  • It's been five years since legendary Yankee Stadium was demolished after serving as home to the New York Yankees for 85 years. National Geographic was there throughout the demolition process. This clip includes a condensed version of the piece-by-piece destruction. Authorities could not "blow up" the stadium because of its close proximity to residences and active rail lines. The full demolition took over a year.

      It was like tearing down the St. Peter's Basilica of baseball. Even as a Cardinals fan, I still admit this (granted, Roger Hornsby tagged out Babe Ruth to win our first World Series there).
      It was criminal. A crime against baseball, itself.

      Oh baloney! The old park was renovated and made into a charmless version of its original self. No huge loss, considering the hallowed grounds remain as well-kept recreational fields for local Bronx residents.

      @@chasbodaniels1744 I remember hearing that the mid 70’s renovation did more harm than good as well.

    • @chasbodaniels1744
      @chasbodaniels1744 Před rokem

      @@RB01.10 Fond memories of the original stadium during the early to mid 1960’s. In the concourses and concession areas it looked old but that was part of the “magical aura”! Maris, Mantle, Tresh, Pepitone, Yogi, Richardson, Kubek - those were the heroes - even if one of the family had to sit with a steel support beam in front of them occasionally.
      The renovation brought the facility into the 1970’s, which was an embarrassingly cheesy decade for architecture (also clothing and hairstyles). The great teams of 76-80 made the experience electric, so the stadium didn’t matter much.
      When the current facility opened across the street in 2009, I was awed AND disappointed! It looks like a freaking cathedral as you approach on foot from the south, but so many interior features (Monument Park, the concession areas etc.) seemed laughably badly thought out.
      It took another two years for them to rectify, and the House That Jeter Built is a great (but obscenely expensive) game day experience now.

      There was already a park across the street where they built the new one. Only this park is smaller. It's a real shame that the politicians suck up to the yankees. The new yankee stadium is worse, the seats are more expensive and further from the field, thanks to the luxury suites that they shoved in between the lower and upper deck. The Yankees were already the richest team in baseball, this new stadium will make them even richer.

    Once they took the seating decks off, you could see how old Yankee stadium was essentially a narrow, long, curved building which supported all of the seating decks. (Plus the outfield seats, set up much the same on a smaller scale.

I have an original seat that were ripped out after the 1973 season and sold for $5 each. It consists of wooden slats bolted onto cast iron frame. It weights quite bit. He also tried to pawn off on Yankee fans, by selling dirt from the infield in little plastic cubes. I thought this guy has to be kidding. The Yes network was advertising for this guy for a few years. But bottom line, how do you destroy a sports cathedral like Old Yankee Stadium. Today’s ballpark isn’t Yankee Stadium, it’s George Steinbrenner Stadium. Anyway to this Yankee fan it is.

    I’m from Houston. Even though we have Minute Maid Park, our city just can’t let go of the Astrodome. It’s strange to think about: the Astrodome has so many milestones, but they’re only appreciated here (and I guess New Orleans, “thanks” to Katrina). Yankee Stadium was different. It was a castle on a hill, a stadium revered throughout the world. Which makes its destruction all the more shocking. I’m lucky enough to have gone to a game in 2007, and go inside the Astrodome in 2006. But this is a piece of history that didn’t need to be taken out. I just hope I can go to Wrigley and Fenway before it’s too late.

    They had to tear it down one day. You can only renovate so many times. My first time was in '67 as a 10 year-old, and it was an old stadium then. The new stadium looks like a helluva place, except for that monstrosity looking centerfield thingy and the fact that some seats are over-priced and empty looking.

    Tbh, it really hurts me to see the Old Yankee Stadium gone by demolition. We could've at least protest to stop the demolition on Old Yankee Stadium.... But they absolutely demolished it and it's gone. If i would've become a Yankees fan as a little kid and would've known about the Old Yankee Stadium, i could've been there but it's too late. The only thing i could imagine was going to the park were the Old Yankee Stadium was before and sits there pretending that I'm at the Old Yankee Stadium cheering for Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Derek Jeter, and others :(
