    You can learn the easy way, or the hard way. I learnt the hard way. It's all very well to urge caution, but cooking that close to your flysheet can end badly, as it did for me in Knoydart some years back. It's astonishing how quickly a canister-top stove can transform itself into a gas-powered blowtorch that consumes your tent in seconds.
    That gizmo for your pot is called a trivet, by the way.

An idea you mentioned about the powdered egg, would you consider a series where you prepare and cook your meals at home then dehydrate them yourself and then review them when you're on a wild camp?

    Back in the early 1990's for 3 years I used to camp most weekends and every holiday on the Long Mynd in all weathers to save the money the gliding club bunk house would have cost helping to pay my flying fees. I should have offered to test equipment because I was camping at least 100 nights a year and tents rarely lasted more than a year up on those hills. Your video brings back many happy memories of time spent in a tent on the gem that is the Long Mynd.

    Got a windburner and first thing I did was dig out a spare sock to put the gas canister and stove to stop it rattling. Other than that can’t fault it, the pot is 1l so is big enough for wet MREs and filling flasks for the 2nd day in winter. Had to ditch the measuring cup though as it kept getting stuck on the base

    Good video Paul. I've had a Scarp 1 since 2009 and have had many Munro summit camps in Scotland including winter with winds up to 58 mph on Creag Meagaidh. I bought the Cross poles with the tent initially but found they were better in the snow and didn't make much difference in windy conditions. I changed the guys to 3mm dyneema to prevent slippage. Not sure if the updates to the Scarp over the years have slightly affected its ability in the wind but the older version I have is much more taught and less flappy in much stronger winds than you experienced . Hope you enjoy the Scarp 😊

      @PaulMessner  Před 2 lety +1

    • @CraigCameron
      @CraigCameron Před 2 lety

      @@PaulMessner sounds like a plan! I've made a few mods over the years but I've had the Scarp so long I've forgotten some of them 😊 I remember swapping the main pole for a 9mm Hilleberg equivalent a few years ago but I think the current version has a 9mm pole as standard anyway. It's an excellent tent and you'll be able to get it set up the way you like it. I never head out specifically to camp in wild conditions but sometimes the forecasts are very inaccurate and it's coped very well in very windy conditions on summits all over Scotland. I only take the cross poles if snow is forecast.

    I like the longer videos personally, when it's relevant. I suppose a 50 minute video on your favourite hiking boots would feel excessive, but when there's content to be put in the video, I'd always say put it in. I mostly watch videos whilst I'm working, they play on the TV like a bit of background entertainment. I'll rewind or pause when required, but a longer video always feels better to me.

    Hi Paul - greetings from the Midlands. 'Callow Hill' - to me that's the site of one of the collieries that Maggie scuppered nr Swadlincote in teh 80s, S Derbys but - to digress.
    Now that looks a tent that might defy the wind better.
    Terra Nova posh gloves between £35 and £60+ - THEY OUGHT TO DO YOUR JOBS FOR YOU! They cost more than some of my tents. My kid gloves with the lining stripped out cost me a fiver and keep the wind and cold off sufficient for all my needs. I didn't see you as a 'brands' person. Their Meridian gloves AT NINETY POUNDS could buy a host of camping kit! YOU COULD ONCE GET A DECENT PAIR OF HIKING BOOTS FOR THAT! I know it's not you but somebody is kidding somebody. My Alkita M/cycle gloves cost 60% less than that and have to deal with a lot more weather and several other (extreme) events.
    I don't think I'll be taking up the Terra Nova discount business discounts. But thanks all the same.
    Sleeping kit - I'll stick to my usual. In less than warm weather I use a silver survival blanket (cheap as chips used to be) + foam mat + Trad full-length Thermarest self-inflating mattress with a basic sleeping bag to suit the season,
    Rarely had a bad night's sleep. Silver blanket unnecessary in hot weather when ground is warm.
    I like the way that you attach spreaders underneath the stove to give it more stability. Truly good sense, especially in a confined environment. My Trangia avoids those problems.
    Brilliant pack mods.
    OH NO! STEAK AGAIN! See my other comments.
    As for wind. the look and sound of it was more like Force 4-5 - it was certainly no breeze. Correction - more like 5-6!
    Last comment - Glenfidich is a malt. Try Glen Moray if you can get it - usually slightly cheaper and it will surprise you.
    All best wishes to you , bro',and despite some of my comments, Count me as a 'fan'.
    Paul

    I found the longer format great for getting a real feel for being there. Excellent for a newby like me.
    And being new to backpacking, it would be “gravy” if you included a kit list at the end. Loving all your content Paul. Many thanks 👍

    Nice video Paul, love the Long Mynd area. Longer videos are fine with me, enjoy watching them. Look forward to your next trip.

    Love it in the Shropshire Hills, the ponies are quite used to people but it's best to let them come to you. I've recently bought the bigger MSR spider to increase stability, not tried it on a camp yet but feels well made and stable.

    Great vid Paul. Very much enjoyed the longer format. I think a few of these every now and then would be spot on.

    It’s about time you came to South Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿. Stay away from Pen Y Fan and you won’t see a soul! Garreg Las is a must for a future wildcamp! Loving the videos as usual, no matter how long! 👍🏻

      Been a few times there. Actually camped Pen Y Fan. Will surely head that way again this year but a few other spots to visit first

    Watching as you go, I think the cross poles really useful generally to give space abd separation. Some have said OK without... let's see as video processes.
    I don't think Chris Townsend used them much though ... think I'll need to give mine another outing this year

      They help with the flapping but the tent is strong without. Its a case of do you want to save 400g
