Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams announces firing of Officer Christopher Meyer, who was involved in a shoplifting incident that received national attention.
That's not enough. This officer and the others involved in this bullying of innocent black civilians need to be arrested and charged with assault and battery under color of authority.
Yeah, they need to treat cops who point guns at people and threaten to kill them when they pose no risk like the criminals they are. Cops also need to stop going to bat for these assholes, they make they rest of your look bad.
Why is everyone in such a frenzy about this officer loosing his job? Yes he was responding to a call but he handled himself based upon his personal feelings not department rules. The family was cooperating the whole time! I respect officers for putting their lives on the line for the public but this type of behavior needs to stop!
They are actually doing the former Police Officer a favor. He doesn't have the temperament, and lacks several other qualities that would make him a good Police Officer. He would have ended up getting somebody hurt/killed including possibly himself.
What???? He "loost his job"???? His drug dog got "lose" and was never found, so he is charged with "loosing" his dog. the cop should not be "loosing" public property. LARN HOUWE TU SCPEL M-O-R-O-N.
Police unions across the country lie about the conduct of their officers. Even when there cameras reveal them abusing their authority. Today everyone carries a cell phone with a camera, yet cops still argue they did nothing wrong. How stupid can they be, knowing that someone is taking a video.
This police chief is finally taking a step in the right direction. I hope she stays on the right track Unfortunately, if she does she'll probably be fired.
You think so. I doubt that. Well I hope not. Cause it would be disturbing to know. That within the highest point of trust and funding. That we give to them. To know they willingly corrupt and abuse. What we work for so hard. The weapon we gave them, to protect us. Now they use it to intimidate us and mock our justice system.
Should have been charged criminally. There's no other way to slice it: you point firearms at unthreatening people and threaten to kill them, you're a criminal.
This doesn't change anything. They need to be in prison. The PHX police kill around 50 citizens every year since 2016 and that number never dropped below 50
Do you even know what Qualified immunity is? It isn't what you have been told it is and so eagerly accepted....It doesn't shield government employees from all law suits..If the officer has done wrong. He can still be sued! Stop watching your liberal TV networks and listening to jail house lawyers...Why don't you do research instead of listening to propaganda...
Now this lady is handle this type of good situation that needs to be handled that some of these bad cops are out of control and they need to put remove or other cops will be put in a bad situation like them.
Thank you, Chief..You have made an inroad into an area that should have been done a LONG TIME AGO. I was expecting suspensions and retraining, and the proverbial slap on the wrist for most all of these cops. with this may there be a spectre of fear that follow all police officers, during the course of their work...In other words: You will be held accountable For your Eff-ups..not just swept under the rug, like most all times before...Maybe THIS will be the process that weeds out all ANGRY "I am the cop, and YOU will do EXACTLY as I say" blowhards.
Awsome. It is not awsome that it happened or that someone is fired. It rocks that we are seeing, hearing, the justice our city deserves. We all make mistakes. However an officer is at a higher standard than a normal citizen. Thank you.
We don't all point guns at pregnant women and toddlers...In fact we're expected to be calm when faced with these savages but they can shoot us just because they don't approve of our tone.
Them she claims that their officers are dispatched 1800 times per day. That's 657,000 dispatches per year. Of the 657,000 dispatches per year, they get 6,570 of those wrong. That's 6,570 too many to get wrong.
Before you comment please watch the video !!!!... It isn't just his language, the guy is cuffed and legs spread and the cop about breaks his leg by sweeping it out from under him...
The thing that bothers me is they're firing one officer. The chief said she learned about the incident from social media videos. How many cops were there? Every single one of them kept their mouths shut and she learned about this the same way the rest of us did. If they really wanted to build trust then every officer there that stayed quite should be fired. I'm not saying they should have or could have stopped the incident but to not bring it to your superiors at the end of the day is unacceptable. Her officers disrespected her and allowed her to be blindsided when the videos came out and apparently shes okay with that
I have to ask the question: do you believe this incident is the only time that these officers have behaved in this manner? And, do you believe the officers involved are the only ones on the force that have done these same things? I happen to believe that the only reason this incident has come to public light is the fact that there is video evidence. I'm not a cop-hater but I've been thinking for a long time that police misconduct is not due to the misbehavior of a few bad cops. It is a cultural thing caused by lack of oversight and accountability. We put cops on the street and give them incredible powers of discretion and protect them from prosecution with the principle of "qualified immunity". When you think about it, most private and public organizations provide extensive oversight to ensure acceptable behavior of their employees. Lacking this oversight, even good people will perform unacceptably; whether it is being rude to clients, fudging expenses, helping themselves to goods without paying. These are relatively minor examples but the longer they are allowed to continue, the greater the abuse. With law enforcement, absent video, most actions involve only eye-witnesses. And most often, it is the police report and testimony that is given credibility. Recently I read of a court case where a judge threw out a charge that was based on the result of a search of a vehicle. The pretext for the search by the police was the claim of an officer that, "I smelled marijuana". The judge commented to the effect that such claims by police were far too frequent to be believed. This may seem like a minor incident but shouldn't we ask ourselves if police officers are routinely fabricating bogus reasons for a search, why wouldn't they (among other things) "adjust" their testimony and/or reports to accomplish what they see is a justifiable end. For that matter, is it unreasonable to assume many officers would plant evidence or physically or psychologically intimidate citizens? My point is that this Chief of Police is being congratulated for her regressive actions in punishing the officers involved. That's a good thing but ... does anyone think this single action of punishment will address what (I believe) is an on-going issue? More likely, this incident is the "tip of the iceberg". Rather, this Chief of Police should be soundly criticized for not going far enough.
I have found There is No accountability for cops whenever it comes to citizens. i could not find any evidence in the police manuals of any audits done on the cops for any behavior involving citizens .I only Investigated ONE police agency
Respectful and courteous are easy. Anybody can have good manners. But those two cops had no restraint. Kudos to the chief for letting them go. You can't risk sinking the department's image over loyalty.
My god chiefy your finally doing your job. Somebody must of reminded you that if you dont charge your corrupt tyrant cops that you would fall under the accomplice to crimes . No more immunity for cops. That means you to chief. We are watchin!!!
Maybe we have one police chief here that's finally waking up and seeing what's going on in the real world,,,I wish we could say that about all off ALL of them !
TRUE!!! Thank you for taking the time to care and take a stand. But right now, too many are asking, who are they serving? It doesn't look like the public, anymore!!! Talking about civil service rights, what about other civil service rights... Besides police officers? The punishment seems really light, from the public's point of view... Not necessarily the paid media point of view, these are not our elected officials, not do they seem to bring to the table, the public's issues or concerns...!!! The public is wondering why officers given psychological evaluations every six months to check if officers are fit for purpose, or a public safety hazard to themselves and others? Are officers checked for contradictions to safety, peace, and protection for the communities they are assigned to serve? For example if an officer agrees with the KKK it other White Supremacist groups, are they still employed there, or sent to minority it mixed neighborhoods?
I agree with how she's handling this incident but she said they 'get it right' 99% of the time. I don't buy that. No police agency gets it right 99% of the time. Arizona, in particular, has a horrible pattern of rights violations.
We had already seen the George Floyd incident so apparently these cops thought it was all alright. There is something wrong with the way police perceive things. We need a different criteria for applicants for the job. I blame the top of the executive branch the mayors.
That all need to be fired because if I would have done that in my job I would have been completely terminated so what gives them the right to be still in the force if they can't even control their actions against human beings
This just plain doggone stupid all the store employee failed to do was to verify if the family purchased the doll, thank God the family was awarded a financial lawsuit and the cop was fired.
That Original video was HORRIBLE! Thank God shots weren't fired. I changed my Winter 🇨🇦 plans from Phoenix to Scottsdale. This apology doesn't change that. ALL those cops for the theft of a doll??? Beyond overkill...This kind of behavior is systemic and the firings will NOT change anything...

Those officers had an extreme amount of anger, to the point they should be ordered to a mental health facility and kept away from society.
