    Wow I had to stop the video and just say that we sound like the same person. I don't have Facebook or any social media other than CZcams. You couldn't be more spot on than this video, I sit back absorb all of this on a daily basis. I watch young people and how they behave and a lot of them (in the US) are so self absorbed/consumed with social media that they can't look away from their phones long enough to have a conversation. I crave close connections, but that can be difficult when you can't get anyone to talk about the things that matter. The internet has brought about a lot of fear/anxiety, but it has also brought people together who otherwise wouldn't have met. I get in moods where I don't want to leave my house for weeks, because of all this. I don't know why but I needed to hear this from another person

      I still have Facebook, but I haven't been on there for like 2.5 years. Only two times I think because I got invited to a birthday gathering thing. But I actually have to take time off being at my computer to not go on the internet. Otherwise the temptation to binge is just too great. The longest I have managed so far is one week. And I got a lot of reading done in that time. I should take a holiday-week again soon.

    I'm an INFJ as well. We're a rare personality type so it's quite nice to hear from someone who is also an INFJ. I feel like I'm hearing my thoughts in all you're saying (at least for your posts on disconnecting from the net because I just came across your videos today).
    I've deactivated my accounts for some months now but earlier today, I permanently deleted all of them. I found your channel because I wanted to see how people fared after leaving Facebook and Instagram. Looks like you're still doing okay. :)
    The birds chirping in the back is one of the most beautiful sounds I've heard. I realize how much the sound has become a rare thing to me. I'm up late on my phone when I could be reading a great book, and I start my morning late when I used to love being up at twilight just to sit and watch/feel the world waking up.
    Anyway, thank you for sharing your posts to encourage people to get out and REALLY live. It has been encouraging for me as well. :)
    Also, no pressure on posting. Just post when you feel like it. You don't owe it to us to post regularly. :)

    I think the best way of using the internet is to take the information that you need from it and apply it to your real life. Or to use it in any way that supports your real life, like running a business. Or to keep in contact with people who are long distances away. And it's also great for finding like minded people like you, who a lot of people including myself would not otherwise have come across EVER pre-internet. I know the 'looking at pictures move across the screen' sounds ridiculous, but we are watching YOU talk and move on a screen right now! And we're finding someone who thinks similarly and we're learning about your perspective on things - so it's not totally useless. I've learned a ton of invaluable things from content on CZcams that I would probably not have found out before, or would have taken me years to learn. One small example is from the channel "What I've Learned". Yes, spending huge amounts of time watching pictures move on a screen just for the sake of entertainment is an enormous waste of life and isn't very impressive. But practically applying what you may learn from the content in your real life is a totally different story. It's the same as saying knowledge without practical application is useless.

    The balance is always what i'm searching for, but is so hard to put a finger on when you've reached it. With food, with exercise, with self-critisism, with sooo many things! And the use of internet is definitely one of them. I think using the internet for obligatory things (such as email, things for the government etc) and creating positive, insightfull content for others to see is actually the best way you can do it. I will try to take a example out of it.

    I like what the Dalai Lama said about this subject, he said that it really wasn't the media that was the point, but the intention and purpose of the people using it. The sad thing is that most people prefer porn to personal growth, and the internet has become a reflection of that.

Most of my internet usage is related to working on my dreams (now that I have much more free time that I used to use on social media). I had a similar experience where suddenly I was forced to go out and do things. It made me realize that many of the things I was looking for were already happening I just needed to look up. It's actually quite interesting you brought up the topic of human connection. I recently tried acid for the first time and, as an INFJ, I would say it was a beautiful yet tiring experience. During my trip, my mind kept ruminating over loads of different issues, one of which was human connection, so i do really resonate with a lot of things you have to say. With advancements in technology, you will always get those who aim to use it for the greater good and those who exploit it for their own, perhaps more destructive reasons. It is a shame but I believe if we do our bit and try to influence others (like you are doing with your youtube channel), it'll make an impact, regardless of the magnitude. Like Tesco's slogan - every little helps! I'm glad to have stumbled across this video, thanks! (Hopes for more videos now that spring is here).

    On a more serious note -- "social media addiction”:
    Since the time of the ancient hunter-gatherers humans have sought approval of the tribe, to be with the “in” crowd (powerful intense fear of exclusion). Perhaps this is how the internet hooks us, how our brains are wired to connect, and how many become social media “addicts.” There is a known pleasurable anticipation in the brain when social media informs you of yet another new tweet, email, Instagram or whatever!
    There is also what's referred to as “upgrade anxiety,” yes, the classic type when a new version of Windows or whatever comes out, but what I refer to is the more common experience of all day long anxiety to keep up with the latest news flash, terrorist attack, market plunge, album drop or whatever.
    The pressure is on!

    I think, as with many things, the problem doesn't lie in the technology itself - it becomes what we make of it, or use it for. That said, Internet is perhaps the single most powerful tool ever invented in human history and it can truly be used, and consumed, in very positive AND negative fashion.
    So, to me, the key thing with this development is not where the technology itself is going, but how we humans are going to adapt to it and how our relationship with it will be.

    • @tomdavison2784
      @tomdavison2784  Před 7 lety +1

    Hey Tom, you are 100% absolutely right in some regards, and I love your interactions between yourself and people of 250 years ago in your little act, that was funny but probably about right LOL
    The one thing that comes to mind however is evolution, Evolution is a never ending transition of the human condition. Perhaps evolution is a longer process than we sometimes think and while our technology that we use seems to have come on strong and rapid, our use and understanding of it however has not been as fast to better ourselves as a collective, in fact all of human development all throughout history has been a relatively slow process in the grand scheme of all things.
    Think slavery for instance, human slavery lasted about 300 years or so, depending on what history we read but 300 years was a long time to transition from one reality to another and to the point where slavery no longer exist, at least not to the degree that once did, but eventually, humanity was finally able to take that plunge and basically eradicate human slavery, it just happened to take 300 years to do it, now some may think, WOW, 300 years of slavery is really bad, but in truth, 300 years is a blink in the grand scheme.
    Perhaps our transition before, the middle and end or our technology is the same way, as you said, it was not until 1995 that this internet tech came in to play, according to the official story /record it was not until 1999 when the internet became what it is today, so that’s only 20 years for humanity to transition into this relatively new realm in human evolution.
    Now, the question that might be more important to consider is how long will it take humanity to fully adjust to all this internet of things and then finally calm down from all the initial excitement form this new tech in our lives, will it take us 300 years to better settle in and use it in a better way than we do currently, this I don’t know, but if were kind of take a snap shot and closer look at the bigger picture of humanities progress since the very beginning of time, things seem to happen at a faster and faster rate, so my thinking is, it will take about 30-40 years for us to be better equipped to use this tech more effectively and wisely and the excitement of it all kind of fads away and somewhat normal and our use of it less, [perhaps the chaos of it all will eventually subside, that’s my theory anyway.
    I do not know the answers, we will have to wait and see, but I’m fairly confident that everything will work out just the way it is meant to work out. I am an optimist at heart I guess you could say. Although my lens could be cloudy as hell and I am aware of this very real possibility.

    Like everything there needs to be balance. Technology is an amazing tool in many ways, boycotting it is needlessly extreme, as is over indulging. I find social media is a great way to stay connected to friends and useful in business. If I spend too much time on it however I start to feel like other people's lives are more interesting than my own. That's a sign to me I'm investing too much into it and need to get some balance back.

    • @tomdavison2784
      @tomdavison2784  Před 7 lety

      Yeah balance, as always, is the answer but we also have to admit that in it's current guise the internet is extremely addictive, more so than television or previous technologies. Yet everything is moving so fast to becoming 'online' or 'smart' that we've barely had time to reflect on it's effects. It's being pushed continually by the big tech giants and corporations without us really having much of a say in the direction it's headed. My issue isn't so much with technology, I don't want to go back to the stone age, It's more the fact that the human being is starting to play second fiddle to technology and in many ways technology is becoming superior to us. We need to re-discover that special element of our humanity that no machine can ever reproduce, otherwise we may well soon be redundant tech ourselves.

    • @Iam-od2nc
      @Iam-od2nc Před 7 lety

      The truth is... there is no "special element of our humanity that no machine can ever reproduce". That's what scares us. We are exactly as unique, and exactly as ordinary, as everything else that exists. We are manifestations of infinite energy. The "special element" is infinity itself; it is universal. It has nothing to do with humanity in particular.

    • @tomdavison2784
      @tomdavison2784  Před 7 lety +2

      The may be true from the purely materialist standpoint, one that I view as being limited to one side of a much larger multifaceted 'truth'. Human conscious cannot be proven to be a product of the brain because matter in and of it's self contains none of the constitutes of mind. Whilst artificial intelligence may be catching up, it's built upon 'binary code'. Some scientists do theorize that because the brain has neurons that fire 'on and off' that the Human mind is also binary but any deeper investigation proves it's not that simple. Human consciousness is also not limited to it's material hardware (brain + body) and can change the physical structure of these through imagination or 'placebo', it's non-locational. Whilst the most advanced artificial intelligence can give the impression of 'creative control' because of complex algorithms, the original 'data' still has to be input from a 'third party source' and it's also very much restricted by it's physical hardware which it can't change it's self. I'd say that the special element is 'immaterial' and this is the true 'third party source' of human consciousness. Something that has been known for thousands of years by humans who had a much greater insight into the workings of human consciousness than most people do today, and they achieved this through pure personal 'scientific' investigation. Materialist science doesn't like this because it can't explain the 'subjective' it can only quantity objective third person data, anything outside of that is declared not to have sufficient 'proof' to warrant further investigation, it's become incredibly one sided and self restrictive in being able to explain anything outside of this understanding. It's funny how so many of the people that go around throwing this view as the 'truth' don't realize that most of the top physicists alive don't even acknowledge the materialist view as having legitimacy anymore, yet somehow it's influence has held on in the public sphere, probably thanks to self-publicists like Dawkins.
      I mean it's only taken 2,500 years for mindfulness meditation to be 'proven' as being beneficial by modern science, as if such a thing has only now been authenticated. Meditation goes way, way, way, deeper than just making you aware of your breath and reducing anxiety but your probably not going to see articles on the Bardo Thodol, Samadhi or Mahāsamādhi in the New Scientist anytime soon.
      It's catching up no doubt, albeit very slowly, and we do need a new understanding of spirituality that acknowledges and compliments the developments of the modern scientific rational mind. That would be the goal of true science, not the kind of 'materialist superstition' that still permeates today. So to answer your question, until machines are bequeathed the same 'soul-consciousness' as humans I do not believe they will be liable to simply 'reproduce' it, and if they do? Then we're f**ked.

    Yo CZcams is my issue. I'm an INFJ that doesn't care about social media except when it's updates to my Instagram when big scrapbook events happen (which isn't often). i Have other accounts but I don't use them... cept this one... oh my gosh. And see here's the tricky dilemma, I use it to learn stuff but at the same time there's entertainment, sometimes together and inseparable. I've become neurotic about watching a bunch of videos on cool deep ideas for my INFJ mind to entertain. At this point I'm tapping on new videos as quick as my over thinking mind is moving😯. I guess the flipside inner ENFP part of me wants to check out all the new possibilities to absorb into my ever expanding bigger picture jar lolol. It's also a lot like porn because you're cheating yourself subconsciously, because we're primitively wired to be around actual people but we keep seeking connection with the faces we regularly watch on our glass planes lol. There was a TED talk video that suggested that real life deep connections with other human beings is the best combat against any addiction whether it be porn, drugs, or even CZcams, usually because these things are isolating habits. But at the same time, "moderation" is such an ideal concept to most of us. And there are no societal systems set in place as of yet to support us.
    Part of the overarching problem is that as an INFJ constantly swayed by my thoughts and my emotions, I almost can't discipline myself in anything because my mind and emotions keep shifting. That's why I'm trying to get into meditation, and back to writing my rap in my free time (which I barely get being an arch major...), because I feel like if I can better control my inner health, my habits will more easily follow suit. But the whole thing's so theoretical and idealistic for me at this point... which gets me stuck in thinking circles and not doing any of it, because I'm always overwhelmed irresistibly considering it all. I just wish I could turn off my intuition sometimes and stop being big picture all the time, take small bites and be happy😝

    At the point that virtual environments become as immersive as "real life"... what is "real life"? We are in an in-between stage at the moment, a sort of purgatory. But within several decades, the "simpler times" would be accessible through full-immersion virtual reality. You could be a hunter-gatherer in 16000 BC.. or a philosopher in ancient Greece.. or a monk in ancient India. Your "real life" would be a virtual environment. Which would beg the question... what is the distinction between "real" and "virtual"?
    Reality and illusion are the same thing

      Well now were entering "The Matrix' territory, I guess the distinction would depend on if you believe Humans are best served living in an organic world rather than a synthetic virtual world. Is a connection to something very important lost in the latter? Some would argue, like the monk in ancient India, that we already live in an illusion called Maya. Constructed from light and energy and limited to 5 sense perception, a virtual reality would create another illusion atop of that, almost like the double dream worlds in the film 'Inception'. The problem would be a spiritual one.
      Many quantum physicists don't like using the word 'reality' as it's essentially baseless.

      Right, exactly. The word 'nonduality', which is related to Buddhism although not itself a religion, points to the incomprehensible reality that all appearances are simultaneously real and unreal... a paradox. We are an indivisible, timeless conscious energy (or nothingness) playing with itself and pretending to divide itself in infinite different ways... such that all separations are illusory since it is really all the same energy. So the implication is that, the natural world is _inherently_ virtual, since the formless energy that we are could appear as anything at all, and it is only appearing in this form temporarily.
      So it's suggested that the only reason we feel like something is lost or incomplete, is that our brain develops a sense of self that distinguishes itself from the "external environment", making us feel separate... when in reality, there is no such thing as an external environment. It is all the same energy playing with itself.
      In regards to the overall message of your video, I totally agree with you that the internet in its current form is in many cases making us less happy than before. Just, ultimately I think it will enable virtual environments and telepathic communication that are unimaginably awesome. We think of our technology as being "unnatural" but in reality, it is just as much a part of the natural world as the mountains and the trees.

      Oh I think I mistook your understanding, well maybe from another comment. Have you ever read 'Autobiography of a Yogi" and some of the mad things those dudes could achieve, such as de-materilizing their own bodies, they didn't even have dial-up. I'm sorry but I'm not too excited about living in more virtual realities, I'm pretty much done with this one.

    • @Iam-od2nc
      @Iam-od2nc Před 7 lety +2

      Haha yeah I feel you. The VR thing for me is about escaping this reality, but I've been thinking recently how death would achieve the same result without having to wait for some future technology. No I haven't read that, will have to check it out. I know about the Vietnamese monk who sat perfectly still as he was being engulfed in flames.. crazy. Yeah in response to that other thread, I agree completely about the inherent issue with empirical science, I was having the same argument with someone recently. When I said there's no special element in humans, I meant that _everything_ is consciousness. There is no way for science to ever prove this because it is what everything is; it's like a fish furiously swimming in attempt to locate water. So although current computers may not have the same subtlety of experience as us, in my view, they are still expressions of consciousness. I'm interested in quantum computers, currently in development, which involve non-binary states where there is a superposition of multiple states simultaneously. And yes I agree, once we replicate human-level intelligence in a computer, we are indeed f***ed.

    • @tomdavison2784
      @tomdavison2784  Před 7 lety +1

      I'm reading a very esoteric book at the moment that states that computers do indeed have consciousness but it's not the good kind, it's Ahrimanic, and its aim is too slowly consume and dominate human consciousness by fusing it's self to us, in a way we are set to become its 'host'. Smart phones are just the start! Yeah I know sounds like pure science fiction but in many ways it's believable. it'll probably become pretty common for people to become 'augmented' during our lifetimes. Maybe why its a good idea to leave the reincarnation cycle sooner rather than later because it may become a lot harder in the future, if you believe in that sort of thing? otherwise I'll see you in the Matrix!

    The internet is amazing in certain ways and absolutely detrimental in others. What google, CZcams, Facebook etc have become is literally a man-made microcosmos of the law of attraction where everything you think, want and like is being force fed to you 24/7 to reassure you that what you already think you know is correct and absolute. If you despite of this manage to keep a critical and open mind and instead of looking for ways to reassure yourself that what you think is correct, are willing to see the opposite perspectives, opinions and “evidence”, existence might seem a bit more complicated, but you will be ok and you’ll be able to find the expansion of perception that you need to accurately realise wth is going on. If not, you’ll find yourself in an echo chamber, because proving a point in a convincing way is easy regardless what the truth actually is.
    Being addicted to the point of not being able to cope without whatever your poison is, is obviously not healthy, and right now the internet (or staying connected, ie disconnected) is the number one addiction for all human beings worldwide. For most people I think it’s a horrible thing and that it keeps people disconnected to the human senses, the world, personal interactions, real experiences etc. What it does is constantly distracting us to keep us from asking questions or look within, by always giving us this sense of satisfaction that is tailor made for us individually.
    I do however really see the potential of it and I think the internet is a massive part of the shift that is going on in the world right now and that it will play a key role to eventually changing it. Never before have we had this opportunity to connect with each other on a global level and find likeminded individuals that in a vacuum act like loners or weirdos, but as a community could learn from each other, understand their potential and purpose and consequently make a massive difference. I’m hopeful

    I basically sit on the internet all my free time. Sometimes just updating CZcams and Reddit, just searching for something to spend my time on. Does watching shows and playing games also count as unproductive?

    • @tomdavison2784
      @tomdavison2784  Před 7 lety +3

      Well that's down to you to answer, we don't always need to be 'productive' all of the time. Does it stop you from doing other things you'd rather be doing? Are you happy? Ask yourself those types of questions. When I was younger I spent a ridiculous amount of time playing computer games, then one day I no longer enjoyed it so I simply stopped. I make these videos to share my experiences and points of view, that's all, everyone is still free to have their own and most of the time we can only learn through our own experiences.

    I've been thinking about this a lot lately too. The problem I found is getting off of social media can further isolate you in today's society. How do you deal with that?

    • @adrianfeeger
      @adrianfeeger Před 7 lety +2

      give it time, think of it like a drug addiction.. you will have withdrawals but soon enough they will dissipate. Unless your geographically isolated getting off social media will likely decrease your isolation. I think it also depends on your level of introversion. If you can stomach being around people then join a group activity, make plans, get a calendar and schedule in social activity.

    • @tomdavison2784
      @tomdavison2784  Před 7 lety +9

      Well in many ways social media has created a 'self isolating society' which is why we now have this strange phenomena of the online world being more 'real' than reality to many people. If you suddenly disconnect from that, then yes it does feel isolating, and you do feel like your 'missing out' but that's when you might realize that you don't have much else going on in your life, apart from the daily routine.
      How many times do you meet friends face to face in a week? how many social hobbies/activities are you engaged in? Whens the last time you traveled to a new place to experience it just for yourself? I think if a lot of people asked themselves these questions they might realize they're not really living much of a life. Social media and the internet immediately gives you the gratification of being involved in something big and exciting but it requires no effort on your part, where as creating a fulfilling life does. Of course social media helps in maybe keeping up to date with group events and meet ups but at least that is providing an actual physical end result, it's the illusory world connected to that which is the problem. Whenever I'm unsure of how much time I'm spending on it all and how important it really is, I think like this;
      'When I'm old and frail lying on my death bed and looking back on my life, will I really say to myself "Gee I really wish I had spent more time sat alone on the internet." Also, think back on the best memories of your life, do any of them involve just sitting in front of a screen on your own? Do you even remember what you looked at last week? Ponder those questions and I'm sure you'll find your own answers.

      By the way I'm not trying to present that I've got this all figured myself, it's something I struggle with too so maybe we can all share what works for us. I have a few ideas to try and make these videos a bit more interactive in the future so it involves actually doing things, for you guys too, could be fun.
