I've read that in the original prototype design, the mirror lights were going to be legitimate spotlights that actually illuminated terrain for off-road. They got scrapped and changed to what they ended up as in production. That was one of a few designs that got scrapped in final production, another cool one was the shifter was supposed to be able to disconnect and be used as a handle for a shovel, hence the weird design.

Excellent review of the things to look for on an FJC! Big thanks for verifying what problems the owner needs to keep in mind. On my '08 with 170,000 miles (owned since new) I haven't had issues with most of the problems mentioned but I have had to replace the throttle body at about 70,000 miles and replaced both front wheel bearings at about 90,000 miles. As for the windshield, I'm on about my 4th one and it has several minor chips. Always used premium and glad I have based on your comments. It's not my primary vehicle and used mostly on summer road trips out west from the southeast pulling a small offroad camper. Before each long distance road trip I take it in to the dealer for an oil change, tire rotation if needed, and a good visual inspection by the shop techs. I'll have all fluids changed or topped off as advisable. So far, the FJ has never let me down. Again, great review! I think I'll go pop the hood and crawl under it to check things out (again!).

Love these videos; thank you for putting in the time and effort on them AMD! I have followed your videos to do several DIYs (oil changes, brake pads, transmission drain & fill).
For a video idea, I am wondering if can do a video on Alignments for Toyota & Lexus sedans? I know Alignments are usually not a DIY, but it would be cool to know "behind the scenes" of an alignment and cool details like why some Toyotas cannot adjust certain things (i.e. rear camber is not adjustable, toe is out of range, etc.)

Thank you, AMD. I have a set of factory takeoff Gen3 Tacoma alloy wheels to replace the stock steel wheels on a 2009 Access Cab, then it will be time to start back on Dad's annual Toyota dealer checkup. Regarding the erect FJ windshield, the old International Scout II (1971-1980) windshield was completely flat. (IH did not coat the interior side of body panels to prevent corrosion until 1979, so I visited quite a number of people in Alaska, who admired the 25 year old 1971 that I was driving, and remarked, "We loved the one we had, and it rusted away..." Thank you again for prompting me to look at VLEDS bulbs, located at the opposite end of Washington state from me.

Without a doubt, the single most enjoyable and informative video review and information I have ever watched. No shouting, no drama, no antics at all, just solid, informative, and easy to hear and listen to information. Thank you for such a professional presentation. I owned a Magma colored 2013 FJ Cruiser brand new from the dealer and kept it for 2 years. I stupidly sold it for another family SUV which I never loved like my FJ. Fast forward to last week, and I found a totally Creampuff 2013 in Calvary Blue. I snagged it immediately and I am again deliriously happy with my FJ. I am close to 60 and I intend to drive this vehicle for the rest of my life. I love it that much!

For underbody stuff, its all about caring for your truck. Wash it and spray with Inox Mx3. Do that after your major off road trips. I do that twice a year, before the start of summer and at the end. No rust issues. The underbody is still a surface that needs care. Every wheeler in Australia does the same thing to protect their trucks. Its a very US issue to have snow and salt on the roads, then have owners that never wash their trucks and bitch about rust.

I own a 2007 FJ 6MT and a 2017 4Runner. Looking at the clean engine bay and relatively low miles for 14 year old truck ; this Owner really takes care of his truck, washes the underside and avoids salt exposure, i.e. its not his only car.
The Trail Teams (special edition) sticker (yellowish) is on the tailgate, not sure of glove compartment. The other distinguishing feature on Trail Teams editions is body colored roof, instead of white.
The TRD Off Road is an aftermarket sticker.
Those silver wheels are not FJ Cruiser, they are 4Runner wheels which were (maybe still) available aftermarket. They also came in black in that style, called "TRD wheels".
The 2007~2009 FJ's is a easier time changing oil, filter is on top side. Has a little higher peak torque than the newer 1GRFE but in general, the truck is easier to live with. No TPMS etc.
Other problems on the FJ's: the "hat type" parking brake can freeze up if left on overnight. Better to leave it in gear in really cold weather when parked (or wheels against a curb).
A/C relays sometimes fail, its nothing to replace yourself.
Drivers seat fabric can tear at the outside vertical bolster, a seat cover is recommended.
Fan belt pulleys, front wheel bearings, clutch throw-out bearings in MT are a common issue, though they are a really low percentage of trucks that have it.
Inner engine compartment fender bulges/cracks from jumping the truck, and real axle ring gear failures (very early 2007 models only) are some more very infrequent problems.

I have a 2007 and have not encountered any of them. I always wondered why the plug change interval was so low. Thanks for that. I will be keeping an eye and ear out for the wheel bearings as I am at 137K miles. I have heard about the alternator going around 140 - 150K so I hope to be ready for that. I am considering doing a change before it fails, we shall see. I did have all the pulleys and belt changed around 130K when the one started screaming. Thanks again for this very informative video!

  • @EthosAtheos
    @EthosAtheos Před 2 lety +2

Good video but you missed the number 1 problem with the 07-09 FJs. The drive shaft slip yoke/ slip joint. If it is over lubed you will blow out the seals and it will stick. If it is under lubed it will stick. When coming to a stop you will feel a sudden kick like you've been rear ended. Don't worry you haven't been. But you do have a slip yoke that is sticking. To test if it is the slip yoke, shift into neutral before stopping and see if you feel the kick. If you don't then it needs lube or replacement. The fix is to upgrade the prop shaft to the newer style. The 2010+ vehicles seem not to have this problem.

First thing that came to mind when I saw that FJ is the cracked windshield. Of all the FJ's that I have seen roll thru the service bays (which was very few), most of them had busted windshields. Most people just live with it until it gets too bad for visibility. Why bother if it's just going to get cracked again in a year. If I remember right, they are about $700 to replace. As far as the TRD wheels go, I think the FJ did have a TRD package, though it was very uncommon.

As long as you've mentioned the windshield, the other common issue associated with the replacement of the glass is the plastic clips that hold the top piece above the windshield and the two corner cowl pieces as well. A lot of people will lose these pieces on the highway after having the glass replaced. Reason being is because some techs are lazy and simply rip off these pieces instead of using panel tools. Then they don't replace the clips after they break them. The clips are such an inexpensive piece, that it makes no sense to ignore their replacement, because the panel pieces are NOT CHEAP in comparison.

I have a 2008 Fj with a manual transmission. Mine of the problem mentioned here have had 2, the noisy idlers and wheel bearings. Not to bad for a 13 year old truck that I take off-road more often than most.
I never thought the lights on the mirror where that much of a hassle.. I change mines using a very thin screwdriver and the glass just pops off very easy.
But now I feel kinda guilty because my Fj has not seen a drop of premium fuel since I bought it 4 years ago and I put 70k miles on it ever since, currently at 132k on the odometer. The previous owner didn’t put premium either..

New pulleys, waterpump, radiador hoses, thermostat, alternator, gas tank straps, tune-up, breaks, tires and led lights. Also grease all the fittings. Especialy on the driveshaft. Another indication of the bearing issues is the poor tire wear. That Cooper Discoverers version tires were bad for cupping if the bearings, &/or alignment issues. Very minor issues show up. A problem with that version of Discoverers.
