Great video! A good reminder of how much trouble a little grit can cause. I lost a good bore/hone job of a cylinder and a Wiseco piston because of grit that was hiding in the drain plug sump. After that experience now I flush the front and rear drain plug sump with carb cleaner every time. I swear these things are absolute magnets for debris.
I really believed I had it all clean. I was each part a couple times. Just goes to show a clean space is a good space for engine building!!

I so glad I got it running again and yea the paint made it pop!!! Now I’ll see how durable the paint is.
Pitting can be a sign of detonation so check ignition timing if on gas 32° , debris is often found in oil so check there. Lots of places they can hide. If you drove it some debris can get sucked in but I don’t think you drove it yet. Jets are to small to allow any contaminates in through a fuel system that can cause pitting. But if you drive it try an outer where filter over velocity stack or stocking, if going off road. One other thing as far as piston rings clocking them isn’t as important as people think. The rings rotate when running or else they will wear a groove in the wall which you never see. They always rotate so clocking rings is good but know they will always rotate. The ring gap should be like .015” so maybe open that up just to make sure they don’t but up. Love watching your builds bud.
Hello Paul, That’s some very help full Information. The cam card recommends 34degrees so I installed a 2degree timing key to get to 34. Your recommending I enlarge the ring gap? I can do that next time I open the engine. Also there was a comment saying that I need more piston to head clearance my another viewer. Right now it has a .010 head gasket. I can also get a different head gasket to get closer to the .030 they recommend. But honestly besides being rich it’s running good. I have rode it now and it’s got lots of power. @@DIYWilly I sent you a jet set right ? Just check plug color and start from the bottom up. Tune idle with pilot jet and air bleed screw. Then tune main jet at WOT. So ok, Yea .010” is to tight on piston to head clearance. So yea there right by saying you need .030” piston to head clearance. Is your piston at zero deck ? Like true zero, or in the hole or out the hole some ? You want to have .030” piston to head so if out the hole .005” you’ll need a .045” head gasket. But if it’s in the hole some or at true zero a .032” copper head gasket will be fine.
@paulskartslifan4206 Yea you sent a jet kit so that should work good. The piston from what I measured is .002 in the hole. So with a .010 head gasket I would be like .012 piston to head. It’s been running fine and crazy responsive on the throttle but I don’t want it to blow up either. I’ll start shopping head gasket. Thanks Paul for you professional and helpful information!!

You may not have enough piston to head clearance. .030" minimum is recommended. As far as debris, I'm looking at your temporary exhaust that is pointing straight down/up. Flakes could fall out of your muffler. I doubt the ring gaps lining up would have dropped the compression much at all. I would bet on debris under a valve. Hope you checked and relaped them. To tight piston to head clearance and that much compression can spell disaster. I blew two blocks in half before I learned my lesson. Good luck and take care.
Your probably right about the piston to head clearance. Wow I should lapped the valves again. They did look fine but wouldn’t have hurt to refresh the valves. So far it’s been fine and I’ve been riding the bike some with no further problems. Keeping my fingers crossed.. 🤞Thanks for the suggestions and watching!!
Beautiful engine Willy - you always let us know how things work out, even if there are problems along the way. Makes me think over how I put things together, we all try to do a good job - but it's easy to miss some things. Great video again with this build! Now I am thinking - how did you paint that case and what kind of paint. Really looks and sounds good.
Hello flinchbacher, I always try and keep my videos real. If the build go well then fantastic but if they go wrong some how I’ll investigate and try to explain what happened. The paint is Duplicolor semi gloss engine enamel. I first degrease and wash the block, try and sand the surface as best as possible with 220 or 150 sand paper. Preferably 220. Then wash and degrease again. It can never be too clean. You have to keep an eye on the cylinder though you don’t want it to rust. A light coat of oil helps. Make sure the block is dry and paint as per instructions on the can. Try and mask off anywhere you don’t want paint. A Quality paint job is in the detail or prep work. I try to use my heat gun to keep it warm and help the paint to set. I left this one out in the sun for a couple days before reassembling it to make sure the paint was hard. Lastly as the engine warms up it will help cure the paint.. Thanks for watching!!
I've had when porting trapped air in casting cause flaking and chip after heat cycles might be your corporate
Oh yeah that could be wheee the debris came from.
Here's my 2cents; if you ran your mini up and down the street with no filter, the small particles of road debris like sand pebbles,ashalt,gravel etc will fling up from both tires and to small to be seen by you but can get sucked down that velocity stack.
What’s up Lou-eye, I never installed a clutch or chain on the bike yet. The engine only ran in the frame for testing purposes only. Haven’t got to ride it yet. Hopefully soon I’ll see how it does..

Think maybe you had some debris under one of the valves holding it open a little? I’ve seen that in the past.
Yes that was my first idea that something was wrong with the valves but the valves were fine. I triple checked everything this time before assembly. So many possibilities that I may never know for sure.
I like to keep my ring gaps away from the wrist pin and top and bottom of the cylinder. I put the 2 oil rings 180 from each other and the top 2 rings 180 from each other. Does it matter? I don't know! 😂 I hope that gets you all squared away bud!

Coil gap looked huge on front
Hello Jim, yes it does but that was what was recommended by the manufacturer/seller of the coil. Believe me this engine screams!!!

Yes definitely!! I gotta say though it’s fast. Pro too fast for me. I have to lean forward to help keep the front wheel down..😂 Been riding it for a couple days and I’m starting to get used to it. So different from the Briggs. I know you’ve build engines like this but I’m not used to the power. My 224 was my fastest before this one.
@DIYWilly lol they can be a bit much, I'm about 6ft 250 and have ridden on 2 wheels for a long time, I still get surprised from time to time.

Hey man sounds like your having a good day… Yes the only thing I could find that changed other than the debris in the cylinder was the rings. I’ve read where people say they can move as the piston goes up and down but didn’t believe it till now. Still runny strong! I’m going build the exhaust this week and maybe take it for a ride.. @@DIYWilly what were u out in the dirt I literally drove in the rain snow all that I'm really scared to see what that ducar piston I got is looking like lol that's why I gotta decide a back up motor for the meantime so when I pull it off I can still have transportation it's literally my daily driver lol
Oh man I wish I could use mine as a daily driver. You might think the debris came in through the carb but that engine hasn’t gone anywhere. It’s only ran in the driveway. I have to think it came from when i ported the head as I mentioned in the video. Stay safe!!
