasing air pressure try to push the washer up.
    I would try to use a better grease.. no random WD40 spraycan or similiar :-/
    Most old rubbers nemisis is not their oldeness .. its modern aggressiv oil.
    Try vaseline(petroleum jelly/petrolatum?) , vegetable oil or specialised grease for rubber.
    Thanks for non electronic videos too ;-)
    And nice to know that there are people who are helpful and not only looking on the Smartphones the whole day, during driving or crossing a railway track.

    • @hullinstruments
      @hullinstruments Před rokem

      You are exactly right and even though these are leather pieces in this video... lubricants containing petroleum distillates can do similar things to leather overtime. According to how the leather was originally tanned.... Defines how bad it gets and how fast. But you absolutely want to keep petroleum jelly or anyting containing petroleum away from a lot of rubbers if possible. One of the simplest things is that silicone type grease at the auto parts store for light bulbs and stuff like that. A lot of it is totally most of the other harmful distillates.
      There are a lot of specialized lubricants used in aerospace ect..... that are totally petroleum-free. And the first thing someone can do is to throw out anything made by "armor All"or other automotive detailing stuff... And replace it with the 3M stuff that does the same thing but without any petroleum distillates. It's so funny because "armor All" overtime destroys rubber and plastic and other composites... Not the armor All But the varying levels of petroleum distillates. The first place one will see this is in the rubber weatherproofing trim around doors and windows. They get harder and more brittle and no matter how much armor All use... They soften up temporarily only to dry out even more extremely. It's lighter than with some good petroleum free dielectric/silicone grease... And watch the magic happen. (Then probably take off the excess that wasn't absorbed)
      So many of the cleaning and detailing products out there will destroy just about any composite given enough time or penetration. Maybe not a big deal in our throwaway world where people only keep cars and devices for a few years... But becomes much more pertinent it working with actually well-designed and timeless scientific equipment, automobiles, or other engineering marvels

    Very similar were bicycle tyre pumps in the UK in the 50s and 60s. Often had 2 fold out bits to stand on where yours has one. Super simple and the diaphram was leather and could be easily replaced if it wore out. Things were made to last a lifetime back then.

    You're spot on about the check valve being inside the hose fitting. It's construction is often similar to the piston seal, but backwards (and obviously smaller), so it's pushed closed by pressure from the tire.

    Recently I repaired a similar pump. It had no compression and it was leaking air at the bottom. I added a thin rubber ring around the old rubber or leather thing, oil it and I push it over the other end with the stand. I used pliers to make sure it's spread to touch the walls of the tube. I added teflon tape to seal the air leak. It use to take 20 pumps to inflate my bicycle, now it takes 5 or 6. There is vacuum that pull the lever down once I begin pumping. To let air in I have to pull up so the leather ring is over the small hole at the top.

    If it's not as good as you expected, perhaps make a disk of wood or plastic to apply a little pressure to the inside of the old rubber cup.

    There are actually pneumatic circuit boards so this isn’t necessarily off topic!
    I was shown one when I was studying many years ago. They were used in oil refineries etc where sparks cannot be allowed to happen.
    They consisted of two plates one on top of the other. Traces were raised paths in the top plate, forming tubes. Resistors were venturi in those tubes. Current was airflow in the tubes. Voltage was air pressure. Capacitors were little spring loaded bellows. Switches and relays were little pistons. I don’t recall too much as it was long ago but I do remember that most basic components can be simulated with air devices.

We often had to rebuild surgery and exam tables. even modern tables that use electric or mechanical hydraulic height adjustment all use leather seals. we had rolls of different thickness leather and large sharp hole punches and just cut our own replacement cups and using nylon or wood hammer, reshaped it into the cup. they last years with very little failure. 40 years ago had the black but otherwise identical version of this pump. Sadly like many of his old
    tools they went to the tip after no one wanted them.If it's got mineral grease or oil on a rubber piston
    it will gradually perish. You can use vegetable oil to lubricate it without worrying about perishing.
    Could the piston and other fibre washer possibly be leather/thick hide by any chance? Also if the
    nut thread isn't m8x1.25mm, it may be 5/16 UNC thread, they look very close. I think these pumps
    may have came from the army originally.

    I would have expected to see a simple one way check valve at the base of the pump, but I suppose it would work without one. You can replace the rubber diaphragm with a leather one, you just take a scrap of this leather, cut it in a circle perhaps 2cm wider than the diameter of the pump body, soak it in water then assemble it back to front on the pump shaft so it's nut, small washer, diaphragm, large washer, then nut, insert it into the pump body and leave it to dry, once dry remove it, trim the edges, soak it in olive oil and assemble it the correct way round.

    The thought process used for diagnosing and repair, is the same for electronics and mechanical things. It was designed to work. It did work and now it doesn't. Why? Pumps like that are very common and used for years. The old ones (like yours) use leather for the piston and washers. Rubber was only used when modern synthetics were developed. There was never a one way valve. It relied on the valve on the tyre, to stop it blowing back.

    It looks like it might be good to replace the rubber... but I have no idea of what you could replace it with... so perhaps cleaning it up is all that can be done.
    ..... looks like it's going to work OK anyway.

    That's a leather cup, you can see the skin texture on the flatter side, longer lasting than any leather, not vegan friendly, but who cares, it's a tool... :P

    There are phones with schematics available made by Fairphone. You can easily take them apart and replace modules like the battery, screen or cameras, or even diagnose the board if you have a microscope and precision soldering technology. They don’t have a great power to price ratio but neither do flagship phones that cost 3-5 times the cheaper model, with no difference except a better camera and the microSD slot being replaced with copious amounts of on-board storage, and the headphone jack with nothing. I think that the Fairphone’s repairability may be worth it in the long term if parts continue to be available. Make sure to let them know there is demand for such devices!

      Then you only need fully open source software on those with the support of your business partners (banks, government, etc). Let me know when we're there.

      @@atdzsny I’m talking about hardware repairability.
      Anyway, while it’s true that not every app you need is FOSS, an AOSP-based ROM with Open Gapps will get you a good privacy/functionality balance. Don’t let the perfect be an enemy of the good!
      By the way, there is an initiative to release the code for all government-made client-side apps in the EU that you can support.

      @@vaclavtrpisovsky I didn't mention software without a reason. That's the soul of modern smartphones. And a lot of apps are time-bombed: you can't use them unless you upgrade. And even if your hardware is perfectly functional, you"ll find that it is no longer supported. (Can you link that initiative? I couldn't find it.)

      @@atdzsny I cannot paste a link due to the spam policy. Last time I saw it, it was a petition pushed by F-Droid, CCC, Wikipedia, GNU Foundation and others. I cannot find that document but apparently, a project called _GovernSource_ came out of this and also includes backend code such as a unified database system for jurisdictions.

    The bigger metal washer sits above the rubber seal and that works to catch air on the way down and allows air to slip by on the way up. The pump actually gets warm from the air pressure and valve friction. And another piece of useless information, it wheezes when you stroke it rapidly.
