Have you got any pics or dimensiins for you bowl set up. I watched you ther one about it and saw you had a hole in the bottom. Do you nee that hile as well as the factory air vents as well or did you block them off? Thanks best design ive come across
Hi mate, I don’t have any dimensions as I just free style all my builds. Yes, I blocked the original wood fire intake holes as I wanted all air to be forced to enter from the hole in the bowl from the base of the heater
Happy to share. This has made things so easy for me now as old oil is now a way of keeping warm and it burns very clean. When using wood I also have another mod that allows me to cook in there too. Its awesome, heat, beer and ability to cook all in the shed....
Do you get much burnt oil smell outside, I live in a subdivision but we aren’t jammed in real tight, I’m just thinking if the neighbours would jump up and down with the smell
Matty’s Workshop once it’s set right it’s clean, no smell or smoke outside at all. Having said that, it can smoke a bit if the oil/air ratio is wrong. Also the odd time it does that is no problem for me as I don’t have neighbours close by. If your neighbours are close it will need to be set up properly. Check my build video to see the set up and how it burns. I’ve tuned a bit since then and it’s great. Also for me it’s to get rid of old oil, I have wood available whenever I need it, so again it might not be ideal if others are close by if u intend to use right through winter, care will be needed.
Hi mate, sometimes, seems to depend on the oil I’m burning. Eg cheaper engine oil burns pretty well, for some reason one time I burnt used BMW performance oil that seem to leave a fair amount of residue. I clean that tube out every now and then but it burns for quite a few hours before there’s any issue. The early sign it needs cleaning is when I see or smell burnt oil coming from the funnel.
Hi mate, I do have a 6 inch flue, but since tuning it I can produce the heat I want with a clean burn. I think going bigger would just allow even more heat, but in my case I don't need to push it any harder...
Yes, I maintained the standard baffle just under the outlet flue. The only thing I did was upgrade that baffle plate to 10mm to provide more of a heat sink. Flue is around 3.5 metres high. If you have smoke it sounds like you need to add more air.
I built a waste oil heater according to set of plans many years ago - drip oil type similiar to this. It worked great as for lots of heating but it produced lots of sooty ash out of chimney pipe. How did you resolve this issue?
@@raybin6873 Hmmm, are you burning too rich? DO you have any smoke coming out of the flue? Mine doesn't have any visible smoke from the flue. I've burnt oil a number of times and so far no problem...I did fine tune the mixture to get it right and after that its been great. Perhaps you need to check the oil/fuel mix? The other thing I did was put an old disc on top of the pan as it helps it burn better, maybe thats another option for you.
@@Mezzmoengineering Oil /fuel mix? We burned only waste oil. It was a drip in a cast iron pan design. We tried many differing adjustments - burning very hot or cooler....couldn't get sooty fluffy smoke under control. I remember walking outside of shop and seeing black stuff floating everywhere!
@@raybin6873 Hi mate, sorry I meant air/fuel ratio. Yes, you're burning oil but its mixing with air. Sounds like you have too much oil going in and not enough air. This will cause your issue. I think you need more air in the mix. More oil without adjusting air won't change anything other than probably just more soot.
Works perfect man !!
Good idea now that winter is on it's way plus get rid of the old oil
It's actually easier than wood as once its set you just enjoy the heat. No topping up like wood....

Brilliant idea, I’ll be checking out that video again, thanks mate

Probably be my luck the wind would change as soon as I fired it up and not quite tuned in right and the neighbours back door would be open 😉
Do you ever have issues with the feed pipe coking up?

Just wondering if you have a 6" flue if a 6" air intake might work better?

Ive a similar burner setup using a old gas cylinder but having abit of issue with smoke. Is there a baffle before your flue and how long is your flue.

How does the smoke look like outside?
Nice build by the way.
There's a little smoke at start up but once heated up its clean. I'll take another video sometime soon showing this.
@@Mezzmoengineering nice, I just saw your new video, looks good.

Hi Ray, I haven’t had any problem so far, I just clean the tray out as that’s where all the residual rubbish forms
@@Mezzmoengineering That's interesting....exhaust flue pipes filled up with lots of "fluffy" black soot after one day's operation with our heater.

Also can you do a video on the burner itself thanks
I show the burner design in one of the first build videos. It’s fairly straight forward, just takes a bit of fiddling to get the air fuel ratio right
