I recommend watching the second movie. It’s lower in quality but only because it is a fusion of three episodes of an unfinished series that was planned. Not sure why they cancelled the series, what we got was enjoyable and I would’ve liked to see more, but the characters had a slight shift in personality probably due to time constraints. Hopefully the minor issues don’t ruin your perspective of the movie if you watch it.

The voice acting is good too, each of the “adventure capitalist” team is a memorable character, which is more than I can say for a lot of movies even Disney classics. Side characters aren’t just filler.
It has a special place in my heart, one of the reasons I pursued anthropology from childhood through college (incl. other classics like Jurassic Park).
I think it also does a good job criticizing the history of anthropology and how it’s not just your motives but the actions you take that define the ethics of your expedition.
Black Panther expands upon that too and I don’t know if it’s weird I connect them mentally.

I remember the Atlantian and other languages having subtitles in a DVD re-release of this movie, shame to see later versions didn't bother with a translation. Milo and Kida's conversation at 18:49 goes roughly like:
Kida: Who are you strangers and where did you come from?
Milo: Who are *you* strangers and where did you come from?
Kida: Your manner of speech is strange to me.
    Milo: I travel friend!
Kida: You "travel friend"...you are a friendly traveler?
Milo: (Latin) Yes, I am a friendly traveler. (Very rough translation lol)

Producer Don Hahn was saddened that Varney never saw the finished film, but mentioned that he was shown clips of his character's performance during his site sessions and said, "He loved it." Shawn Keller, supervising animator for Cookie, stated, "It was kind of a sad fact that he knew that he was not going to be able to see this film before he passed away. The facts I have:
This was Disney's first foray into an animated action adventure film,
Tne directors Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise previously directed Beauty and the Beast and Hunchback of Notre Dame,
The voice of Vinny- Don Novello would read through his dialogue the way it was written the first time and then they would allow him to improvise his words and that is what is in the film,
Jim Varney who voiced Cookie died during production so some his dialogue near the end is done by a replacement he voiced Slinky Dog in the first two Toy Story films and also known for his Ernest films,
The language of the Atlanteans was created specifically created for the film and made by the same man who created the Klingon language in Star Trek,
Legendary actor James Garner only agreed to play the villain Rourke when the people working on the film told him it would be like his older military roles,
Michael J. Fox improvised the line “Carrots why is it always carrots”,
The filmmakers felt a cinemascope widescreen aspect ratio would be perfect for the film as a throwback to old fashion adventure films,
The artistic look of the film was inspired by Mike Mignola who is the comic book artist behind hellboy and was actually one of the four production designers for the film,
While this last one isn’t a fact about the film it is a fact about me. I love Kida Nedakh and have a pretty good size collection of Atlantis items either of toys, pins or other items featuring her or are of her. I have 25 items so far and there is quite a few I have my eyes out for,
The full pronunciation of her name is (key-Duh, Knee-dach),
She is my favorite unofficial and overall favorite Disney Princess of all time!
So even though Joss Whedon has a story credit Don Hawn and the others involved with the production said all he did was one time pitch an idea like it to the studio and so they listed him credited mainly to avoid a lawsuit,
The last thing is a big one and explains the pacing problem of the film. See in 2000 Disney released a film called Dinosaur and it wasn't as big a hit as they were hoping for so they slashed the budget for this film and the original screenplay was 155 pages and so the original version of the film would have been that long one page equals one minute of film so with the cuts they had to drop:
    The entire second act,
Cut down the final battle whixh would have been much bigger,
And Cut the reveal that the Crystal was of Alien origin discovered by Atlanteans a millena ago,
That's not all though see they also had plans to do a tv series, but since the film wasn't a hit (gee I wonder why) the studio also dropped the planned tv series so that which was done as abandoned episodes were compiled into Atlantis Milo's Return a direct to video release. The real kicker is the series would have had a crossover with Gargoyles! Freakin Gargoyles. All of this makes me hate the film Dinosaur even more than I already did,

21:35 this estimate is 2700 years shy. Atlantis sank, according to Plato, in 9600 BCE. This corresponds with the end of the Younger Dryas period, when the ocean level rose almost 400 feet, inundating low-lying lands-like Atlantis. This puts Kida’s age in 1914 as at least 11,500 years old, not 8800.

I think my favorite thing about this movie is how Atlantis isn't depicted as a Greco-Roman society. While the original story did come from Greece, Plato described Atlantis as being much further west. West of Egypt, at least. Though I don't remember the exact description.

Fun fact! What he drank may have actually been Nitro as it lowers blood pressure and is used as a heart medication, he would have gotten extremely light headed and passed out before being given medical attention. It needs a bit more than a little scare to set it off, something more along the lines of a direct shock.

3:19 You might also know Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly from "Back to the Future"! Sadly, he has Parkinson's now, but he still appears at Comic Cons from time to time.
Someone pointed out on Tumblr that the fish in Whitmore's aquarium (5:58) are coelacanths! The movie is set in the 1910s, but the coelacanth wouldn't be discovered until 1938, nearly a full decade later!
The gag at 7:06 is a reference to the fact that Michael J. Fox is allergic to carrots!
Cree Summer, a voice actress from my childhood (you may know her from Kids Next Door as Numbuh 5, who, coincidentally enough, also has a sister named Cree), voices Kida, and she has expressed profusely for Kida to be included in the Disney Princess pantheon. I kinda share the sentiment there, but being a part of an underrated Disney flick is good enough for me.
This was also the final film role that Jim Varney (Slinky, and he also plays Cookie here) ever did, passing away before the release of this film and Toy Story 2 being widely available on VHS. Leonard Nimoy (a.k.a. Captain Spock) also voiced Kida's dad, and he passed away in 2015
And yes, my favorite character was Doc Sweet, I had a Native American great-grandma myself!

This and Treasure Planet are my top favs of the underappreciated Disney movies. Both films got poor marketing so didn't do well as a result in theaters. Which is tragic because they're both very good movies that hold up as far as CGI use in it. Atlantis though at least got a "sequel" but it's not really a sequel. It's a compilation of "episodes" for a TV series that ended up never seeing the light of day. They did the same thing with Tarzan's sequel. But Tarzan actually did end up with a TV series being made.

There's actually some very interesting history behind the particular studio that made this movie.
This, and several other movies came from the Florida studio, which for a long time was a backup animation studio that did work the main Burbank studio didn't have time for.
Then in 1996 Disney decided to focus all their energy on transitioning to 3D animation, acquired Pixar and started working on A Bug's Life.
They basically told the Florida studio (their only remaining full-time 2D animation studio) they could do whatever movies they wanted.
And the Florida studio, for the first time, got to produce feature films:
    • Mulan (1998)
    • Tarzan (1999)
    •John Henry (2000)
    • The Emperor's New Groove (2000)
    • Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)
    • Lilo & Stitch (2002)
    • Brother Bear (2003)
Then in 2004 Disney decided to stop producing 2-D feature films altogether, closed down the Florida studio and laid off all the animators.
Many of whom then got hired by Dreamworks.

Love this film just as much as Treasure Planet! Though, I like that Jim is more relatable.
There’s a scene in the film after Milo gets on the ship. He gets sick and says something about hating carrots. Michael J Fox improved that line as he is actually allergic to carrots.
This film has a lot of interesting facts. Always wanted to see this movie and treasure planet included in Kingdom Hearts, but alas; Disney doesn’t really acknowledge these films developed popularity.

This is honestly one of my favorite Disney films of all time because it does something very different compare to a majority of Disney films do. They're not bad, but sometimes they feel a bit similar with musical numbers and princes and princesses. Here there's action, some mystery around an ancient civilization, the comedy is some of the funniest next to Emperor's New Groove, and the animation and score are just incredible. It's a shame that it didn't performed well when it first came out, but I'm glad there's a cult following as I grew up with this movie.
