Chevy Silverado 1500 would not shift into park everything else worked fine the problem was just a grommet holding the transmission solenoid under the steering column. It came loose because the nylon bushing disintegrated. This works on many models. Not just a Silverado.
If you subscribe, I would appreciate it!
Part number from user Marty Nowotny
Dorman 924-976 - Zábava
I just took my cover off and checked. I was able to put my vehicle in park!! As a women with not much knowledge about vehicles... This helped tremendously. Thank you
The part is called a shift lock solenoid its about $40 at orielys and you just pull the old one off and pop in the new. Theress a rubber like ring that hold both ends and it deteriorates over time the one i got had a lifetime warranty
You're doing the lord's work my friend
Thank you
My thoughts exactly. I went in to work this morning and my truck would not go in park. I found this video after watching others and had the part off in maybe 10 minutes. O’reilly auto parts is right across the street and they had it in stock. Great video!! Thanks!!
Your 2:36 minute video showed more information then other 5-15 minute videos with the same issues. Thank you for recording it and being precise and to the point.
ejmtz Thanks. I’m just trying to help out.
for everyone recording with a phone always turn it horizontal that way replay will be in Fullscreen instead of a thumbnail. great video thanks
Funny cause watching it on my phone it works just fine
Great video fixed my problem. 2 things though, when removing the bottom plastic dash housing there are 2 metal tension fasteners that may fall under the dash, make sure you don't lose them. Also the grommet problem can be repaired with a good nylon zip tie, not a plastic one, make sure you go around the steering column but NOT around the 3/8" plastic shaft with the ball joint facing the rear of the truck. The zip tie must go around the squarish portion in front after its been snapped back on the ball joint grommet.
...called my go to mechanic and he said probably the shift cable...but after AAA towed my truck to the dealer and I saw your video...I'm pretty certain my problem was as you so nicely demonstrated. Thanks!
My chevy has the same problem..Saved me alot of money and headaches... Thanks so much , You came straight from heaven 🙏
Thank you Karl! Your video was the only one that was helpful in fixing this issue. My work Silverado had the exact same problem🤙🏽
I doubled up 2 zip ties around the column just snug enough to keep it on the knob but lose enough for the lever to glide.
Thanks for the video bro....
Thank you so much for making a video that gets the problem fixed quick and easy.... it worked immediately and was spot on!! 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
Appreciate the video. EXACTLY what just happened to me today on my 2004 Silverado and with this video I was able to get temporarily fixed within 30 minutes. THANK YOU!
When I bought this truck in 2004, I thought it was probably the most technologically advanced thing I’ve ever owned and I never thought that I would be comfortable fixing it; but it’s a truck that a man can fix. Breaks a lot, but a man can fix it.
Great info! Quality of the video didn't impede the point we needed to know one little bit. Thanks for taking the time to share the info!
Thank you. More info in less time than any video out there. You da man.
I had that same problem last night on my 2004 GMC Sierra. Found that after looking under the truck and seeing the connection at the transmission was good. Snapped it back on and it is now working. Going to check with the dealer about parts to make a permanent repair. Thanks for the vidoe!
Mine stopped shifting into park today! Going to try your fix tomorrow. Thank you.
Thanks bud. Left my 2004 Escalade at a restaurant and was able to go back and get it thanks to this video.
Thanx a ton for your video, Karl. I fixed mine in 7-1/2 minutes. I wrapped a double wrap of safety wire around the steering column so that the solenoid can't pop off again. I suppose nylon zip-ties would work just as well.
Thank you for the video...went from freaking out to problem fixed in less than 30 minutes...still have to buy the part but don't have to d/c batt cable and chock wheels everytime I wanna park. Thank you again!!
Wherever you are I just want you to know that you are a hero and a life saver ❤
Glad I could help. I love CZcams!
Life saver...well, money saver. Thank you for posting. We all know the dealer or auto repair wouldve charged $1000 and replace unneeded parts.
Wow! You are describing exactly what I am dealing with.
It happened out of the blue as I stopped to fuel up . When to drive off and Park position just was no longer available
Thanks for the video bud. I just removed the entire solenoid arm. Mine completely froze up. This is a safety switch that reads break pressure before taking out of park.
You're a lifesaver Karl, thanks for posting.
Excellent help, sir! I was able to push that little knob back in to that grommet, even tho it was deteriorated, and zip tied the part of the arm closest to the solenoid to the drive shaft cover...and it’s working perfectly. Thank you! Blessings.
Stephen Matthew Perry how’s it holding up ? That’s what I’m thinking about doing?
Micko Paparo it it’s done right it shouldn’t move
I had my necked strained, holding phone real close to my face, you finally got the flash light in right spot and as the camera started focusing in on the little bolt hanging down that it goes up on to, THE HORN HONKED and i threw my phone about broke my neck looking around and i am sitting at my kitchen table. Scared the shit out of me. Great video.
That’s hilarious!
Cool thanks my 03 suburban got me like that this morning wouldn’t go back in to park I’m like Lord Jesus what now but I got to my destination I played around with the shifter and it finally went back. After watching this helps me to know what needs to be done
Thank you, I was first thinking I needed a new switch. I saw your video and the lightbulb went off.
This video saved me so much time fixing my truck at a time in my life where I cant find any time. Thank you so much
Glad I could help. I drove around like that for about 4 days. I had to disconnect my battery so I could start it the next day. If you can, help me out by subscribing.
Aloha from Hawaii! My 05 Silverado wouldn't go into park..watched your video...BAMMM!!! Clipped and zip tied solenoid back on nubby...PERFECT!! Thank you soooo much for posting that..#LIFESAVER
This video saved my butt! I've got a Chevy express van with the same part and same issue. I zipp tied it for now but you helpped a lot man thank you!
EveryBody here Loves you for the Tips . Thanks Man !!!! I included
Can't thankyou enough, I'm so lucky I found your video before having to watch others that were not correct.
Thank you! Just helped me fix my sons truck and save a trip to a mechanic.👍👍
Thank you!!!! This just happened to me and I checked and that’s exactly what it was. You saved me a ton of money bro. Thanks 👍👏👏👏👏
Thanks for the video! Same thing on my 05 Silverado. Had it figured out in a few minutes once I got to the house. From reading the other comments I found the part is called a shift interlock solenoid looks like $35-40 at autozone. I'll see about picking one up tomorrow and hopefully get it replaced. I found the part and have posted a video on how to replace the part. Search: 05 Chevy Silverado won't shift into park
Is it on the same place ?
It barely happen to me
Please help 😢
This just happened to me 1999 gmc k3500 thank you so much
Thanks for the video. I popped off the front panel and played around with it. Don't know what I did, but it's working. Thanks.
Thank you for your video helped me diagnose quickly and be back on the road. Truely thank you very much!!!! I just used zip ties to hold it to the column so i could never pop out again.
Thanks for the very informative video, it was just what I needed. This was the only video I found that actually helped, all others seemed to guess that the cable was the problem. Very easy repair, pop off upper dash bezel, remove two 7mm scews to remove lower plastic, then four 10mm nuts to remove metal plate. Part was $35 from Amazon as of Dec 2019. Literally less than 30 minute job. 2003 Silverado
I'm having that problem now. Can you tell me the name of the part you bought from AutoZone? Thanks

Thank you very much sir! I shall start here. Appreciate you thinking of others who may have this issue down the road.
Glad I could help
Wow that is exactly what's going on with my 2004 chevy tahoe. I took it to several mechanics yesterday. One guess told me $600 bucks to fix it. If I play with it I can get it to back in park. I'm going to try and get it fixed today. Thank you for the heads up at least I know what I'm looking for👍
Did u
Broooo.!!!! fLucking awesome! Thank you. I was puzzled on this issue sick of having to do the N and parking brake battery disconnect crap. Great stuff.!!

Besides having a great name, you are THE man Karl! Thank you so much for taking the time and putting this video on here for us. Saved me (and I’m sure others) a lot of money, time, and heart ache.
No shit, my hats off to Karl. I hate working on car in the best of time.
It was 106 degree yesterday here in Texas,. They say the barbed wire fence thats down between Texas and Hell will be repaired and back in place soon. I can hardly wait
Ty mine is doing exact same thing and didn't think was shift cable cause it was sounding like when was able to finally get it to jam in park that the noise was somewhere under dash and now I know what to look for
This was the problem with my gmc not going into park. Thank you for the video!’
Glad you found it!
THANK YOU!! My husband was acting defeated...like it was all over with but the crying...until I said "Did you Google it?" Sure enough your video was the first one and we have now fixed it!!
I’m so glad y’all fixed it. Your comment made it worth it to me to make this video!
Dead on what happened with my Silverado. Thx for the video. Probably saved me a thousand!
Couldn't find a grommet to replace, but the whole assembly was only 40 bucks.
This was the problem and we found it thanks to your video!
Thanks for the video brother. Exactly what was wrong with mine as well.
Thanks for the help, recently lent my brother my truck and he gave it it back with like 5 major problems, might be because it’s a 1997 but still
Just happened to me today. I had everything apart to only find out the spring in the steering column shifter broke. It was jamming and not letting it go all the way to park. I tore it apart and the small part of the spring fell out. I put it back together and it works fine now. Just saved myself $260.00. Everything else looked good. This video helped me to diagnose the problem thou. But eventually I'll have to replace it.
I turned my truck off while gear is in reverse . what or how do i turn my truck back on. ? Or what do I do next ?
Thank you very much for your comment brother God bless you I just figured out what's wrong with my truck I should be able to fix it myself you're a lifesaver thanks again
Good job. You didn't tell us we need this and that. I hate it when they tell me what tools I need. If I wasn't that smart I wouldn't be messing with it. Thanks. I knew it was simple. Nothing wrong with your video.
Thank you for your video. It was helpful and now I know how and what to fix.
I just did exactly what you said in this video and fixed my truck! I couldn’t get the metal plate off, as I didn’t have the specific tool required to remove that, but thought outside the box. I used my flashlight on my phone and grill skewers to reach inside and finagle the piece back on where it slipped off. As soon as I did that, I was able to put truck in park. Thank you!
My 2004 just did this to me today. Thank you so much.
Mine today like what the actual F they are all going to fail soon
Thanks man 👍👍👍👍👍👍 and thanks for getting straight to the point too. Grate video.......it just happened to me this morning
Mine just started doing the same thing...thanks for the video I suspected it was in the column or dash.

What is that part called?
94,999 Views! Thanks for putting this up Karl. I'm headed to town to see if I can quick fix mine before work. It left my wife sitting at the grocery store yesterday. Worked fine on the way to town. Now won't shift out of park.
Ben Miller . Yep seems like Chevrolet might have a problem with that part, don’t you think?😃
@@crystalmielke1499 mines a 2006 so I'm pretty sure it's gone as long as it was designed to go. How did Karl get 300k+ Mike's out of his? Karl?
Ben Miller . This is Karl. I don’t know why it’s lasted this long but now it has 332,000 or so!
Thanks for the solution. This had me a little puzzled.
Today's I have same issue silverado 1500.. I applied same fix.. thank for postings the video
Many thanks to you sir, find the issue with your video!
You just saved my ass. I have a Chevy express van. It’s the same set up
Glad I could help. It’s only a temporary fix. Check the part number in the video. Thanks for the subscribe!
If you put a folded piece of duct tape in between the sensor cup and the knob on the steering column it’ll hold the sensor in place. For added security you can place 2 zip ties together around the column and the sensor snug but not tight. Just to the point where it won’t pop back out of place. Back on the road for 5 cents instead of $64
Yooo thanks man I just got stuck in Walmart because my truck wouldn’t start because it wouldn’t go into park and this video fixed it thanks for getting me out of this sticky situation 😅
Neutral should work too

Thank you. 5 uears since this video and it helped me tonight. I just took the part off 😅 it works not sure what the lart is even called to replace it.
One user posted the part number and I put it in the description.
You are a wonderful person. Thanks for sharing!!! I just fixed exact same problem. I raised my steering wheel, shoved a pen light under it so I could see the problem. Stuck my hand under the back side and snapped it back into place without pulling anything apart. I recommend people to watch your video to know what they are looking for.
Jeramy Ellis you should zip tie it to the steering column because it’s going to pop off again. Thanks for the cool comment!👍
@@crystalmielke1499 when I get a chance I'm going to fix it correctly
