Have you tried Logic Pro on the iPad? If so, what do you think Apple needs to do with it next?
Midi learn. I noticed you using the pads on the Launchkey mini for drums, which is great. The pads on my Akai MPK 2 Mini sadly didn’t work. No worries, I thought, let’s just use the midi learn feature. Ah. Not there. 😢
Next?
They need to contact native instruments and get that stuff to AuV3 or the library.
Where do you plug the headphone in? The dongle or directly to the iPad?
@@jimbrimble3131 yeah for sure it's the most important thing, really annoying oversight
In my opinion, the best DAW on a mobile device. The more I dig in to Logic for iPad, the more I am floored by the amount of functionality they packed in this program. Most of the things people are complaining that Logic for iPad doesn’t do, haven’t dug deep enough.
True dude. I just tried Logic Pro, started about a week ago. I read somewhere someone complaining about it not having enough woodwind instruments. Actually we can tune any woodwind present to our likings by tinkering with the alchemy, reverbs, etc. So yes, those people haven’t dug enough.
@@thevelfyyou know it’s super hard to run saw on mobile? The fact logic works on the iPad show how much cpu it is using, insane!
Great video! I’ve been on the fence about using Logic Pro on my iPad. This video makes me want to give it a try. I’d love to see a video of you giving a step by step of building a track. That would be very helpful!
It’s keeping me on the couch creating loops with the iPad on my lap. Then after a few nights when I go to create on the MacBook Pro I need to get into that again. The MacBook is more unlimited because of all the plugins I have, but there’s something about the balance between possibilities and constraints on the iPad that fuels creativity. The big challenge is making full songs. Haven’t gotten around to that yet. That’s my next beachhead.
if you want one thing thats def needed, is programming the midi keys or at least having a "logic ipad" midi setting to map the controller. You'll notice you won't be able to use transport/DAW controls on that novation... other than to just use as drumpads.
I have been using Logic since the emagic days , biggest frustration create a project and when you port it to the mac any custom auv3 plug ins are obviously missing! Like wise the other way, as the iPad doesn’t run mac plug ins. Although i think the iPad version is very good it is far from a pro operating system ie iPadOS. Anyway glad you are enjoying the plug in problem is an issue for me as i use both platforms extensively, but it is a start.
What a great video Mark - thank you
Just ordered the new iPad Pro 12.9 with 1T memory and can’t wait to download Logic Pro! I’ve been using Pro X on my MacBook Pro but honestly sometimes it gets annoying, not major screw this annoying, just annoying with the trackpad and drawing part of making music. This is going to have me GLUED to Logic Pro making music now with how seamlessly it looks to be! I’m chomping at the bits! 🤩
I agree totally. It’s fantastic.
Been making videos on producing music on iPad for years so it's so awesome to see Logic Pro finally come to iPad!
Great stuff mate. I really enjoyed it
Ah - thank you!
A couple of pieces of magic:
1) You can double-tap the control bar at the bottom of the screen to put away all open panels except the tracks, and double-tap again to bring them up as they were before.
2) There are other ways to add instruments.
a) Tap the + to start a new track then tap the … button on the MIDI tile; select an instrument or patch from the Patch/Instrument section. If you want to then open the Browser to try out different patches, tap the Open Browser switch with Type set to Presets.
b) Select a track then open the Mixer; tap the + icon at the top of the pane to go to Setup mode; scroll up to the top to see the instrument name 2nd from the top; tap it and tap Replace to choose another one, or tap Show Presets to choose another patch.
Nice - thanks!
just found your channel, I have subscribed now, but myself I have been using logic and apple since 1997 ish, had cubase originally then moved to Logic, I was curious and excited about this Logic be made available on iPad, enjoyed the review you have made, going to try it out for myself now.
Apple did great job with Logic Pro for iPad. I love the ease with which you can move projects back and forth between iPad and Mac Book. OK, there are more fine detail settings for instruments on MacBook compared with the iPad, but these MacBook setting are still preserved when the project is moved to the iPad and back. I use a Novation LaunchPad Pro Mk3 as both a Midi Control surface and Midi instrument with Logic Pro on my MacBook, but this currently only works as a Midi Instrument with Logic Pro for iPad. I can live with this, because what Logic Pro for iPad has over and above its Mac OS counterpart are its own control surfaces that you can pull up and use to control and play instruments etc, making it possible to be a standalone setup, unlike the Mac Version. My 12.9-inch M1 iPad Pro has 2TB of storage, so I had more than enough room to install the entire Logic Pro for iPad sound library, which is virtually the same as sound library on the Mac version. When testing how well moving projects for Mac to iPad and vice versa worked, I initially tried using the Mac Logic Pro demo project. This worked, which was amazing when you consider how large this project is with all the content it includes, but I did have to remember to save it on my Mac to "include Apple Sound Library Content" otherwise when I loaded it on the iPad it would advise me there was some missing content, despite my sound libraries on both MacBook and iPad being virtually identical. There are also some third-party plugins and instruments on my Mac that I cannot currently use on my iPad, but I don't think this will be a major issue, when you consider how much is already available from within Logic Pro itself.
Is the sound library really as fleshed out as the Mac version? I feel like there's a fair bit missing
Would really want a long-term review of the Logic Pro for iPad. I have both the Mac and iPad version and so far I am enjoying the iPad more as it is more fun and intuitive. I am an amateur so I am probably missing lots of advanced features on the mac but roundtripping support is definitely the most important feature for me
Great intro to Logic Pro for iPad. I am curious to see how the new iPad Pro with M4 works with Logic Pro and the features that open up from the upgrade. I originally ordered the 512 GB version of the new iPad Pro but changed my order to the 1 TB version just for the extra RAM which should make it a powerhouse of a setup for Logic Pro for iPad. Maybe I'll end up recording more often.
Particularly happy about the knobs to play around with on the Novation.
That's exactly what she said.
I like the stacking. Makes good use of the 16:10 aspect ratio.
Having created music on the iPad via other DAWs over the past 4 years it doesn't surprise me that the platform is more than capable of the task. There have been music tools available for long enough and iPad works fine with them. Great to see Apple have embraced their own platform by bringing Logic over 😂. I wonder whether this will encourage other desktop DAWs to port their full-fat versions across. And whether it will actually make any difference to the quality of music that is created on iPads.
I’m hoping for FL Studio to be brought over 🤞🏼
I have pretty much replaced most of my computing with my iPad. If only we could use terminal with it and vscode it would be complete
I can see in the very near future using the iPad for creation and tracking (mainly due to the touch screen) and then taking it to the Mac for serious mixing (mainly due to 3rd party plugins)
Interesting and well done! I was a logic fan 20yrs ago and when I took a break and wanted to get back in I switched over to Presonus Studio One. Felt logic was getting stale… but this mobile version of logic appears better than Presonus’ iPad version (Capture). Do you know if and how well this logic mobile can handle multi track recording via usb? Also would you recommend only using this for capture and then moving over to a bigger machine for any post? I have a bunch of virtual instruments, sample libraries, UAD and Fabfilter plugins I use that I’m not sure if would be compatible with iOS.. seems in terms of horse power the iPad should have what it takes. Plugins won’t take up much storage but virtual instruments can get big.. just thinking out loud. Enjoy following your channel! Keep up the great work.
Great video I absolutely love Logic on iPad finally Apple brought it to iPad Pro users after years of talk from Apple about it. I’ve been using GarageBand for last 4-5 years but got frustrated with it because it’s so basic and watered down compared to Logic Pro on Mac. Now I’ve been using Logic Pro on iPad since it was released and I’m very happy with how it works and runs. I now have my mixer and automation, filters etc. 😂
Hi James, can you pinch-zoom the screen on logic pro, so that one can zoom into any aspect of the app in use?
Would you be storing your projects on iCloud , being that you only have the base model iPad Pro as I do?
Would love to see more tutorials on Logic Pro for iPad. As someone who has always wanted to get into music production but didn’t know where to start, this seems like a great setup to learn.
As always, great content.
So helpful🙏🏽
Glad it was helpful!
I'm loving the iPad version of Logic Pro, too. It's simply great. Just two things are missing, a proper external monitor support and the complete notation section, which I really need. Now I'm experimenting with a collaboration between Logic Pro and Dorico on the iPad to get these things done…
There are a few other minor things missing. Flex Time and Flex Pitch being some. This was pushed out to meet a deadline and is only version 1.0 and is stellar thus far.
External monitor as is a screen or studio monitors/speakers? I have XLR studio speakers connected via a USB audio interface and it works great.
@@360Panda As soon as You connect an external screen, the audio output always is set to the external screen. That’s a no go!
@@BFree this is indeed one of the dumbest things about making music on the iPad! why aren't they fixing this??
Hey Mark Ellis!...Thanks Much !.......
Very cool intro. I can relate 😂
Hey Marc! Would you maybe do a review of the M2 Mac Studio MAX
Hi Thank you for your review. Can you please explain how this pro can be helpful for a drummer.
When do you think the iPad version will come with ALL the software instruments and sounds the Mac version comes with? I mean, the library isn't fully fleshed out. It's missing a lot.
There is no point offering 1TB+ storage options for a tablet computer in my opinion otherwise.
For a dawless person who needs a basic daw arranger for various instrument tracks, would this be a good way to go?
Yes, I did get the Apple dongle, but I can't plug it into my Apple 3 port adapter. It has a C port, but it doesn't transmit the sound to the headphones. I have to use them separately.
Hi -- I'm a musician and I'm trying to decide between the 11 inch and 13 inch iPad Air 6. I mostly create video productions comprised of voice and acoustic guitar, but sometimes do projects that crank up to about 20 tracks, with submixes. I do like the more portable size of the 11", but am I likely to find the 11" a bit cramped for the more multi track projects?
could I still use my studio usb microphone? What would I need?
Is this ideally meant for an iPad Pro? Could you run it on the cheapest iPad?
What about plugins support? And external audio interfaces would love to hookup my fireface ucx
I try to download it but unfortunately not available for iPad 6th gen, I would not mind to upgrade for a bigger iPad but there is nothing with a jack that is much bigger less than one inch….
Thanks for sharing this valuable information!
Question: Does it matter what kind of iPad a person has? Can this Logic Pro be purchased separately?
yes it matters I have an older iPad Pro, and it won't allow me to download it.
You forgot to mention any external interface compatibility and if your using Scarlett ?
Can I have the whole sitting and set up if I have an iPad pro M1 11”?
So have you used GarageBand on the iPad?, because I've been using it since 2012 but I wanted to know how Logic Pro compares to GarageBand if you're experienced with using both apps?,
Thanks brother so ı can ask one questions? I will buy iPad 10. Gen. 64 GB versions enought for logic Pro ?
Does control surfaces like FaderPort work with it?
Hi Mark I really appreciate you great support for all of us followers of you .
I just installed the logic and I want to know if possible used external keyboard 🎹 from comander Alessis Q49 on software of Logic Pro
Thank you 🙏
great take! so many think iPadOS is inferior to macOS but the opposite is true, it will only get better from here, and the only way to get there where it's going is not having macOS on the iPad which enforces touch first designed Software from the ground up, a feature unique to iPadOS.
Younger people these days have no idea how good they have it. Making music is so much more accessible. Just about anyone can record their music and it will sound good. When I was a kid I would use an old school tape recorder. I only used those recordings for personal use. Basically to record songs and riffs so I wouldn’t forget anything. It truly is amazing. It’s crazy to me that more people don’t utilize this. Even GarageBand can create some good sounding tracks.
My Focusrite 8i8 doesn’t work with my new a iPad Pro 😫. Word is, iOS > jacks it up. Worked on my iPad Air perfectly 😢
It will be nice if you can show recording acoustic guitar into logic then just working with loops and electronic music
New sub.
THX very much for pointing out
(& linking to solutions) the iOS latency issue; one wrong choice & it’s metallic bouncing. 😐
I know you get stock loops from those apps but how do I get custom loops ported into the app?
Make some more video’s Mark🎙️
This is so cool! My mac (m1) is collecting dust, Ipad m2 the only go to “computer” now!
That's awesome!
Sorry, but you are not doing any real computing tasks if that is the case. Just consuming content.
@@sigiligus what?!
NanoStudio 2 is amazing on the iPad.
Can someone explain to me if there’s a benefit to using Logic Pro on iPad while mainly using Logic on my MacBook I just wanna record myself without having to run back to my keyboard to stop and record
Because of the topic of Logic for iPad, I (re)discovered the Logic Remote app. 😅
Can you record the bias fx2 tones into Logic Pro x on the iPad ? If so, how do you route it that way?
I forgot to cancel the free trial 3 days ago and now I've payed for a full year...but what I take from this video is that it's like Bob Ross says: a happy accident. Can't wait to go home and hook up my bass and get some recording done!
Hi, when I record a midi track using my Roland fp10, connecting it via a midi cable, the midi track gets recorded in the logicpro for iPad, however since I am using the sustain pedal on my Roland, the midi track has either too much sustain or if I reduce the sustain it becomes too little. Why doesn’t record just the way I use the sustain pedal?
Could i cut through a plug in on the mac say a neural amp sim or use a uad tape sim Freeze it then take it to the ipad
Can you turn up/down the headphone volume with this adapter? I’ve got one that won’t let me turn down the volume cause the iPad thinks it’s a HDMI output.
You can indeed - works as normal.
@@MarkEllisReviews thank you very much. You’re the best!
Hmmmm .. can you do non destructive editing like on the computer Daws? For instance I use Reaper, if I go in to a project/song and start adding stuff or tweaking things .. when I’m done it will ask me if I want to save my work .. often times I’ll say no and quit Reaper and none of the tweaks I did are saved, however in Cubasis every little tweak I make is automatically saved unless I hit the undo button after each individual tweak, I don’t like that .. I’d rather make all the changes .. then if I’m happy hit save, that’s how Ive worked for 30 years. Also if I fly in a midi file with different time signature markers .. is logic going to read those? Cubasis doesn’t .. another big bummer. Thanks
I'm using a Launchkey25 with LogicPro for iPad, but the pads don't line up with the visual drum pad on-screen. Do you know how to fix this?
New sub. Great content. lovely soothing voice. I hate guys shouting at me. lol
Can someone just please compare this product to Roland Zenbeats? If you want to make it as simple as what Zenbeats can’t do or sucks at compared to Logic Pro on an iPad.
10 months later.... are you still using Logico n iPad or are you back to MacOS?
The stacking is just like Ableton Live.
Still not convinced. How much was your ‘basic’ setup? 12” M2 iPad Pro + Smart Keyboard! Compare this to an entry level M1 MacBook Air with a full version of Logic (which would come in under £1k). Not for me at the moment.
It's defo a great mobile music creation setup for laying down initial ideas.
It’s better than that.
Unless youre a pro its good enough for anyone.
Is your music even better than a 4 track bro
Its a lot better than that lol
It’s honestly Logic Pro, which is a professional DAW. It’s capable of so much. And this is version 1.0
Which Novation controller are you using?
It doesn’t work on my iPad Pro and it’s a subscription. I hate subscription models so I’ll be giving it a miss. £50 a year May not seem much but for an app?
Does it use AUv stuff? Can I use my external synths and stuff? No midi learn? Dealbreaker. Nothing you can say after matters
I use Logic Pro on my MacBook Air M1 and it’s the best setup I’ve used. I have a 2018 IPad Pro but unfortunately it doesn’t support Logic Pro….you need the bionic chip and later. From your video it looks like GarageBand.
2018 iPad Pro has the A12X Bionic, and also it doesn't really look like Garageband. What a weird comment...
@@BlueHawk80 Sorry, the comment was in no way intended to be weird. I rechecked. My iPad pro is a 2017, 10.5 inch 512 gig. An A1701. The comment re it looking like Garage Band was due to screenshots I'd seen.
@@Hammerman48 ah yeah the 2017, I had the same one, it was great!
@@BlueHawk80 Yes, it's fine for what I use it for....though an M1 model would be nice! But I use the MacBook Air for music with Logic so I can't complain!
How do you connect and map the midi controller ive got the launchkey mini mk3
Did u work it out? I can just use the keys and pads, but not the knobs for example, and all setup guides or manuals i can find only explain the setup for logic pro x… Do i also need to instal the novation usb driver on the iPad..?
We basically got to see what Logic Pro is going to look like on the MacBook and Macdesktop version, with the new features.
Hey Mark do you know if you could use this in conjunction with an interface/soundboard? Using the USBB to USBC cable and import live audio, like you can on the desktop version?
You can indeed!
@@MarkEllisReviews I’m going to give it a shot today then.
@@MarkEllisReviews Hey Mark I got it to work! Is there a quick way to have it remember the interface after the app is closed and reopened? My soundboard disappears after it gets plugged back in.
Does anyone know if the novation launchkey mini comes with usc cable or do you have to buy it seperatly to connect to ipad?
I Use sony playstation pulse 3d wireless headphone. It work perfect no latency.
For music prod? Cool
A single-window interface used to be called Logic Pro 8.
I knew it well.
Can I import projects from Logic Pro X from Macbook?
It’s defo a step in the right direction, but no plugins means at BEST you can get an idea down etc. But then why not just use the desktop version?
Desktop version isn’t 49 quid a year either…
If you have the money, why not? It’s a Mobile pre-production device that you can come up with ideas laying in your bed, $50 a a year is worth it for me, but that’s just my opinion
AuV3’s are plug-ins. A mobile version of VST’s. I learned to give the companies time to create them. I don’t think those plug-in companies knew Logic was coming to iPad or that there was a demand for them.
It's great, but they don't give you the option to buy it straight out like on the Mac for 199
How does Logic run for iPad Air (most recent model)? Has anyone tried it yet?
Does anyone know how to load your own CST (Channel Strip) files onto Logic Pro on iPad ???
If you like it enjoy it
The subscription screws it for me, I on,y create now n then ✌️
Subscription can be started and stopped, though. You get a month free at the get go, and if you choose the 4.99/month option, you just pay for it the months you'll use it. Stepping away from it for the winter? No problem, don't pay those months.
Which ipad better for logic? 11inch or 12,9 inch???
12.9".
Yeah for music prod it matters. I used an 11” with Zenbeats app and even though it’s not Logic Pro, they both use the same auv3’s; when I use my new 12.9” I can see the whole auv3 menus. It also dramatically increased the amount of bars across the top I can view w/o scrolling.
11" is much more portable and lighter, though. Considering it also works on the regular 10.2" and even the Mini 8.3" iPads we should be fine with 11".
Currently the 1.0 version is severely lacking in the audio editing department. I want to be able to record guitar and quantize the audio (flex time). I want to record vocals and record takes then compile the best of performances (quick swipe comping). I want to correct the occasional flat note(flex pitch). All missing currently. This is just a few to mention but very important to me. I also love sound design in Alchemy but on ipad it's restricted to pretty much preset choosing. Good start for Logic on ipad, hopefully in about 2 years it will get even with the macos version.
You can do all that. Takes, Flex Time are all there.
@@AfroThriller I don’t think so. No quick swipe comping. Look it up. Play a guitar part fast notes. Try to move the 51st note to the right with flex time. No flex pitch as is now….
I hate how they got rid of support with the iPad pro 2017 for this app
IMHO Logic Pro for iPad should be included with the Mac version, and if not then it should definitely be included in the education bundle. I don't see the need to pay for a subscription on this. I would however love to replace Apple News+, or Apple Arcade for this as part of the Apple One Subscription. Other than that... The subscription model is not for me.
Not really roundtrippable to be honest. But it is really impressive especially given it’s a first release
Technically it is, and I'm willing to give Apple that ;)
Until you realize that you don’t have soothe, your 1076, and that dynamic eq that you used to hone in your vocal stack😂
For me its not mind blowing if I have to rebuy all my third party AUs for Logic Pro to run projects on a very powerful I pad. It would be very logical to be able just to port the plug in folder onto the I pad and beeing good to go. Apple makes great hardware but many steps are too complicate for professional useres. For me it would be a dream to use my I pad with logic pro while traveling. I pretty much hate laptops… the I-pad is great for traveling….
They should make a 14 inch version with headphone jack
What version of iPad is used for this setup?
@ 10:12 never mind lol
Today I learned British people use the word “showstopper” very differently from how Americans use it
You´re not using an audio interface???
My iPad is a previous gen, but it even as is I dislike the subscription. I'd rather save up mowing lawns then. Cave in on a subscription
When can we hear some of your music?
I rarely finish anything these days, but there's some older stuff here: soundcloud.com/defaultrockstar
