    I've never seen this before, but they are way better at "calling their own fouls" than any basketball game I've ever played. Respectable.

      It's a big deal culturally. People will your remember your honor far longer than they do your valor.

    So many leg shots. The combat style has evolved since I stopped playing.

      @Agent_scarecrow I need to be in better shape first. Heavy enough now that sudden movement and stopping can pull the nerves in my spine out of alignment and my legs instantly go numb for like a minute.

      @@joeleek9976 I get ya, some of the heavier guys will use bows, large shields or be a Spearman backing people up.

      @@Agent_scarecrow yeah, I took the fat guy retirement archery package for a while. Even build my own bow. It is SO rewarding to take a stick, carve it into a projectile launcher, and then shoot people with it.

      This is a tournament focused on newer players. Lotta people don't get good garb for awhile since it's either expensive or takes a lotta skills (or friends)

    2:00 the literal definition of meta-gaming. I'm not familiar with the rules of Amtgard but I never thought having a shield strapped on your arm would ever be allowed.

      it's not meta-gaming at all and a totally valid part of the rules of amtgard. read up on the rules if you're not familiar; a shield under a certain size can be strapped to the arm and still be considered wielded. it's pretty much the same idea behind samurai armour having massive shoulder pieces that act as a shield.

    • @Furaxli
      @Furaxli Před měsícem

      @@user-pd7cq7gr3t I understand the idea behind it. Of course it would be advantageous to have a shield or armor strapped on you. However, this seems like such a huge advantage with little to no downside that I would call it meta-gaming, as in trying to use the most efficient tactic available.
      That tactic being to have a shield, covering a large portion of your body, while having two free hands. You might as well have a full armor set and every attack would be invalid.

      @Furaxli oh ok, that's not what metagaming typically means, at least not a definition I've ever heard. Metagaming is generally used in roleplaying games to mean using out of character knowledge to your advantage, like exploiting a monster's weakness on purpose even though the character you're playing wouldn't know about the weakness.
      Anyway, arm shields. The person in the video makes it look easy because I assume he's practiced with it a bunch. With arm strapped shields, they're definitely good for if you're fighting in a shield line and don't have a shield user to defend you or you want to be more self-sufficient, but they have big downsides since they limit the angles you can attack from and are generally cumbersome. If they were strictly better than not having one, everybody would use it.

      @@user-pd7cq7gr3t Even if you don't fight around it, having a half of your left side covered is an undeniable advantage. Of course it's not as good as a shield in your hand, but it is an advantage that seems rather unfair.
      At this point, you might as well have a shield on your lower arm, on your legs, on the right arm too. Just be strapped completely.
      I don't know what the rules are, but it definitely seemed like something he chose to use purely to try to have the most efficient tactic available, aka META gaming.

    • @user-pd7cq7gr3t
      @user-pd7cq7gr3t Před měsícem

      @@Furaxli if it truly was the most efficient tactic then almost everyone would do it. it you look at amtgard battle videos you'll see that the vast majority of players don't have that style of shield when using polearms. There are definitely people here and there, but people aren't avoiding doing it because of "unfairness" since it's available to anyone who makes/buys a shield. They're doing it because there must be a reason it's not as effective as just using the polearm with full mobility. I don't know what that reason is, but I hope to find out sometime because I agree, on paper it definitely seems like a clear advantage. Heck, I made sure my shield could be strapped in that configuration when I made it. If I figure out why most people don't do it then I'll be a happy gal, and if it does work for me, all the better :)
