This song got me through grad school. I know that’s not such a big thing, but I lived in an underground apartment in northern Illinois and didn’t get a whole lot of sun. I’d sing it to myself while trying to find a parking spot on this massive campus before going in to study in this tepid, unwholesome environment. Today, a year after finishing, my wife and I planted our first vegetable garden in our backyard.
good lad
That's so beautiful :')
Needed this.!!!! Ty for whatever you have done to get where you are.
Haha! School’s for tools. Gardening is for scientists!
❤❤
I need to start a garden
I need to start a garden!
I NEED TO START A GARDEN!!!!
God damn, I feel so empowered by yelling that.
:D yess!
Same, it’s so fun!! I scream it everytime I hear it and I’m alone
That's my favourite part of the song. I feel like she really explored the expressive capabilities of her voice as opposed to every other part of the song.
@@qcrew2938 nobody asked you
Now when I am in the bush screaming I need to build a garden. Except for the ppl who saw me and were like wtf but whatever works
Saw her live in Melbourne last night and when she hollered "I NEED TO START A GARDEN" potting mix started raining from the theatre ceiling, truly magical.
what the..?? for real??
@@janee8973 Yep they filled the confetti launchers with compost
THAT FUXKING ROCKS OMG
@@4863440 that's hilarious.
sounds fucking disgusting lol
"The brink of my existence is essentially a comedy" is such a brilliant line
“I need to start a garden” reminds me of the line “If I had an orchard, I’d work ‘til I’m raw” from Fleet Foxes’ “Helplessness Blues.” The desire to create and grow and make something, to participate in something meaningful, to pull yourself out of your rut and stagnation.
This feels like a song I've loved for years even though I just heard it for the first time two days ago.
Yougimpytube se
FUCKIN SAME
Parts of it reminds me of the band mothers and the oom sha la la part reminds of nothing’s gonna happen by tall dwarfs. There’s also some aspects that remind of something else possibly a pixies song, but I’m not entirely sure.
This made so much sense..
Simple chord progression and melody is probably why.
I'm so glad that music exists.
After 2 years how are you now ? do you still like music?
"She'll never get to eat you like your heart's a pomegranate" is the most sapphic lyric ive ever felt
so true :(
"if you don't go outside
Well nothing's gonna happen"
oof i feel called out
wow it's like she's really going to start a garden
Bruh 🤣
refs for myself
0:25 the milk is sour
1:55 i'm throwing out the milk
2:03 i need to start a garden
haha! good refs 🤣
1:38 "If you don't go outside..." my favorite part personally
The first time I heard this song, it was like something unlocked in my brain. I've always liked music and listening to it, but the lyrics and heart of this piece connected with me like nothing else. It's been a rock for these past two years, and I come back often, whenever I feel like I need to start a garden :')
This is one of the few songs I listen to in order to calm myself down when I'm like panicking or feeling depressed I love it so much
I love you
@@idontknow7262 Thanks
Same
God forbid anyone attempts to stop her from starting that garden
this sounds like a breath of fresh air! i literally started crying when she said i need to start garden. it felt so relieving, honestly!
The milk is sour
I've barely been to college
And I've been doubtful
Of all that I have dreamed of
The brink of my existence essentially is a comedy
The gap in my teeth and all that I can cling to
The milk is sour
Sha la la
Oom oom sha la la
Oom sha la la
Oom oom sha la la
The milk is sour
With olives on my thumbs
And all that I have stuck to and all that I have clung to
I've felt like a dog
This world that I have trusted
Has been over and busted and rusted by an arbitrary sonogram
Sha la la
Oom oom sha la la
Oom sha la la
Oom oom sha la la
Oom sha la la
Oom oom sha la la
Oom sha la la
Oom oom sha la la
The milk is sour
With olives on my thumbs
And I've been out full
Of all that I have dreamed of
The brink of my existence essentially is a comedy
The gap in my teeth and all that I can cling to
The milk is sour
Sha la la
Oom oom sha la la
Oom sha la la
Oom oom sha la la
Oom sha la la
Oom oom sha la la
Oom sha la la
Oom oom sha la la
If you don't go outside
Well nothing's gonna happen
She'll never write her number on a crumpled up napkin
She'll never be your ego
She'll never be a bandit
She'll never get to eat you like your heart's a pomegranate
I'm throwing out the milk
The olives got old
I'm tired of my mind getting heavy with mold
I need to start a garden
I need to start a garden
I need to start a garden
I need to start a garden!
Gonna start a garden in my backyard
I'm gonna start a garden in my backyard
'Cause making this song up is just as hard
'Cause making this song up is just as hard
Oom sha la la
Oom oom sha la la
Oom sha la la
Oom oom sha la la
Oom sha la la
Oom oom sha la la
Sha la la
Sha la la
Sha la la

I've been doubtful* not I've been out full. Thanks tho
She has the raw songwriting talent of a young Leonard Cohen. "I Need to Start a Garden" is an amazing debut LP.
1:38 "If you don't go outside..."
My favorite part of this song, if I had to pick... I fell in love at 15 with someone a decade older than me and *suprise* it turned out very bad for me. I spent 7 years with this person and realized the hard way that sacrificial love isn't love. Been working really hard to toss out my own "sour milk" of trauma responses and learn to approach the world with an analytical eye and good faith. This phrase in particular give me hope and courage. Love didn't hurt, that relationship did, and I deserve loving relationships (with myself and with friends too!). My heart swells every time I hear this song ✨️💚🌱
So obsessed - really relate with her lyrics and she is really inspiring. Love the bug imagery she uses. Voice is so endearing as well. Her delivery is so moving it's hard to put into words. First heard on Huw Stephens!
Such a beautiful song. Hope she releases more music.
honestly i found this song because casey mcquiston put it in a playlist for one of the characters of their book, one last stop, & now it's my emotional support song. i started college almost a month ago, & i have social anxiety & i'm sapphic & i wanna start a fucking garden too. aaaaaa i'm so glad i have this song to get me through my day.
The garden party definitely caught my attention and that’s why I’m here lol
Just saw her live the other night! She played this song towards the end, it was amazing to say the least!!
Ive only just recently started listening to this song, I stumbled upon it at work. It was raining a good bit so I stayed in the bay where it was warm, this popped up on my recomended so I gave it a listen. When she screams "I need to start a garden" it litterally gave me chills. Goosebumbs and a warm face. I loved it so much I played it on repeat for the rest of my shift.
What a beautiful way to describe the journey from youth to adulthood
She is so stressed, too free to have so much responsibility. There's olives on her fingertips. She's clung to so much that only promises happiness. Throw out the sour milk. Start a garden, watch that shit grow. If you don't go outside, well nothing's gonna happen
Haley, this song rocks! Haley, you Rock! Love from St.Louis,Mo
God i already know youre going to get me through senior year and the overbearing urge to just give up
I NEED TO START A GARDEN!!
It got me through treatment multiple times. Nothing better than listening to her while smoking a cigarette. Not even being trusted to use a lighter. Having someone watch you shit, eat, sleep. Something surprisingly poetic about it. Listened to her every single day for months while I was away. She made it all so much easier. Thank you so much.
One of the best songs I've discovered on Spotify so far in 2018, if not the best. Her unique sound and song-writing is refreshing, and I hope and anticipate she's is going to come out with alot more in the future. This is quality music that needs wayyy more attention.
song's almost fours old and I'm just hearing it for the first time. man, you've gotta dig to get the best stuff these days. Delightful!!!
Love you Hayley , this is so refreshing , such an interesting song .
I had my heart broken in Seattle... I didn't have work yet or a place to stay (cos I had just made the move with a girl from Orange County)
I called up a friend from the marine corps who lived in KY so I headed there cos I had a place to stay and he got me a job... I heard this song on Louisvilles independent radio station and gave me hope there's cool people in this state
Daniel Cox best of luck my friend, don't give up. U got this!! U are strong on ur own . Show her u can do it without her and maybe she will realize she fucked up
Fuhki Tandoori thanks pal :)
Daniel Cox I hear you man. Don't stop striving for yourself. I can't.
Louisville is amazing you will love it there.
This song is inspiring on so many levels. I'm not sure how you define art but if this isn't included in your definition that you just don't understand and you're part of the system. I NEED TO START A GARDEN!!!
the song melody and her voice bring me peace. Thank you!
I- Netflix thank you for showing me this 😔🤟

Heard this for the first time today on the radio. Strange, but I like it, she dooby dooby.
This is legitimately amazing
Amazing song. Very relatable! Thanks NPR for exposing great artist
The brink of my existence is essentially a comedy
I heard this on the radio earlier, pencilled it in and looked you up on you tube. Loved it. I will look some more but it's late now. Don't stop.
I absolutely love this song, and I'm currently playing it on repeat. If the rest of the album is anywhere near as good as the single, it'll be one of the best albums of the year. Great music video too. :)
I love this song soooo much, It inspired me to expand my garden this year. Thanks Haley
I never ever ever ever comment on anything anywhere but this time I had to. I absolutely loved this!
I have been waiting forever for this song to appear on CZcams!!! Fell in love with it at her KEXP summer concert. Thank you, thank you, thank youuuu.
First heard it on KEXP and been hooked since

"I'm tired of my mind getting heavy with mold."
Real velvet underground vibes
My garden is growing. ❤
This only reminded me of when I was a toddler
This, she is Amazing! Danke, merci, gracias, wopila you doll!
This is the best music video i have ever seen
Lawd forbid you read this Haley
I saw you wrote this one for a song contest
Dammit if there aren’t plenty of songs out there that lack the sheer volumes you are capable of producing
Fan from GA! By the way lol, some of us have decent taste 🥰 this song got me through a good bit, going back to school to complete my bachelors and so many other complexities
To throw myself into something
To go beyond what’s comfortable and build something for myself, to create something that can grow, to allow myself to not inhibit my intellect beyond what I might not deem to be perfect … and allow myself that growth
Much love!
The perfect song doesn’t exi-
Haley Heynderick: Hold my sour milk-

Who else went & planted a garden right after hearing this hit 🔥
God I want to, but hey at least I watered my indoor plants after hearing it
lovely!
I really need to start a garden!!!!!!!!!!
Just heard this on the radio today and caught it at 1:57 (before the garden part starts). Towards the end of the rant I was like "well then go start your go***mn garden!!"
I know what you are going thru. I’m waitin for my mind to drop after starting my gnome garden.
Karl Sebastian Sollenhag My weed garden is already established, but it takes still couple months before I get to drop my mind and smoke my White Rhino and Nordic Jack bushes.
Rex
My home
is full of garden gnomes.
Lying along the floor
like viscid stones.
One for every mistake
I ever made.
And now
they are building an army
for a justified crusade.
I'm the trophy
of the safari,
said the rabid
gnome knight.
I'm going to suffocate
in my sleep
tonight.
I sail away in seas of doom
My shield is strong and I got no fear
I'm gonna face the enemy soon
The night is cold and the air is clear
The enemy could be anywhere (beware)
The serpent's eyes enlarge with fear
It's all about for those who dare
Thunder! Lighting! Fighting! Heavy Metal in the night!
Garden Gnomes! Are dying! By axes! Bleeding in the burning light!
Face to face with an army from hell
A sudden flash the battle is on
So swing the axe and cast the spell
Kill or be killed - dead and gone
The taste of Metal is the taste of blood
The enemies have got their reward
We buried them in seas of mud
They've felt the rage of my sword
I'm rooting for this song
When the girl i like loves plants:
Me: 2:05
Screaming I need to start a garden because yes
Would love to see a tour with Haley and Mothers
Heard on NPR-Wicked!!
busted my front tooth right before her gig dancing on a friend's shoulders uphill to 'blister in the sun' and when she sang the gap in my teeth my nervous system transcended
So inspired
my girlfriend says you get a bit wild In the middle, me, all I wanna do is listen again, and again, I love your music 🎶
