Isn't game complete when you perform the final input from the controller? It looked like around 38:58 to me... or is it level complete?
It varies from game to game--I was going with the rules for the 100% category as dictated by speedrun.com which determined the end of the run to be when the whistle sounds and Mario can no longer move. It's pretty arbitrary, I know.
I watch this now and all I can think is these games were hard but not very good! Great boss fight but that’s about it!

Why the intentional death?
it lets you be small while keeping the mushroom in the item box which is necessary for the skip in the second half of Hell--if you get hit by munchers or an enemy while big mario the item box contents immediately drop, but if you fall in a pit, you keep whatever is in the item box on your own terms.

Question. Are there any Mario hacks that are actually playable to people who are not Jimmy from The wizard, this dude or arcus? Lol. Like mid range difficulty. Maybe a little harder than Mario 3, but nothing extreme like this?
Check out hacks labelled "standard: hard" on smwcentral.net. I HIGHLY recommend a game with title (I'm not kidding lol) "stick mice in my head then beat my head in with a hammer and let them back out" -- it's an awesome game and fits the difficulty you're looking for.
