  • Resident Evil, known in Japan as Biohazard, is a Japanese horror video game series and media franchise created by Capcom. It consists of survival horror, third-person shooter, and first-person shooter games. The franchise has expanded into a live-action film series, animated films, television series, comic books, novels, audio dramas, and other media and merchandise.
The first Resident Evil was created by Shinji Mikami and Tokuro Fujiwara and released for the PlayStation in 1996. It is credited for defining the survival horror genre and returning zombies to popular culture. With Resident Evil 4 (2005), the franchise shifted to more dynamic shooting action; it influenced the evolution of the survival horror and third-person genres, popularizing the "over-the-shoulder" third-person view. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (2017) moved the series to a first-person perspective.

The Dead Space monsters were a lot more terrifying than RE's B.O.W.s, the Necro-morphs we're so much more violent and vicious than any zombie, Crimson Head, Cerberus, Hunter or Chimera ever was, look I still love the Resident Evil B.O.W.s as monsters, I just think that the Dead Space Necro- Morphs are way more vicious and scary, this is a good thing to think about comparing monsters from other games, you did a nice thing here RapidCrafter well done ✊

What scares me is that Resident Evil proposes monsters made by a private company without faith or law. It's plausible and everything is explained biologically (Biohazard). Whereas Dead Space is based on a big string that is hard to believe (a space monolith. "lol").
For this reason, I find Resident Evil much scarier.

The Silent Hill nostalgia is always with me, but Since Dead Space came out, it was my most favorite horror shooters of all time and it became as memorable as Silent Hill.
It was executed so well that Resident Evil had to reinvent itself as a genre because of Dead Space.
Even the RE creators acknowledge this and what Dead Space did for the horror genre.
The fact that we get a Dead Space Remake now indicates that EA wants to compete against Resident Evil..

I think something to keep in mind is RE and Dead Space come from slightly more different trains of thought and tone.
Resident Evil took influence from and has a tone more in line with campy B Horror Movies from the 80s and 90s whereas Dead Space has more of a serious tone to an extent. RE's enemies are mostly more familiar looking with zombies, giant insects and reptile monsters where as Dead Space's ones are more Alien Body Horror akin to The Thing or a David Cronenberg movie mixed with a lifecycle akin to the Xenomorphs from the Alien movies.
Love both but I think it's important to note both of these franchises came from different routes and backgrounds. The best comparison I can give is RE is more Romero's Dead films meets Re-Animator where as Dead Space is more Event Horizon meets The Thing.

Having said that though I prefer Resident evil overall, I have alot more nostalgia with it, the remakes are awesome and 7 and Village are good too, honestly the only games I truly don't like are 4 and 5 because of how they've aged

The thing that kills the horror for me in Dead Space, is the futuristic spaceship theme of the game. It just seems way too far from reality. Resident Evil (2002) has environments and items that are consistent with the real life modern world. Also, the games are so far apart from each other stylistically that I'd almost consider them 2 completely different genres, the same way I'd separate RE1 and RE4-6. I actually think comparing RE4 to Dead Space 1 is a much more fair comparison since they're so close in gameplay. I really do love Dead Space, though. I just don't know what it is about space themed horror. I feel the same way about the movie Alien (1979). It's one of my favorite movies but it's just not as scary as something like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre or even Evil Dead. I know it's all fiction at the end of the day anyway. I wish I could explain it better.

In my opnion its the unknown and tension and pure helplessness is what made resident evil a eairy game to play. Ive never went into re expeting to get terrafying monster, thats why i think re failed after 4. but in all i dont think games ( accept silent hill) could really do re what re did at that time, and i think its unfair to compare dead space to the first re game when dead space came when the survival horror scene changed. no hate just sharing my opinion, and yeah dead space is way more terrifying then 5 & 6 but not the original games. cool video though 👍

  • @anvy1231

I disagree. If you played Resident Evil for the very first time on a PlayStation then it was pretty terrifying to play simply because the games where harder. You had to figure out the keys or items you needed to get from place to place and the angles of the camera added terror plus the tank controls as well. I remember the first time playing Resident evil 3 nemesis and boy was that scary on a PlayStation. When the PlayStation 2 came out, we also had Silent Hill. That was a very eerie experience especially 3. From the mall level to the church and hotels. Finding your dads dead body being sliced up and the creature reveal was pretty intense. The first time seeing the nurses man I can go on about that game. Dead space was scary, but the environments and music where tier level for resident evil and silent hill.

As an Re fan I must admit that dead space is superior by being scary. In Re3 you know when the monster are coming and where they are, at some point you know how the game works, but dead space? Its much more different. The monsters are unpredictable, you don't know where they are and whats going to happen. It can be 6 to 10 minutes of you walking around and see nothing and then all of the sudden BAM! An necromorph appears and it scares you cuz it caught you by surprise. The goal of dead space is to built your confident so that YOU Can get comfortable so it can shattered it. Its not fear of the necromorph You're scared of, its the fear of not knowing.

If survival horror games mean not having enough resources to defend yourself from enemies than resident evil wins because you can one gun deadspace but you can’t one gun resident evil. You need 3 weapons and you’re scarce on all resources. Still love both franchises tho

It's really hard to say so I really enjoyed you review. Dead Space has atmosphere down compared to RE, the lighting and sounds. I respectfully disagree. If we are comparing re1 and ds1, I feel re1 is the better survival horror game. In DS you constantly get upgrades and towards mid and late game you get really OP. Meanwhile in re1 you never get to upgrade anything and the resources are fewer for the entire game, which makes you really take care of your ammo, health, which weapons to use against certain enemies, which zombies to burn, which paths to take ( given the enemies that you left alive and your ammo), etc. DS is way more action based (towards the end I had way too much ammo and even some weapons I never used). For me it's a no-branier, but I guess nostalgia plays an important part in the opinion of everyone.

I forced myself through it hating every step of the way. Dead Space 3 is a masterpiece in comparison.

For me personally, I'm good at shooter games. So when I play either game I'm not as scared since I see these creatures/zombies as something I can easily defeat. Why should I be scared when I can defend myself. Though of course yes, both games have their moments that just get you inevitably. (Jumpscares.) On the other hand you have games like Outlast, which scare the crap out of me. There's nothing worse than not being able to defend yourself, I think that makes for the best horror element imo. Everyone is different though, but there's just a different dynamic to being chased by something scary as compared to fighting scary things.

Loved the video but I hate when people call dead space a survival horror it’s not survival horror it’s DNA is more akin to RE4 which is action horror. Sure your surviving and there’s horror but you never get put into situations where you gotta severely conserve resources or save ammo you get tons of health and checkpoints so deaths aren’t punishing even on the harder difficulties. There’s never been a situation in game other than the opening where I had to just run scared because I wasted my last shot fighting for my life. The enemies aren’t really a threat since you have kenisis and many weapons at your disposal. I love dead space all the same but it isn’t survival horror 😅

Uh oh..... You goin get the resi community in a uproar if they are sensitive that is lol . I agree with you tho . Obviously dead space was inspired from resi for sure and became a great competitor for horror games and relatable to resi ok many ways . I do feel actually that dead space was the best of both resi and silent hill . Survival horror for resi with fighting the necromorphs and psychological horror with Issac and the mental state of him as the games progress . Shame what ea did to that series and to visceral over all. I know the studio and those guys is making a spiritual successor to it . And that ea saw Capcom with the remake era so now they wanna make a remake for dead space . Hopefully those people do it justice but I do worry cuz it's ea . Great video bro
