    I read somewhere that the reason why the money were in the cans was because Mikey already decided to k*ll himself. He didnt want to leave the money in a bank so that there wont be any taxes/deductions/whatever its called. He wanted Carmy to have the restaurant and he trusts that Carmy will do the right thing. That's why the final shot of this episode was him smirking telling Carmy "I got you bud".
    Also, the scene when it was revealed that Bernthal was Mikey, they were making the Braciole dish, and it's a subtle demonstration that Mikey always starts things and he let's Carmy finish it. Just like him starting the Beef and leaving it to Carmy to become the Bear.

    It's so true about eating out at cheap places but it feels special. Our family was dirt poor and sometimes we lived off of government cheese and such. Sometimes our parents would go dumpster diving for food when money was really short otherwise none of us would eat. But once in a while, our treat would be going to White Castle and just being together in Dad's Station Wagon and enjoying a meal together.

    Kudos for getting through season 1! Tidbits about the episode:
    *Episode 1 ended with Carmy throwing away a spaghetti sauce can. Yes it’s been confirmed Carmy threw away a few thousand dollars when that happened.
    *Mikey’s voice echoes in earlier episodes. You hear it this episode as well when Carmy’s waking up from his nightmare. The words “Let It Rip” were in the whispers in this episode and a prior episode before Carmy reveals its significance.
    *A can seamer can apparently be seen in the background earlier in the season. You also see it in the season 2 premiere but only in the background, it’s never emphasized in the show to explain things. So Mikey did the sealing of the money himself. What KBL is will be explained very soon.
    *Ritchie’s ex-wife’s voice is someone you’ll recognize. It’ll be confirmed next season who the voice is though so I’ll leave it a secret.
    *Forgot to mention this. It’s not the clearest explanation, but “The Bear” name comes from Carmy’s last name, Berzatto. This episode has Ritchie call Mikey Mikey-Bear revealing it’s a nickname for all the family members, not just one exclusive to Carmy.

    • @rmvdhaak
      @rmvdhaak Před 5 měsíci +1

      I still call bullshit on him resealing the cans. According to articles at the time when this episode aired, you cannot reseal a metal can once it’s been opened.

    • @robertdelossantos5844
      @robertdelossantos5844 Před 5 měsíci +12

      @@rmvdhaakdid some research on this. Think you’re right. What probably happened is Mikey opened tomato sauce cans, kept the labels, and sealed the money in new cans and put the labels back on. I mean, it’s tv magic so the explanation is just something to live with anyways, like the idea that no one opened the cans with the money after Mikey died. Even if Carmy 86’d the spaghetti, you’d think someone would’ve opened a can in the interim between Mikey’s death and Carmy taking over the store which according to the show, there was a big gap. Plus it’d be odd to not use tomato sauce in other items other than the spaghetti, even if there were apparently different sized cans that could have been used instead.

    If you remember, the first episode ended with Carmy going to make the Family Spaghetti, but after he opens the tomato can, he throws it out 😮
    Edit: I would like to address why the first tomato can being tossed out in episode one matters. It is an excellent example of how trauma and dysfunction set you back. The lost money may have been recouped by other means, but it doesn't change all the time that was lost from turning The Beef into The Bear.
    One of the biggest themes I have found in The Bear is how dysfunction makes life harder. Life isn't impossible. They did discover the money, but it took months. Whereas if Carmy hadn't resented that recipe and finished making it, he would have found the money a lot sooner and most of the tension and situations in the rest of the season would have gone very differently or not happen at all. The money may not have fixed everything in everyone's lives, but it certainly would have helped.
    The canned money is just one aspect the show uses to highlight how trauma affects people. And I just adore the can revelation.
    I hope that clears up why I wanted to leave a comment about the cans at all.

    Yea the way I interpret Michael's intentions is he thinks Cicero would forgive the debt. He took out this loan from Cicero, knowing he would hide it for Carmi. Maybe he think this is a way to gift his brother the money to build his restaurant debt-free, not realizing Cicero will just hold the restaurant/family responsible for the debt, and regardless of what Carmi does with the funds, they'll still owe Cicero the money back for the loan. So, good intentions from Mikey, but not a good understanding of how the debt would work.
    There's also other theories out there, I don't know if we'll ever get concrete answers with Mikey gone. But a point that is often brought up, and important to remember, is that Mikey was a drug addict and using. It's very likely that he just wasn't thinking very clearly, regardless of his intentions. It made sense to him, for whatever reason, to hide the money in the cans for Carmi.

    The more he didn't respond, the more it strained the relationship and the more it drove him into cooking to get a response and the better it made him, which strained the relationship more, which drove him more into it and he got better, which strained the relationship more and drove him further into it and he got better, which strained the relationship....this speaks to me because I've LIVED it. I want to impress this person, oh they didn't see, fine I'll do BETTER, oh they still didn't see F THEM I don't care, I don't care AT ALL, I care so little I'm going to show them I was always better than them lol.

    What I didn't like is that only Carmen said sorry. As if Marcus hadn't learned the amount of fuck up that he was doing, a big chunk of the reason everything was going wrong that day was because of him.
    And this hasn't been addressed even after season 2.

    • @yiledute
      @yiledute Před 4 měsíci +7

      The same with Sydney, it was pretty much her fault to begin with.
      The only thing Carmen did wrong was not being able to handle the situation after they fucked everything up.

    • @LeapYearJay
      @LeapYearJay Před 4 měsíci +5

      Everyone shared blame. I think it’s not right to blame any one person. It was what they call a “perfect storm”. Carmy agreed to the take out orders, but Sydney made a mistake and left on pre-orders. It was a mistake, nothing more. Marcus should have been working on his cakes but it didn’t warrant being yelled at like that. They should have apologized also, but no one is perfect here in their reactions.

    • @yiledute
      @yiledute Před 4 měsíci

      @@LeapYearJay I normally agree that everyone has something to learn, but you can't seriously tell me that Carmen's mistake was trusting Sydney. Sydney's "just a mistake" was the main reason all of this happened, she is too impatient, unwise and inexperienced for her ideas always talking about planning but never going further, after planning comes making sure that the plan is feasible and making sure that everyone involved is focused and ready.
      Marcus didn't deserve to get yelled like that? Carmen and Sydney several times told him to stop doing what he was doing, that it wasn't the time to be doing that, and he kept going and going.

    • @LeapYearJay
      @LeapYearJay Před 4 měsíci +5

    • @yiledute
      @yiledute Před 4 měsíci

      @@LeapYearJay you seem to be downplaying how bad is what she did, she is a person and everyone makes mistakes, but in a business an employee can't be making this kind of mistakes.

    I always wondered what the point was of leaving the money for Mikey, since now he just got back the money he owed Cicero. My theory, and probably what the show is trying to convey, is that Mikey was hoping the debt would be forgiven when he died, instead of Cicero passing it on to Carmen
