Origin of the Name - Lizard Skins: "There were two original founders, myself and Lance Larson. Lance sold out to me in 2001. Lance's brother was working on a project for a college class that involved creating a name and a logo for a company. He came up with the name Lizard Skins and the original yin and yang style logo. He didn't have any actual company in mind when he created the name and logo he just thought it would be a cool name and catchy logo. Not sure how well he did on the assignment but I would give him an "A" if I were the teacher. After about one year, Lance asked if he could use the name and logo for a company. Lance's brother said 'sure'."
Company Beginnings: "It was extremely small. When we started, we could fit the entire business on one table. Our first ad was a twelfth page for Mountain Bike Action magazine. We had to race to FedEx to get it sent out and barely met the deadline for it. We immediately started receiving calls from the ad before we were even really ready to take them. If we had missed that ad deadline, Lizard Skins might have never taken off."

I did it WITHOUT stretching it, and it started to come up and separate in the curves after a while. I unwrapped it, and re-wrapped it tight stretching slightly, and never had a problem after. I always stretch it just slightly in the curves around the drops. I love the feel if this on my bars.
Watch Calvin Jones of Park Tool wrap a bar. He’s a pro and a funny guy. Also explains some fancy ways to finish a bar.
See Calvin Jones's (from Park) method for taping. It results in the preferred rotation of tape on the top section and less bulky overlap around the levers than the figure 8 method. And BTW, DSP tape really is THE BEST! --Bicycle Bob
Thanks for putting this up. It came in handy doing my first tape job. My new orange Lizard Skins are sweet.
Just fitted some of your tape and it’s awesome. Thank you!
Is it weird that I like how the tape sounds as he’s applying it.....?
asmr dude :)
No
3:10 😂
I love all the sounds in this video. lol relaxing
I just put new Lizard Skins tape today. First time using it. Feels pretty good. Was super impressed with the finishing tape. Has to be the best finishing tape I’ve ever used.
Why would you do a figure 8 if you already have the covering strip????
bakerfly305 I don't do a figure of eight when wrapping my bars, and I don't use the clamp covering strip either. I just take my time until I get it right, even if that means unwrapping back a few turns occasionally and going over again. Tension keeps the tape in place and electrical tape at the finish.
Admittedly, the finishing strips do give a nice cover at the end. 👍
have this on 44cm SLK's, love it. to those of you complaining about it not being smooth. try this tape. this is what it does. it also is some of the more comfortable and grippy tape you can get.
very clear installations instruction :-))
after having wrappd a couple of handlebars "do not stretch" translates to "tears way too easily" to me.
This video was very informative. Thank you.
you dont need the lever strip if you figure 8, also its better to wrap the tops the other way, more ppl tend to throttle back not forward on the tops
what an absolutely AWESOME video!! Bravo!!!!!!!!!!
Clear explanation. I thought if you did the figure 8 you don't need the cover piece.
It's pretty annoying that the official account instructs you to do figure 8 when they don't give you enough tape to do one.
I was always told to wrap away or towards the outside of the bars as your hands naturally want to grip and twist to the outside as you are riding. If you wrap to the inside that would tend to want to unravel the tape ( with the modern sticky tape this is probably not going to happen either way ). Also it seems unnecessary to use the clamp strip and the figure 8 both at the same time, just creates a lot of bulk at the levers. Have you ever had a tape that was so sticky that when came time to remove it came off in chunks and pieces.
In this one they wrap it to the outside, too.
I totally agree with Steve. My tape would be unraveling from the top in about two weeks if I wrapped in the direction used in this video. Watching him do it wrong refreshed my memory. ;-)
Exactly the same here, I'll do it the other war around or it will unwrap in no time.
Thank you as always.
I thought when you wrap the tape and get to the top from the hood the tape should go backwards for when you are sat in a climbing position?
Good job; thanks. Can you show us the right way to clean the bar tape?
That is a lot of coverage for the clamp. I find that when trying to do a full figure 8 I run out of tape. Also I thought that extra piece allows you to avoid a full figure 8.
The figure eight puts too much tape under the hood and they don't lie nice and flat
Instead of doing an 8 get as close to the hood as possible, go over the top and around the around the hood on the inside and carry on, seen in park tools video
Use the strip or do a fig-8. Don't do both... if you're going to do both, then wrap the tape 10 times around the clamp so you make the handlebars look really awful and completely ususable, just like this guy has done!
Agree looks bulky
boro92 Agreed the wrapping makes my eyes burn!
thx worked well :)
Man, after watching dozens of videos to learn how to wrap my handlebars, I realized this was a horrible job. Then I saw the comments, good thing I'm not the only one that noticed. I haven't even wrapped my own bars yet and I can tell this guy just did this as quick as possible for a video. Redo this man, make it look professional!
+Layton Asmus Whats wrong with it? This is 3.2 mm tape you realise. Maybe try doing it b4 u criticise.
+tewaewae I did wrap them. I watched as many videos as possible, and my bar tape looks perfect.
good for you, you better upload how to wrap them perfect.
tewaewae, this dude wrapped the tops backwards, it was a wack wrap job that anybody could have done better.
great vid.
Thanks!
this is my tape and i love it
Just wondering why all of the pro bike folks are watching a beginner video? Perhaps he did a good rather than perfect job to make us all feel good about our better job? Bike people unite!
Because sometimes when you use a product you want to see how to correctly mount it and its subtilities and there is always a chance of learning something new.
this video is not good because you will think this is the correct way of doing it. This is NOT. Wrong technique and bad execution. Go watch park tool video, you will see how it looks like when correctly done and lots of tips to do it better and easier. As a bike mech the tape posing is the first thing i watch to know if someone is conscientious at his job because you dont need to be a pro to do it well but if you are patient you can do it beautifully.
@@MrJagbolet I watched only because the manner of wrapping is different than my old school way of doing it. At least I know that I need to put electrical tape at the top. I was thinking the end tape was supposed to be what I put on the end. Good thing I got the gist of it.
Could you guys spare like 3" more tape. It would have made the job easier!
Wish I'd have watched this earlier. That stuff is difficult to install and the sticky strip is very narrow and not very sticky. The clamp covers kept falling off.
My backing strip is a lot narrower than the one in the video and when I peel it off it basically rips off the foam of the bar tape and reveals no adhesive. Can someone explain??
nice ultegra shifters
Figure 8 coverage is not ideal - it makes a bulky area behind the levers. Check out Park Tool video on bar taping.
perfect
きれい!!!
I find Liz Skin is hard to install cause the leading edge does not lie flat after you come off the brake hood
Always wondered does it really matter which way you start the tape whether it it's clockwise or counter clockwise? If you can shed some light on it I would appreciate it :)
When your riding, you're applying pressure in the direction of the wrap. This keeps your tape tight.
Tidy job!
IDK about the 2.5 but the 3.2 was not long enough to cover 44cm bars without a tad bit of stretching.
I also want to know how to keep the end caps from popping out of the bars. Finished my build took a break for about 10mins and the caps were on the floor, they will not stay for nothing. Looks like I will have to buy some screw on caps. If you buy this tape go ahead and get some. Expensive tape that feels great but the 2 minor problems makes you think WTF was I thinking.
Hey buddy. I have been a bike mech for almost 16 years in australia. When i wrap tape, i dont overhang the tape at the bottom for the plug.. i actually wrap it flush with the end of the bar, carefully overlapping underneath. I use double sided tape and wrap it around the end of the bar so that the tape sits there nice n tight whilst i finish off wrapping to the top of the bars. All my customers are "wrapped" with my method. It never comes undone and you dont get the bulging end cap. I usually wrap the bar plug with electrical tape to buffer it out so it sits nice n securely in the hbar. Hope this helps. If i knew how to upload a vid and could make a decent tutorial, i would make a video.. mayb i could look into that.
hollowearthreality Love that, I'll try that out. Thanks!
tyvm
Without stretching there's no way my lizard skin tape reached that far ( on medium bars) . I didn't even do that 'figure 8'.
I had to use some old bar tape under electrical tape. Now I'm rocking a nice "getto look"
i used dsp 1.8 and I barely had enough tape
This was my last shot of making Lizard work for me. They have not only unwrapped over time but are extremely slippery with sweat or rain (which is basically every ride). I just did a nice wrap, lets see I this is my last set of Lizards or not....
Well, you haters, you get the idea though. Nice bar tape.
@FLATSPOT24 they are Shimano 105 brakes.
Thanks for the DSP application.I heard that you have to be a bit more careful; not the usual stretching in the wrap w of other synthetic tapes. Do use the small piece to cover the lever clamp (cut so covering just the clamp, none of the body -to prevent bumps under the hood. Finally, by using the extra piece, you avoid the "figure eight" around the lever, it is far too thick as you can clearly see. There is no reason to ultimately misshapen the lever hood over such bulging & a mass of wrap.
dont need to figure 8. to bulky and changes direction of tape...
You do want to change the direction, but there are way better ways to do it.
I wrap the drops first, then come up one side of the hoods and wrap the tops. Looks good, full coverage and changes the direction.
Park Tool has a very good CZcams for wrapping road bars. It avoids the bulky figure 8 technique and reverses the bar tape direction on the top just as you are suggesting to do.
Lizardskins are fantastic, but they are a litle dificult to install, especially in my 3t biomorph handlebar.i like to do it myself because i find that the majority of the mechanics in the stores are not very familiar with this kind of bar tape and normaly do a poor job, like this one.
going backwards, it will unravel after a few good rides
pěkná páska
what kind of brakes are those ?
Lizard skins is my dream wraps 😂 they are like $40
this looks terrible
Nice I always screw up the start
Yeah, I agree, that is NOT how to wrap!
this bar tape is awesome just need better glue on the bar plug logo they always fall off!
They have allan bolts in them now to hold cap tight.
Lizard Skins needs to make a tape with the same material but WITHOUT any texture. The pattern in the texture traps dirt and is impossible to clean. The material is grippy enough that texture is not needed.
Lizard skin is a thick tape looks bad but it's nice stuff. Not to sure about using your little peace to hide the brakes that's what the figure of 8 is for.
I like this tape but the other one you do, that has little dots on, is impossible to fit. Just wasted £30.
It went together easily in less than an hour. czcams.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Make sure the front fork is forward or the pedals will hit the front tire. Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.
This video makes it look like they give you enough tape to spare when in reality, I've found that the tape is not long enough.
I purchased Lizard Skin tape in orange, Really nice color felt good on my hands etc. One problem it deteriorated in less than 18 months, literally flaking apart. Unacceptable at this price point.
Perhaps a stupid question, but since it is named after animals, is it made of real skin?
lolz.
Yes, it's 40% Chameleon/55% Monitor and 5% Newt for cushioning.
Katrine Because of the feel of it. Pay no attention to those bad boys. 😉
who else is watching this for there second or third time just bc of how satisfying it looks
JOSHUA LIM I love the sound of the bar tape also. Am I weird,it sends me to sleep. It's a great cure for my insomnia. Lol!
굿
Where are the links to "THE BEST WRAPPING WAY" from the ones who hated it. Just want to learn how to do it better if this is NOT the best way to do. Make a video please and show us... thanks.
O my Good
poor wrap job. good product. make the spools longer though
Seriously, no need for figure 8, wrapped wrong direction on top section, and certainly wrapped on a 400mm or less bar with that much left over.
Wrapped it the wrong way...I was taught to wrap towards the bike and it hasn't failed me yet. Give it a few rides and this expensive ass bar tape will be unraveled. Nice tape and tacky as fuhhh...but Fizik tacky black has my vote.
+Ethan “Iggy” Rosen I have seen it done both ways, I wrap mine away from the bike. Also I avoid a figure 8 and cut the lever trim tape so it is does not lap over the brake mount. YMMV
Owijanie na zewnątrz powoduje szybsze luzowanie się owijki , powinno się owijać do środka .
best how to on youtube thanks...
well fucking done wow
Is this ASMR?
I wonder how many times he cocked it up before he was able to wrap it as cleanly as he did in this video :)
Should't there be some Rap music in the background?
I’m an amateur cyclist and I wanted to re-skin my bars and I heard that 3M tape does wonders. I wonder if it’s true.
performance
what happens if you stretch the tape?
I hope nothing because i just did it, not with this brand of tape though.
Cristian Baluta did yours explicitly say not to stretch it too?
I don't know, there was something but i didn't read and i throw it already. The reason i stretched it is because all my tapes slipped their original position till you can see the handlebar where it turns 90degrees.
i found it helps a lot with slippery non-adhesive tape, to have a layer of thin adhesive fabric tape or cut open inner tube underneath. or what ever you can find. :D
(i like adding a bit of thickness and bulge to the grip-positions at the top and on the drops, with cheap fabric grip tape underneath the outer wrap)
good one CZcams "problem uploading comment. Try again "
I think not.
Why shouldn't you stretch the tape? Are you just worried about people breaking it?
I've generally found the tighter you stretch the tape - without breaking it - the longer it will hold its place and last. And to compensate for thinning the padding by stretching it, just wrap the tape spacing closer together to make it thicker.
I did stretch it, I think I'll just do it next time as well, because it turned out well
stretching makes the tape less soft..and with gel/padded tapes you ruin all the softness that the gel/padding gives you.
I will stop stretching tape when manufacturers stop being cheap and barely include 200cm of tape, which is near impossible to wrap a 44cm ergo bar.
thechosendude totally agree--so stupid that these handlebar tapes are so short that i barely have enough to cover the handlebar. it really would cost them much more to give us another 3-4 inches. i wouldn't mind paying an extra 10 cents for that.
Scott Lum - I agree. I'm sure the production cost of a pair of wraps is mere cents on the dollar. Is the market that competitive for bar wrap they need to try and save a few cents? I think it should be common place for manufacturers to actually list the tape length on the packaging.
It's funny, because the wrap a lot of pro WorldTour cycling teams get from sponsors (comes bulk packaged) tends to be longer than the stuff consumers can buy.
wrap*
If you're going to use a strip of tape to cover the clamp, a figure 8 is pointless, my opinion though.
I'll subscribe for some tape.
terrible job, you made me feel good about my wrapping skills lol !
Agree. For a promo video, you can assume he's a pro or top mechanic. But to me it's uneven finish. Which makes it look poor skill. Check at 5.00, look at the specilized wording on the bars.
he knows he wrapped the tops backwards right?
Filmed in 260k
litter skinz?
The brakes are ultegra

I always struggle with butt plugs
Ага, только задом на перед.
Dat red tape tho.
@ 00:55 he starts to rap.
joshua bike whosaler malaysia
Lizard Skin bar wrap are PERFECT. Mine is long lasting, even after a fall at 40km/h, the tape didn't move, it didn't even scratch! (and I followed that tuto)
FYI - to all of you guys saying this video is shit. We're still waiting for your video of the perfect bar wrap installation!
...Oh yes, I was just thinking, as you're all as great as you pretend to be, you'll do this for sure in the same 5 minutes! ;)
Martin DYN There's plenty of good bar wrap vids already on CZcams.
I agree, but finally, not as good as that one.
💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪
Srsly you even wrapped it worse... what kind of tutorial is this?
I just did my very first handlebar wrap and it looks much better than this ... his spacing is horrible and why do a figure 8 if you're going to use an extra strip to seal the open spaces around the shifter clamp, it looks very bulky.
Muy cara y se estropea muy pronto.
