    Streaming the games on CZcams was so smart, especially for attracting new or casual fans. With the Big Four North American men's league watching games can be unnecessarily complicated or expensive at times: you have to pay for cable or a streaming subscription, there are regional blackout etc. The live chats on YT among fans during PWHL games have also been great; very friendly and welcoming, really fun.

    • @PWNSdaily
      @PWNSdaily Před 5 měsíci +1

      Absolutely. Between blackouts and different streaming services, watching the NHL is like pulling teeth sometimes. Being able to open youtube and the pwhl is right there, is so nice.

    I'm surprised how good it is. I didn't realize how physical the games are. I've watched four games so far.

    • @tastyneck
      @tastyneck Před 5 měsíci +4

      Yeah, the ability to check makes it less separate from the mens game and really aids in us just watching "normal" adult hockey.

  • @scottrgarland

    The PWHL games have been amazing. It's huge for women's hockey and just the game of hockey in general. Their CZcams channel does have full replay's of the live stream games, and in due time when they have funding to hire more people and this league grows, will come more marketing people, designers, video editors, new jersyes... and identity. They've already made a name for themelves and I see this league succeeding as well.

  • @tastyneck
    @tastyneck Před 5 měsíci +11

    I've really enjoyed the 4-5 games I've watched and, sure, only having 6 teams keeps the talent level high but that's smart on the league's part. Make the product quality rather than diluted. And they were smart by keeping the physicality in the game to flatten the difference with the men's game. Watering down what hockey is, in that aspect, would've been a mistake. And streaming for free on CZcams was also smart (though that was somewhat influenced by the league wanting to get things up and running ASAP, as noted by the teams not having actual names, which I don't mind. This merch will probably be collectors' items and I want them). While tens of thousands watching on YT may not be much compared to established leagues, I think pulling in those numbers consistently and for free helps create a grassroots support system. Add in that many had relatively big crowds to all the above and this league is solid AF, at least to me.

  • @00TheRealTC
    @00TheRealTC Před 5 měsíci +2

    I've enjoyed what I've seen so far. I tuned in to part of a YT stream one evening just to check it out, and the players appear to be skilled, and the crowd looked like they were into it. My home town/province is not among the "Original Six", so I don't have a team to back out of civic loyalty, but Minnesota and Montreal are looking _really_ stellar right now. I look forward to seeing how this league progresses.

    It's time for a really good women's pro hockey league. And it is happening. It's amazing to watch. The streaming on youtube is genius! It pisses me off that the NHL doesn't stream any games. I'm honestly tired of waiting for highlights because I can't watch live games because of out of market blackout BS! Now we just need more PWHL teams and more games. I'm all in.

    I've been a women's hockey fan dating back to 2012. Have season tickets to Boston, and it was incredible sitting in the arena watching a women's game where it truly felt professional. I'm looking around thinking, "this really is a professional hockey game!" You can even feel it when watching the broadcast. Didn't get that same feeling watching previous leagues.

  • @emanuelgonzalez3967

  • @ashvanes484

    I love it. we got tickets to Boston's home opener. I wasn't sure at all what to expect, but why not, support a new women's team, fun outing for the kids, sure. I didn't even know the game was in Lowell until like 2 days before (my husband heard of it first, and got the tickets). Thought we'd be driving to Boston, which is an hour away and parking hassle, but nope, it was close and easy for us.
    We loved it. We are not pro team sports fans, tho my spouse and I have been pretty avid fans in the past, and we tune in for playoffs. Life is busy, our kids are into theater and art, tho we like going to the odd minor league game (including YOUR! MANCHESTER! MONARCHS! gone now, but IYKYK). Every single one of us came out of that building thinking wow, we are hooked. 2 kids who don't play any sports. 2 adults who mainly wanted to see a women's team do well. I have not missed a streamed game since. We are getting to know all the players. But the kicker, my kids want *merch* (this is what they call it, teens), they want to know the standings, they want to go to another game. maybe we'll invite some of their friends next time :)
    I am shocked, in a good way. Thank you PWHL.
    What would I change? so so early, hmm. 1. too specific and not league, haha my first request is better music at Tsongas, it was boring old usual arena music, but MTL and MN do waaaay better here. More "Get this party started" and less "Party rock" or "We will we will rock u" - modern, upbeat, women artists. 2. Please stock jerseys, they are 100% sold out for every team and 1a. sell away jerseys, especially the MTL away jersey which is stunning and I'm not even a MTL fan. 3. Get the fans involved for names and logos, done before next season. 4. they ARE doing it but help us learn about the players via social media and video intros - just double down on this. We wanna form those attachments. Where'd they grow up? Where've they played? help us learn more background. 5. Ottawa has Lando and it's already brilliant. More dogs and cats (edited, I think this goes to generally knowing the players better but I think fans will enjoy pet social media stuff)
    As an aside there have been a lot of brand-new-to-hockey fans in the livestreams. People literally asking about rules, and the teams should expect that, and yes, people will get it through watching and learning but my point is the teams should play to reaching a whole different group than people *already* following the NHL.
    what about the hockey? at this point, no major issues. I like the rules. Love the jailbreak, like the fact that a team gets a point for getting to OT but only 2 for a win. It adds something. Play is fast and they are just building their own chemistry. I think we've had the right amount of spiciness and negotiations. I don't want to see it turn into open ice hits or MMA. just the right level. I will keep thinking about it. A good question for another few weeks from now too.
    on livestream, an intermission specific graphic so people know -score, -how soon play resumes -that the feed is in fact working.

      The pwhl is probably thinking its free promotion.

  • @shaman9
    @shaman9 Před 5 měsíci +6

    If the NHL was smart, they'd move forward with solidarity. It's a way to focus cross-promotion, show inclusivity, and generally build goodwill across the fan base - al of which will increase the talent pool and revenues for both leagues. Here's my suggestions (in ascending order of generating butthurt by men's fans)
    - Have joint charity and community events
    - Have a joint All-star weekend
    - Sell pooled ticket bundles across the leagues
    - Align city teams/logos where possible (does not require matching cities)
    - Align the league names as MNHL and WNHL

    • @tastyneck
      @tastyneck Před 5 měsíci +3

      Speaking of cross promotion, I read that some teams were promoting the league while others weren't. You're right, that it builds goodwill for both leagues so it's weird that some teams wouldn't even tweet out these PWHL games while others did. Seems like an obvious failure by the NHL, at least at this point.

    • @dcl97
      @dcl97 Před 5 měsíci +2

      I don't know, if you do it it has to be done right. The WNBA does a lot of cross promotion but it's just become nothing but an elaborate charity. If the PWHL is to succeed long term it has to succeed on its own merits, not because it's being funded by the men's league as a goodwill gesture.

    First thank you for covering this and doing it in such a well done vid.
    Not too many hockey channels with a main focus on the NHL have mentioned it and that's a pity. (Props to Eck for his regular coverage)
    I totally agree on your comments, the quality of their game has been amazingly good, slightly better than expected i'd dare say. Plus this Minnesota team could teach a thing or two to many a struggling team in the NHL as their level of chemistry in just a few games has been a thing of beauty. I also totally agree on the Highlights, it's the one main thing missing so far that could tremendously help generate and keep engagement. The other thing is team Names and Logos, to help with identity and core culture, but i don't see it as such a big deal for this first season.
    Further down the road I'd love to see them extend relatively quickly to a couple other cities, I know for instance Quebec has been very frustrated with Bettman's stubbornness and they're making a strong push to host a PWHL team there as soon as possible. A Quebec - Montreal rivalry could be great for this young league.

    I've tuned in for the majority of the games and have found it quite enjoyable so far. Witnessing various league firsts adds an extra layer of interest. As a passionate hockey fan, just present some good hockey, and I'm hooked. The challenge with previous female leagues was accessibility; their games were hard to find. The PWHL streaming on CZcams has been fantastic since it allows me to easily catch all their games (thanks to notifications). The point system is actually superior to what the NHL has, and the jailbreak rule for shorthanded goals introduces an intriguing change. The referees have been doing a commendable job, mostly calling blatant infractions like hooking, holding, and interference, while allowing robust body checking (sometimes quite rough) without penalizing it. Anyway, in short I like what I'm seeing so far and hope the league continues to do well.

    hopefully bettman learns a little bit about broadcasting rights and streaming availability from this league. the biggest thing holding the nhl back since 2010 has been game watching availability, im a big bruins fan so i have nesn 360 but i go to school in colorado and I literally CANNOT watch ANY avalanche games unless i buy an altitude sports subscription (which is pointless if u only want hockey) or if i illegally stream the game. so living in colorado, you cannot watch the hometown avs team anywhere on live television without a subscription to a random provider that only gives you nuggets and avs games. make it make sense

    Oh yeah, that's the great thing about hockey - you wear gear and it doesn't matter who's under that gear. Produce or get off the ice.
    I'll share a little secret about girls playing hockey in the 60s and 70s
    Girls got nailed playing hockey because they didn't have gear - they were using their brothers' gear
    they were out there playing pond hockey, Street hockey getting their teeth knocked out. Black eyes from pucks
    Their brothers got to play organized hockey, they didn't get hurt nearly as much as the girls did playing pond in street hockey.
    That's why they formed those powder Puff leagues. Girls were getting seriously hurt, while the boys playing organized hockey weren't suffering those level injuries.
    Got to keep those teeth if you ever want to get yourself a husband! Lol!
    Absolutely agree - they need to put out highlights to get interest.
    wish their schedule was a bit different -it's a lot of hockey to be watching in one season between the nhl, ahl, OHL, IHHL, World Jrs, All stars & Olympics every 4 years, & I keep my eye on local leagues
    and now we have another league?
    I can't think of another pro sport that has SO MANY professional leagues & international events running in one season?
    That's going to be the tricky thing about hockey - there's so many leagues at the same time. Will that increase their viewership or diminish it?
    don't know how to resolve that.
    Tough keeping up with so much hockey!
    They are offering free games now - yet when they get popular they're going to take that away.
    Then we'll see how the viewership goes when they demand $$
    When is anybody going to have time to actually play or coach hockey sitting around watching so much?
    I noticed that the NHL will not allow them to use any acronyms close the NHL
    PWHL sounds silly, and it's a stupid looking logo! needs to be a three-letter acronym
    WHL
    Women's hockey league.
    WHA - women's hockey association
    WLH
    Women's league of hockey
    NHW
    National hockey women
    Four-letter acronyms sound like college

About 10 years ago when I was 15, my Bantam AA team was really good, top 3 in Minnesota, had a record of like 79-3 or something ridiculous like that. We were so good that they wanted to see how we would fair against a pro woman’s team. Ultimately, we were the underdogs, everybody thought we would lose but might possibly be able to hold our own… We literally beat them 19-0. The game was stopped after the 2nd period. Needless to say it never happened again. I can’t bring myself to watch players much worse than myself (who is not even close to the level of men’s D1 college hockey) as a form of entertainment.
