  • I was travelling on board the 17617 Mumbai CST - Nanded Tapovan Express from Dadar to Igatpuri. I had decided to take an uninterrupted video coverage of the ghat section from Kasara to Igatpuri. Our train was hauled by a Kalyan shed WCAM-3 locomotive and at Kasara three WAG-7 banker locomotives were attached to push us up the ghat, out of which the first one was dead and only the rear two locomotives were working.
At 08:45 am, we depart from platform 1 of Kasara station and start our ascent up the ghat. We soon cross a pair of bankers descending towards Kasara and after that we enter the first tunnel on the ghat. We pass the catch siding of cabin 3 and then cross the Howrah - Mumbai CST Mail waiting for the signal to continue the descent. Soon after that we overtake some trucks climbing up the ghat on National Highway 3 (the Mumbai - Nashik Highway). A few more tunnels and bridges and then past cabin 2 (another catch siding). Then comes the last part of the ghat where the other two tracks split up and go on the other side of the valley. Over there you can see the Rajendranagar Mumbai LTT Express. We rumble over the Ehgaon viaduct and start slowing down and finally come to a halt outside Igatpuri at cabin 1. This is because the Gitanjali Express ahead of us had not yet given a clear platform for us to enter. However in a few seconds we move again and begin the slow entry into Igatpuri. An Emirates plane from Dubai to Taipei can be seen flying overhead (checked on Flightradar). Then you can see the electric locomotive trip shed before we enter platform 1 of Igatpuri. We come to a smooth stop at 09:15 am, exactly half an hour since we left Kasara. Throughout the journey you can hear vendors inside the train selling their products. Also the run was not very fast and I have seen trains do it in even 15 to 20 minutes. This time we kept slowing down because of speed restrictions and also the train ahead of us. Anyway the speed does not affect the scenery and I hope you enjoy the journey around the curves, through the tunnels and over the bridges as we climb the ghat.
This was also my first journey on this ghat section by rail. I have gone by car and captured trains on the ghat, but never gone on the ghat by train, so it was a good memory for me.
