Biggest issue is due to the world shutdown several years ago. Once companies were producing again, there was demand for goods that were ordered prior to, during, and after the shutdown. Quality of materials and workmanship was and still is cut to meet those demands.

Gun manufacturers count on people not using their firearms. So many buy a gun then buy all kinds of attachments, play with it, and stick it in the closet\safe. Especially with semi auto rifles. Manufacturers figure it only needs to last a few hundred rounds. Wrong. Especially pistols. No firearm should fall apart, not feed, or fail to fire, ever. People's lives can depend on the firearm.

Such a very true statement. I recall many years ago a gun shop owner mentioning that many of the customers would spend on a top quality firearm and rarely ever practice with it. Basically, an expensive investment to just sit on a shelf in a closet.

It’s not new. I inherited a Remington 7400 in .30~06. It shot well. It had been fired only a few times a year for deer and elk. I am not sure when it was made, maybe 1970. I disassembled it (pro tip: do NOT take the trigger group apart.) I was amazed at how cheap the materials were and how rough the machining was. I did a little research and found what you said: the manufacturer assumed it would only be fired maybe five times a year. I have a Winchester .308 and did not need this rifle, so I gave it to a young man who is an avid hunter. I did warn him it was not a military firearm and basically to sight it in and go hunting each year.

Interesting video. In the last year I've made two handgun purchases: a 3" Colt Python and a 3" Ruger LCRx (22 Mag). Within weeks of ownership both of these revolvers had to be returned to the factory for major malfunctions. As of this writing they are still there. The Colt's cylinder locked up after less than 1000 rounds of 38 Special ammo. It's been at Colt for two months now and apparently it's considered in bad form to inquire about its repair status. The Ruger's cylinder was seriously binding on the crane; enough so it affected the double-action trigger pull among other things. I've been a revolver shooter for 60 years or so. Free translation: I'm not new to revolver failure modes but what are the odds of buying two different revolvers and having to return both of them so quickly?

The mossberg most likely has an issue with the interface between the trigger bar and the firing pin block. It is a pretty common issue in striker fired pistols. The trigger bar rather than making contact and lifting the block out of the way is falling off to the side thus resulting in a click no bang. This can be resolved via a thicker trigger bar (mossberg probably doesn’t offer) or bending the current one over a bit to have better contact.

I've always been weary of the critical duty ammo. It does have good performance. But the idea of a rubber tip contacting a feed ramp seems like an unnecessary risk to reliable feeding. Especially in guns with steeper feed ramps.
The XTP is still the best hornady defensive ammo IMO. The small hollow point and short OAL of the projectile makes it feed better than any other JHP. Its also cheap. Ive ran over 3,000 of them without a single failure to feed in modern and old guns.

The only 9mm Luger pistols I've ever handled that were less than 100% reliable were Beretta 92FS rentals (7 FTF malfunctions in 250 rounds), and my old SIG Sauer P229 M11-A1 (3 FTE malfunctions during my first shooting session with it). The SIG went to SIG Sauer in Massachusetts for warranty service - it came back to me with a new extractor and stronger extractor spring and in the ten years since has never malfunctioned again, through several thousand rounds.
All of my .357 SIG, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP pistols have always run flawlessly.
I've owned two 10mm Auto pistols. A Glock 20SF Gen3, and a S&W M&P 10mm M2.0 4.6". My G20SF proved to be a veritable jam-o-matic (both FTF and FTE issues). I took it to a local gunsmith who told me it was "a lemon" and recommended I send it back to Glock, which I did. Glock C.S. told me they couldn't duplicate my malfunctions, said it was in spec, claimed to "service" it, and returned it to me. It is / was the single most unreliable firearm I've ever owned, thus it became a safe queen for years.
My M&P 10mm Auto had one malfunction (a FTF) out of 216 rounds fired during my first shooting session with it in mid May 2022. It was very undersprung from the factory (both the RSA and the magazine springs). In late May 2022 I replaced the weak OEM stock factory 17# RSA with a Wolff Gunsprings solid stainless steel guide rod and an uncaptured 24# recoil spring, and I replaced the soft OEM stock factory magazine springs with longer stronger 11-coil magazine springs from Springer Precision. Now, almost two years and 2,100+ 10mm Auto rounds later my M&P has been 100% flawless.
My Gen3 Glock 20SF has been permanently retired and is history.
    Good things! 👍

I feel your pain, SPN. I wanted to like the LCP 1 so much, but mine is incredibly finnicky and can't be trusted after just a few hundred rounds. I saw recently that Ruger has put a much larger extractor on the LCP 1s produced today. My G2C has never had any issues at all, probably after 600 rounds, but I can only hope it lasts. Very nice pistol (although the finish on the slide is trash). I know a few people who have had problems with SIG, Ruger, S&W revolvers, etc. within the last few years. It's just sad, not that they have issues, but that they're not duly recalled and fixed, and I mean every single one of them. Unreliable handguns are inexcusable, and I don't care how much they cost. Most of the time, the pistols sent back in are "fixed" but still unreliable upon return. Customers give up and just end up setting them aside; can't sell them to anyone in good faith.

I disagree. The guns I've shot were not reliable before DEI, 2020, etc.
Gun companies count on the fact people don't shoot their guns.
Ive had bad Glock mag followers in < 500 rounds.
I've sent 7 out of 14 of the Ruger semi-autos back because they malfunction out of the box. They always came back repaired.
I've sent Taurus back more than once.

The only brand I’ve had any problems with in the last 20 years is S&W 637 and an S&W M&P9 first Gen both were notorious for light strikes and failure to fire, but the worst was a S&W CSX I got about 5 months ago really wanted to love this gun but it was the biggest piece of shit firearm I ever owned. Failure to feed, failure to eject, light primer strikes then on one of my better mags I felt something hit my hat and looked and there was no rear sight on my CSX. Took it back to the shop I bought it and got a credit and they sent it back to S&W I hope to be melted down. But put the credit towards a HK VP9SK and couldn’t be happier with that pistol it’s quickly becoming my carry gun on the rare days I don’t carry my Ruger SP101 in 327, but S&W is a no go brand for me now.

Sure, get some better sights or a magwell or a light but once u start swapping out internals for aftermarket parts all the tolerances go out the window. If u want to tinker with some something you’re not gonna carry that’s cool. I’m not opposed to it but, if you’re not a competition shooter why are u fucking with all the parts that make the gun operate? I just don’t understand it

But there's a big misconception. Those people tend to have to be even more qualified because they're already scrutinized for being DEI and under a microscope. In general, in order to really know how reliable a gun is, one has to collect data, run the numbers, etc. A sample of one does not a data point make and internet is full of shit. I already see idiotic comments for this video. In general, the more you shoot a gun, the more reliability issues you will have. I'll give an example of one, in the past, I shot thousands of rounds through my Sig M11A1, and it had hard failure at just over 6000 rounds when the original recoil spring snapped in half, the gun was hard down. Sig told me they recommend changing the recoil spring every 3000 rounds. Lasted twice that, so that was nice.
In addition, just because a manufacturer has had a checkered past, doesn't mean the current guns produced are of poor quality or reliability. Taurus might be a good example, their new GX4's have been great in my collection, my original GX4 has over 2000 trouble free rounds. However, until data is collected, the numbers are crunched, all I can say is, my GX4's are solid. I've bought well over one hundred handguns in the last fourteen years, mostly Glocks and Sigs, and I've had the most issues with Glocks and Sigs. My guess is being the larger sample of guns being those two brands, I have seen more issues with those brands. A gun range might be a good place to see how well a certain gun performs over time. I was shooting in Prescott, AZ years ago, rented a Gen 3 G19. The gun went hard down and I brought it out to the counter and said, this G19 broke. He said impossible, Glocks don't break. I simply said, this one did. Never found out why, I was visiting a friend and we went shooting. However, I would not say Glocks are unreliable, but guns, Glocks included, are never 100% reliable when shot enough.

  • @_droid

Some of it, maybe all of it, can be traced back to supply chain issues. Vendors sneaking in low quality materials (recycled steel, etc). Even high quality manufacturers get caught out because of their subcontractors or vendors pulling tricks. Combined with the fact that a lot of knowledge and skill for manufacturing has been lost due to offshoring. Hardly anyone knows how to make high quality steel any more or engineer proper designs. I have friends and family that work in aerospace and military manufacturing and it's a huge problem. All materials at every level have to be inspected, sample tested, x-rayed, etc. to verify that it meets its specifications. Trust is gone.

Overthinking it bro. And leaving out important details. Especially about the macro, those mags compress weird and the springs go bad faster than their wider cousins. The condition of the weapon also matters. You can minimize failures by keeping your weapon wet.
    -
Also 1 failure in 1000 is wildly good. For comparison, the CZ p01 suffered 1 stoppage per 500 rounds.
